Book Description
In this fourth edition of Uganda: The Bradt Travel Guide, Africa specialist Philip Briggs provides fully updated information on every aspect of the country's tourist infrastructure, from national parks and gorilla reserves to Lake Victoria and the Ssese Islands. Uganda's attractions for the natural history enthusiasts are almost legendary. This guide features the places to see mountain gorillas and other primates, and the best reserves for catching glimpses of the country's 1,000 species of bird, which should keep even the most ardent birdwatchers happy. It is an essential companion for backpackers who will relish Uganda's compact travel circuit, including hiking opportunities in the Ruwenzori Mountains and exploration of Uganda's largest national park, the Murchison Falls. Uganda offers a chance to enjoy natural history away from the hoards visiting southern African safari destinations, and is a country readily accessible for travelers of all budgets.
Customer Reviews:
Well written review.......2007-08-24
I'll start by saying we've not travelled yet, but we've used books on other coutries over the years, and this one is well written, and seems well though out and presented. It has covered everything I've wanted to know before travelling very well.
I'll comment on the accuracy after November!
Merv.
Great preparation.......2006-07-06
We have read this book front to back and though we don't leave for a few weeks we feel so much more informed about opportunities within and country and tips to be better prepared. Great resource!
One of the best travel guides ever.......2004-08-29
I've traveled to over 40 countries in the past 15 years and read between 1-3 travel guides before going to each country.
This is one of the best travel guides I've ever read. Very detailed, current, no superficiality. Strong on history, sights and culture. I really can't think of how this book could have been improved.
And read Abyssinian Chronicles before you go to Uganda. Wonderful character development and a Ugandan's perspective on history and culture in that country.
Uganda: the Bradt Travel Guide (4th edition).......2003-12-02
Philip Briggs has produced a masterpiece with his 4th edition of 'Uganda: the Bradt Travel Guide'. As a specialist tour operator who has visited Uganda before, I am familiar with other Uganda guidebooks and Bradt's latest edition is without a doubt, the best around. Everything the prospective visitor needs to know about Uganda is contained in this superb book. Briggs has done an exceptionally thorough job of updating the guide and I am confident that it will enable readers not only to see the best of the country, but also to understand it.
Bradt Guide to Uganda, 4th Edition.......2003-12-01
This is a very well written and comprehensive guide.
It provides excellent information on wildlife as well
as culture, history, and politics. The book is full of
details on these, and other, subjects, but is consistently
lively and interesting. It is also very well balanced, pointing
out both the delights and difficulties of travel in Uganda.
I am quite familiar with Uganda and with the various tour guides, and this is by far the best guide to the country
which I have yet seen.
Book Description
Detailed, four-color paintings and a question-and-answer text bring to life the traditional life, customs, and everyday world of the Iroquois - one of the most powerful and influential of the Indian nations.
Customer Reviews:
If You Lived with the Iroquois.......2006-02-23
This is a great book for middle school aged children. I used it to study the Iroquois in my social studies classes. It is very informative without overwhelming younger children with too much information. The book was fun to read, and held the interest of my students. Also, I made my own worksheets/tests by dividing the book into different sections. The students all enjoyed this unit on the Iroquois and learned a great deal about the Native Americans.
revisionist distortions.......2006-01-17
I am fascinated by the cultures of the Iroquois, the Algonquins, and the other nations of New York State. Therefore, I can say with a reasonable amount of certainty that any well-read adult will note the many historical inaccuracies in this book. It paints a too-rosy picture of Iroquois life; indeed, they seem like the perfect people with a civilization far outstripping ours in their peacable ways. There are subtly misleading statements regarding religious toleration, women in government, and many other politicaly correct topics. And there was no mention of the continual wars waged by the Iroquois league upon all of the neighboring tribes - a huge omission.
I will point out only one particular error: on page 70, the book states: "There was no such thing as slavery." Unfortunately, the Iroquois were just as human as Europeans and the rest of mankind, and were well known middlemen in the slave trade between their eastern and western neighbors.
I have a great respect for the Iroquois and the other peoples that lived here before us. I don't think we are treating them respectfully by whitewashing their very humanity. Nor do I think we are treating our children respectfully by omitting certain unpleasant facts and prettying up others.
I gave this book more than one star because it did contain some useful information about food, clothing, and ceremonies.
If You Lived With The Iroquois.......2000-09-22
Ellen Levine and illustrator Shelly Hehenberger have created a delightful book that takes the young reader into a historical look at life as an Iroquois Indian. The eighty page book is divided into subtitles which concisely tell the story of daily living for the early Iroquois people. As the book is written in second person, the reader is drawn into the story and feels as if he or she is experiencing tribal life. The soft muted colors of the illustrations give the book a feeling of serenity while the writing covers an extraordinary amount of information for young readers.

