The first thing you notice about this book is the beautiful photographs by Michael H. Frances. May you take a single photograph in your visit that is as gorgeous as any of these!

Wilkinson provides a few pages of information about each of the charismatic megafauna in the parks: bison, wolves, elk, cougars, lynxes, and so on. These "chapters" are easily accessible and written at about a middle-school level. The book as a whole is very kid-friendly, though it wasn't necessarily written that way.

The book has very good advice for how, where, and when to spot mammals in these parks. The section on each animal concludes with "where to find bighorn sheep" (or whatever). We've successfully spotted most of these animals, initially relying on the advice here, though we now have a few secrets of our own.

Our favorite charismatic megafauna are bears, wolves, and cougars. We haven't spotted a cougar yet, and we haven't read as much about them. We do have a Wolf Freak in the household, though.

I found the book to be very helpful. Especially paired with "Scenic Driving in Yellowstone & Grand Teton". Other than the cats, we where able to get out early and find the wolves, grizzly, moose etc.

Dissappointing.......2002-04-03

The animal descriptions are very brief and basic. This book might be good for someone with little knowledge of wildlife but doesnt go into much detail on any animal. It also spends too much time on animals that it even states are rarely found in Yellowstone(ie Lynx) and says almost nothing about more common, although less exciting animals(various bird and small mammals).

After buying many books like this I would suggest checking them out of the library for the length of your visit. We did not see the animals in this guide to back up the information and the locations but found it good for basic information about the animals and their habitats etc.

A great resource in identifying what you see in the parks. The pictures allow you to see what these animals look like unlike some books where there is just a drawing.

This is the best book for intermediate Japanese. I didn't find the CD-ROM to be very helpful, however--it seems to be mostly a scheme to hike up the price.

best japanese learning books ever.......2006-03-30

I used the Yookoso series while studying Japanese at university in the 90's. Since then, I have not encountered textbooks to equal these for the beginning student, or as a refresher course. I would recommend them for anyone interested in really learning Japanese, not just memorizing a few vocabulary words and grammar rules.
The audio portion is exceptional as well, for it provides a chance to listen to real Japanese and repeat phrases to improve fluency, but don't worry: the difficulty builds sequentially and goes well with the book. This series challenged me, gave valuable cultural insight, and very quickly weaned me from dependence on romanized character Japanese and First-grade writing.
This is the best textbook system for learning Japanese that I have ever found. Even while I conversed with a native speaker in my studies, the structure and natural dialogues in these books was a valuable resource to practise conversation and get things going naturally!

Well worth the money!

An decent Japanese Textbook.......2006-03-24

This is the second volume of the Yookoso series. One of the main problems with the book is the author expects that will always have access to the first volume of the series. The book does provide some good grammar structures and some good examples of them in use. Alot of the book is written hiragana, katakana,and kanji with explanations in English. The listening exercises for the textbook are extremely hard to do. Also the book does not provide any of the meanings for the kanji you have to use the workbook to learn the kanji. One problem, there does not exist a good source in the textbook on particles.

This is not bad book to learn Japanese from if you are enrolled in a class. You will need some help with a native speaker or your instructor if you want to learn the finer points of the language.

The book is good in forcing you to know the kanji since a lot of the kanji from the first volume does not have any furigana. It good in helping to expand your abilities as a student in Japanese. This book will challenge you help you improve as a Japanese student.

I never really seen or used any other Japanese Textbooks at the College Level so difficult it is to make comparasions.

The CD-Rom that accompanies the textbook is next to useless. The CD-Rom will use vocabulary that is not in the textbook. It will use Kanji without the furigana that is not found in either of the workbooks. Only use the CD-Rom if want a challenge or a test of the material that is covered in the Chapter.

Fanciful wit and dark humor make this book a masterpiece........1998-07-24

Machinery and Mechanical Devices, isn't just a clip-art book. This sixty-page presentation of copyright free illustrations from the 1800's is a humorous personal expression of the wonderment and fear associated with functionally obscure mechanical devices. Unlike other clip-art books which present the material as individual objects separated by a lot of white space, this book is brought to much higher levels of interest. The way Rowe does this is by creating collages of illustrations on each page - not simply displaying them piece-by-piece. He even goes so far as to make up names for many of his concoctions, and adds other details such as twinkling stars and abstract patterns. The result is a highly entertaining picture book useful not only for the art it displays, but also as a catalog of visual and humorous ideas. Enjoy!

Words cannot explain how great this book is. It goes back and tells you about the great Mastiffs of the past, how they were bred, and how modern Mastiffs came to be. The photos alone are a marvel. This is a treasure that never should have been put out of print. It is the kind of book that Mastiff lovers and breeders will be reading forever.

Book contains about 370 pages divided into 11 major sections. Sections are Annuals (29 pages), Bulbs (29 pages), Fruits (34 pages), Herbs and Vegetables (30 pages), Houseplants (30 pages), Lawns (26 pages), Perennials (30 pages), Roses (28 pages), Shrubs (32 pages), Trees (30 pages), and Vines & Groundcovers (30 pages).

What makes the book unique is that each section discusses the material for every month (hence the title, "month by month"). Each month contains about 2 pages of instructions for planning, planting, care, watering, fertilizer, pests, and pruning. Each section starts with several pages introducing the topic.

Example of Melinda Myers advice: Tree section (April), "Do not prune Oaks and Honeylocust once growth begins. Wait until the dormant season to avoid disease problems".

Oops, I wish I would have had this book earlier. I did prune my Oak in April a few years back, and I now have a disease problem.

Besides the great plant instructions, the books contains amazing maps of Wisconsin (page size maps with county names). Maps contain USDA Cold Hardiness, Annual Precipation, Average First Frost, and Average Last Frost. Also includes lists of crop dates, UW Extension Service addresses, dry tolerate perennials, and much much more.

This is an excellent wealth of plant tips for anyone gardening in Wisconsin. It's a must have book!
