Poor Structure, Editing, but Good Info.......2006-12-11
If one has an interest in learning Sicilian, this book is a good toolbox of info. However, like any real toolbox, the tools are so cluttered and spread out that one needs to know what you're looking for and how to use it before he even opens it. There is no index in this book, and the table of contents merely has lesson titles (like "At the Airport") and doesn't tell one where to find grammatical info. One should not only KNOW another language before using this book, but one should know how to LEARN another language (parts of speech, &c.) before diving in. If you know what you're looking for, it's altogether good.
I don't know of any other Sicilian grammars, and thinking that this could be the best available in English frightens me. If I were a Sicilian, I'd be embarassed.

I can't say definitely because I am just a student, but this book wont get you far, it is full of Italianism (which may be current in Sicily, but so is Standard Italian) or maybe I began with an archaic dialect and that makes such impression.
As a Sicilian, I Had High Hopes for This Book, But..........2002-02-19
If you know nothing of Sicilian language, this book may help you pick up a little vocabulary. But as a Sicilian, and as a professional editor for 5 years, I have to say that I wouldn't look to this book for any definitive answer to anything.
There are typos everywhere you look, not to mention layout and formatting issues. Was an editor or proofreader -- or ANYONE -- ever employed to read this before it went to press? I'd be mortified as the author to see a book of mine published with such a disregard for content and style -- particularly since it's an educational book, and a language book to boot.
You may get some benefit from this book, simply because I have never seen another book on Sicilian out there, but that's where my recommendation stops.
Okay introduction to Sicilian.......2001-07-16
Dr. Privitera does a decent job of introducing basic Sicilian in this book. Each chapter begins with a conversation in Sicilian, followed by the English translation, and then it moves on to the vocabulary used in the chapter. After the vocabulary comes a brief grammar lesson. The conversations are not very creative, and I can't imagine Sicilians actually having conversations like some of the ones used. Like another reviewer said, the chapters are a bit repetitive, but I think that's intended in order to enforce memorization. The only problem I had with book is that there wasn't enough grammar provided. I wish he went into more detail about verbs, and that he had provided some grammar about prepositional contractions. I managed to come to the conclusion on my own that a circumflex signified a contraction, but this was never actually explained. Another problem is that people who don't have a knowledge of Italian might get lost quickly. All in all, however, I've learned quite a bit of Sicilian, and thanks to this book I can now communicate with my Sicilian friends in their own dialect, instead of standard Italian.

Only semi-useful to me........2005-08-11
This book is a typical Dover survey -- page after page of only lightly documented images, line-drawings of items, but no actually pictures of the items cited. As a historical costumer specializing in Keivan Rus' (SCA), I found this book only moderately useful, such as a jumping-off point or idea-prompter. I'm sure this book would be more useful for folk artists and crafters.

This is another boonie dog book review from Wolfie and Kansas. "Just Mutts: A Tribute to the Rogues of Dogdom" by Steve Smith and Gene Hill remedies a serious gap in the genre of coffee table dog books. As Mark Derr noted in "Dog's Best Friend", we mutts and boonie dogs are far superior to cognitively impaired, hip-displaced show dogs. At last some noncanine animals of primate derivation have produced a coffee table book featuring us rather than some AKC-recognized breed.
There are many highlights in "Just Mutts". We liked the picture on the left side of page 48, which looks like Kansas, and the narrative description of a trip to the vet, which reminded us of Wolfie's last trip to the chamber or horrors and needles. Our only complaint is that, despite the subtitle, "Just Mutts" seems to feature trainable pets, rather than true rogues and boonie dogs.

A must have for Intermountain gardeners.......2007-03-18
I bought this book back in the mid-1990's after attending a lecture by Lauren Springer. Of all the books in my extensive garden book collection- I would list this as one of the top 3. As a Landscape Architect, I frequently review the suggested plantings and incorporate many of the plants she suggests into my xeriscape designs for clients. When her book first came out, it was difficult to find seeds (let alone plants) that are profiled in the book. Fortunately, most of the plants are available now but some may require ordering from places like High Country Gardens.
As others have said, she has an interesting writing style that will have you reading and enjoying the text- not just looking at the pretty pictures!

A great book for plant lovers in the high plains, or the high desert. This book contains inspiring photographs and great plant lists (the most valuable part of the book, as these lists are nowhere to be found elsewhere), as well as wise advise from a well experienced gardener. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading nearly every page of this book. On the downside, the plants in the book may be difficult to find, unless you join a rock garden club and grow the plants from seed. I wish the plant portrait section was three times as big. But overall, this book is indispensible.
The Undaunted PLAINS Garden.......2001-12-01
I agree with others, lovely prose, lovely photos, good organization. However, if you are looking for a true mountain (high altitude) gardening book, this won't do it. The author is of course speaking of her own experiences but I purchased this book believing it would help me to be a "Colorado Gardener." Not one word on dealing with elk and deer attacks on your plants or that short and really unpredictable growing season above 7500 feet in the Rocky Mountains. This book did make me miss my old mid-Atlantic garden badly!
Great prose, great advice.......2001-06-26
Lauren Springer is a gifted writer as well as a gifted gardener. She has a knack for passing on her knowledge in a very interesting way, making the book more than just a plant encyclopedia.
In part, this book is a novel about her own garden, but she goes far from her own chunk of dirt to show and describe plants which work in a variety of climates. If there's any one gem I pulled from this book it is to plant the correct plant for the specific micro-climate rather than trying to adapt the micro-climate for the plant you've chosen. This is much easier to do, more rewarding, and requires less maintenance.
This book is a good read now, and a good reference for later on.