The Lotus Book: The Complete History Of Lotus Cars (The Lotus Book)

Lotus Must Have.......2007-06-23
I loved this book ! Lots of great photos and most importaintly a good look at the me who made the machines. These guys working in sheds realy made Great Britain truly great. Just amazing what you can do if you keep at it. My only complaint is the sepia tone layout. I would have prefered sharper black and white reproduction. Just my old eyes I guess.
Highly recommended.......2007-02-20
Most histories of Lotus up to the period of the Mark 8 are based on Colin Chapman's own version, published in Motor Racing magazine in 1954, and Ian Smith's subsequent `official histories.' This new work by Peter Ross - who helped design the Lotus Eleven - is based on other inside viewpoints of how Lotus found its legs and positioned itself to make an impact in the racing world. Ross, Michael & Nigel Allen, and other surviving members of the `gang of volunteers' tell the sequence of events in their own words, resulting in the most interesting and insightful view yet into those years.
There is only a foreshadowing here of the ground-breaking Lotus Eleven, but the dynamic team that created it is at center stage. Chapman was the chief innovator, and we get close-up views--perhaps the first ever published--of his stunning Formula II design of 1952, the car that would have been the Lotus Mk 7 had it been finished. Also with the original design of the Mk 8 we see inner details of what may have been, when all is said and done, the most extraordinary racing `special' ever made. Chapman's inspiration, which attracted such talented people to help him, is undeniable.
But it was the others around Chapman who did most of the work. In these pages we enter a classic can-do story of people teaming up with little money, in hours stolen from their jobs and personal lives, for a sleep-deprived struggle to beat the rest of the world with a better idea. Their relentless pace carries us along as they design, build and test for race day, and some chapters in this book cannot be put down.
Ross, an engineer, Nigel Allen, a dentist, and others here all write in plain English, and the very logical narrative is refreshingly clear and easy to follow. There are many fine photos here too, some from private collections, and most will be new to the reader.
As usual, an exceptional product!.......2005-10-01
The folks at Coterie Press know Lotus like nobody else. I have used their books on several occasions for reference and the information can be trusted. Also, the layout is clean and well presented. This book extends the Lotus Legend and belongs in any car lover's library.

Container Plants: For Patios, Balconies, and Window Boxes
ASIN: 0764154133 |
Book Description
Approximately 290 color photos highlight this volume, which shows how to create a miniature garden on a balcony, terrace, or other confined space. A major ingredient for success is the assortment of proper plant containersurns, tubs, and flower boxes of various sizes to accommodate the needs of different plants. Clearly presented advice for novice gardeners places emphasis on beautyhow to achieve a harmony of blossoms and greenery. Readers learn how to plan a container garden by cultivating plants that blossom in successive months in a temperate climate. Such gardens retain their beauty through all but the few coldest months of each year. A plant directory describes approximately 100 varieties with color photos, thumbnail advice on cultivation, and months of the year when each plant blooms. Plants detailed here include roses and rhododendrons, fuchsia and oleander, dahlias and petunias, bougainvillea, and dozens more flowering varieties. Also in the directory are fruit trees that can be raised in tubs, ferns and shrubs for rich, green backgrounds, and even vegetables that can be cultivated successfully in containers. Each plant profile is supplemented with a set of pictograms that give information at a glance on watering, fertilizing, needed sunlight, and other details. Poisonous plants that are potentially dangerous to pets and kids are also labeled. Plants are listed by their popular names, followed by botanical designations. Full-color photos on every page.

Perfect for the not-so-green thumb!.......2003-06-13
I checked this out at the local library and liked it so well that now I'm ordering my own copy from Amazon. I had been wanting to spruce up my yard with some pretty plants, but the trouble is, I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to the how-to's of gardening. This book gives the basics for the beginner, plus it gives specific how-to's for tons of flowers, shrubs, herbs, ferns -- just about anything you can grow in containers. And it has full-color pictures of them all. I can't recommend this highly enough for novice gardeners interested in container gardening.

