Dominican Adventures.......2007-01-09
I had only a brief five day visit to the DR in the Fall of 2006 for a wedding. Even though I was traveling with a local-speaking partner who had been to the DR many times, I still bought the Lonely Planet book and used it to help build an itinerary. I only had a chance to visit the Southeast corner of the country, as well as the city of Santo Domingo. The Lonely Planet guide helped me find clean and affordable accomodations for less than $50USD/night right on the beach where we rented a local fishing boat for two days to go diving and snorkeling in the local reefs. I'm looking forward to going back to explore other parts of the country. Rental cars were inexpensive, but driving in the DR is an experience as it almost seemed like a "free-for-all" at times. The main Interstate is well maintained, but a majority of the local roads are not. The Lonely Planet guide ~as always~ was accurate and helpful.
Nothing About Haiti.......2006-12-22
There is nothing in this book regarding Haiti. Amazon lists the title of this book as "Lonely Planet Dominican Republic (Lonely Planet Dominican Republic & Haiti)" and this isn't correct. Now I have to pay to ship it back to them. Thanks Amazon!
Best information for trip to the Dominican Republic.......2006-07-14
After a short visit to the D. R., I ordered this book in anticipation of my next trip there. I was surprised and pleased with the detailed information.
Complete, informative and useful.......2006-03-27
All that you would expect from a Lonely Planet Guide. Well worth buying for making a trip to the Dominican Republic. It will enable you to chose a resort to suite your taste, and to visit places that interest you.
Great insight for the off-the-beaten-path traveler.......2005-12-21
Go beyond the all-inclusive resorts to see the 'real' Santo Domingo and let the experts handle the logistics so you can experience the warmth of the Haitian people. Great resource, great research, well-done and easy to navigate.

Is Lonely Planet Slipping.......2006-03-28
I have been a great fan of the Lonely Planet guides for years and have used them in Central America and Australia and places that I have just dreamed of going. But this one seems to be written by people who were just afraid to travel or only spent a week here. I have lived in the DR for two years now and once lived in Haiti. Sorry ' LP' I think perhaps your reporters are getting a bit soft. Where is my beloved guide to the world of toilet-seats-optional hotels. This one even rates some of the VERY pricey all inclusive resorts that are just Cancun. My former LP guides would not even include these monsters. Yup -the Rough Guide is better.
too much history, not enough helpful info.......2005-07-11
I am about to leave to study abroad in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. I bought this book, as well as the Rough Guide to the DR. I think the Rough Guide is far superior to the Lonely Planet guide.
First of all, since this is a guide book for the DR as well as Haiti, only half of the book is devoted to info about the DR. And a lot of that information is about the DR's history. If you are really interested in learning about the extensive history of every historical monument in Santo Domingo, then maybe this book is for you. But if you want to know about good restaurants, bars or hostels, Lonely Planet will give you an extremely short list, with vague reviews.
If you are planning on spending a lot of time in Santo Domingo, I would definitely recommend the Rough Guide. The Rough Guide and Lonely Planet pretty much have the same info about other parts of the country, but it seems like the author of Rough Guide actually spent the night at the places, hung out with locals, etc., while the Lonely Planet author seems like he went around and grabbed a bunch of brochures and only stepped inside most of the places.
The only bonus about this book is that is does provide really helpful info about Haiti, and tells about lots of cool places to visit in Port-Au-Prince. It talks about how to interact with Haitians as a tourist (because you will be unable to blend in). If you plan on traveling to Haiti, you should get this book.
We'll see which book really proves more helpful when I arrive, but so far, I have mainly been relying on Rough Guide as my main source of research and information.
Excellent Choice for a Travel Guide.......2004-11-11
This is a great travel guide. I had taken this book with me to DR on a road trip with my friends (who lives in DR). This guide had detailed maps and descriptions on hotels and which places to visit. overall a great book. always trust lonely planet.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic resource for inspiration.......2007-07-23
I'm an English teacher in China, doing both classroom and private small-group teaching. Language learning definitely requires more than the "chalk and talk" approach that Mr. Marsland warns against, and his book is a great resource for avoiding such a bland style of teaching. Language learning should be engaging, and this book offers good inspiration for making it so.
I have to cope with very unsatisfactory teaching materials oriented towards memorization and drills -- not good for achieving fluency. Also, I'm frequently asked to teach last-minute classes with little or no time to prepare. Resources are frequently limited to little more than a chalkboard, if that. It's easy to become frantic and stuck in a pattern of "Oh God, how do I fill this 90 minutes of class time? What do I do?!"
Many thanks to Mr. Marsland for giving this concise, well-organized and thoughtful book. It's like a splash of cold water in my face when I make my own job more complicated than it has to be. /Lessons From Nothing/ is a nice reminder that you can easily turn "nothing" into "something" if you make it engaging and interactive.
Not satisfied.......2007-04-10
I don't think that this book is what it claims to be. Too difficult to read and the lessons weren't really that great. I threw it out.
Must Have No Matter Where You Are.......2002-02-11
This is a small compact book that has tons of activities that
you can use with absolutely no resources. In many LDN nations
there will be no resources at all. At times, not even a chalk
board. This book can however, be used anywhere, because it
focuses on Communicative methodology and student-centered activities which allows for better development of L2 acquisition. No matter where you are teaching in the world, if your teaching TEFL/TESOL it should be on your shelf.

