Customer Reviews:
Helpful, but information not up to date.......2007-03-06
The book does what it intended to do - touches on highlights of Cancun and surrounding areas. So for that purpose it's good. However, note that it does not account for 2005's Hurricane Wilma, so information provided for hotels, beaches, restaurants, snorkeling/scuba is not updated. Many of these were destroyed so call ahead or check online blogs/reviews that are more updated.

Customer Reviews:
A must for travel in New Mexico.......2006-02-25
This book is 'only' a dictionary of place names in New Mexico. They are listed alphabetically, and I haven't found a place yet that isn't in the book. There is often a blurb about the local history in addition to the origin of the name. Short as the entries are, I find them fascinating. They even point out that Thoreau can be pronounced "Through."
Some people keep certain books in their bathrooms, this book rides around in the back seat of my car. I first saw it in the back seat of a friend's car, and knew immediately I needed a copy for my car. If you drive much in New Mexico, I suggest you get a copy for your back seat, too.
Absolutely, Yes, the "Best Book on New Mexico".......2005-09-23
For about for years now, since I first bought this book, this book has traveled with me everywhere I go in New Mexico. It's explained to me the names of towns I've lived in, towns I've passed through, and towns I've heard of for my entire life without ever knowing their meanings. It's introduced me to ghost towns and little towns I would never have known about otherwise. It's made me look at my own town with new eyes. Now I see an old water pump in front of a house, and I think, "That could have been placed here by Carl Webb's neighbors, back when he first built his sanitarium here." Before, I would have seen nothing.
The book does not, and could not really without being an encyclopedia, have everything you could ever want to know in it, but it has enough to make you sound just a little smarter when you're driving past exits and offramps on the interstate.
"The town once had six newspapers; it's just a gas station now...that town's residents hate how the town's name is spelled...that place once took the name of the town next to it...an Indian skirmish happened there...." And so on and so forth.
If you live in New Mexico, you should own this book. It will make you appreciate where you are much, much more--I can almost promise it.
Seriously flawed in its treatment of Native names.......2000-10-31
In reading through this rather well researched volume, I noted that the author will often note, at the end of an entry, that the place whose English or Spanish name has just been discussed, also has a name in Navajo (occasionally another language), a name whose meaning is given -- but we are not told the actual word! For example, the author tells us that the name for Albuquerque, in Navajo, means "two bells in place"; but he does not tell us that actual name, Bee'aldííl Dah Sinil.
In the preface, the author offers an explanation for this oddity:
"Regarding Indian place names, with but few exceptions I've presented their meanings but not their sounds; even the best transliterations do no more than approximate the actual sounds of the Indian words, and transliterations encourage the gross corruptions from which Indian names have suffered over the years. Persons who want to hear the sound of the Indian names should consult a native speaker."
This is really just stupid. One could similarly argue for the exclusion of all French words from etymologies in English dictionaries -- after all, French "transliterations" do no more than approximate the actual sounds of the French words. And anyway, if you write it down, someone will just mispronounce it. So, better to just ask a French person?
And this is particlarly silly considering this is from University of New Mexico Press, the same press that publishes the Young & Morgan lexicons of Navajo -- which, incidentally, have thorough coverages of placenames, which is of interest to anyone who, unlike this author, considers Native names the subject of scholarship.
Hopefully reason will prevail, and in some future edition, the Native names will actually be listed instead of merely hinted at.
Very good book!.......1999-01-30
I grew up in New Mexico, and since moving away, I have been very interested in learning more about my home state (probably because I miss it so much). This book is an excellent reference of place names, and taught me a lot about New Mexico. I highly recommend it!
The Bible for New Mexico Place Names.......1998-06-25
My roots are in Arizona and New Mexico and The Place Names of New Mexico is an outstanding reference work for those interested in place name origin and history. It is very enjoyable to read and simply browse through as well as a useful tool for research.
I obtained the book to assist in researching place names along the Santa Fe Railroad (obtained from old employee timetables) and it was here where I found that the author intentionally made a grave error, in my opinion. He omitted the names of railroad sidings, water stops, stations and section houses that "once were more important in the public consciousness" if they never had a post office or gave their name to another feature of the area.
I recognize there are many elements to consider in the history of the area such as post offices, maps, government and military records, etc. There should be no question that railroads also played a HUGE role in development of the west and leaving out some of the railroad names such as Keota, Blanchard, Paquita and McCune,a large void was unnecessarily created. While the void doesn't detract from the work as a whole, it does make it incomplete. Then again, in defense of the author, I didn't walk the mile in his shoes or confront the problems he may have faced. What I am trying to say is that if I wrote the book, I would not have knowingly excluded any railroad names.
On the positive side, this book is up to date and newer place names have been identified and included.
If you are interested in New Mexico history or various elements comprising it, this book is definitely worth having in your library. In spite of my complaint, it answered most of my questions. This book is a five star work and it is well done.

