Customer Reviews:
A wonderful resource for tourists and New Yorkers alike.......2006-11-20
NFT is a fantastic resource for anyone planning a trip to NYC. The book is not a traditional tour guide. There are no "top 5" or "must lists" on this book. Instead, you get a book full of detailed maps of NYC along with a listing of restaurants, shops, pharmacies, newsagents, coffee shops, tourist sites, museums, etc. etc. etc. During our trip, my husband was amazed that I knew exactly where to find the nearest Starbucks, or where to go to pickup the subway to Times Square, or where the closest bookstore was, little knowing that I had this handy little book. It also has maps of some of the most popular venues, museums and sights, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yankees Stadium, and the like. What particularly amused me was that as we were walking around the campus of NYU, we popped into a local newspaper shop that catered to students and found that this book was the only New York tour guide/map for sale.
I highly recommend this little black book to anyone contemplating a trip to NYC. I am big planner so I load myself with tour guides to help me plan our trip. And even with all the planning, I knew that I only needed one book to take to our trip and NFT was it. As the saying goes, "don't leave home without it."
Well needed and used book. Get this if you are visiting NY.......2006-09-27
This book is amazing. If you actrully use it, you will find it indespensible. The good points.
The subway map in the back is crucial. Especially once you see the ones the ground transportation people will give you. The map has stops and transfer points.
The detailed maps in the begining have tones of info and are repeated with diffrent info as to not clutter them. The bus routes and landmarks are key here.
The plethora of other information in the rest of the books is interesting and helpful. It's divided nicely and has information that could prove useful in a jam.
The bad
Not having a detailed map of the huge maze like central park. Is needed. Wait. My bad there is one in the "parks and Places" section. Nevermind.
Mostly the city is shown to great detail. The outer bouroghs like queens, broklyn, the bronx ect. go un-noticed. If you are spending a great deal of time out there, maybe something else is best for you. but if your in the city this is great.
Resturants are great to show you the diverse flavor of the city. But, if your on a budget and looking for a Mcd's then your out of luck. By the way if you are going to the met and hope there's fast food close by. nope. Not close at all. The nearist fast food is six blocks away. Of course like the book says there are plenty of street vendors.
Well thats it. For the bad should not stop you from getting this book. It's easy to carry around and very useful. Before you go to NY you should look this book over and read the many sections in it. It would only help you more that way. I spent a week in new york and this was indespencible. I used it every day and took it everywhere. The only time I felt lost was when I exited a subway and had no ideal which way I was facing and which direction to walk in.
Don't leave home without it.......2006-06-03
My brother-in-law, who lives on Manhattan's upper West side, pulled out his NFT when we met for lunch in the Financial District. Immediately, I leafed through the whole thing, looking for info that I needed for my 5-day stay in NYC. It had everything - subway & bus routes, restaurants, bike paths, a decent map of Central Park - in a small profile, easily fitting into a jacket or outside pocket. One of the things I disliked about travelling in NYC is having to pull out a map when trying to navigate. This, to me, simply announces "I'm a TOURIST," which in certain areas may be considered undesirable. But the small profile of the NFT makes it easy (and quick) to focus in on the part of town your are in, as well as the part of town where you want to go.
Right after lunch, I found one in a bookstore - but in the future will think ahead to order off Amazon and save a couple of $$.
My only complaints are pathetically minor. One, the market and restaurant listings did not include a phone number, requiring access to a phone book or another call to directory assistance. Two, it wasn't always clear exactly where the subway stops were located. The 1-2-3 at 72nd Street is pretty obvious, the 3 at 110th was not.
Grab the NFT and travel swiftly and safely.
A Lifesaver, and Easy to Use for Tourists Too!.......2006-04-13
This book saved my life when I was visting a friend in New York. The subway system can be complicated, but this book does a great job of breaking down the city as well as offering locations of restaurants, theatres, museums, and more. Includes a mini subway/bus map that is really helpful. As long as you know where you want to go, this book can get you there. The best way to use the book is for planning for a day ahead and figuring out routes, etc. Worth every penny.
Almost Overwhelming!.......2006-03-13
This small book is very comprehensive. I feel very overwhelmed with all of the information that's covered in this book. I haven't moved to NYC yet. That's the only reason for the 4 out of 5 stars. I don't think I will really know how good this book is until I'm there. But, with this book in hand, I can't imagine getting lost in Manhattan.

