I lived in Prague for a month and relied on this book if only for the maps. Of course, it was also quite helpful when it came to recommending English book stores! I've learned not to trust LP's judgment on food, but otherwise they're a handy source.

The Lonely Planet series was recommended to me, and the guide to Prague was the first one I purchased. The recommendation was right on, the guide's reputation is well deserved. Everything I needed to know is included, the places and restaurants were exactly as described, and the maps and walking tours were easy to follow.

Well done.......2006-06-09

Lonely Planet Prague provided a great synopsis of the historical sites, with descriptions often better than those provided by our formal tour guides. The detailed information regarding transportation, costs, and hours were right on. Without the book we would have missed some off-the-beaten-path activities. Our only complaint was that some key restaurants were not included but this is the only area which I believe needs to be improved.

Important info left out!.......2006-05-09

I love Lonely Planet Guides and have used them for many trips in the past, but this book was certainly not complete. One example is the lack of info on marionette shows. It's one of the most popular things to do in Prague and this book only mentions marionettes once, in a short paragraph about the history of theater in Prague. No mention on the places to see a show or what to see. Also, I have never had a travel guide that didn't mention ANYTHING about the train station in the city!! This book did not even have one piece of info on the train stations or how to find them, how to travel from other cities to Prague or how to get to other places from Prague. We had planned to go to Vienna from Prague and had no idea where the train station was, how to get to it, or how to find a train schedule. Thankfully our hotel was able to fill us in on this info. I would NOT recommend using this book as your tour guide for Prague, it isn't thorough by any means.

We took a family trip to Prague. This book gives you several walking tours that will help you thoroughly tour the city. Absolutely would not go to Prague without it!

Useful travel book.......2004-08-31

I had this book with me on a recent trip to Prague. It was very helpful, including the colorful, pull-out maps. We went to two restaurants mentioned in the book, and both experiences were very good. The book also has some "walks" that take you through the different parts of the city, with landmarks clearly marked. It was relatively thin and small, so it was not a pain to carry it all around the city. The maps were probably the most useful for us. I would recommend this book for someone who wanted a good overall picture of Prague and its main attractions. If you want something more in depth, you might want a bigger book.

Okay, but not a real map.......2001-06-13

I bought this for a recent trip to Prague, a city you will get lost in without a detailed map. This map is a great size, but it covers such a small area of Prague in very basic terms, you end up needing another map. If you're buying either the Lonely Planet Prague or even Czech & Slovak Republics, you can easily do without this map, as both contain the same maps along with several more.

Not the best, but helpful for CLEP.......2005-07-05

This book does cover alot of information not needed for CLEP, but it does give you a great guideline on who and what to study for clep and good examples on what questions will look like for the actual clep.
I wanted to ensure I was prepared for the clep, so I purchased this book and disregarded the other 2 comments. Although, they were right about the obscurity, this book still taught me alot.
You don't necessarily need it, but if you want to be prepared, this book will not hurt your bank account that much. I also recommend The Complete Itiots Guide to American Literature (5 stars, check out the reviews), and the Internet. That is all you need.

If you're trying to prepare for the American Lit Clep...........2005-04-02

The other review on this book by "a reader" is very helpful and I recomend you read it as well as this review. I have taken fifteen CLEP tests and am very familiar with how to study for the test. CLEP tests by their very nature a designed to see if the student has a sufficient grasp on the given subject. On tests like American literature or Humanities which cover a wide variety of different works/toppics, I've found that it's best to study the main points and key elements of the subject instead of spending a whole year trying to read a huge list of books. I would not recomend Rudman's book, however, I would recomend buying the Barron's EZ key's for American Literature. It will help you get a quick grasp on what this subject covers. Also, the Official Clep study guide is a great tool for preparing for the tests.

too much obscure, needless information.......1998-08-12

I just took the clep test for engl. lit and Amer. lit. It was much easier than I expected, and I vastly overstudied, due in part to being psyched out by these study guides. I thought I needed to know every silly little obscure thing they covered . To prepare for these tests, I'd recommend instead that you buy the Barron's easy key (about 6 bucks), then look over the list of books covered by either Cliff notes or Barron's book notes ( Barron's is better written) and make a list of the titles they list. Now, armed with that list of commonly assigned books, go to your library and look at the "Magill" masterplots, for an excellent 2-3 page synopsis and critque of these titles. You will save alot of time and money this way -- Zero in on the pertinent stuff and don't get thrown by Rudman's --

This was my first contact with Whiskey and her Afghan. Mysteries galore keep you guessing throughout. The story moves at a fast pace, with a light and humurous touch. I was left wanting more and will certainly be reading other books in the series.

This is a great book. While I love Whiskey and the situations she encounter, I love Abra, the dog, even more. She really keeps Whiskey on her toes. A very enjoyable read, especially if you like "cozy" mysteries.

If you have a sense of humor and strong feelings about dogs--especially other people's dogs--this is the mystery series for you. Realtor Whiskey Mattimoe has been saddled with a very difficult canine, and therein lies lots of humor. The setting is fun, too; author Nina Wright has created a quaint but troubled Michigan tourist town that's a blend between Saugatuck and Traverse City, where the artistic types face off against the conservatives. Mix in a steady stream of tourists, and let the fun begin. In this book, the first in the series, the action starts when a tourist dies on a massage therapist's table--NOT from natural causes. Then another tourist is murdered, and--as the book cover suggests--Abra the Afghan hound complicates everything. I can personally promise that you'll laugh and gasp while reading this series.