Book Description
In his introduction, Stelios Lydakis notes, "It would be impossible for an art historian to study the works of antiquity without extensive reference to their influence on the art of the centuries that followed." Lydakis provides a complete history of ancient Greek painting from the earliest
examples in Crete, Thera, and Mycenae to those of the classical and Roman epochs. Through a multitude of examples, he shows how these ancient works shaped modern ones. The literary references he considers include the works of Lucian, Philostratos, Pausanias, and Pliny the Elder. The works of art
reproduced include wall paintings from the Palace of Knossos, Thera, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Oplontis; vases from the Mycenaean through the Classical periods; reliefs from the Parthenon; and mosaics from Pompeii and Delos. The book also features paintings made in later centuries by such artists as
Mantegna, Titian, Durer, Raphael, Rembrandt, and Rubens that were inspired by antique models.
Book Description
Nearly everyone who cares about them believes that dogs and cats have a sense of self that renders them unique. Traditional science and philosophy declare such notions about our pets to be irrational and anthropomorphic. Animals, they say, have only the crudest form of thought and no sense of self at all. Leslie Irvine's If You Tame Me challenges these entrenched views by demonstrating that our experience of animals and their behavior tells a different story.
Dogs and cats have been significant elements in human history and valued members of our households for centuries. Why do we regard these companions as having distinct personalities and as being irreplaceable? Irvine looks closely at how people form "connections" with dogs and cats available in adoption shelters and reflects on her own relationships with animals. If You Tame Me makes a persuasive case for the existence of a sense of self in companion animals and calls upon us to reconsider our rights and obligations regarding the non-human creatures in our lives.
Customer Reviews:
The human animal connection.......2005-08-30
This book is very thought provoking and efficiently reviews several perspectives regarding the connection between humans and animals. It is very well written and succintly conceptualizes the human-animal bond.
Wonderfully inspiring read .......2005-08-09
Leslie Irvine's voice provides those in animal science, animal welfare and just plan animal lovers with a new insight into the psychological relationship of the human-animal bond. A compelling theoretical read with real-life examples. A must have in any animal welfare/animal social policy or human-animal bond literature.
Kate Nicoll, MSW Soul Friends, Inc.
Thought provoking and thoroughly enjoyable.......2005-02-20
Sociologist Dr Leslie Irvine's If You Tame Me is a very important and inspiring book. It will be of great interest to all who love animals and are concerned about their welfare. If you sense a kinship with nonhuman animals and the natural world, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It is very well-written and well researched. It takes many of the assumptions that we commonly make about the animal "other" and skilfully dismantles them to reveal pernicious social constructs that should stimulate us all to be more cognizant of how we treat other species. I couldn't put it down!
Book Description
In this book Stearn gives the meaning and origin of some 6000 botanical names, selecting those most likely to be encountered by gardeners and horticulturists. No other single source provides so much etymological information for the gardener, the result of years of scholarship and original research by the distinguished author. Also listed are 3000 of the most widely accepted vernacular names, cross-indexed to their correct scientific names, an invaluable reference for gardeners, writers, and historians. Plant classification and binomial nomenclature are explained, and there are notes on the structure and pronunciation of botanical Latin. No other single source provides so much etymological information for the gardener.

Mature plant name dictionary.......2000-07-30
This is the work of the author of "Botanical Latin", the indispensable reference for those delving deeply into plant taxonomy. He is thus quite qualified to do what he did here: extensively revise "A Gardener's Handbook of Plant Names" by A.W.Smith (1963, still available as a Dover reprint of 1997). Facts were checked, errors eliminated, additions made. The typography was modernised. The help in pronunciation limited to stressing syllables.
This book presents a wealth of information on plant names: it lists 6000 botanical names and 3000 vernacular names, in addition to quite a bit of background information. It is limited to plant names of importance to gardeners, but this is not so limiting as might be, since by this is meant "gardeners worldwide", including those on the Southern Hemisphere. Although I wish it were slightly longer, this book surely gives value for money.
Book Description
"This book is brilliant, incisive, honest and deserves to be read with attention. It is an important event in the Marxist theoretical production." -Politique Hebdo
"A remarkable essay, whose merit is not only theoretical, but also historical, because it examines unknown aspects of the evolution of young Marx's thinking."-Politis
In the 1840s, the young German journalist Karl Marx developed ideas about modern society that remain as relevant today as when they were first developed. Here Lowy shows the lasting force of Marx's early writings on alienation and emancipation.
Michael Lowy is research director in sociology at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris. He is the author of many books, including Romanticism Against the Tide of Modernity.