Not For Tourists Guide to Brooklyn features clear, easy-to-read maps and graphics, listings of key services, restaurants, shops, schools, entertainment venues, public transportation, parks, pull out maps and more. NFT Guides put everything residents need to take advantage of the wealth of local services and resources at their fingertips in a convenient size.
Customer Reviews:
Not for Tourists or Anyone Who Knows and Loves Brooklyn.......2006-03-02
While the alleged intent of this Guide is commendable, it only covers recently gentrified neighborhoods. Unfortunately for Brooklyn and for true Brooklynites, what is important to the onward and upward group of society is not a true measure of what this great borough is really about. The only good part of the book is the map; otherwise, a BIG disappointment!
NFT Pocket Guide to ONLY A SMALL PART OF Brooklyn.......2004-06-27
As a person that somewhat knows their way around Brooklyn and has recently moved there, I found this book to be grossly incomplete in content. I was expecting more, as far as the area that it covered. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the NFT Guides, they are usually a great resource for locals (please know that I also own a copy of NFT Guide to New York City, which I LOVE, and find extremely useful). As vast and expansive of an area that Brooklyn is, this book only covers a mere seven little neighborhoods along the west edges of Brooklyn (Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights/Downtown/DUMBO, Fort Greene, Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill/Carroll Gardens, Park Slope/Prospect Heights, and Bay Ridge). Unless you frequent one of those neighborhoods of Brooklyn, don't bother buying this book. As well put together as the NFT-NYC guide was, I expected this one to be just as information-packed; however, it failed miserably by giving info for only a few select areas of a borough that would be the 4th largest city in the U.S, if it stood alone as a city, and is home to some 2.5 million residents. Hopefully, NFT Guide-Brooklyn editors will think about the rest of us that live in the many other neighborhoods of Brooklyn when they come out with their 2nd edition.
Not supposed to be historical.......2004-05-26
This guide is....NOT FOR TOURISTS. There isn't supposed to be history or commentary. It's for those of us who live here who wonder if our bank is in this neighborhood, etc.
Disappointing.......2004-05-07
I was rather disappointed by this "guide"; it's simply a collection of names & addresses, a teeny bit of commentary, and a map printed on not-very-durable paper.
I would suggest passing this "guide" by; get a copy of "The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn" for history & background, and a "Streetwise Brooklyn" map -- or just use Google.

Easy to use, covers a lot of material, inexpensive.......2002-04-21
This easy-to-use reference shows how the words are built, with things like verb endings, infixes, suffixes. It's small, but it has a lot of useful material; for the price it's OUTSTANDING.
The SECOND edition is completely revised, by a different author (excellent teaching credentials), vastly more material -- both more gramatical info, and a wealth of additional vocabulary, plus there is also a Quechua-English section as well as English-Quechua, making it an even more valuable reference.
Some things are perhaps because Lonely Planet has standardized them -- I doubt you'll be asking anyone for a date in Quechua -- but it's still material to practice breaking apart the pieces.
I love the illustrations!
Not at all a necessity.......2001-12-27
Are you planning to adventure alone into the highlands of Peru? If not, and I wouldn't really recommend it anyway, then this book isn't for you. I recently spent three weeks in Peru visiting the Cusco, Ollyantaytambo, Sacred Valley, and Lake Titicaca areas and never needed it. Quechua is the language still used by the porters and residents of the highlands, but everyone else speaks Spanish. I was mislead by some travel guides to believe that Quechua was spoken in the main cities and that I'd need it to do pretty much anything. The reality is that you'll just need to speak Spanish or have a good Spanish phrasebook and on the off occasion that you have need to speak to someone who only speaks Quechua, you're more than likely to have a guide with you that can do just that.
That said, it is always interesting to be exposed to new languages and the historical culture of an area. Quechua is a language better understood through direct instruction with a guide rather than attempting to learn it from a text.
Good short introduction to Basic Quechua for Tourists.......1999-04-21
Teaches the phrases a tourist would use to travel in the Andes. You won't be able to carry on much of a conversation, But the natives will warm up to you for trying.
Quechua Learners Advised to Start Here.......1999-02-09
If you want to learn the language of the Incas, you won't find yourself well served by the book publishing industry. Even if you were to ask for a grammar on Quechua in one of the little bookshops in Cuzco, you'd likely receive a Quechua/Spanish pamphlet used to teach Andean children Spanish, and written by priest with grammatical terminology more appropriate to Latin.
We English speakers, however, are fortunate to have this little phrasebook. Although I would have preferred something with much greater depth, I have to admit that as an absolute beginner, I'm best off starting here. The words chosen are those of use to the tourist and trekker. It's more than a phrasebook in that it gives the reader some insight into and practice with Quechua's suffixes, which are critical for mastery of the language. My one complaint is the pronunciation guide, which describes as 'plosives' sounds which are properly called 'ejectives'. I grant you these are arcane linguistic terms, but they are meaningful to a few of us....