Customer Reviews:
"Fruity" mixed with good science.......2007-03-16
I didn't realize what people meant by refering to this book as "New Age" - basically the "Universe" is narrating the story and "dreams" of people and trees and planets. The timeline and discription of big bang and star life cycles is great - but I am uncomfortable with the "wishes" and "dreams" and "feelings" of a universe.
I was looking for an age appropriate book to explain the formation of the universe to my 5 year old - and it has captured his imagination. As an atheist trying to build a good basis of science over superstition, I felt that the narration was over the top, when the science is way cool and didn't need the whole dream/wish/creator overtones.
Rave Rave Rave.......2007-03-13
I have raved about this book to everyone I know. Actually there are two in the series. As a parent, it feels good to give my child lessons on how we are all cosmically connected. These books are stunningly beautiful, rich with meaning, truth, science and laced with spirituality.
Incredibly interesting to both reader and child.......2007-02-05
It takes a great deal of skill to reduce as complex a concept as the creation of the universe to a form a five year old child can understand. My grandson was captivated and asked many questions and I learned a few things also. We promptly read the second book in the series and have ordered the third.
Insanely Brilliant!.......2006-11-11
Jennifer Morgan is a brilliantly eccentric writer.
I read this book with my daughters when they were in kindergarten - I helped with the big words, of course, and with some of the scientific concepts. Morgan's unusual idea of introducing cosmology to young children by treating the origin and development of the universe as an autobiographical tale, narrated in first person by the Universe herself, actually works. The brilliantly colorful illustrations are a great complement to the text, and kids (and, I suspect, most adults) can acquire some serious knowledge while enjoying themselves by going through this book.
Most importantly, the book is startlingly accurate. It is all too tempting for children's authors to cut corners and present over-simplified half-truths when trying to explain serious science to young kids. Morgan avoids that trap.
I have a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Stanford, and I looked through the book carefully for any scientific errors.
I found none.
I do wish Morgan had discussed the "inflationary scenario," now generally favored by cosmologists, that suggests that the Big Bang was precipitated out of the frenetic expansion of a much larger super-universe. But, Morgan might reasonably object that the inflationary theory is still speculative, whereas the information she presents in this book is solidly established science.
Some parents might also object that treating the Universe as a person reeks too much of New Age nature-worship pantheism. Such a criticism would be unwarranted - Morgan, after all, knows that the Universe is not actually a human being, and even young readers should be able to see this as simply an engaging storytelling device. Any child who enjoys watching talking planes or a purple dinosaur on TV, while knowing that neither is real, can appreciate Morgan's narrative approach. This book should be of value to any family, regardless of religious or philosophical orientation, who possess a serious interest in science or nature.
The educational theorist Kieran Egan has argued that the best way to educate children is to center their education around grand stories. It is hard to imagine any story grander than the birth and development of the universe.
Our kids learn all sorts of stories in school and through popular culture. But too few of those stories serve one of the central needs of education - encouraging the student to transcend his own childish egocentrism and acquire a broader, transcendent perspective. To become an educated person, indeed to become a mature adult, requires such a perspective, but our society and our educational system too rarely nurture it, despite the fact that children are hungry for grand and exotic stories that transcend their own narrow lives.
It is all too easy to graduate even from a prestigious university in America with no comprehension of the stupendous discoveries human beings have made during the last hundred years concerning the nature of our universe.
That is horribly sad - we are depriving our children of grand and exciting truths.
Get "Born With a Bang" for your kids (or grandkids). It's a wonderful book. Jennifer Morgan did a great job.
From a cosmologist working in the field: this book is a *gem*.......2006-10-15
I'll preface this by saying that i'm an experimental cosmologist (working on weak gravitational lensing to determine galaxy cluster dark matter profiles) and have also worked in high energy particle physics, so i come at this book from a particular angle of having a fairly in-depth background of the subject matter.
Having said this, i want to *strongly applaud* this book, and would like to point out that of the several reviews given above, most are quite positive, and the only two highly negative ones are simply *missing the point* of the book -- it is *not* supposed to give anyone a detailed explanation of cosmology as we understand it scientifically today. there are plenty of other books to do that. rather -- this book is supposed to try to make some sense of what our current picture is in a much more organic, humane, emotional, spiritual, and yea, *cosmic* sense than most of the popular or scientific literature of cosmology out there today does.
For those familiar with Carl Sagan's work, and particularly "Cosmos" from the 1980's -- this is very much done in that vein, and i am pretty sure Carl would have heartily approved.
As a reader might gather from my words, i do *not* fit into the classical stereotype of scientist with a mechanistic, rational, Universe-as-clockwork type view that has been the primary paradigm in science since Cartesian times, but then, neither did Carl, and neither do more and more modern scientists. and Carl's manner of conveying science resonated with the public and inspired them likely more than *any* other modern physical scientist.
Further, i have thought deeply about the human aspects of science also in my journey along the scientific path, and it's clear to me that the paradigm one uses to describe whatever our scientific picture of the Universe and how it came into being and how it evolved up until today is, at any given time in human history, is critical in how we approach not only science, but every aspect of our lives, from our interactions with Nature, to how we treat non-human animals, to our picture of and dealings with others of our own species. when it comes down to it, how we picture the non-living aspects of our Universe and its whole history, *matters*, a lot.
And i love the way that J. Morgan and D. Andersen picture it in this book (and i also hope to communicate directly with them sometime). i love how they interpret and explain their understanding of everything from the Big Bang itself, and what came "before", to the limitations in our current picture of cosmology, to the specific aspects of BBN (Big Bang Nucleosynthesis), initial star formation, galaxy evolution, and supernova processes, leading ultimately to *us*.
No, this is not going to appeal to every scientist out there, nor every person -- but i would suggest this is from not a lack in the *book*, but from some measure of the imagination needed in our species and society to evolve to a more mature species in our wondrous Universe.
Also, the glossary, more detailed cosmic timeline history, book references, and quotes from working scientists in the back are also quite appreciated and helpful to point people in good directions for more in-depth understanding and further reading.
There could be much more said about many of these topics, but let me simply close by saying that i came across this book while dropping in on a sustainability conference of a local environmental group in my area, and the title intrigued me enough to start paging through it. and even after realizing it was a children's book, the flow of the words and the wonderful evocative paintings drew me in to continue reading it. and it is a *rare* book or paper on cosmology (and believe me, i have occasion to read a good number) that brings tears to my eyes with their beauty and power to stir the soul, as certain lines in this book did.

