The open ocean asked Steven how badly he wanted to live, and he answered by enduring over two months of loneliness, near starvation, constant thirst, and countless open sores from his unending saltwater bath. Through it all, he never knew if all his suffering would lead to redemption or death. This is indeed a story of courage and strength in the face of the natural adversity of thousands of square miles of open ocean. Compared to these 76 days, life for most of us is a cakewalk. Steven's story is compelling, memorable and inspiring.

sea-savvy sailor boredom.......2007-06-22

Amazing? Hardly! As hard as it was for Steven Callahan to survive 76 days asea in a rubber dingy, it doesn't make for a very interesting book. How much can happen in a setting of a dingy and an ocean of saltwater? Well, three things: fish, water and blisters. If you find any of those three things excitingly interesting, them jump on in to this book. If you're a sea-savvy sailor, unlike me, maybe you'll understand more of the seamen terminology, techology and boredom. How was this story worthy of 344 pages is beyond me. I'm not just uncompasionate, just uninterested. If you want to read a "lost at sea book" and don't care about fiction/non-fiction, then read Life of Pi.

this book was simply incredible- it is BY FAR the most exciting, interesting and amazing story i have ever read in my life- my favourite book i have ever read i may even say and i am a huge reader- (and i'm approaching 40)- i feel it changed my life if you can believe it- his descriptions of the events that took place and his feelings that went along with them were so well told that i really felt i was along in this survival adventure with him- you feel such compassion and hope when you read this book, it really touched my soul i must say- i am not a sailor and know little about sailing, so you don't need to appreciate sailing to love this book- i still felt like i was on the atlantic with him and this may sound crazy but this book was so rivetting that i sometimes feel i really have been on the atlantic adrift in a dinghy- sounds crazy i am sure but i think this is a testament to how well he relates it to us the reader- i can only imagine what it would be like to read this book if you are an avid sailor... this is a must read book for everyone in my opinion-

A revealing odyssey.......2007-05-14

This is the fascinating story of a resourceful sailor who drifted in a life raft across the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike other adventurers who have chronicled solo transoceanic journeys (Joshua Slocum, Thor Heyerdahl, Alain Bombard, William Willis, etc.), his journey was unplanned. After the sudden sinking of his sailboat, he had to hurriedly abandon ship into an inflatable life raft with whatever supplies he could snatch. His seventy-six day ordeal takes place in this constantly leaking raft too small to accommodate his full body length. He knows from the outset that his food and water supplies are inadequate. His story of survival thus becomes not one of simple endurance, but a confrontation of many external and internal challenges ranging from securing food and water to dealing with isolation and despair. He meets these with remarkable ingenuity and determination. Forced into introspection that borders on the mystical at times, his reflections on how his mindset and personal characteristics responded to these challenges make for as fascinating an inner journey as the one his body endured. This is what separates this from most adventure stories, and why I think it will endure as a classic of the genre.

The book is a thoroughly realistic and sensitive depiction of the days the author spent across the Atlantic Ocean fighting for survival. As the book is not the original log, but a book written way after the author was rescued, one might expect self-aggrandizement of sorts or at least some hubris to settle in. Surviving 76 days on an inflated life raft with only rudimentary equipment is no small feat after all. To the contrary however we find humble man, a man who claims that he had learnt how to live and how to appreciate it through the devastating experience. In his own words: "The real story of Adift is not so much about me as it is about the magic and mystery of the sea and how it delivered me two priceless gifts."

The book stands out among other adventure stories in the author's sensitivity and his attention to details. A school of dorados follows him throughout his journey. His observing the dorados daily allowed him to recognize the individuality in them; even under his predicament he feels sorry for having to hunt the dorados. As for Callahan's attention to detail one needs to read only a few pages on how he fixed any of his equipments during the journey. One discovers infinite patience, his affection towards the equipment, description on the minutest details of how he has done the job, and at times diagrams of the equipment. All the diagrams and sketches in the book were drawn by the author as well.

In my opinion the book thoroughly deserves to be included as one of the best survival tales ever written.

Compelling account of struggle and survival.......2005-03-03

This book is a fascinating account of survival, which led me to question my own fitness for such a trial. The book is well written as a narrative taken from Callahan's logs, with much detail that places the reader in the raft with him. Whether Callahan experienced an 'epiphany' as another reviewer mentioned couldn't be more beside the point; this is a story of survival, not a meditation on spirituality.

Amazing and frightening!.......2002-10-21

I enoyed this book immensely. Callahan gave very poetic descriptions of what was happening. I sympathized with him for having to survive on his only friends, the dorados. I was amazed at his will to live and ability to overcome, with his wit, the failed equipment in the raft. I appreciated his drawings so I could better understand the state of things. To be alone on the ocean in a small raft is frightening in itself, without mentioning all the problems Callahan encountered.

