The beauty of the beasts.......2004-08-21

French photographer Bruant's black and white portraits of African animals invite the eye to linger. At first glance we marvel at textures and moods and the artistry of capturing a single instant's energy. But a longer perusal calls attention to the incomprehensible otherness of animals while zeroing in on the common nature of all animal life.

Bruant returned to Africa over a period of 20 years. "Little by little, I understood certain things: that the most interesting way to photograph a wild cat is to emphasize its gaze rather than its body; whereas, in the case of hippopotamuses and impalas, the reverse is true."

He captures animals in the acts of doing what they do - drinking at water holes, eating, capturing prey, threatening one another and proclaiming their power. Often he gets very close - photographing a crocodile so only a portion of its toothed snout and one eye are visible - or falls back to show the immensity of herd on plain.

The page is dedicated entirely to the photograph. Captions are in the back of the book, accompanied by small reprints of the photos referred to. The captions offer a general description of the animal and its habits and habitat and a specific description of the circumstances in which it was taken.

This is a beautiful book that both animal and photography lovers will turn to time and again.

Lonely Planet Ethiopia and Eritrea.......2007-01-13

I travelled hree weeks in Ethiopia from 27.12.2006-12.1.2007 time. I visited Addis Ababa, Wollea, Debre Zeit, Dire Dawa, Lake Langano, Awasa and Harar. I used this book as a base for my travel plan and it never failed me. I read the book allways forehand at night before we entered a next place. It saved my son for a trouble becaus of framed Addis Abeba hustler information. He went to one of those ethnic conert the book was warning about and everything hapened exactly as told in the guide book. I got him out of that concert immediately and he saved 1000 bir.

Hotel information was very accurate, except the prices had come up 10 %.

Now I am back in Finland and I am very thankful for the writers. The arranged me a safe trip to one of the worlds poorest and most dangerous countries.

most disappointing LP so far.......2006-11-23

travelled through Ethiopia with this guidebook and was very disappointed. The accomodation references are poor (better ask a cab driver), so are the historical descriptions. Also (but this is an LP thing) it's good for people who like to be told by the authors what you are supposed to see, if you like other things you have to ignore the author's comments at all costs.

Excellent on Eritrea as well as Ethiopia.......2005-11-26

"Smallchief" mentioned that he had used this book in only in Ethiopia; I can attest that the Eritrea section is excellent as well. The walking tours of Asmara are a particularly useful and enjoyable introduction to a beautiful and eminently walkable city. Some of the information is out of date - a number of the establishments mentioned in the book are now closed, presumably due to the Eritrean economy's difficult straights. Let's hope that Ethiopia and Eritrea can overcome their joint and singular difficulties.

A fascinating country.......2004-12-30

I have used the Lonely Planet Guide for two visits to Ethiopia. I haven't been to Eritrea so I can't comment on the guide for that country.

The Lonely Planet series, in general, is short on describing luxury accomodations, dining, and chichi places and long on local history, customs, and out of the way places. Described in the guide, for example, are the dubious pleasures of chewing "chat," the lovely Ethiopian coffee ceremony, and the possibilities for trekking in several Ethiopian national parks.

Ethiopia is one of most contradictory and complex countries in the world. It it one of the oldest Christian countries, claims to house the Ark of the Covenant (remember "Raiders of the Lost Ark") in a church in Aksum, boasts "Lucy" the bones of one of the oldest ancestors of human beings, and has some of Africa's most spectacular scenery, the Blue Nile falls for example. Ethiopians have a strong, confident ancient culture and perhaps the most distinctive cuisine in the world. Steak tartare fans will like kifto. Cold beer and hot pasta (reflecting the brief Italian colonization of Ethiopia) can be found most places for less adventurous eaters.

One tip from me that may not be in the guide. Ethiopians for some reason are reluctant to accept 1996 US $100 bills and any bill that is torn or worn.

Ethiopia is a country well worth visiting. This guidebook will tell you all you need to know.

From Africa's Horn.......2002-03-16

I live in Norway, and Africa's Horn is far from my everyday life. I have travelled several times to Eritrea though, and have been searching for guide books from the country. When I went to Eritrea last fall it was with great pleasure I bought the LP book by Frances Linzee Gordon, Ethiopia, Eritrea & Djibouti.

The book is one of the best LP books I've read. The writing is clearly, and it gives us good insight in history, facts, geography, and so on. I have read parts of the book about all three countries, but the Eritrean part is the only one I have actuallu used when travelling.

The books has some very good pictures and maps, and give alot of up to date information. My favorite part is the part about Asmara's architecture, "Asmara, or Piccola Roma, soon came to epitomise the new philosophy: it was not just beautiful, but was well planned, well built and, above all, functiomal. The book is a good guide to use when you plan your travel ahead, and is even better when you actually are there and need or want information.

An extra benefit of the book is the small notes you find alot of, giving interesting information. Reading these notes makes your travel alot more special.

When I travel I use my guidebooks as kind of diaries. I write down restaurants I visit, hotel I stay at, interesting places I see and so on. And this book is filled with my writings almost on all pages. Gordon has seen it all, and gives very useful information about a very interesting, though little known country.

