Great For the Roaming Visitor.......2006-05-17

This encyclopedic guide to low-budget travel in the United Kingdom will have a broad appeal to students, backpackers, hitchhikers, and your average working-class Anglophile. It has guides to hostels and hotels so you have a roof over your head, restaurants and pubs so you never get hungry or run dry, sights you can see while you're in town, and even ideas for volunteering you can do and short-term jobs you can use to finance your peregrinations.

And perhaps most important, it recognizes that its target audience isn't exactly rolling in dough. There are pointers on where you can get a good meal for five pounds, and the book gauges the value of hostel rooms. The writers direct you to where you can find theatre tickets on the cheap, and they inform you of which airlines will get you from London to Edinburgh or Cardiff for ten quid. Though the editors discourage hitching, they offer pointers on how to find cheap, high-quality tours by bus, train, bicycle, and even shouldering your pack and walking.

Not so long ago, the instructions in this book would have been the exclusive territory of hairy bohemians and college students on holiday. But these days, when it's not all that notable to see backpackers on self-guided tours well into their fifties and sixties, this book will be handy for a broad and diverse constituency that wants to see the UK on a thin budget.

Most large cities have maps in this book. The maps are of the downtown and the visitor-oriented areas, of course--the whole of London gets a map hit, for instance, but if you're trying to find your way around the Bayswater neighborhood, you'll need to buy the Michelin map. But because the maps point out the best accomodations, sights, and pubs, they are just what you need when you're planning your itinerary. And if you need to buy a second map, what the heck, they're not that expensive.

This book covers the whole of the UK, including Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, and just to round out the interest of the world traveler, it dips down into the Irish Republic to touch on Dublin. And therein lies its greatest problem. Like most encyclopedic texts, this one has to touch on each subject very fleetingly. If you intend to see the whole UK, or even a section of if, this is your book. If you intend to focus on London, this publisher has a better book for you. And if you want to see Glasgow or Liverpool on a budget? Well, there must be books for you.

Still, from planning what you want to see on your trip to deciding how to get there and how to make your way around the country, this is a good book. It can help you both before and during your travel, and it recognizes the fact that you're making your way on a shoestring. Chances are, unless you're independently rich or on an expense account, this is the book you need, the best book you can come up with, and the one that will answer any question you might have.

Let's Go 2006 Britain.......2006-03-10

I'm going to Britain this summer for a few weeks. I have read through this book and found it very informative. This book is perfect for college students and travelers in their 20's. It gives the traveler ideas of what to do in Britain when you have a limited supply of money. Overall it is a great buy for the young traveler.

Provides Great Information .......2007-07-11

I bought this book on a whim because I absorb tons of useless information. However, this book is a guide to guide to explaining a lot of everyday things we encounter; what they mean, determined, or why. I learned how to actually decipher my electric bill, or that fish inspection is voluntary (unlike other meats) and is not regulated by the USDA. This book is extremely useful in explaining everyday numbers that we are so accustomed to seeing! Great read and definitely something to keep around as a reference tool!

Best book for the Budgie pet bird -- or parakeet............2005-01-02

Julie Rach's BUDGIE is an informative and useful guide for the care and preservation of your new Budgie pet, and probably the only book you will need for Budgie pet care. Rach has included a short history of this little Australian parrot including a discussion of the variants bred in England and America. Budgies in the wild come in a few colors, but the colors of the varieties are numerous. Apparently, Budgies are like popcorn, its hard to have only one, so if you are thinking of building an aviary full of Budgies, get THE PROPER CARE OF BUDGIES -- a more comprehensive book than Rach's --- that includes a more in-depth discussion of genetics and breeding.

Rach offers much practical information on the caging, feeding and care of "pet" budgies, including a few medical tricks, such as how to give your bird an oral medicine. Speaking of the photographs (there is one showing a Budgie receiving medication from an oral syringe), many were produced by Renee Stockdale, whose photos show up in other books on Budgies and Parakeets. Although Rach says Budgies should be housed in cages with bar spacing 7/16" or less, I noticed the same cage with bars ½" apart are shown in many of the photos, so either the photo editor was careless or Rach did not edit the book.

I enjoyed reading the text and looking at the photos, and recommend this book as the one you will need unless you are becoming a breeder. The photos( taken in 1997) appear in other books on this topic, but Rach has covered all the bases for most Budgie owners.

A helpful guide.......2004-12-19

This guide to budgies was published in 1997. Its author is Julie Rach. It totals 126 pages. There are ten chapters. Numerous color photos are contained--they are helpful. Also, informative sidebars are included. Examples of topics covered are the budgie's ancestry, budgie selection, care, cage selection, toys for the budgie, feeding, grooming, health, feathers, senses, teaching the budgie how to talk, and taming the budgie. No information on breeding is provided. A page is set aside to demonstrate--with a color illustration and lines pointing to the corresponding anatomical parts--the external features of the budgie, which is useful. This guide to budgies is recommendable.

The perfect budgie book for newbies.......2003-01-18

I can't think of a better, more accessible book for first time budgie (parakeet) owners. In 123 pages, Rach, a former editor of BIRD TALK, covers a wide range of topics, from the history of the budgie as a pet to teaching it to talk. She covers health problems and how to prevent them, proper nutrition, cage size, taming a new bird, and grooming. The section on parakeet behavior was, for me, the most entertaining, as Rach describes the gestures and habits common to most budgies and what each means. The color photographs scattered throughout are mostly unneccessary, but they break up the text. (Most people aren't interested in seeing a person covering a cage.) The pictures of budgies themselves are worth it, however, especially since most people reading the book will already be enamored of this acrobatic pet.

Well-seasoned budgie owners and breeders won't find much new here, but newcomers to bird ownership will be delighted. Even if you are only thinking of purchasing a bird, read this book to understand what will be required of you to give a new parakeet a safe and healthy home.

This book covers Budgie basics,and just the basics. I was left feeling like I only had about half of the information that I needed to know.

The good news is that it is very easy to read, however if you're only buying one budgie book, I suggest picking one with a bit more substance.

A great book for all budgie lovers.......2001-01-09

This is a very detailed little book with plenty of info on parakeet care. It guides the reader from bird purchase to pet care, even to the death of your pet. Great layout and great pictures. It will also make a great gift for children who keep budgies as pets.

Good Book But Price Guide Is Outdated.......2001-02-04

This book contains an excellent history of football cards. Anyone collecting football cards should own a copy of this book. However, ignore the price guide at the back of the book. The book is several years old and the price guide is outdated. Do not expect to buy the cards listed in the price guide for those prices. Otherwise, an excellent history book of football cards.

A good book about the civil rights movement in Mississippi.......1999-08-16

This book gives one a good idea about what the SNCC had to endure during the 1960's. Specifically the Summer Project in 1964 is addressed. I enjoyed reading the book. Finished it in one day. What I miss, however, is what impact the changes in the civil rights status for blacks in Mississippi had on the psychy of the white community. What happened to the racist ideology? How did those people deal with the changes that were finally implemented in the state of Mississippi?
