Customer Reviews:
Love this guide.......2006-02-25
This is the 4th edition that I've bought. Great book when traveling.
my travel bible.......2005-09-13
I first picked up a Spartacus guide while on my first trip to Europe. I could imagine planning a trip anywhere without the newest edition. It helps me plan, not only what to do somewhere, but where to go in the first place.
It gives you very good info on the countries, then breaks it down into cities and towns.
I have used it to find hotels, restaurants and bars, saunas, stores, everything.
The one thing I don't like is the key for the abbreviated descriptors is in book mark form, so if you lose that, you can be lost as to what some things mean. I usually carry a second photo-copy. Other than that, it has been a very valued resource
Book Description
Includes 20,000 entries with Korean words in romanized Korean and Korean characters.
Customer Reviews:
Obsolete Words.......2006-04-12
This dicitonary is OK. When my Korean teacher (I am an expat living in Seoul, so I trust that she knows Korean backwards & forwards)checks my homework, often she says, "no one uses that word any more." It is also common to not find words that I need in this dictionary.
Romanizing Korean is a bad habit.......2003-03-23
I second Minerva Rheault's motion: Romanizing Korean is not a good idea. However, my objection is somewhat different--any serious student of the Korean language will eventually look up items which are not in this dictionary. The sooner that student learns the Korean alphabet, the better.
Would you serve a drink to an alcoholic?
If not, then don't serve Romanization to a student of the Korean language.
Too expensive and ineffective.......2000-01-19
English-Korean is all right, but the Korean-English section is terribly confusing. Since the dictionary uses hangul, why are the Korean words alphabetized according to the romanizations? For a beginning Korean student, learning the hangul alphabetical order is challenge enough. Add a seemingly erratic romanization (there is no one standard system of writing Korean words in Roman letters), and you have a very confused student! For this much money, find a dictionary that is strictly hangul without confusing romanizations.
This book is great for people who want to learn Korean.......1999-06-24
I received this book the other day and in my opinion it was everything I hoped it would be. It suprised me because unlike other books it supplied with approximately 20,000 common words both in Korean and English reference. Those of you who are learning Korean or English would find this a great help.
A very complete Korean-English-Korean dictionary........1998-07-28
I found the text to really hold up to high standards as far as having fairly clear translations, also all words are written in the Korean character set as well as the translated phonetic form. It also includes a nice summary of the transcription system to make learning easier.

I love this book. The art is fresh and different and appeals to youth. I especially like the tips that appear at the beginning of the book that show creative ways to use the clipart.
Book Description
From the earliest daguerreotypes and cartes de visite to captivating portraits from photographers on the forefront of today's art scene, the images in The Dog: 100 Years of Classic Photography are as stunning as the dogs are endearing. Just as dog lovers have long been aware that man's best friend is among the most naturally photogenic of subjects, contemporary greats such as Keith Carter and Sally Mann have also picked up on the undeniable chemistry that exists between canines and the camera. But in The Dog: 100 Years of Classic Photography from the editor of the landmark The Dog Observed, it's apparent that the masters from the earlier part of the century were also well-acquainted with the dog-as-subject genre. In Robert Capa's Rome (1943) a young soldier gingerly places a small puppy in his combat helmet. Protection, loyalty, camaraderie—all themes associated with war are evoked in a single photograph of a boy and a dog. Likewise, Robert Doisneau brings to light a Paris that is at once familiar without being trite, simply by photographing a dog looking into the camera while his master turns away on the Pont des Arts. Each photograph in this remarkable collection reflects a unique moment in time, and the sometimes surprising, occasionally humorous, always intimate relationship people have with their dogs. Whether it's the fine art photography buff or the most dedicated of dog lovers, The Dog: 100 Years of Classic Photography is guaranteed to set more than just a few tails wagging.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful gift for dog-lovers.......2003-07-21
I got this as a gift for a friend who loves dogs and they thought it was wonderful! It's got tons of gorgeous pictures - even if you are not necessarily a dog person you will enjoy the skill it took to create such beautiful images.
Wonderful Book.......2000-12-20
A great book. As a collector of dog images, this is a wonderful addition. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Dog-loving Photographer Raves about this Book!.......2000-12-10
This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves dogs or is interested in the history of photography-and if you happen to fall into both these categories at once, you'll certainly turn and turn the pages with enormous pleasure and enlightenment-not to mention the therapeutic effects gained from laughing out loud! Everyone I know who has a dog (or would want to have a dog if they could) is getting this book from me for Christmas.
Book Description
Our fourth edition promises to be the most user-friendly Matchbox collector's guide ever produced. While most publications on this subject are organized by model number or year of introduction, this book is arranged alphabetically by model name and description. Well over a thousand photographs are included in this latest edition, with multiple variations pictured of selected models, all incorporated into a cohesive guide to early Lesney models, the Matchbox basic (1 - 75) series, Two-Packs, Matchbox Collectibles, 2004 values. AUTHORBIO: Dana Johnson is an authority on collectible toy cars, including Matchbox, Hot Wheels, and many diecast models. His extensive personal collection includes mostly diecast models from all over the world. He has written several books: Matchbox Toys, 1947 to 2003, Toy Car Collector's Guide, and Collector's Guide to Diecast Toys Scale Models. REVIEW: This book will have collectors racing to the bookstores. It is an all-new revised edition, this time organized alphabetically by model name and description for ease in identification. Well over 1,000 photographs are included.