Customer Reviews:
A very handy reference for history-minded New Mexicans.......2005-10-01
First, buy Robert Julyan's "The Place Names of New Mexico." Then, if that book doesn't tell you all you need to know...well then you're probably clinically obsessed with New Mexico history. And that's okay. There are worse ailments, and this one's easily soothed by picking up a copy of "New Mexico Place Names: A Geographical Dictionary."
This book is very well organized, and it's interesting because it contains a lot of information that the other book doesn't. Plus, this book is much older, and so it writes from a perspective and a place in time that's very much changed today.
For instance, the other place names book tells a little about Cedar Crest, New Mexico being a former tuberculosis sanitarium. This one says it still is--and it gives details.
I agree with the other review currently posted about this book: get both place names books, and use them together. You'll learn a lot more that way, and sometimes it'll feel like piecing together a puzzle.
Great as a New Mexico reference.......2004-04-19
This is one of two books on NM place names. One isn't better than the other, but each has information the other doesn't. I'd recommend both as an interesting addition to your library if you're a New Mexican or just traveling through. It's good to have one in the car when you're driving the back roads, but if you live in Albuquerque and just find yourself scratching your head about why Las Lunas is named Las Lunas or what the Jornada del Muerto means and why, this is the book for you.

Book Description
Ten years before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock, settlers were already moving into the American Southwest, building houses, planning towns -- and laying out streets. The names of the streets of Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos reflect a long history of contrasting cultures: Spanish, Anglo, Native American.
Customer Reviews:
2.5 stars or so for a somewhat useful book that's hard to like.......2007-09-09
I hesitate to even review this book, because I don't know that its author should be encouraged.
Think about this. This guy lives in Lousiana, and he wrote a book about the street names of Albuquerque (and Santa Fe, and Taos), New Mexico. That, to me, is about one notch above collecting stamps, as far as obsessive, pointless hobbies go--researching and writing a book about the STREET NAMES of Albuquerque--the street names of a mid-sized city in a state that doesn't even border his own.
That's kind of odd.
Because, it's not as if the guy chose some fascinating subject that defies geography--no. No, he chose one of the most mundane New Mexico subjects that there even is--street names, most of them applied by developers.
Plus, its author really didn't do that complete of a job with it. I'd say, for every ten times I've looked up a name in here, I've found what I was looking for every five times or so. I have learned a few things from it, despite the author's questionable grasp of the state's geography, but it's partial at best, and not at all comprehensive.
I admit this book is the only reference on this subject that I know of, but overall it's disappointing. Part of that disappointment is because many explanations for the street names are just boring--a large majority of them seems to have been named by developers for no especially interesting reason. THAT, of course, he couldn't really help, except he could at least have been witty about it. Or someone else could have. But part of the disappointment could be because the author lives in another state and seems to have come here for only two months to put this together. And part of it could be the cover, which I could never really get past.
The cover: holy cow, this book has maybe the worst cover I have ever seen. I realize the author was in a tough situation with his wife claiming to be an artist and all, and perhaps rejecting her hideous drawing of three Native Americans as his cover art would have resulted in the author sleeping on the couch for a while, but it is just awful. Crotch-kickingly awful. Eye-gougingly ugly. A celebration of cleft pallette, botched plastic surgery, bad art, and Southwestern stereotypes--the sort of image that's so bad it casts a filthy pall over any reading experience that follows viewing it and makes an objective review of the thing nearly impossible.
This book, I think, is a good example of the sort of thing that can result from rushing in to cash in on something. Gill is the author of STORIES BEHIND NEW ORLEANS PLACE NAMES, and evidently his publisher, Bonus Books, Inc., thought he could do something similar for a place he wasn't from, didn't live in, and wasn't about to take the time to learn much more about.
Ahh.... The book is not without merits, since its acknowledgements imply that a number of knowledgeable locals were invited to contribute what they knew, and, again, it is probably the only book on the subject, and probably an unfortunate necessity for local historians wanting to cover all their bases.
And, whatever, it'll probably teach you a few things---it's "a treasury of stories...extremely informative" according to the Slidell-Sentry News (that titan of journalism), but still, I wish it was better.
Sort of Interesting.......2005-02-19
This book did give some interesting history about how the street names originated. It would have been more interesting if perhaps the book could have contained photos of Albuquerque. It also would have been a better read if they perhaps incorporated the history of local landmarks, nevertheless, it was neat to learn the origin of some of the street names in Albuquerque.

Most people don't realize that their pets are sophisticated mind readers, according to author Richard Webster in Is Your Pet Psychic?. Clairvoyant communication is, in fact, a legitimate way to increase understanding between pets and owners, claims Webster, who offers specific exercises to enhance interspecies connection. For instance, choose a time when neither of you is tired, and by all means avoid mealtimes when any pet is single-minded. Communication might begin with loving stroking and then wander into telepathic questions, such as "What do you want?" The trick is to be receptive to your pet's messages, either through body language or images in your mind. Webster addresses all creatures great and small, from canines to horses to goldfish, even "ghost animals" that are deceased. He also offers useful advice for helping lost pets find their way home. For skeptics, this book will be over the top, especially with tips such as, "Ask your guardian angel for help at any time when you are dealing with animals." But those who want to build a new form of communication with pets will find this a useful primer. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
You probably know about some of the amazing feats regularly accomplished by animals, from salmon who navigate through hundreds of miles of water to their birthplace to spawn, to bloodhounds who can track the tiniest trace of a scent with noses one million times stronger than ours.

