Book Description
May Lenzer has spent her entire life befriending animals of all shapes and sizes. This book tells the story of the many wild friends she has rescued and adopted as her own. At turns both humorous and poignant, this is a book that will be loved by anyone who ever left their house to seek adventure in the great outdoors.
Customer Reviews:
Review of May Lenzer's book, WALTZ ON THE WILD SIDE.......2003-05-13
If you thought opossums are just road kill on Florida roadways, you will never view wildlife quite the same after reading May Lenzer's WALTZ ON THE WILDSIDE. She captures the personalities of woodland critters with amazing insight and allows the reader to see them through her eyes.
You will meet Popeye, the desert tortoise who recognizes his name and comes when called. He only eats gourmet turtle food and lets the family cat ride around the kitchen on his back. There are Jekyll, the thief, and Orville, the firebug, two abandoned ravens unable to fly, who live in the Lenzer household until they are ready to be released.
She spots a coyote and his mate, with their two pups, along the roadside during a severe snowstorm. The female is black and white and appears to be mostly sheepdog. The fate of the coyote and his mixed breed wife and children are a testament to romance even in the animal kingdom
This is a handbook on wildlife, but mystery, intrigue, romance and murder are all included in captivating detail. The night screams of a creature that stalks her; an unexplained, horrendous wound on the back of one of her donkeys; a healthy squirrel found dead in its cage, are just a few of the stories Lenzer shares with us. Her account of murder on Howard's Creek scratches the conscience of even those who are ambivalent about animals.
Bonds are strong between the animal foundlings and their surrogate mother. WALTZ ON THE WILD SIDE brings a lump to the throat when it is time to release the animals into their natural habitat. May Lenzer gives her charges her blessing and watches as they return to their kingdom to live as nature intended. From ants, beetles and bats to squirrels, opossoms and whales, she runs the gamut of American wildlife from California to the Florida Keys. The world is made a better place through her caring and love for nature's children.
This book, charmingly illustrated by artist, Maggie Guinn, is a classic. It should be included on all bookshelves and read by generations to come.
Waltz On The Wild Side by May Lenzer.......2002-11-21
In one word, this book is delightful! If you are an animal lover, Waltz On The Wild Side will make you laugh, make you cry, and teach you something along the way. It is a work of art wriiten so descriptively that you are transported into every story. I could visualize in my mind the pictures the written word had painted on every page.
Delightful in these days of strife.......2002-07-13
I found this book to be a wonderful read for adults and the plus is it is outstanding to sit down with your children and enjoy it together. This book certainly opens your eyes to the world around you that is never seen. The "stop and smell the coffee" certainly applies. I have personally learned more about life from these 135 pages than in my 61 years on this beautiful planet. Hopefully May Lenzer has done something for us all to maintain the integrity and beauty of the hidden world beneath our very feet.
This Little Book is a Sleeping Giant.......2002-06-17
I bought this at the local mall from the author. What caught my eye is the cover. I feed all sorts of wild things year round in my backyard and oppossums come, sometimes mothers with clinging babies, and they are my favorites.
These stories are so warm and full of compassion but not overdone. Just real, like the woman who wrote them. If you've ever stopped to admire a field of flowers, a butterfly, or just love wildlife and wild places, you have to buy this.
I'm surprised to see just two reviews. Here's mine. It's great and so are the pictures.
If you want your kids to do some good summer reading, this is the one.
Nostalgia for the summers of our childhood.......2002-03-22
If any of you have a special child or grandchild who enjoys reading or being read to about the life of animals, this little book is a joy and a delight. The author paints vivid pictures of beatles and mice, ravens and whales, toads and parrots, snakes and tortoises in locales from New York to California, Florida to Oregon. I must disclose that she is my cousin, May Lattanzio Lenzer...and a gifted writer. The book will be treasured by children who are held on laps and who are holding children on laps...the young and the young at heart...those who remember nature walks with their own parents and those special moments of discovery. May brings alive those patches of paradise that have not yet been paved over into parking lots .

Customer Reviews:
Not the best book, and there is an updated version available.......2006-07-17
Amazon is not so great about removing older versions of books and this is one example - if you are going to buy it, get the 2006 version. Now, about the 1999 version....I will agree that it is helpful for driving through the park, but it's only good if you are traveling in the direction she has written it in. For example, if you are traveling a particular leg from north to south but she has written the guide traveling south to north, it is really difficult to follow. The book Yellowstone Treasures by Janet Chapple is written with mile markers regardless of which direction you are traveling in, so I recommend it over this one. Chapple's book is also more comprehensive.