Matchbox collecting supplement, not a necessity.......2005-10-10
I collect superfast Matchbox from 1969-present. This book only lists 1-75 (1/64th scale) Matchbox cars which is fine for my use. It is good becasue it lists all models in alphabetical order so you can cross-reference the number (1-75) of the model - most model numbers are not imprinted on late model cars so it is helpful in that respect. However, I found it lacking in the number of variations it listed. There is no consistent differentiation between wheel type (other than RW and SF), interior color, stickers/decals or other minor variations. This guide does not use the same numbering system as Charlie Mack's Encyclopedia (e.g. 14 A 3) making it difficult to have the references compliment each other. This guide does list more recent models where as Charlie Mack's guide is typically long overdue when a new edition comes out. But again, this one is not as complete regarding model variation so you may not know if you are collecting all the variations of a particular model you want in your collection. Another positive point of this book though is that not all pictures are of perfect cars -- the cars in the photos have a little play wear and is more reflective a practical collectors cars rather than some ideal collection most of us will never have. Lastly, in comparison to Charlie Mack's guide, I find it nice becasue most of this book does dedicate it's picture space to the 1-75 models. One of the dissappointments I have found with Mr. Mack's guide is that it lists a lot of subtle variation (i.e. light blue, mid blue and dark blue Soopa Coopa) but does not show pictures on how to tell the difference (neither does this one -- it doesn't even try to differentiate). Also, much of the picture space in Mr. Mack's guide is with models that no one I know really collects (i.e. NOT 1-75 series, super kings and models of yesteryear). I'm still not sure where 1/2 of the pics in Charlie Macks book come from (I've been collecting MB superfast for 20 years) -- perhaps thats why it is called an encyclopedia. Dana Johnson's book simplifies things but does not take it to the next level by any means.
Basically, I use Dana Johnson's book as a supplement to find model numbers so I can look up varaitions in late model cars in Charlie Mack's guide. I do think Mr. Macks guide can be too complete, in that it lists more model variations than most people can possibly collect. However, Dana Johnson's guide is too incomplete. I prefer Mr. Macks guide becasue it lists all known variations and allows me to decide which variations I think are significant to collect.
everything covered.......2005-09-20
It is amazing to see every single matchbox diecast ever made into production grouped under one title. You can easily assess the value of your cars and hit the road to find precious collectables with this very usefull guide.
Collectors Book.......2004-12-15
Interesting book with a bias in its pictures towards Matchbox models released in the last 10 years. Great that it concentrates almost wholly on the 1-75 series Matchbox models which is all I collect. Very useful if combined with other books as a model identification guide, especially as this one is in alphabetical order and up to 2003 year. I would rate it as less than useful in terms its value to me as a price guide. There are better and more accurate books around reflecting international prices especially of the 1953 to 1969 series issues.
An Unbiased Summary by the Author.......2004-06-22
The benefit of this book is in its arrangement. For the first time in any toy car price guide, models are listed alphabetically by model name, making this the easiest-to-use Matchbox toy collector's guide ever published.
The only compromise, due to time constraints by the publisher, is that the book only lists three-inch models, which leaves out Major Pack, Kingsize, Models of Yesteryear, Skybusters, and larger Matchbox Collectibles, hence the 4-star rating. This will thankfully be remedied with the release of Volume 2 in 2005.

Customer Reviews:
Not well organized and incomplete listing.......2006-11-13
I purchased this book specifically to look up the value of my 1991 limited edition porcelain bride and the porcelain collection wasn't even listed. This listing is not complete and poorly organized.
Useful reference for this niche collectable..........2000-05-27
This book is full of good information. It has lists of (seemingly) every Madame Alexander doll ever made. It has relatively accurate pricing (although be aware that online auctions often make such price guides irrelevant). My only quibble is that I wish it had many more pictures than it does, so as to make identifying dolls easier. Other than that, it's a fine book.
An important, seminal doll collector's guide........2000-04-06
Linda Crowsey's Madame Alexander appears in a pamphlet-style booklet which may be lost without spine lettering, but which provides an important, specific doll collector's guide to this series.