As a Lonely Planet author, I'd like to echo the words of other reviewers of this book. This is clearly Lonely Planet's best title - the writing is clear, concise and informative, the asides are entertaining, the tone is objective yet engaging, and Frances Linzee Gordon's photos are nothing short of spectacular. Congratulations, Frances - you've produced a winner!

Great reference book!.......2001-08-05

A recent front page article in the New York Times on the Lalibela churches in northern Ethiopia sent me running for my LP copy of this book. I was most pleasantly surprised to find over a dozen pages of detailed information on this incredible center of early Christianity. F. Linzee-Gordon's first hand account of a visit to the churches provided a most informative background lacking in the NY Times article. Well done!

Frances Linzee Gordon's guide to Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti is not only clearly the best of the available guide books for these countries, but is also a real pleasure to read. I have used it twice this year while filming television documentaries in Ethiopia for National Geographic Television and it has made both trips easier, more interesting and more enjoyable than they would otherwise have been. The practical information is comprehensive and accessible and the historical and geographical information is elegantly written and more readable than is often the case in guide books. But what makes this guidebook stand out is the infectious passion and enthusiasm for the countries which it displays. The personal reflections and the incidental information (particularly in the boxed text) give the guidebook a texture which really helps to make the country come alive. I would higly reccomend it to anyone making a trip to Ethiopia.

LP's best "asides".......2001-05-06

What makes LP's guides something far more than a mere index of cheap places to eat and sleep is its "asides". Those little notes in the corner of almost every page give the traveler a look into the psyche of the subject country. Frances Linzee Gordon's well focused encyclopedic collection of asides in this book arm the traveller with a treasury of notes that help the traveller understand their Ethiopian/Eritrean/Djiboutan hosts and provide a veritable arsenal of discussion topics while on the road. So armed, the traveler will have no problems making friends with the locals. Well done FLG!

I have always admired and enjoyed Elizabeth Berg's fiction. Her novels are wonderful, so I looked forward to receiving this book on writing. I found it very enjoyable and useful. It is packed full of good information and is easy to read.

Excellent writing guide.......2005-05-11

Elizabeth Berg's voice is just as engaging when she writes nonfiction as it is when she writes novels. Which is perhaps to be expected, because she started out by writing essays and articles for women's magazines.

Throughout the guide, Berg dispenses many tips, such as: show a man is old by describing the dime-size age spots, rather than saying he's old; mood can be reflected in description; go to a restaurant and write down everything someone does for 10 minutes; crash someone's funeral, if there's a tasteful way to do it; and keep it simple when sending query letters to agents (i.e., no perfumed paper or candy boxes).

She also includes interesting tidbits such as a discussion on how to deal with success, and the envy one's friends might begin to harbor. Her friend Phyllis contributed 5 pages to the book concerning the jealousy she felt when Berg made it to the New York Times bestseller list. She also includes tips on how to handle rejection (in the scheme of things, it's not a big deal) and choose a writing class (be wary of teachers who don't write).

Perhaps most valuable are the thirty pages of writing exercises, intended to unleash your creativity. She goes for variety, breadth and depth by giving you sentences to complete, scenes to write, and gender-bending exercises (for example, if you're a woman, write about what it feels like to find out you impregnated someone).

Another great thing about the book is how encouraging she is. She devotes a whole chapter to debunking myths about writing, and insists that she started out without contacts or an agent.

Definitely worth your time if you're at all interested in writing.

Friendly Inspiration.......2005-01-27

Elizabeth Berg has a wonderful way of befriending readers. This book presented the refreshing message that writing need not be an excruciating experience. Sometimes, writing comes naturally. I am in the middle of writing a novel, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the writing process so far. I agree with Elizabeth--if writing is torture for you, try doing something else!
Among other things, the book discusses how to deal with rejection, and success. The author points out that success may divide people because it invokes the old green monster: jealousy. Elizabeth Berg included a fabulous piece of writing created by her best friend who described the jealousy she experienced when E.B. became a famous, published author.
Overall, I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The recipes in the back are a wonderful bonus. Try this one--you won't be disappointed!

A lovely book!.......2004-08-24

When I read this book, I think of meeting a friend who understands and encourages me - and we're having tea. Elizabeth Berg's charming voice comes through clear and strong as she encourages, gently nudges and inspires writers to celebrate their calling. I loved it! Whether you're just beginning, experienced, published or unpublished, this book is warm like a treasured quilt on a cold night. Buy it and enjoy.

Unconventional; A Good Thing.......2004-06-05

I enjoyed this conversational, encouraging, somewhat "splashed across the pages" writing book.

It is almost like Berg wrote the book as a Stream of Consciousness exercise with one chapter, for example, all writing exercises meant for elminating blocoking and another chapter filled with recipes and other chapters with excerpts from friends and peers.

This was vaguely annoying to me and at the same time, it was very worth reading for the tremendous gold nuggets such as this one:

"If you have the calling to be a writer, its not going to go away any more than the shape of your nose will. Your need and longing and the ability to express yourself will come back. Like love, you can't force it. Like love, it will find you when it's ready."

and

"When you write, you need to have a certain willingness inside you, an auto induced mood of simultaneous quiet and energetic readiness that lets your imagination know its ok to come out now."