Having several Afghan Hounds that own me, Nina Wright has a wonderful star, Abra the Afghan Hound, who helps solve this mystery as only an Afghan Hound can...with every clever trick in the book. Ms. Wright not only captures the essence of the Afghan Hound but she offers suspense, adventure and a huge dose of humor in Whiskey on the Rocks. I rate it right up there with Pink Panther and Inspector Clueso!

I took this book to the pool on a recent 115 degree day. The cover alone helped cool things down. And Wright's rapid-paced tale of kidnapping and murder made me forget the heat. The scene where a certain body slides into frozen Lake Michigan is as thrillingly written as any action sequence I've ever read.

i know this is fiction but...........2007-06-08

I can't believe that an author would write a book about a main character who is so clueless about children. Even though the author creates a very self-sufficient boy, it's the actions of Whiskey that are off-base. When Whiskey finds out through a note she receives from a ex-con that the boy who is in her care is missing, does she start looking for the kid? No, she goes back home and gets drunk and half-naked with her ex-husband. In the morning when the kid still hasn't shown up, does she start looking for him? No, she and her equally clueless employee go on a helicopter ride, where she finally sees the kid being pulled at by a stranger. I know this is purely fiction, but even in fluff like this, one doesn't expect the main character to be that stupid.

I'm always looking for a new mystery series, and I just happened upon this book. I'm definitely hooked. I loved the main character, and I also loved the small town setting. I think the supporting cast was great, and I even liked them more than the mystery.The novel itself is fast paced, and it revolves mainly around Whiskey's lost charge, Chester.

I like lots of kinds of mysteries, from literary to chick-lit. Although this series features a chick-lit type heroine, it's better written and has broader appeal. In fact, I gave copies of this book to several male friends and male family members; they all liked it a lot. The reason? The heroine, Whiskey Mattimoe, is the kind of gal men like. She makes 'em laugh; moreover, she's smart, athletic, and independent enough to earn their respect. This is also a well-constructed mystery with enough suspense to keep you turning pages way past bedtime.

A real tribute for the King of Dogs.......1998-06-04

As a fancier and owner of four Afghans I really enjoy reading this book. Well documented, it provides all you want to know about the breed. My only regret is that The Book is getting old and no newest editions are on sight.

I rated this book as four-star for this two reasons:

First, because I cannot understand why this book is printed in special glossy paper, if 80% of it is mostly text. And we know how special paper adds to price and that must be the reason why this book is quite expensive for my taste.

The second reason is that for a book with this price tag, I'd expect a lot more illustrations and maybe some real pictures, instead of drawings.

Now into the the good aspects! This book is solidly written and covers all aspects of plant propagation. From trees to flowers and bulbs, etc...

There is a good section on propagation from cuttings and all the info you need to start growing plants from seeds, which were my main objectives when I bought this book.

The stratification process of seeds in the refrigerator is also covered, as well as there are some very useful instructions about how should we properly long-term store our own seeds.

As someone said before, there is a very handy chart by the end of the book, with plenty of useful information on the propagation of most of the plants you'd ever think of propagating.

As I said before, I think this book is a bit expensive and not as illustrated as I wish it was, but overall I think it is a good investment for people interested in propagating plants.

It is the kind of complete book that you will keep in your shelf and go search for answers when more doubts arise, as you get more experienced in this loving art.

If you just want to propagate some plants or maybe grow some seeds, I'd also suggest Alan Toogood's book on growing, which is more simple than this one, but on the other hand has plenty of pictures and may be easier for a beginner to follow.

Creative Propagation.......2000-08-14

I am a gardener of many years who has tried propagating plants with some luck. This book is wonderful. On my first try last August (1999) I took about 30 azalea cuttings and every one of them "took". My problem now is what do I do with all of them. :) The propagation table at the end of the book (that lists plants alphabetically)is one of the best I've ever seen. It tells if a plant can be started by seed, cutting or divisions and what time of the year is best. I also did some hydrangeas (100% success) and some crepe myrtle (75%). I have already recommended this book to all my gardening friends and I recommend it to anyone who likes to be surrounded with lots of "plant babies". :)

Excellent book, don't leave this one out of your collection........1998-05-16

Easy to read and complete. Good size to take in to the feild. This book was suggested to me by the Masters at Mt. SI Bonzai, now Eden Gardens (Barton, Ore.) and has proved to be the the only book needed by us as we began to propagate more and more variety at our Puget Sound area nursery.

Excellent analysis of the role of Black American Communists........1998-10-20

This book is an indepth, and intriguing analysis of the role played by African-American Communists, particularly Benjamin J. Davis, in the struggle for Black Liberation. The book is very-well researched and consistently objective, avoiding the standard anti-Communist, anti-Soviet biases we normally encounter.

Dr. Horne presents a liitle known history, the positive role played by the Communist Party, USA (CPUSA), in the struggle for African-American civil rights. He details and corroborates numerous examples of positive Communist involvement and activity in the Black community in the 1930s and 1940s without using the worn out "red scare" or "Communist menace" shibboleths.

He describes a very clear picture of the role played by Benjamin J. Davis, an open Communist from Harlem and twice elected to the New York City Council. It is amazing to read Horne's description of the tremendous support Davis received from both Harlemites and famous Black celebrities.

Dr. Horne's theory that the Black American civil rights establishment was given the narrow choice of renouncing Communist support and Communists in order to win government support for civil rights, appears right on target and certainly supported by history.

A very interesting and informative book.
