DeLorme Michigan Atlas and Gazetteer.......2007-07-28

I have been using DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteers for many states for many years. I have always found them very useful for travelling over the back roads and secondary highways as they give one detail not found on the usual road maps. They also list parks, historic sites, recreaton areas, etc. which are also very valuable when travelling in unfamiliar areas.

While I also own a GPS system for my automobile, it doesn't give you topographic detail or large area views due to the limitatons of the small GPS screen. However, I find using both the DeLorme Maps and the GPS system to make for very efficient trip planning.

The maps in this atlas are clear and up-to-date. You'll find it hard to get lost, but easy to discover interesting new sights and sites.

It's also much cheaper than your average GPS!

delorme gazetteer series.......2006-03-07

the delorme gazeteer series is perfect for people who want to wander off of the main roads. my wife and i like to point the car as whim sees fit. the map has backroads with enought detail to let us find our wish and our way back. essential for indirect travel. also has marked 4wd trails to unknown wonders, as well as a smattering of known wonders (waterfalls, museums, fishing, camping...). not a replacement for usgs quads, but will make the travel to your hike more fun. if you are interested in exploring a state, or some portion thereof, the gazetteer series is an invaluable tool.

Michigan Atlas and Gazetteer.......2005-08-26

We previously owned the Minnesota version of this Atlas. Recently we bought the Michigan version and found it very helpful on a trip to the UP of Michigan. The great detail in the maps helps find the small things the state maps leave out.

Don't believe the B.S........2000-06-01

Exploring the U.P. and northern lower Michigan has become a weekend tradition for myself and my friends over the past year or two, and since picking up a copy of this book, our DeLorme Atlas has become dogeared from all the use it has gotten. There is simply no better map in existence unless you have access to USGS maps (and those aren't very portable). With this atlas and a GPS you could be knocked out and dropped anywhere in Michigan, and when you came to, you could find your way out. Even without a GPS it is an incredible resource. This is, quite simply, THE definitive Michigan atlas. Accept no substitute.

I'm sorry to see some of my fellow Michiganders give this gazetteer a poor review, because I think it is excellent. My mother has a fear of driving on the interstate highways, so she's getting a copy for Christmas. And imagine how much better your vacations could be if you took to the back roads!

Not accurate for the north.......1999-04-08

This book is good for the southern half of the lower penninsula, but it is lacking in the Northern half from what I have found. I too have discovered that it shows roads where there are none, doesn't show roads that are there, and quite frequently (probably 30%) has the wrong road name. Don't venture into Norther Michigan and depend on this map or you'll end up in the middle of a National forest lost with out a reliable map to get you out. However, it is usually accurate in regards to highways and most main county roads.

Although the books detail looks impressive, when you get onto the small back roads, where you really need detailed information, the maps too many times are not reliable and not accurate. They show roads where none exist, roads that do exist are not on the map, road names are often wrong, and all sorts of other innaccuracies.

This is better than a collection of county maps! The state is divided up into sections and you can easily follow a road or trail across the whole state! Highly recommended for "taking the long way home"!

This book is not good as a learning tool, it only gives 1 or 2 words of translation per page.

I bought this book because it purported to define the "tough" words. I found that most of the defined words were ones I already knew, while a large number of the "tough" words went unnoticed. For instance: on the first page, "puissant" is defined, while "palefreniers" is not; page one of chapter 6 has 9 words defined (most were cognates) but no clue is given as to what the "auto-da-fe" mentioned on the same page might be. I could go on, but you get the picture. I would still read the book, but would recommend that one keep one's Larousse handy as the obscure vocabulary is hefty. I would not buy this edition for the vocab list as advertised; however, the unused space on the left side could be used by readers to add their own definitions.

Great book, the vocabulary builder is usefull.......2007-03-20

I liked this vocabulary builder idea more than the dual language books.

When reading the dual language books, i find myself reading every line translated, this one, even i if don't completely understand everything
it is much more fun to read. and you get to learn the important words that you don't know cause on other side there is like a small dicto for more difficult words.

also the book is very interesting.

The traditional furniture of Korea represents one of the great woodworking and design heritages of Asia and the world. Particularly in the last quarter century, Korean chests and furniture pieces have been highly prized by antique collectors and interior decorators everywhere. These objects' simplicity, vigor, strength, dignity, and, above all, their elegance allow them to harmonize with an amazing range of room styles and interior designs. The counterpoint of wood grain and metal-work makes them objects that capture attention and delight the eye.

Yet, mysteriously, though old Korean chests are widely owned both in North America and Europe and are available on the Oriental antique market, they are often wrongly attributed to China, or their Korean origin is otherwise ignored. Further, authentic, old pieces are now rare in Korea itself. Reproduction pieces--both well-crafted ones and those simply slapped together--are made in quantity today.

Considering the size of the Korean peninsula, the quantity and variety of traditional furniture and chest types is astonishing, especially in light of the fact that most extant antique pieces date from only the last century. Styles vary from pieces with delicate wood inlay, shell inlay in lacquer, and opulent carving, to folk pieces cheerfully displaying flaws, knot holes, and tool marks. Variations on a type are seemingly endless: with the exception of pairs of wedding boxes, one wonders if Korean woodworkers ever made two identical pieces.

