Helpful, informative, but a little lacking..........2007-08-24

I bought this book from Fodor's because I really needed information on Southern CA in addition to the parks. I basically got overall general information regarding the parks/restaurants and small tidbits about some of the close by attractions. I guess I am used to reading "the Unofficial Guide" products which will just spell it out for you the good, the bad and the ugly.... Some of the info in this book could've been taken straight from a Disney brochure.

I have not gone to Disneyland since buying this book, bu can say, from a recent trip, 3 years ago, this is excellent advice, and great reading. It actually gets you excited for a trip to Disneyland, or other southern California destination. The book includes Knott's Berry Farm, Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, and light advice on San Diego, and other closer destinations, to Disneyland.

I haven't been this excited to visit Disneyland, since I was a kid, and now I have two to share it with.

Thanks to the writers of this fine book. Thank you, thank you thank you!!!

This book is a must for those traveling to theme parks with children, especially Disneyland. My family and I just spent three days at Disneyland and California Adventure and boy am I glad I read this book! I got a lot of neat information and tips from this book. It's easy to read and helps you plan before you even step foot into the park. Lots of info on rides, where to stay, where to eat, shows, etc. If you have small children, read this book before you take off for your trip.

This book is written with love, warmth and humor. I sometimes laughed, sometimes cried, but always realized the author's love of horses and her dedication to end horse slaughter. May God bless her for the work she's doing for all equine!

This book is a "must read" for all animal lovers, and especially horse lovers. The author's warm style and insight into the minds of animals will draw you in and never let you go! I have always been concerned about animals welfare. Especially cats. When I heard about Carol's book - I was only slightly interested. Boy!!! did I change my mind. I tried to read most of it on lunch hours but geeish... my eyes got red all the time-keep your Kleenex handy. Her style of writing puts you right there with the horse and feeling what he feels. It is extremely touching.

I promise you that whether you have ever owned a horse (I have not) or rode a horse (I have only once) -- you WILL feel differently about them after this book. You will want to run and hug each and every one you see.

It is easy reading - fun and touching. Interesting and joyful.
I recommend it for all ages -- adults and children. This is a must have book!!!!! Give to your friends and relatives -- maybe we can all make a difference in horses lives and they in ours.

I've been interested in herbs and herbal gardens for years. Many books explain the uses for the herbs, but less have the fantastic garden layouts and detailed instructions for growing the herbs. Medicinal herbs are a great thing to use, I grew up using them. I just wasn't quite sure how to go about choosing which herbs, planting, etc. I'm not a gardener. It is perfect for those of us who know about the herbs (though it does give you many interesting recipes and details of the usage, as well), but want the practicalities as well.

This practical guide to growing healthful herbs includes 20 specific plans for such things as cold and flu gardens, healthy heart, windowsill medicine cabinet, skin care, first aid, hair care, relaxation garden, and lots more. Recipes - culinary as well as medicinal - are included with each garden type.

The book begins with an overview of medicinal herbs, with their uses, cautions, and raising and harvesting advice. The "at a glance" box directs the reader to the gardens (always multiple) the plant is used in, so you can see what complements it and how the plant is used.

Tables include specific plant care and propagation advice and uses in the garden for attracting and repelling bugs. Byers includes the basics on getting started, garden maintenance and harvesting, but the heart of this book is practical herb use. Byers even concludes with an appreciative and practical chapter on the wild herbs, otherwise known as weeds.

Wonderful and Helpful.......2002-05-08

I own this, though I havn't actually used it yet.
It is very well organzied and includes lots of information about many herbs and where they grow. It also includes information about how to make different teas, salves, ointments etc.
The only thing I didn't like about it was the garden section seemed wasted. The recipies in the section seem wonderful, but I don't think it was really necessary for the author to draw out garden plans for "tummy ache help" and "healthy heart garden" among others.

Letter From an Empty Valley is comprised of essays, but the lyrical title hints at the poetry within the prose. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, not only for its subject matter, but also especially for the author's writing style. Mr. Yale has a finely tuned sensibility toward differing cultures and is able to convey the subtlest nuances with sharp insight and wit. Emotions roil as you share details of daily habits - lives - ill served by the charge toward technology.

From the supplier: The proposed change in House Rules to require a three-fifths majority approval of legislation to raise income taxes should be abandoned. Such a supermajority requirement is against the original intentions of the Framers of the Constitution, as is demonstrated by arguments in 'The Federalist' numbers 58 and 22. The structure and language of the Constitution and congressional practice also fail to support such a measure. The rule change would warrant judicial intervention in House affairs that have up to now been managed through self-restraint.

Too Many Discrepancies..........2004-04-25

My Mother grew up in the same town and neighborhood as the author, an area I am also familiar with myself. I can tell you firsthand there are numerous fabrications throughout this book. For example, she claims no one had a piano in the neighborhood, except for herself and another one of the girls. However, there was a piano at my Mom's house, as well as some of the others. Neither was she the first black female to attend Texas A&M, in College Station, TX. My Mother, along with several others, attended before she did. As a matter of fact, my Mom attended there for the first time in the summer of 1966- the author was still in high school at the time. While reading it, we spotted numerous discrepancies, which I am sure are deliberate, instead of accidental. Her facts are out of order, which make her writings misleading to the reader, and her book inaccurate. The author should have avoided using an autobiographical approach to her book. Had she not done this, or told the complete truth instead, she would have a better book. However, she chose not to do so, which prevents it from being the book it could have been.

Wonderful peek at recent history.......2003-03-29

I used to read Sunny Nash's column in the Bryan-College Station Eagle. It was my favorite part of that paper and I was saddened when she left. Bigmama Didn't Shop at Woolworth's is an amazing look back at what for some Americans -- either for our age or our background -- is an unknown history.

A change of perspective and a great read in one book........1998-10-09

Every White person in America should read this book! Sunny Nash writes the story of her childhood without preaching or ranting but she made me realize for the first time just how much skin color changes how one experiences the world. When she was just three years old her grandmother taught her how to read 'colored' and 'white only' because that was a survival skill just as important as 'Don't get in a car with strangers.' The book is remarkable. I was taught, and I teach, that skin color doesn't matter any more than hair color. But, if your skin color is brown, it matters a great deal to a great number of people. I needed to learn that, Sunny Nash is a great teacher.