An Inspiring Tale of Survival.......2002-10-07

Steven Callahan's book, Adrift: Seventy-Six Days Lost at Sea is a remarkable retelling of his unimaginable ordeal on the Atlantic Ocean. Callahan retells his story in an exciting and gripping fashion. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main point one gets out of this book is the power of the human spirit. Callahan fought against every problem and disaster with fierce determination. His determination saved his life, and truly is an inspiration to anyone who reads this novel. The novel made me consider how lucky we are to have the luxuries we have at our disposal. It's hard to fathom losing every luxury on the ocean except for your basic needs, food and water. Callahan has to deal with the torment of dying physically and mentally for seventy-six days alone. The book never gets repetitive; Callahan always captures the imagination with his different trials on the sea. It is an excellent read.

Read and keep in your library.......2002-03-19

Callahan's fight for physical and mental survival is a great read. When faced with months of little food and water, most of us only think of ways to get nourishment. The reader soon realizes that being alone, seeing the same views day after day, and physical pain can be as damaging on the brain as lack of water. The reader also realizes just how much we take for granted in everyday life.

Solid advice on a variety of writing topics.......2003-11-27

That's just one of the pearls from Paula LaRocque's Championship Writing: 50 Ways to Improve Your Writing, and an indication of what you can expect to learn in her book.

Championship Writing comprises 50 chapters ~ or 50 ways ~ for improving writing. It covers everything from crafting compelling headlines and strong leads to constructing smooth sentences and incorporating quotes. As you can see, it's primarily aimed at journalists and non-fiction writers, but other scribes will gain a lot from this book as well. There are other topics of interest, including chapters on Web copy, general usage, and coaching writers.

LaRocque, a seasoned journalist and editor, is also a well-known and highly-regarded writing coach who has given hundreds of literary lectures, presented a TV special on the craft and also produced a regular column for the now-defunct Quill magazine.

The book is essentially an anthology of LaRocque's column, and she doesn't try to hide it. Each chapter is referred to as a column.

And that's probably my only real criticism of this book. It reads like a regular column rather than as a well-constructed book ~ there is no natural transition from one chapter to the next.

Championship Writing offers plenty of information and instruction on the art of writing well. Each chapter addresses a specific topic, discussing challenges, revealing solutions and illustrating with practical examples of useage. This is a worthwhile reference for new writers and those wishing to excel at their craft.

Show-off.......2003-04-13

A child has a talent. Even more lucky for this child, she/he finds an adult who is completely impressed with this talent. So, he/she performs for this adult. The adult claps. The child continues. The adult smiles and shows others. The child continues. "ENOUGH ALREADY!" That's what I want to say when I read this book. The chapters start off so well and the advice seems useful. But her examples go on and on and on to the point of being unncesssary. Chapter 7 could've been excluded altogether. Chapter 8 is a prime example of FAR TOO MANY (yeah, I said it) examples. I was not impressed with this book. Good idea, but too much performing for me.

For Journalists, For Sure..........2003-03-12

This book was a disappointment after reading all the glowing reviews.
First, this is an anthology of writing columns by author and the book has a cut-and-paste feel to it.
Second, this book is primarily for journalists.
Although this is a good book it definitely reads like a newspaper column and lacks the feel of a great book despite all the five-star ratings.

Clear, immediately useful guidance.......2002-12-12

"Championship Writing: 50 Ways to Improve Your Writing" is a short course on learning to find and resolve some of the most common obstacles to good writing. While there is overlap between some of the fifty items (such as the coverage of pronoun problems in Chapter 15 as well as Chapter 38) the book is well organized, easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to use.

Of particular value are the numerous examples of each problem and how to resolve specific instances. When applicable she includes very useful tricks of the trade. For example, whether to use "who" or "whom" is easily resolved by a simple substitution trick. One tough problem that many people wrestle with, one easy trick, and the result is a grammatically correct sentence.

The advice is very good, the writing style fun and not at all academic, and the results are tangible. A highly recommended read for anyone struggling with becoming a better writer and especially so for those with limited time.

Quick hints with big value.......2001-03-31

Paula LaRocque does something that so many authors fail to do when writing their guidebooks on the craft -- give clear, concise and useful information that applies to the beginner and professional alike. My shelves are stocked with texts that would, undoubtedly, help me improve my writing skills if I were willing to devote countless hours to deciphering their suggestions. But for one with limited time to write, much less read about writing, "Championship Writing" provides tools and tips that I can cover in 10 minutes or less. Pick up a copy to keep beside your computer for those moments when writer's block has you staring off into space. Once I've finished one of LaRocque's chapters I'm ready to dive back into my own prose.

The book, on the whole, does as its title asserts - uses good photographic images to show the reader the various shapes used by Wedgwood. It also offers some guidance as to the rarity of colors used and a basic historical reference.
Even with the wide variety of shapes shown, there were some missing. The identification of the designs was most informative.

great quick reference.......2004-04-05

This is a great book on wedgwood jasperware. It will definitely help identify genuine pieces and offers great illustrations. I thought there would be much larger collection of pieces illustrated within the book though, so I was somewhat disappointed since none of the jasperware I own was even listed in the book.