Though there has long been a need for a clear guide to the intricacies of this marvelous furniture, this is the first systematic survey of Korean furniture in any language. The 152 plates depict a wide variety of objects of the highest quality, artless folk as well as flamboyant aristocratic pieces, and set a standard for appreciation and evaluation. The 106 figures illustrate the research of the authors into traditional Korean houses and lifestyles as well as woods, joinery, metal fittings, and woodworker's tools. 142 designs all in black and white. Most are too small and busy for goldwork embroidery although some are fine if enlarged. Each design has details of origin and date and what purpose it was used for.

Disappointing.......2002-08-11

I anticipated that a book published by Purdue Univ. and by vet school faculty would be useful. Perhaps some day I'll find it will be.

The illustrations are colorful and well done. But these are the topics covered -- HOW TO: restrain a dog, muzzle, examine the eye, bandage an upright ear, bandage a floppy ear, bandage a foot, bandage a lower leg, bandage a tail.

There is a brief section on medical emergencies. However, saying "Always have injuries examined by a veterinarian" is neither sufficient or particularly helpful advice. For poisoning, it recommends "veterinary advice should be sought" and also gives the National Animal Poison Control Center phone number.

I thought the section on the care of your dog in disasters (e.g., hurricanes, evacuations, etc.) was helpful. It also gives the name and numbers of various vet schools which specialize in particular conditions (skin, eye, nutrition, teeth, surgery, etc.) which could be helpful. As also was a section in which you can list the spoken and body language commands you use with your dog.

But I found Bruce Fogle's "First Aid for Dogs: what to do when emergencies happen" to be many magnitudes more useful and practical.

Easy to use reference for first aid and emergency planning.......1999-02-04

This is an excellent step-by-step first aid and disaster planning guide for your dog. The instructions are easy to follow, and are paired with full color drawings which beautifully illustrate each of the steps in a procedure. The technical artwork alone makes the book worth having. Though originating from the needs of Canine Search and Rescue Teams as noted in the Introduction, it is a practical guide for all dog owners who may need to provide medical assistance to their dog in an emergency situation or a disaster. It is not a replacement for qualified veterinary care, but rather a guide to preparing an injured dog so that it can be safely transported to a veterinarian without further harm. There are sections on the care of dogs in disasters, where to find speciality medical help, checklists for supplies and a first aid kit, and a place to record your dog's vital signs and obedience commands. The entire book is straight forward (what to do and how to do it) and VERY easy to read - you don't have to wade through pages of text to get to the points. I recommend this book for anyone whose dog may become injured under conditions where veterinary services are not readily available, and for all responsible pet owners who are preparing themselves and their families to be prepared should a disaster strike their home or their community.

This book is by noted California landscape artist Nancy Goslee Power, with wonderful photos by Mick Hale and has already become a classic refernece. But it's also just gorgeous and fun to read. Shows a range of gardens from mission times to modern day and you can see the trends, the classics, and plenty to stir your imagination and make you want to either get in the garden or make travel plans.

Exile As Found

Ollie Harrington's life and career intersected with notable as well as infamous African-Americans of his generation, among them Langston Hughes, Paul Robeson, Richard Wright, Walter White, Adam Clayton Powell, Beauford Delaney, Howard Cousins, Chester Himes, and James Baldwin. Variously described as a raconteur par excellence, acerbic critic of U.S. domestic and international policy, a man gifted with extraordinary wit, insight, and the genius with which to represent them through his art, Harrington's own life and career has yet to be adequately explored and interpreted. M. Thomas Inge's compilation of nine of Harrington's essays is a cautious step in that direction. Published one year after "Dark Laughter: The Satiric Art of Oliver W. Harrington," Inge as editor of both volumes fails to fully flesh out the complex man behind both art and words.

Fortunately, this is of little consequence. Harrington's essays speak eloquently enough for themselves. Additionally, both the first of these essays, "The Last Days of Richard Wright," as well as the profound friendship Harrington and Richard Wright shared are sensitively contextualized and elucidated in a perceptive "Introduction" by Julia Wright, Richard Wright's eldest daughter. Harrington's controversial essay, first published in Ebony magazine in 1961, continues to raise questions surrounding the peculiar circumstances of Richard Wright's death. Through it, we are brought into the frighteningly dangerous, alienated, oftentimes paranoid world of the expatriate-- a world further problematized by the politics of race, both American and international, and the personal and professional rivalries within the Parisian Black expatriate community that continuously threatened its fragile makeup. Overall, Harrington's essays are mimetic, faithfully, yet ironically recording a world both treacherous and absurd; where perfidy poignantly gives way to satire and laughter; where ultimately, one is left to muse what it means to be "Black," as well as an "American" without a country-- in fact, an exile, twice over.

One senses that Harrington's narration and dramatization of the verisimilitudes of historical events, from topical pieces such as the birth of his best-known character, "Brother Bootsie," ruminations on his career in the U.S. and Europe, to personal reflections on his relationships with luminaries Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, and Paul Robeson, come from a deep sense of moral outrage over how much the United States lost and continues to loose given what W.E.B. du Bois defined as the central problem of the twentieth century. It is high time that Harrington, a major political wit and witness of the last century receives the attention that eluded him during his own lifetime.