Scenic Driving: Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.......2006-02-28
I love the detailed descriptions she writes mile by mile which will be very helpful to have in the car as I drive through the parks myself. It has also prepared me for what to look for.
As a "map lover" I like the detailed maps of different sections of the park even more. But . . . I have two complaints: 1) Her maps do not include everything she describes. To me, that is the purpose of a zoomed in map of one section of the park! 2) In her written description she talks way too much about the fire of 1988! But overall I have found the book helpful in my preparation for a visit to both parks and plan to carry it with me.
Great reference and take along guide.......2005-10-06
I purchased many books as a reference for our first trip to Yellowstone, this is the one book I decided to take with us and we used it everyday, the information given was interesting and easy to follow. We felt like we had our own personal guide. Would recommend this book to anyone.
This is a great book!.......2005-08-10
My kids and I just got back from Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and this book made our trip even better than it would have been without it. The funny thing is that I almost didn't buy this book. I refused to be one of those people who experience Yellowstone from my car, so a book called "Scenic Driving" didn't appeal to me at first. But Yellowstone is so huge that even if you plan to hike every day you still need to drive between trailheads, and as a result, you spend a lot of time in the car. My 13-year-old son narrated the entire drive and we ended up seeing things and doing things that we wouldn't have otherwise done. This book helped us understand what we were seeing and led us down roads I would have passed up if it weren't for this book telling us what was around that corner. (By the way, "A Ranger's Guide to Yellowstone Day Hikes" was a great book too!) I can't recommend this book enough. It's a must!
Scenic Driving Yellowstone and Grand Teton national park.......2004-01-09
We used our copy of this book to plan our main drives around both parks. Except for a very few instances the scenes were exactly as described and exactly where they were supposed to be. The wildlife viewing recommendations for the most part were spot on. We recommend this a an invaluable resource for those planning to drive most of the roads and entrances to both parks. We lent our well beaten copy to other couples since our return and both couples raved about how useful this book was to their planning and daily events.
Customer Reviews:
Used this every day of our trip.......2007-07-26
We used this book every day we were in Yellowstone. It was such a help in planning each day, knowing where to stop, what to expect in terms of how long hikes were, finding restaurants and shops, etc. I would read the information about each place aloud to the kids, which helped pass the time between stops. One word of caution, though. We are not the type of family that does a lot of hiking, camping, climbing, etc. We did find that some of her descriptions of the difficulty of the hikes and trails were a bit underestimated. Between the heat and the altitude, this is important to keep in mind! Other than that, I think this is a must have!
Excellent!.......2007-07-07
This book was right on the money with all the things to see while driving through the parks. In combination with this book Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks (Outdoor Family Guides) and the Trails Illustrated maps of both parks:
Trails Illustrated Yellowstone Map Old Faithful
Trails Illustrated Mammoth Hotsprings Yellowstone National Park NW
Trails Illustrated Tower Canyon Yellowstone National Park NE
Trails Illustrated Yellowstone Lake Yellowstone National Park SE
National Geographic Trails Illustrated Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA: Topo Map (Trails Illustrated - Topo Maps USA)
(which can also be purchased at http://www.ngmapstore.com), we had a very easy time getting around the park and where things were located. It made planning a whiz!
Intimate & Excellent.......2007-05-29
This second edition adds two new drives, and updated information from the 1999 edition.
Most surprising, for a guidebook, is the intimacy of tone, and enthusiasm for the parks and the beauty of the surrounding areas.
This book contains substantial, and well researched information on the historical, geological and natural features of the parks, and the tone is that of a close and intimate friend, sitting in your passenger seat, pointing out the window and exclaiming, "Hey! Look at that!"
Far from the staid and removed tone of many guidebooks, this book is truly an "Insiders' Guide," and makes me want to check out the other books in the series.
OK for Main Roads.......2007-05-25
This book is OK for the main roads in Yellowstone and the Tetons. I had hoped for more of the "off the main track" roads. You can get most of the info here from free brochures and park literature. But it is well written and fairly complete. If you just want to travel the Grand Loop with all the other tourists, it will guide you. If you want to find a little wilderness, you need to find another guide to driving the back roads (or just get the hiking books and save the gas!)