Surprisingly applicable to modern Americans.......2007-05-14
I started reading He Leadeth Me because I thought it might have some interesting thoughts on God and suffering, as a general concept. I had no idea, however, how very applicable Fr. Ciszek's hard-learned insights would be to my day-to-day life as the average American stay-at-home mom.
The wisdom he learned after five years in solitary confinement and 20+ years at a Siberian slave labor camp is not just how to grow closer to God in the face of great upheaval and suffering, but how to know and live God's will in the face of the frustrating, the humdrum, and the mundane.
I can't recommend this book highly enough to everyone -- whether you're experiencing great suffering or just frustrated by the daily grind, you will undoubtedly find Fr. Ciszek's story life-changing.
Inspiring and Thoughtful.......2007-01-04
This book documents the experiences and internal struggles of a Jesuit priest through his experiences in the Gulag, and thereafter in Soviet society. It is engaging and thoughtful. A friend of mine recommended it as a source of inspiration and hope, and it delivers that and more.
Fr. Cizek relates his experience with honesty about his own weaknesses, doubts, and human frailty. He has a way of weaving into his story a sense of his own faith and belief in Providential tendencies to bring ultimate good. At the same time, he does not neglect human responsibility. For example, though seemingly helpless and subject to the will of his captors, Fr. Cizek explains: "What each man can change, first of all, is himself. And each will have -- indeed must have -- some influence on the people God brings into his life each day."
The discussion of his experiences as a priest in the gulag, as well as in the post-gulag experiences in Soviet cities, also brings out the depth of religious belief in the human experience. Despite the efforts of Communist party officials to indoctrinate in atheism, the people just were not buying it. In fact, in some cases the young people took to religion as a way of rebelling.
A good read, and one which you may want to read again from time to time to pick up new insights.
An excellent and inspiring book!.......2007-01-03
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I am so glad I took her advice. Fr. Ciszek's story is inspirational and incredible. His account of the hardships he encountered and how he relied on his faith to see him through is. . . amazing beyond words. As a Catholic, I was awed and comforted by this man's graceful acceptance of the will of God in his life, even to the extent of suffering. His story of finding goodness and meaning in an imprisoned existence is a wonderful testament to the strength of the human spirit, not to mention the strength of faith.
A spiritual journey in the Russian Gulag.......2006-09-05
This is the twelth review of this book on Amazon and everyone has deservedly given 5 stars.
It was written by a Jesuit Polish-American priest, the late Walter J. Ciszek, and I have been meaning to read it for quite a number of years. Father was imprisoned by the Soviet Union while carrying on a priestly mission ministry in Russia. They claimed he was a spy.
Fr. Ciszek spent 23 years (1940-1963) in the Russian Gulag. His own family assumed he was dead, until they got word from him in the late 1950's. Ciszek was over five years in solitary confinement in Lubianka prison (subjected to brutal questioning and treatment), about ten years in Siberian concentration camps, and eight years of limited confinement in a number of small Siberian cities.
This is the second of Father's books about his experience - the first was "With God in Russia" which I haven't read. In the preface to "He Leadeth Me" Ciszek says "this is the book I wanted to write" because it goes into his spirituality and spiritual development, during the 23 years. His interior life.
And it's really a wonderful book, as Father talks about his failures and successes, while he constantly seeks to "accept the will of God."
And despite the horrors of what Ciszek faced, it is a very hopeful book. He worked very hard at his priestly ministry while in captivity, which did not sit well with his captors. He is forever astounded by the faith he saw in so many people he came across in terrible circumstances. And this in an officially atheistic country.
Father has his funny moments - for example (P.138): "It is much easier to see the redemptive role of pain and suffering in God's plan if you are not actually undergoing pain and suffering."
Father Ciszek was traded for a Russian spy in 1963 and had a priestly ministry based at Fordham University, until his death in 1984.

The story line is very dramatic and each chapter had a profound impact on me. While reading each chapter I can relate to the problems with my spiritual life but he then shows the error in my thinking and my relationship to God is enhanced. Excellent work.

Scholarly and personable.......2004-03-27
CW Slemmings' books answer all those old testament questions that you have always wondered about ... he explains the feasts of Israel as they prefigure Christ in "Thus Shalt Thou Serve", the layout of the temple as it applies to salvation in "Made According to Pattern", and further expounds on our salvation in his book about the priestly garments entitled "These are the garments".
In this precious book he shows us how Jesus, our Good Shepherd, cares for us, just as the shepherds of ancient times lovingly tended their flocks. His writing style draws one in and is easy to understand, at the same time Mr Slemming makes very deep connections between the old and new testament that will astonish and comfort you. These books were my first introduction to the synchronicity between the Old and New Testaments, and I would recommend them to anyone interested in the Old Testament roots of Christianity.
Excellent InSight.......2000-01-25
The other review appears to be misposted. This book, written for Christians, provides readers with a highly informative perspective on shepherd life in Palestine. Since most don't understand what shepherds do, it's commentary helps bring "color" to Psalm 23, giving it more substance on a personal level in one's walk with Jesus Christ. An excellent book!
This book is badly written & is a disgrace to other novels........1998-07-15
I think this book is the worst I have ever read. It lacks creativity and good writing skills. This book is for people who much prefer to read books with horrifying plots.