Purr-fect for any Emily or cat lover! .......2005-08-24
I got this address book as a gift for my birthday, I love this very much, here are the reasons why I love this book.
- it has thick pages so that they wont tear easily - hooray!
- there's a picture for each letter in the alphabet and the name of someone you know, for example - black birds - there's a picture of black birds and Emily.
- it's easy to carry
- it has a few pages for you to fill in and those pages say black thoughts at the top of each page
- once you've finished writing your family or friends number etc. there's 2 boxes, and you can tick one of them it says part of the posse, or part of the problem
- there's a line that says secret. You write down the secret that you know about that person.
- three pages of stickers - HOORAY!!!!!
but don't be fooled, each page has the same stickers.
So, if you get this book, get ready to be strange!
Now get strange, or get lost!
Emily The Strange, the stranger!
This black book is best!.......2004-07-20
I love this address book!
It's pretty thick but I love the size. It's small enough to fit into a medium size purse. It's also very well made, the cover is very sturdy, and the address pages are thicker than I expected. So you don't need to worry about them easily tearing from the spiral binding.
This book is full of cute details, address pages are black and red with lines for the name and address, spaces for two phone numbers, e-mail, and best of all a space for this persons "secret" in case you were thinking of calling them up to blackmail them for a favor. And boxes to check this person as "part of the posse" or "part of the problem".
Alphabet separators are thick, and fully illustrated, with cat eyes on one side and a reason why emily thinks "black is best" on the other. Add pages in back for "black thoughts" and three pages of Emily stickers and this address book is perfect!
I recommend it for any girl as gift, even if the person has no idea who Emiy is. This book is THAT cool.
Buy this.....OR ELSE!!.......2004-03-26

Post it!!.......2007-09-05
No matter how big technology gets, it will never replace the art and charm of a handwritten note.
So, you open your Amazon goodie box and out falls what looks like a notepad; half the size of A4 (it's the equivalent of writing 2 standard sized postcards), narrow ruled-Emily style of course: The lined side is white with some artwork on the periphery-a cat here, a scratch there, Emily's head, Emily's logo etc., The reverse side is red and black with space for addresses. There are 40 pages in total with 5 different designs (so 8 pages of each design).
So, you write on it (really small writing if you're like me and tend to write letters that can rival the War & Peace novel) tear out the page-which, btw, is conveniently scored in the right place so you don't have to guess where you should fold it; next, there are 3 gummed flaps to moisten (or glue, if you're again like me and have a licking issue), seal, then off to your local post office for stamp-age. The paper's very lightweight so it's inexpensive to post.
These are kind of novel and stylish looking and a pleasure to write on. So far I've used a gel pen and a ball pen on them with equal ease and I think they would take any kind of pen really (not a marker though or anything that might bleed through the other side...)
A radical idea! Other stationery please take note!
black mail rocks!!!!!.......2005-08-24
I love this black mail stationary set, all you need to do is write, lick, fold, stamp and nap! INstructions are on the back with cat showing you how to do it. Very cute, very simple instructions, just get your pen and stamp set, then do the instructions, me and my friend Ashley write Emily's morose code with this!
Now get strange or get lost!

Unconventional career guide for spiritual people.......2005-11-11
This slim volume gives a good overview of the different career opportunities in the alternative spiritual field. From complementary healthcare practitioner to psychic to paranormal investigator, many areas are covered. The most interesting part of the book are the interviews with individuals working in the varied fields. If you want to see what's possible for you, this book will be useful.
However, if you already have done your own research, either by talking to people involved in what you want to do or by training in your subject of interest, this book will be of little help. The resource section is somewhat useful but I think it could have been much more developed than it is.
Another interesting book for its metaphysical outlook and fabulous interviews with all kinds of "New Age" people would be "The Purpose of Your Life" by Carol Adrienne. Otherwise, any other book written on your specific subject of interest is excellent.
"Careers for New Agers" is good but I would recommend either getting it used or getting the Adobe Acrobat version, also available through Amazon.com
