An indispensible guide to plan your trip to the Sea of Abaco. Great Charts, Directions, Suggestions. You name it, it's got it. Although, I am geographically-challenged, I had no problem trolling the waters of the Sea of Abaco for a week thanks to the Abaco Guide.

Stephen P Has Been There and Done It.......2001-10-26

I have cruised the Bahamas aboard all kinds of small boats for over 30 years, and I wouldn't go without Stephen P's books. There have been many Bahamas cruising guides written but many fall far short of the complete story.
Stephen P. has spent many years in the Bahamas. His guide info is virtually faultless. His charts are the best and amazingly accurate. This is not always the case with other guides. His stories and "local knowlege" is historic. He spends countless hundreds of hours on sight to obtain the information needed to produce a really good guide. He is an active ham radio operator so you can talk to him anytime and discuss his works.

My daughter was captivated by this book from we got it. She read it from cover to cover and continues to share fascinating bits of information that she has learned from it. Definitely held her interest and she was even able to peek her younger brother's curiosity about the children in the book.

an illustrated history of childhood.......2002-12-27

This is how history should be taught to children -- colorful, informative, relevant. Within the framework of 16 two-page spreads about kids from different times and places, the authors present a good deal of historical information. This is the kind of book that will help young readers determine what is the same about being human and what changes over time and distance, and may well spark an interest in a particular period or history in general.

The book begins with a world map placing the sixteen children who will be featured, and then each child is shown (in chronological order) with a short paragraph of autobiographical text. Typical pages show the layout of a house, toys, school, and a miscellany of topics interesting to other children such as play, health, transportation, cooking or music. The emphasis is on colorful illustration and graphic depictions. Periods covered are Egypt 1200 BC, Athens 500 BC, China 150 BC, Rome AD 120, Norway AD 950, Mali, West Africa 1400, Spain 1450, Florence 1490, Mexico 1500, India 1600, Japan 1650, Australia 1700, France 1789, England 1840, Plains Indians 1850 and the United States 1920.

The book finishes with a short discussion of archaeology and history, a simplified timeline and a glossary.

This is another beautiful book from Dorling Kindersley, and a worthwhile introduction/supplement to your child's history lessons.

A Visual Tour Through History.......2001-05-05

If you sometimes wonder about how children lived in the past, this book shows 16 children living in their time in history. The illustrations are detailed, fill the pages and are accompanied by a text explanation.

On page 24 we find Giovanna living in Renaissance Italy in 1490. The text tells of how she sits for a portrait and how her mother is a fine singer. Giovanna's favorite possessions, like a printed storybook, a pendant and jewelry box are shown. They are pictures of real items from the Renaissance.

The first colorful page shows all the children standing on a map of the world. The following pages show the lives of children growing up in Egypt, Greece, China, the Roman Empire, Viking Norway, Mali Empire, a Spanish Castle, Renaissance Italy, Aztec Mexico, Moghul India, Tokugawa Japan, an Australian Desert, France, Industrial Britain, the American Plains, and 1920s America.

A fun Timeline puts the book in perspective and a glossary explains words like Aboriginal, Castle, Legionaries, Samuri, Shogun, Tea ceremony and Fjord.

Children will see the pictures, learn about the life of a child and discover how their life is so different today. This book was produced after consulting history experts and offers a fresh approach to history for young readers. The authors have degrees in history and education. Together they have written over 25 books for children on a wide range of subjects.

If you want to mix a little history in with your bedtime story experience,this book is charming beyond words. The premise is simple: seeing how a mouse family lived 100 years ago. The illustrations make the book come to life and you can talk about life in the old days, contrasting the book's pictures with today's pace and lifestyle. Great treat for both children and adults. Companion book: City Mouse House is just as terrific and together they make a wonderful way to explore cultural differences. They are a must buy for your family library!

Comprehensive, easy to read, good excercises.......1999-09-10

A great teaching or learning manual for PageMaker! I used this text teaching DTP and PM at a community college. It is well illustrated and has step-by-step instructions. Each lesson has labs that, if completed, will make you proficient in PM. The only drawback to the book is the changes to PM6.5. While the supplement covers the changes, some of the excercises cannot be completed as directed because they do not account for the changes. (for instance, the grid manager in PM6.5 is set up differently). PM6.5 Plus (newest release) has some additional features (such as a tool bar) that may require an additional supplement but can be figured out easily enough until it's available. Overall, a good, comprehensive book for beginners or intermediates.

Written by a German academic, More Than a Champion is an odd gem, a thin volume with a solid jab. Using the almost mythic confrontation of Ali and Joe Frazier in Manila as his centerpiece, Jan Philipp Reemtsma bobs and weaves through the champ's life and career to establish a thesis that goes the distance: that Ali, both in and out of the ring, was ultimately a prisoner of the majestic boxing style he created for himself. Though at times Reemtsma seems a little punch-drunk on his own erudition, he is a precise interpreter of boxing's essence, and an imaginative analyst of its most poetic practitioner.

From one of Europe's most prominent intellectuals: a brilliant, utterly original study of the boxing style of Muhammad Ali; of his rise, ascendancy, and fall as champion of the world; and of how Ali the man came to reflect many of our own deep, often disturbing, cultural patterns.

This virtuoso essay takes as its narrative framework the legendary Ali vs. Joe Frazier fight in Manila in 1975, which Jan Philipp Reemtsma follows in three-round sections. Intercut with these vivid and telling accounts of what actually is going on (as opposed to what merely appears to be) are much wider ranging sections exploring the choreography (it is not too grand a word) that Ali crafted for his greatest title bouts, how he created a style that became its own myth, how he then came to have to act that style in the ring, and its damaging consequences.

Reemtsma also provides portraits of Ali's opponents: Sonny Liston, George Foreman, Ken Norton, and, above all, Joe Frazier, the strongest "big puncher" of them all. He even produces a startling analysis of Sylvester Stallone's five Rocky movies to show how closely linked they are with the changing mythology of Ali, then opens up that myth so that we see how Ali the man and what he represents are connected with our own lives.

Good, but not good enough.......1999-10-28

I've read parts of this book and it held my interest simply because the subject is interesting. But there is nothing in there that I've not read, known or heard before about Ali. The author makes a conclusion of Ali's style on the basis of just one fight, even if that fight is -- to quote Ali himself -- his "greatest". It is also too short, about 200 pages in paperback and contains very few photos of its larger-than-life subject. So what if Ali created a style that he had to maintain as part of his identity before us his fans and the rest of society? That is not a very original or striking psychological observation.
