Customer Reviews:
yawn yawn yawn.......2007-03-17
My local bookstore had very limited guides for Georgia and Savannah so I bought this on the fly. Wish I'd leafed through it more. While I'm sure the book is fine for fairly conservative, middle-aged or elderly travelers, I knew I'd made a huge mistake when I read the strange ethnography of attending a drag show by Lady Chablis. It was as if they had no clue drag shows existed or that one might attend one and leave -- entertained.
Since Chablis has become one of the city's leading attractions (due to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) and she is a VERY talented performer, it's great that they included her show in the list of things to do while in Savannah. But the sort of shocked tone came through in other ways. I didn't trust the restaurant sugggestions or anything else.
While this is certainly one sort of inside look at Savannah, there's a hipper, funkier Savannah they are unaware of or unwilling to acknowledge.
Great Savannah Guide.......2005-05-10
I am planning to relocate to Savannah in a few months and purchased this book to familiarize myself with the town. I chose the Insiders' Guide because it was written by two long time locals, and I enjoyed the writing style. I am very impressed with this book, it has given me information on everything from real estate and utilites to restaurants and shopping. I did not read the section on Hilton Head, so I cannot really vouch for the information there. I feel like I have a firm grasp on the history, customs, social scene, physical geography, where to eat, shop, avoid, etc. - all from this guide. Well organized, well written and definately worth every penny!
Book Description
Everyone agrees that it is possible to learn to speak Japanese in a reasonable amount of time, but no one has ever said that about reading and writing it. It is widely held that spoken and written Japanese require separate efforts by the student, as if these two aspects were in fact distinct
languages.
A first step toward alleviating this situation was taken by Yasuko Mitamura in 1985 with the publication of Let's Learn Hiragana and Let's Learn Katakana, which continue to help thousands of students every year to master these two forms of Japanese script. Now, Let's Learn Kanji goes to the heart of
the problem: the learning of kanji (i.e., Chinese characters as they are used in Japan).
Not simply a brilliant exposition but also a workbook, it teaches the student how to write the basic strokes, how to put these together into full-fledged kanji, and how kanji function in the context of example sentences. Progress is continually checked, and the student is encouraged through quizzes
and exercises. The result: 250 fundamental characters learned almost painlessly.
Customer Reviews:
Its very good, but something is wrong. .......2007-06-27
I truly love this authors work, but my biggest problem is that they use romanji. If a person is keen on tackling kanji, they should at least master kana first. I akin that to someone learning the electric slide before they even know how to walk. other than that it is an awesome book.
Everything Isn't For Everybody..........2006-04-27
...but this book is working for me!
A little background so you understand why I rate this book 5 stars:
I have a decent handle on Japanese grammar and aural comprehension, making steady progress every week. The remaining challenge was progressing in Kanji. However, every source I checked indicated that the rote memorization of Kanji was unavoidable. I tried some of the mnemonic techniques but that approach seemed to add more work, with marginal results. You can follow the stroke order etc, but the details start to blur after a while if it seems like you are just drawing random pictures. Alas, learning Kanji seemed like it was going to be a long hard slog.
Fortunately, I'm really good at take low level details and using induction to put the details into a larger context. Lo and behold along comes Let's Learn Kanji! The genius of this book(I've searched for others that are similar in approach but no luck there) is that it teaches about the fundamental Kanji radicals and how they can aggregate and combine into more complicated Kanji. Since I learned the Kana fairly quickly, this felt like learning new Kana(even though it isn't) because the shapes were not as complicated from jump and I could get comfortable with how they were actually contstucted with correct stroke order and stroke type. Now, when I read my grammar books, with the kanzi, okurigana and romazi translations, I can see the radicals present within the Kanji. The Kanji then start making sense, given that the radicals have already been described. The correlation with the radicals isn't 100% but there is enough for me to make consistent progress without feeling overwelmed. Discovering this book was energizing. Be forewarned, that it will still take time to go through all of the material. However, in a relative sense, I think of it as short term (mild) pain, for long term gain. This approach is not for everyone. But for those who like to understand low level details(radicals) so they can fit it into a larger picture(Kanji). I highly recommend it.
Great, if you're determined & don't need immediate results.......2005-12-07
This book is clear, systematic, and comprehensive. It includes excellent information about kanji aesthetics and stroke formation/order. I have no doubt that it would lay an excellent foundation for learning kanji IF YOU FINISH IT.