Smarter Than the Average Bear.......2006-12-11
You may or may not know that this book is one of many in a slew of books published by Barrons called "The Breednamehere Handbook". Well, I own or have owned over half of them and I find this one by far more useful if you want more than what most books in breed book series give you: a dash of breed-specific information you can find anywhere and the rest just generalized dog care information with or without some breed specific advice thrown in the mix and thats it. This one is not just a repetitive review of the general dog care information you can find in thousands and thousands of books. So it would be of use to you if you already have such a book.
The book starts going through easy to find German Shepherd Dog history and then basic dog care with your average dash of breed-specific care nuances thrown in here and there (though it is more thorough than most) but in about the middle that changes and it finishes off with chapters you would probably find quite cool if you are somebody that wants to get active with your dog. It thoroughly discusses a very dog-friendly, non abusive yet authorative training method you might want to consider, and gives you all kinds of tips for training your dog and being successful in obedience, schutzhund, and/or tracking. It certainally doesn't replace books that specialize in these subjects but my oh my it is unique and extremely helpful advice that you would be wise to add to your knowledge pool. Its advice accumulated over decades by somebody who has been successful in all the aforementioned venues and had to go through a lot of trial and error to work through the challenging problems she met along the way that threatned her desire to excell.
If what I just told you interests you, but you're still not sure if you want to get this book, see if you meet all of this criteria:
-You're open minded and not afraid to listen to a point of view that may be different from yours.
-Own a medium sized or larger dog.
-Are interested in the sports of obedience, schutzhund, and/or tracking.
-Love reading about dogs and want something unique and interesting rather than the same oh same oh.
-Not going to use this book as your sole training reference but rather include it in a library of good books.
a fresh breath in dog training.......2006-06-08
I have met the author of this book. She is training my dog. The reason this book is inconsistent with other methods of training is that the author developed her own methods because she wasn't satisfied with other methods. I've also met one of her German Shepherds. He is so well trained he listens better than most humans. This is a good resource for someone who wants a fresh approach to training that still works.
Please Steer Clear.......2006-03-13
This was the most appallingly awful book on German Shepherds I have encountered. Poorly written, and inconsistent with most other training methods.
Better off getting a general book like ABC.

Customer Reviews:
I've seen better.......2007-06-08
some of the info in this book is untrue...Color of a Shepherd DOESN'T EFFECT A DOG'S BEHAVIOR, for Example Black Shepherds are calmer and white Shepherds are Hyper. Any Shepherd can be hyper, my Sable Shepherd was hyper up til he died 12-12-06 at 7 months old. So COLOR has NOTHING to do with a dog's Temperament or Behavior
Extremely basic information about the breed........2007-03-18
It is basically a picture book with captions and some information in small paragraphs. It explains all things in basic terms and pictures. It has helpful information about the breed in history and relatives and some basic training styles to common health problems. It is more of a quick reference book, like cliff notes for more detailed books on GSDs, than anything else. I would recommend for younger readers or people that really like the breed and want just a basic, picture filled book to introduce people to the breed. I would also recommend for someone shopping for a dog and has yet to chose the breed, it explains how to pick a puppy and what is needed for the German Shepherd through out its life and would be a good reference to compare different breeds.
excellent info.......2004-02-24
this book is a great source of info not seen in any of the other Shepherd books. It is sort of small, but goes very in depth into specific Shepherd health problems, Shepherd traits, diet, and anything else. I liked the fact that it was Shepherd oriented the whole way throguh, unlike many other dog books. I highly reccomend this, even if you already have a GSD.
A book full of striking photos and good advice.......2002-06-02
I have had this book for some time and have recently decided to revisit it. I am glad I did. Along with the incredibly good quality photos of the many different 'models' of GSD that are available (and so co-operative for the camera!),there is lots of sound advice on anything you could possibly need regarding your GS. It is a bit short on words, but this makes the information concise and easy to remember. I particularly liked the first aid advice, so this book could prove invaluable and is small enough to be portable, so the advice can be at hand should you need it... The book would be great for a new GSD owner (perhaps included by the breeder on purchase of the pup?), as well as the experienced, especially if you like pictures of nice, everyday, non show dogs!
very good short no nonsense book.......2001-05-24
Compact size. Carefully put together information. Solid basics given without too many words but understandable. Pictures are very helpfull and exceptional quality. This is cheap and good book for novice GS owner. I favor this book out of 4 i bought before.
Customer Reviews:
only basics covered.......2002-04-04
This book is very pleasing to the eye. It is laid out well and has many color photographs on each glossy page. This book is not breed specific and has only the very basics on general dog care. I did like this book and really enjoyed the photographs and page lay-outs but if you are looking for something in depth on german shepherd dogs or general dog care (health, obediance, or whatever) this is not the book for you. Just the very basics here with little or no info on the breed itself.