Part collection of amazing animal stories, part psychic manual, Is Your Pet Psychic? is your guide to understanding and developing your pet's psychic powers.
Read extraordinary tales of animal heroes, animal ghosts, and moreDiscover how you can test your pet's psychic abilitiesLearn how to communicate telepathically with your pet
The exercises in this book will help you and your pet develop the natural psychic potential inherent within all living things. As you experiment with them you will explore one of the true wonders of nature, and strengthen the special bond you share with your pet.
Customer Reviews:
To Much History.......2006-08-10
This book was good and all but Mr. Webster put way to many animal stories and history than he does physic tests with your pets. There is like 15 pages of stories and 1 1/2 pages of pet physic tests. I wouldn't recommend This Book to someone who is serious about being a Pet Physic like I am.
This book connects you and your pet........2005-07-29
It was good to find this book. It seems kind of weird but when you look at it from a soul point of view, psychic communication is very real between living beings that have an affinity together, including humans and pets. Personally I think it is divinty that is in all creatures that provides the gateway to communication.
Anyway, I reccomend this book to truely "commune with nature".
They Laughed When I Said He'd Come Back, But When He Did..........2002-06-18
This book was highly entertaining to read. I must admit, I was *quite* skeptical of some of the suggestions in the book. However, my in-laws lost their dog about 2 weeks ago and I convinced them to try out Webster's tips for when your pet goes astray.
Sure enough, a few hours later, using his techniques, their dog came back. Now, I know that sounds crazy. Even they ribbed me about it saying it was a coincidence. Maybe so. But I am very glad to have read the book, regardless. I found it very helpful.
Skeptics will always be skeptics. That's understandable. It's very hard to admit when you are wrong. For those animal lovers out there, you don't need proof. Animal lovers will thoroughly enjoy this book and will find it very helpful indeed!

Book Description
Iron seemed to be suitable for everything - from railway lines to steam kettles, jewellery and furniture. Beds, chairs, tables, benches and small items of furniture made of cast-iron, the most modern and versatile material of its time, were available due to its durability and low price.
The art-historical development of cast-iron furniture has long been neglected and this book offers a systematic illustrated record of the many diverse forms featuring two major names: Karl Friedrich Schinkel of Germany and Christopher Dresser of the United Kingdom.
With over 460 types of iron furniture presented among 160 pages of illustrations, Georg Himmelheber provides furniture experts and dealers, designers and collectors with the first complete and international survey of this very popular furniture. This book is also an important contribution to the cultural history of the 19th century.

Customer Reviews:
A text book with pretty pictures..........2001-11-14
If you are a hard core orchid breeder then this book might be right up your alley... but, if your are interested in orchids for other casual reasons this title might be too technical to enjoy. I just read through the first chapter: "The Discovery of Vandas and Their Introduction to the West." Sounds like there could be great tales of early botanical exploration and adventure... it is nothing but a long list of botanists' names, dates and enough latin to choke a Roman... page after page littered with itlalics and brackets and parenthesis. Yuch! Sure, the pictures are pretty, but they're all on glossy paper in the middle of the book, so any hope of helping the reader with a well placed illustration is lost. The book is jam packed with information and facts about culture, breeding and botany. But, be forwarned that the text, written by a Phd., reads like a reaserch dissertation.
A extraordinary book for the beginner vandaceous grower.......2000-08-23
This is a extraordinary book for anyone who is starting to grow vandaceous. It will teach you tricks that you will not find in any other book.Everyone that buys this book is lucky enough to be able to share the many many years that Martin Motes has adquired since he first started growing orchids.
A great reference to use for breeding Vanda.......1999-07-05
This is a great reference to use for breeding and cultivating Vanda, good photographs and very well written.
Excellent Vanda Orchid resource book.......1999-04-14
The author, Martin Motes, is an expert in Vanda culture and propagation. The book is very well written and contains high quality photographs of Vanda species and hybrids. Anyone interested in Vandaceous orchids, whether beginner or advanced, will thoroughly enjoy this book.
Excellent Reference For Orchid Lovers.......1998-12-23
This is an incredible book for beginners as well as seasoned orchid growers. It does a wonderful job of covering the botany, history, and culture. The author has done an incredible job of keeping your interest. It can also be used as a quick reference. When I first purchased the book I did so to trouble shoot an ailing vanda. I was able to diagnose and cure the problem in a couple of weeks. After reading the book I realized there is so much interesting history relating to vandas. This book has given me great insite into the potential of these beautiful orchids. I have many orchid books but this is by far my most appreciated and useful reference. The photographs are breath taking. This book will help anyone successfully grow vandas.