My problem with it is you have to slog through 85 pages of radicals (that is A LOT of work) before you write your 1st real kanji. That doesn't work for me. It provides very little reward in the beginning and I lost motivation. Also, I am living in Japan and didn't want to wait months before beginning on real kanji. I want it now. I'm not in it for the long haul. So I bought Basic Kanji Book instead. It's nothing out of the ordinary, but it got me learning real kanji that I can use right away, and it has kept me at it.
Good but not for beginners........2003-12-24
I agree with the previous authors, that it's a very helpful and thorough book that gives you loads of opportunity to see the kanji in context and to practise writing it.
However, this is not a book for beginners, despite the very friendly name! I got demotivated because of the lack of reward of learning radical after radical but having little Japanese to attach it to.
Now that I know 3-400 kanji, I can see the value of the book.
BEAUTIFUL!.......2003-09-27
I have been writing Japanese for years, and I started with the author's "Let's Learn Hiragana" and "Let's Learn Katakana." I loved both books, especially the Hiragana. I learned Kanji from various sources, spent hundreds of dollars on books (literally), yet none of them were as beautifully written as this one. If you want to learn the characters in depth, and want to really enjoy writing them (yes, it is artistic and even fun to do) and not just be flabbergasted and frustrated, this is the book to start with (or even switch over to). I might get this book just to improve my handwriting!

The low-maintenance gardens presented in this gorgeous tome span a wide range of climates, cultural influences, and natural landscapes. Brookes, one of Britain's preeminent landscape designers, is careful to point out that he's no purist: his approach is "to mix introduced species with the wild ... I prefer this approach--as opposed to one that is totally true to nature and creates an ecologically correct plant association for a given area--because it gives me more flexibility." But even plant purists will be attracted to the flowing forms of Brookes' gardens, divided here by climate. His plans are simple and easy to read, and directions are given for the ponds, gravel plantings, and pathways that give certain of his landscapes a clean, inviting look. It's a great browsing book, with valuable design insights on every page, and an overarching sense of the romance of nature.
Book Description
John Brookes, one of the world's most influential garden designers, is leading a quiet revolution, and he is encouraging you to join in. In Natural Landscapes, high maintenance borders and manicured lawns give way to a host of more natural plantings and decorative treatments. Inspired by a series of fascinating garden case histories, John Brookes explores ways to combine native vegetation and materials with exotic plans and show how to produce spectacular effects in keeping with your locale. Brookes also provides indispensable practical advice on how to work in harmony with nature at every stage of your garden's development, from the basic design and selection of materials for hard features, to choosing and positioning plan communities, and introducing garden art. Just as John Brookes set the standard for garden design books in the early 1980s with The Garden Book, his Natural Landscapes is the trend-setting title for landscape enthusiasts old and new.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-04-03
I purchase a lot of interior design books -- two from this publisher simultaneously. The photographic quality of this book is no different from the other one -- less than desirable. While the book is printed on nice paper and the cover is attractive, many of the pictures inside are out of focus, outdated, and very few of the rooms are "fresh" and inspiring. Most of the photographs, if not all, are from local showcase houses from the 1990's. I frequent many showcase houses in Georgia and have seem many rooms that are truly inspired and looked beautiful and designed by top notch interior designers. These authors missed the mark. The title does not do this book justice. I think the title should have been "Out of date and late in Georgia" or "My high school art project". At best, this was a very disappointing purchase.
Beautiful Photography of Beautiful Rooms.......2006-06-08
When you think of 'Spectacular Homes' you tend to think of LA or New York, maybe Aspen or some place like that. You don't think of Georgia, or at least I don't.
This book shows that I should think more about other places. And to be sure, Atlanta is home to some large companies (Coke for instance) that have produced wealthy families. So why not Atlanta.
This book showcases the work of nearly fifty designers that have produced homes easily worth picturing. As one of these architects says, 'what's right is whatever the client wants.' And the homes shown here vary from ultra modern to Gone With The Wind traditional, from formal to casual. Above all else, the rooms shown are 'Spectacular.'
The book is on interior design, so it does not show the exterior of the house and its settings. The rooms may be in the houses of the designer, they may be of clients. The designer picked the house and the room to show off their work. The photography is excellent, including some very tricky views where the sun coming from outside would tend to confuse the camera. After that it was beautifully printed, on high quality paper to show off the photographs.
A good idea book, a good coffee table book.

Book Description
This is a compelling story about the life of a "Black Southern Belle." The story takes place in the present time, but resembles much of an untold past. A mystical, riveting, heart-touching story that will capture and leave an unmoveable "stain" in the heart of the reader.