Packs over 4,000 photos into a gallery.......2001-12-08
Now in it's tenth and updated editionm Toys & Prices 2003 from Krause is a very fine guide for dealers and collectors which packs over 4,000 photos into a gallery of popular collectible toys. From Barbie dolls and lunch boxes to games and battery operated toys, black and white photos accompany most of the listings, with a centerfold splash of color.
Latest Edition Of The Popular Toys Guide.......2000-11-09
I used and reviewed last year's edition (2000 issue), and find this brand new 2001 issue even better. There are 958 pages (6xx9") in this volume, with more than 700 black and white photos. There's an 8 page color section. The authors have updated the listings of over 20,000 toys in up to three condition grades. This expanded edition now includes some of the "newer" toys such as Weebles, and TV toys such as those based on Howdy Doody, Scooby Doo, Pee Wee Herman, and the Flintstones. Additional new chapters cover space toys and robots. Each section contains background information about the topic. If you can't find the toy in this book, you'll have problems finding it in any book. Very, very comprehensive. Toy collectors will use it often.
Has become one of the best tools in my pricing toolbox!.......2000-06-20
I highly recommend this book for anyone needing a comprehensive overview of just about any toy you could imagine.
The Best Toy Resource Book I've Seen.......1999-10-26
This book has more items than many of the other toy books you will find here. I know, I have 2 others and they don't come close to the number of toys this book has listed. There are plenty of images too, 2 to 4 on every fourth page or so. There are 925 pages here with about 50 entries per page. So, if you're looking for quantity, look no further.
THE year 2000 toy collector's guide book........1999-10-01
Massive 944 page book containing toys and prices updated for the year 2000. Included are 500 black and white photos and an 8 page color section. Detailed listings for over 19,500 toys made from 1843 to 1999. It covers toys from action figures, coloring books, erector sets, to PEZ containers, restaurant premiums and Rock and Roll, to View-Master Reels and western toys. There are more than 55,000 current values provided !! Brief histories of major categories provide useful information. Toy collectors will find it of great value, especially when bidding on internet auctions. A book you'll refer to often.

A Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica (Comstock Book)
ASIN: 0847819841
Release Date: 1996-09-15 |
Book Description
With its lush rainforests, mist-shrouded volcanoes and abundant wildlife, Costa Rica is a vision of a tropical Eden. Stretched between two oceans and straddling Central America's rugged continental divide, it is among the most beautiful countries in the western hemisphere.
Costa Rica is recognized as a pioneer in the enviromental movement. In the early 1970s the goverment set out to protect the rich natural heritage by creating one of the most important systems of national parks and reserves in the world. This network of protected areas now comprises more than 15 percent of the entire country, including samples of Costa Rica's many varied life zones from highland cloud forest to dry coastal scrub and offshore coral reefs.
Kevin Schafer has been able to record much of this landscape and wildlife during five expeditions that took him to the rainforest of Corcovado on the Pacific coast, to the dry forest of the northwest, to the volcanoes, and to the mountains of the Talamanca Range. Through his vivid photographs and engaging text he creates a compelling portrait of an exotic tropical paradise.

Kevin Schafer's gorgeous photographs and thoughtful and well-written prose make Costa Rica come alive. This beautiful book definitely makes me yearn to visit Costa Rica sometime soon!
Realistic photography.......2001-06-13
Costa Rica; Forests of Eden is a spectacular book with spectacular photos. The photos are realistic, they give a good view of how things really look. No tricks are used in the photography, so when you go to Costa Rica yourself you can actually see it as it is photographed. The text that goes with the photos give good information about ecotourism and about the environment and animals that are on the photos. The book is made with care of the photographer.

Costa Rica: The Forests of Eden.......2000-09-09
Here in one book were all the shots of flora and fauna that I missed. Upon opening the first page, I was instantly transported back to the rainforest. At times, I felt the author had stood in the same spot that I did to take his photographs. Glorious color that captures the mood, emotions and life in the rainforest. A beautiful book to give anyone who has been to Costa Rica or who can only be an armchair traveler.
Nothing Captures Costa Rica Like this Book!.......1997-12-26
Dear Kevin Schaefer: Saw your lovely book about Costa Rica at the Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge last week and HAD to have it. It was $80 in a San Jose book shop, but I'm happy to see that it's much less thru Amazon.com. I've ordered it and hope to have it soon. Nothing else I ever saw captures CR quite like it. The photographs are beautiful and the text insiteful. It truly is a work of love. I recommend it highly to anyone who loves that country and it's special places and wildlife like we do. Thank you, and I hope it sells well! Kathy Dickey