Best for those who plan to see the parks by vehicle.......2007-01-13
For those interested in viewing the parks and surrounding areas by vehicle, this book is a good resource. The book lists 28 different driving tours in and around Yellowstone and Grand Teton National parks. Each tour provides a general description along with driving time, attractions, and points of interest.
Does a nice job of breaking down the drives between points of interest inside the parks.
Thorough coverage of the Yellowstone/Grand Teton area....but, unless if you're someone who plans to do a lot of driving tours, I'm not sure that you couldn't find the same information on the Internet.

A friend raved about this, and she was right!!.......2002-06-22
A friend of mine who raises and shows dogs raved about this book, so I picked it up. It has been very helpful, even though my puppy will not be a show dog, it has helped with my understanding her better.
Outstanding value.......2000-09-12
If you are serious about competition obedience this book should be a required read. It was a great help for me when I started to show my first dog. It points out all the little things that can make the difference between a qualifying and a non-qualifying score. If this book was 5 times more expensive it would still be worth every dime.
A most informative and up-to-date book........1998-02-28
The author does not miss a trick with this book. If you are at all interested in AKC Obedience, whether you already compete or are even considering it, this is THE book to read. Rather than give lengthy training methods for the basics of obedience (any book can do that), Handler specifically covers what and what not to expect from an AKC obedience trial or sanctioned match, and gives wonderful advice on "proofing" your dog for each required excersise. This book is nothing short of a necessity for the AKC obedience competitor.
Good basic book for those new to obedience work.......1997-07-03
I like this book because I am just starting to
get interested in showing my dogs in obedience.
The author covers almost every imaginable topic
including what to wear and what to expect at a
show. I also like that she assumes that the reader is working with a trainer as it encourages the reader to find a good one. The illustrations are very helpful as well.

Very Poorly Written and Edited.......2005-11-01
I agree with the other reviewers: if you want accurate information, buy another book. This book was VERY poorly edited. It has some nice photos, but some of the captions are even inaccurate.
A Connoisser's Guide to Antique Dolls.......2002-11-10
I absolutely agree with the first review. Ihe information in the book was poorly researched and the author was patronizing, at best. What bothered me the most was the lack of care regarding source checking, which could have easily been done considering all the accessible information around these days. My copy of this book is in the garage waiting to be "sold" at the next garage sale. Good riddance!
This book is just not helpful at all..........2001-11-13
As an antique doll afficianado & collector, I need accurate information. Seems like this book was just thrown together to tap into the doll collectors' market, without any sense of real knowledge about antique dolls. Some info on the dolls is inaccurate or wrong. Typos. Scant and superfluous text. I do not get the sense that this author has a love for dolls nor a true knowledge to share with doll afficianados.
I say, save your money.
Doll book review.......2001-08-15
This book does not live up to its title. It is a very superficial review of the subject. It contains an extensive amount of typographical errors; so many typos that it distracts you from the text. I would not recommend this book.
Book Description
The reader will find much in this third book in a trilogy of information on growing giant pumpkins. How-to-Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins, III presents the newest information on cultural methods, who's who, and records. New ideas about plant size and pruning strategies throw a whole new light on the grower with only a small area to devote to giant pumpkins. New discoveries involving the use of considerably more calcium in feeding programs, a steadily growing consensus on the use of nitrogen, the beginnings of a real effort at applying genetic theory in pollination strategies, how-to select the best seed, and the controversial subject of genetic manipulation, all required an airing-out here.
The explosion in the number of growers gathering information via the internet, either through website information, or through open forums with other growers via message boards, has become a major accelerator in the learning curve of all growers. Seed auctions, message boards, and a site devoted entirely to maintaining a database of pumpkin genetic backgrounds, all contribute to a shortening of the time it takes to succeed in this sport. I would be remiss if I did not spend the time to write about these valuable resources, and convey any new discoveries to you.
If you want to grow a world record giant pumpkin, you will find much in this book to to help you.
If your goal is 1500 pounds, then you've come to the right place.

A Must Have.......2004-03-26
Part III of the "trilogy" is a beautifully done book that you will read again and again. It introduces you to some of the top growers in the world and gives the latest growing techniques. I would suggest getting part II as well.
What A GREAT BOOK!!.......2004-03-26
This is a great follow up to the other two books. It goes into great detail about genetics inparticular. It also covers just about everything else very nicely. As a pumpkin grower myself this book helped me grow a 370.6 pound pumpkin my first year! You could grow one too with the expert advice of this book!
