    4 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2006-08-02

After seeing the one-star review after my purchase, I was afraid I'd made a mistake, for I bought the book as a gift for someone and several weeks later another for myself out of curiosity. But I disagree having received my copy. I grew up in San Antonio and studied at UT-Austin. So, I'm acquainted with both towns as well as the Hill Country. Although I've yet to delve into it, the author seems to have done her homework and knows the ins and outs, the places to go, the eateries and so on. I would recommend this.

1 out of 5 stars Sometimes Less is More.......2006-07-17

The Lonely Planet guide books typically provide an indispensable resource for an eager traveler ready to explore. Unfortunately LP's Austin, San Antonio and Hill Country handbook falls flat, offering little more than the occasional groan. This reference rides on empty and awkwardly over explains basic information to the point of abstraction. For instance, fruit cobbler was described as a, "pudding-like pastry dessert that resembles smashed pie". The whole book is written in such a tone. The text does not flow and is full of pointless jargon that simply fills out line. One could compare this guide to an empanada, flakey and full of filler.

4 out of 5 stars Good Historical Nonfiction.......2007-03-30

Ellis Island was the main immigration port for the United States from the 1890s to the 1910s. This children's book outlines the process for immigrants coming to America: where they left from, the journey, arriving at Ellis Island and following procedures, and what they did after they left the Island. The book structure follows a question and answer structure, answering good questions like what the immigrants brought with them, how their names may have been changed, and what happened if they didn't speak English. It also shows the perspective of the immigration agents, which was especially interesting to me- to process the amount of people they had coming in, they gave a "six-second medical exam" to determine for any contagious diseases and mental defects. The books also talks about some agents who would let people slip by with a kind smile and good wishes. The illustrations seem dated, and the book would really come to life with better renderings, but it's interesting to see the view of New York coming from across the Atlantic, and to see the Grand Hall where immigrants split up to go either into New York or for quarantine. The amount of information and text make this book more appropriate for an older child, but would be perfect as research for a project on immigration or family history. [...]

5 out of 5 stars Brings back an almost forgotten era.......2004-05-29

When my niece (from L.A.) first came to New York, she was seven years old. I took her to the rehabilitated Ellis Island, and she was (for a seven year old) fascinated to learn that her great grandparents along with millions of other immigrants had stepped across that pier and became Americans. For Christmas, I sent her this brilliant book.

"If Your Name Was Changed at Ellis Island" by Ellen Levine answered many of the questions that I could not. She sent me back a glowing thank you note, and told me her teacher loved her book report on this book. Eventually, I picked up the book for myself. Guess what? For many first-, second- or third-generation Americans this book answers a lot of questions from that nearly forgotten era, and of that generation of people who helped America as they helped themselves. This is a great testimony to Ms. Levine and illustrator Wayne Parmenter to their well-planned book.

          Book Description

Shoe Fleur: A Footwear Fantasy debuts an outrageous imaginary collection of botanical shoes and accessories created by photographer and artist Michel Tcherevkoff. Each virtual shoe and handbag is amazingly crafted out of numerous photographs of a single plant or flower. The result is both organic and cutting edge. Art, attitude, romance, and nature combine in this garden of flirtatious footwear presented here in fashion's latest avant-guarde offering. Bearing witty and whimsical names and captions to compliment their playful design, every shoe and handbag has a story to tell--or a secret to keep. Fashionistas will find everything they need, from the "Pre-Nup," a slipper made from the virginal white lily, to the "Miss Tress," the sole of adult discretion, to the "Tally Ho," a handbag fit for a fox hunt, to the "Frieda Kahlo," a feminine shoe with a sturdy soul--built for the road less traveled.

This playful one-of-a-kind collection is packaged in a chic pink plastic slipcase with a round peek-a-boo window, and includes eight printed vellum tip-in sheets. Whether you're shoe obsessed, fashion forward, or flower powered, Shoe Fleur is an irresistable confection that will tease, delight, and perhaps inspire a few fantasies of your own...

Michel Tcherevkoff has created a masterpiece that is a botanical flight of imagination. His creations are hypnotic; a journey into a fanciful floral wonderland. This book has become a source of refuge when I need to retreat from daily stress; I can easily change my attitude after spending a few minutes within the pages of this tour de force. Thank you Mr. Tcherevkoff for the unlimited hours of enjoyment I will receive from this gem.

This book was not all that helpful to me. I needed some ideas to balance my busy life/job with my new dog. It is a nice looking book with some cute dog pictures. It provides some basic information for how to care for a dog, not really geared towards busy people.

This book was a dissapointment. If you have never owned a dog, it might be ok. I was expecting a little more on training. There wasn't even a section that really went into any detail on housetraining.

                      Book Description

This volume deals with the architectural history of the theatre in Roman Palestine and Provincia Arabia, a region which comprised a Jewish, Nabataean, and Hellenized population but lacked any tradition of classical theatre. The earliest examples, erected by Herod, were actually a foreign imposition upon the landscape of Judaea, while the theatres built in the Nabataean kingdom provided no more than an architectural setting for activities which were often unrelated to theatre in the accepted sense. When the Hellenized cities in the region began building their theatres, classical plays were already disappearing from the stage throughout the Roman world, their place taken by lighter, less select forms of public entertainment. The author then offers a comprehensive architectural analysis of each of the thirty theatres so far uncovered in the area. Richly illustrated, it provides a vivid reconstruction of a world which, though long gone, continues to fascinate.

Read the book, but also take time to research what has been going on while she has been on watch as the Harris County ME. I wouldn't say that her management skills are something that would inspire me.

Inner strength is something that gets us through our darkest hours and days, and faith is at the core of this strength. In Dr. Joye M. Carter's autobiography "My Strength Comes from Within" she shows how her inner strength and faith led her to achieving her goals. Dr. Carter is the first black female to become a Chief Medical Examiner in the United States. She first held this position in Washington , D.C. and is presently employed as the Chief Medical Examiner for Harris County, Texas.

Dr. Carter details the very rough road that she had to take to gain the title of Chief Medical Examiner. Growing up and throughout her schooling when she told others that she wanted to be a forensic pathologist, they ridiculed her or told her that she would never be able to do it. Fortunately Dr. Carter realized that it really did not matter what other people said or thought, what mattered is that she believed in herself and God, and with these beliefs anything is possible.

Dr. Carter's job as a Medical Examiner exposes her to death on a daily basis, in her career she has seen the results of what has happened to people when they hit her examining table. Even though her patients are dead, she takes her time with them and she treats them with respect and dignity. Dr. Carter's strong faith guides her through her job daily.

"My Strength Comes from Within" is a very positive and inspiring book. It gives the reader inspiration and a guide to achieving his or her dreams or goals. The only real issue that I had with the book is that several words and phrases seemed too be overused. A good example would be Dr. Carter's title of Chief Medical Examiner, it is basically on every page of the book and I felt that was a little much. Otherwise I enjoyed the book and gave it a RAW rating of 3.5.

I was able to secure an advanced copy of this wonderful book. I read it cover to cover. I advise anyone with teenage children who may be having a hard time figuring out their place in this world, to buy this book.

Dr.Carter's book is enlightening and positive. The book shows you that no matter what you want to accomplish in this world, it is possible if you only put your mind to it.

Don't ever let someone tell you that you can't accomplish something, because you can!