Customer Reviews:
A good book for ideas and guidance.......2007-03-08
Hmm. The previous reviews baffle me a little as one can tell from the title this is not a one-size-fits-all book as each region in the country has different requirements and the title doesn't point to any one in particular. This book has great sketches with general plant categories, quantity needed, and placement guides to help you achieve a similar look in your yard. I'm not an expert gardener by any means, but I would consider myself a bit more savvy than a novice. Not one of these plans in its entirety was what I was looking for but I took bits and pieces of several and drew up my own sketch for my yard. Then by looking around my city for things I like and talking with my local nursery personnel, I was able to select the perfect plants to fit my sketch -- all for free (well, the plants cost me money of course!). So if you are looking for someone to do it all for you, this is not the book and you are probably better off hiring someone. If you want guidance and inspiration, this is a great book and if you find a particular plan you love, you can order it and get all of the information handed to you at a reasonable cost.
Not what it looked like.......2004-05-12
I thought this book would come with the plans inside, based on the title and subtitle. But it is just a book of plans to order. There are no plant keys, just sketches of various landscaping plans that you can send away for. I am completely dissatisfied and would like to return this item.
This is a marketing book.......2003-06-12
This book has a bunch of very specific plans for designs that you must BUY. While you can get a few ideas from it, it is very vague and general, and yet, geared to a specific-lot plan. Browse it if you like, but don't bother to buy it.
A good book -- but a little misleading........1999-10-20
The book is good -- for an advertising piece for landscaping plans. It is well illustrated and does include a lot of information on landscaping. It helped me. HOWEVER, each landscaping plan has an 800 number with a plan code. For $45 plus the company will send you a detailed plan that is adapted to your zone. Frankly I would have preferred to know this up front. I should have been more suspicious when I saw the low book price. Would I recommend the book? Yes - if you want some ideas about achieving different looks in a suburban garden. But unless you are willing to pay more, don't look to this guide for plant recommendations.

Book Description
This book sets out to examine the medieval understanding of Aristotle's famous discussion of "weakness of the will" (akrasia, incontinentia) in the seventh book of his Nicomachean Ethics. The medieval views are outlined primarily on the basis of the commentaries on Aristotle's Ethics by Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Walter Burley, Gerald Odonis and John Buridan. An investigation of the earlier Augustinian discussion concerning reluctant actions (invitus facere) rounds out the study. The recent studies of weakness of the will have neglected the medieval philosophers. The present volume fills this gap in historical research and shows that especially the conceptual refinement of the fourteenth-century discussion makes contributions that are comparable to those of twentieth-century philosophers.

The essential guide to classical book design.......2003-07-02
there is little to say other than the fact that this book is essential reading for all current and aspiring book designers. Tschichold's views seem limiting at first, but his knowledge is based on years of careful research into the basis of our written culture. many will choose to deviate from his instruction in small or great ways, but to practice the craft of book typography (or typography in general) without this information would be unwise.
A must read for any designer........2000-04-04
This collection of 23 essays on book design and typography should be read at least once by all typographers and students of design. Written over a period spanning 42 years, these essays cover many aspects of typography from paper color to tight typesetting to page proportions. A few of the ideas presented in the essays may indeed be outdated now (due mainly to the economic freedoms in modern digital design), but they are few and are still important from an historical persective. Folloowing the rules of design presented here will help ensure a well designed book that does not detract from the contents in any way and best serves to allow that content to speak for itself. Even if you want to always break the rules of design, isn't it better to understand why and how those rules came to be? Of interesting note is that Jan himself was in his youth a radical rulebreaker in his designs, but he learned when it was best to work inside and outside the rules to present the best effect, his design legacy shows how effective he was, and how influencial he remains to this day.
Interesting - but horribly old fashioned!.......1999-08-15
The views are a little old fashioned for me. Mr Tschichold is very much of the old school. He expounds many "rules" of book design, but most of these are his personal taste, and are presented in a high-handed, dictatorial, and condescending tone. There is no room whatsoever for creativity in book design in his view, instead all books must follow his design.
Useful for reminding us of some of the core principles of typography and book design, but if all publishers agreed with the author's views, the book world would be a very boring place. I would like to see a debate between Jan Tschichold and David Carson!!
A masterly exposition of typographic excellence.......1999-08-14
For those who work in design, or those who just love books, Tschichold's work is a must-have. It'll cause you to re-evaluate your own work - and it will also let you look at the books your reads with a new appreciation. The book itself is well-designed, too... as one might expect!
Changed the way I look at books........1999-05-06
I'll never look at a book or booklet again without judging it against the conventions set forth by Mr. Tschichold. Book size, type style, readability, binding, paper, text block placement, aesthetics and a dozen other minor details will not escape the scrutiny of my newfound expertise.