Berg is primarily a fiction writer, so she writes a lot about topics which would be especially beneficial for writers of fiction.

All in all a respectable, decent read but not among my favorites.

This book is dull and has nothing not publicly available (with the exception of the photos of cute puppies circa mid 80's) elsewhere. Would not recommend. It says very little about understanding the breed. I have owned and trained four Mals for the police force.

Great book.......2007-09-18

Finally a comprehensive book on Belgian Malinois!!! This is one of the only books I've found that isn't about all of the Dutch Shepherds, only the Malinois. I learned a lot more about the breed, enabling to understand my Malinois' behavior and drives. A must have for any one thinking about this beautiful and complicated breed!

Excellent Guide!.......2006-03-22

This series of books is a great resource when you want to learn about specific breeds of dogs. Unlike most breed books that concentrate on only the good, this series explain the good and the bad, who should and who shouldn't get involved with the breed ect.. We also purchased the book on Finnish Spitz and it is just as informative as the Belgian Malinois book. I would definitely recommend this book, or any of the series, to someone who is interested in a specific breed!

This book is one of the most comprehensive works on the Belgian Shepherd breeds/varieties yet written. Every Belgian owner should have it on their bookshelf. As a Belgian Sheepdog fancier of 25+ years, and possessor of several breed-related books, I find the information found in this book invaluable and recommend it to all my puppy buyers.

The book was not very informative had mostly history of the Dog.
I thought the book was waaaaaay over priced for the content.

Good Book.......2005-07-31

It is not a long book, but there does not seem to be a lot of information on the subject of Malinois. Overall, it is good because the author trained this breed of dog for years. He knows a great deal about the dog. The book is slightly geared towards police dogs, but you can still learn a good amount of information from this book. If you want a dog like this, even for a house pet, than read this book. You need to get a good understanding of what this dog is all about.

I ordered this book to learn more about the Malinois and instead what i got was a quick description of the breed a hand full of photos and then thats it on them.. The photos were very basic. the information was ok but went on to discuss handlers, choosing dogs, and then KNVP.. all the informaiton is basic.. it only brushes over the information. The book did not even discuss traininng techniques in details... Very disapointing book..

NOT YOUR NORMAL DOG BOOK.......2000-01-11

The great thing about this book is its focus. Most dog breed books tend to look at conformation, rather than the working aspects of the breed. This book is all about the wonderful working attributes of the versitile Malinois. There is a detailed account of how to bring up a young dogs drive and make him tollerant of any situation. The author even discusses the KNPV exercises in the Dutch Police dog trial. I believe this book is perfect for anyone interested in owning/training a malinois for police work or sport.

Jan Kaldenbach's paperback book on the Belgian Malinois was anything but on the breed. The book is meant for someone interested in having an introduction to the sport of French Ring and would want to know how to go about training. However, even that information is limited. Kaldenbach has a touch and go feel to the book about the Malinois. Which means that very little information is given about the breed. The book hardly has any pictures of Malinois, and only one picture of a nice looking Malinois. Kaldenbach took an exciting, versitile dog and made the breed Ho-Hum. by lack of vital information. Not a good book for anyone wanting to learn about the breed itself or to check out what the breed is meant to look like. All through, Kaldenbach barely touches on his subject in order to cover a lot of information in a small space. However, by doing so the reader does not get to learn very much about the breed or its potential.

A man forced to remain immovable for life, prisoner to a wheelchair, tries to impose onto his world the same confinement that he feels. He does it with his Belgian sheepdogs, with his hawk tied to a hanger, with Australian parakeet that he keeps caged, with his nurse, his sister and his mother. Probably also with the reader, who will feel enclosed in a cage that gradually keeps getting smaller and smaller. These stories propose a series of facts as fiction, or perhaps they are real.

Description in Spanish: Un hombre obligado a permanecer toda su vida inmóvil —probablemente es parapléjico; en todo caso, está confinado a una silla de ruedas— trata de someter al mundo a la misma inmovilidad; de hecho, lo consigue con los perros Pastor Belga Malinois de los que es criador, con un halcón amarrado a su percha, con periquitos de Australia que mantiene enjaulados, con su cuidador-enfermero, con su hermana y con la madre de ambos. Probablemente también con el lector, quien sentirá que una jaula empieza a encerrarlo y se hace pequeña gradualmente. La secuencia de hechos inquieta y pone en tensión; también ofrece múltiples posibilidades de interpretación, entre ellas la de que los personajes representen, en sentido metafórico —e irónico—, realidades colectivas. Ello desde el subtítulo de la novela: "Tratado sobre el futuro de América Latina visto a través de un hombre inmóvil y sus treinta Pastor Belga Malinois": ¿qué o quién nos gobierna y hacia dónde nos lleva (si es que hacia algún lado vamos)? Esta novela postula como ficción una serie de hechos que no terminan de parecerlo; quizá sean reales. Acompaña a la novela un folleto de 32 páginas con fotografías a color que muestran lugar, personajes, atmósferas, perros héroes.