Author's opinion given as a reference work but pix are great.......2004-02-07

The title of this book suggests that it is a guide to all Wedgwood Jasper Ware, but the author concentrates strictly on dipped jasper ware. The title should indicate this. The text of the book also is filled with the author's opinions that dipped jasper ware is somehow superior to solid Wedgwood jasper ware and that the latter category of wares is rather declasse. He is certainly entitled to his opinions but they should not be presented as standard for Wedgwood collectors. His collection (and therefore his book)concentrates on a very specific period of production that he prefers but as I stated above the title does not indicate this. Having said that, am I sorry that I purchased this book (indeed pre-ordered it and waited several months for it?) Not at all. The photographs are sumptuous, and that section of the book is superb. The shapes of the pieces and subjects of the bas reliefs listed apply to all types of Wedgwood wares, dipped jasper, solid jasper, basalt, Queensware, drab ware, etc. For this very reason, the book is a valuable reference. Quality books on Wedgwood are few and far between and older ones are difficult to find if one wants to own them and not have to go to a library. In conclusion, drool over the pictures, but divide the text into two categories: Wedgwood history (which the book is short on) and author's opinion (of which there is plenty.)

An addendum of second thoughts:
The book convinced me to acquire my first piece of dipped jasperware. I can certainly see why the author raves about the quality of the workmanship during this period of production. The dipped jasper has qualities that more modern solid jasper does not offer but the solid jasper has wonderful qualities of its own. I will not go so far as to say that one is superior to the other, but that each needs to be appreciated for what it is. I am grateful to the author for expanding my (Wedgwood jasper) vision.

Finally a book on 19th and 20th century Wedgwood.......2004-02-05

While many books have been written about Josiah Wedgwood and 18th century "first period" production, there has been very little information for the collector of 19th century jasperware. Until now. Michael Herman has written a wonderful guide to explain and classify the wide range of dipped jasperware and bas relief ware produced by the Wedgwood factory. If all this book did was to identify the myriad of shapes with their proper shape names, it would be a must read for all collectors and dealers. But the author also provides a wealth of detailed information from his vast expertise on the subject of Wedgwood. A history of jasperware production is given, bas-reliefs are identified, the wide range of colors explained and dated, and there is even a section on jewelry. I definitely enjoyed reading the book and have discovered many new pieces that I want to add to my collection. I look forward to new books by this author.

A Collector's Guide: The Shapes of Wedgwood.......2004-02-02

A collector's guide and shape book filled with wonderful color photographs of the many varieties of Wedgwood jasper ware dip. Author Michael Herman shares his knowledge and experience with other collectors.
It not only provides basic information so important to the beginning collector. It is a resource for all collectors in this area. Each piece is identified as fully as possible-including the bas relief figures.
Dark blue does predominate, not a surprise, as it was the most popular color. Still the other jasper ware colors are well represented.
Most of the pieces illustrated were made between the mid 19th century and the virtual end of jasper dip production in 1940. It is indeed refreshing to have a book that focuses on this period in this area of collecting. The timeless appeal of Wedgwood jasper ware is so well illustrated.

Informative and Glossy, w/ Nice Presentation.......2002-02-20

This was a very pleasant Valentine's Day gift from my new wife, she has been very supportive of my bourgeoning gardening hobby, and wanted me to try my hand at some Calla Lilies. The book is divided into two parts, w/ the bulk being taken up by the requisite encyclopedia/directory. The presentation is very slick and attractive, much like a magazine. Large, full color photographs of each bulb type meet the reader, as well as informative sections on the beginnings of the popularization of tulips, and how to cut and propagate them. While not as extensive as `The Bulb Expert' from the seminal Dr. Hessayon series, I was nonetheless happy with the brief descriptions of care, light, uses, soil, and hardiness information which accompanied each entry. This makes a great gift for this time of year, because you can still get a lot of the bulbs into the ground for your late spring, summer plantings. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this as a primer or introduction to bulbs.

Attractive and Informative.......2000-05-30

I have found Ortho's All About Bulbs, as well as all of the other, relatively new, Ortho's "All Abouts", to be lavishly illustrated, and very, no wonderfully, informative. I've browsed other similar books and series, but have found that they all pale (at least in my humble opinion)in comparison. I enthusiastically appreciated the colorful and dazzling photos (what gardener wouldn't), and the very easy to understand text. The structure of the books is quite uniform and logical, further adding to their appeal. In particular, the bulb guide leads the reader through various well explained topics, including bulb lore, propagation, planting, and design considerations, to name a few. The book concludes (as all of the All About plant guides do) with a thorough description, and accompanying color photo, of numerous common, and a few not so common, species. "All in All", Ortho's All About Bulbs comes highly recommended, a great guide with great photos, what could be better.
