Customer Reviews:
Let's Go France 2006.......2006-11-04
Excellant travel guide for tourists. The guide provides detailed information, which is helpful prior to and upon our arrival to France. Greats series of books; Let's Go!
Just got back had to write a review.......2006-07-10
My wife and I are 26 and 25 and neither of us had been to France before. We went with a very tight budget about $1,000 for two weeks. Let's Go was awesome, we followed their advice to bike ride out of Dijon, it was incredible! We got to do a wine tasting at a former castle and the vineyards were picturesque.
Then we went to Grenoble, the music on the solstice was wild. Seems like everyone in that town has a band and they were all playing until about 3 AM. We then followed their trial up one of the alps above the city. We brought a picnic purchased in the market that morning and that was very satisfying.
From Grenoble we went to Avingon, the hotel they recommended was cool and so was the Pope's palace but we found the city heavily touristed and that was sort of jarring. We went to the Fountain de Vecluce and did end up having a great time (we took the books advice and rented a kayak to travel down the river to Isle de la sugur -spelled wrong-) that was a lot of fun. But the Fountain itself was very disappointing the book did not make clear that it dies down and escapes through cracks below the pool and does not overflow except in the spring. That was also very heavily touristed.
Paris, well Paris was awesome. We had both the let's go guide and the book "Paris on $90 dollars a day". Both were great but the Paris specific guide was obviously rather more detailed. It was also neat because it suggested itineraries based on how many days you had in the city (we had 4).
To sum up. The trip would not have been nearly so good if we hadn't had Let's Go or had instead say, Lonely Planet. Thanks for all your help Let's Go and keep up the good work!
Book Description
History explodes in this activity guide spanning the turmoil preceding secession, the first shots fired at Fort Sumter, the fierce battles on land and sea, and finally the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. Making butternut dye for a Rebel uniform, learning drills and signals with flags, decoding wigwag, baking hardtack, reenacting battles, and making a medicine kit bring this pivotal period in our nation’s history to life. Fascinating sidebars tell of slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad, the adventures of nine-year-old drummer boy Johnny Clem, animal mascots who traveled with the troops, and friendships between enemies. The resource section includes short biographies of important figures from both sides of the war, listings of Civil War sites across the country, pertinent websites, glossary, and an index.
Customer Reviews:
Activites are very good.......2007-05-19
This book is typical of people who do not understand the Civil War was not about Slavery. It was made into a war about slavery to keep European countries from recognizing the South. If that would have happened there would be a CSA today. There is a lot of history in this book that is very good, but it has the tendency of beliefs that are not true. The activities in this bood are most excellent and we have done some of them. These are actually as they could have been.
Wonderful Gift for Children.......2007-03-17
I got this for some friends of the family, and they absolutely loved it, especially the activities. They are reenactors, like myself, so that may be part of why they enjoyed it.
Educational and fun.......2007-01-11
There are some great little activites in this book to help kids think about civil war times. Nice pictures.
Great Book.......2006-02-01
I teach fourth grade and my students loved this book. I used it while teaching a unit on the Civil War. The students were enthralled. I found them asking me for the book during their free time!!!
Civil War made real for kids in special education.......2005-09-12
I recently used this book with my students who have both learning disabilities and emotional disturbances. I used it in conjuction with the state mandated US History book. I found the extra information I was able to inteject into my lectures to be interesting. My students enjoyed the extra tidbits. They gathered around the book to look at the 9 year-old soldier. They wrote letters as if they were soldiers with the ink they made from the book's recipe. I think it helped to enrich the Civil War lessons I had planned. I recommend this book to other teachers. With a little tweaking, I think that the activities are appropriate for students in elementary school as well as in high school.
Book Description
The heroic struggles of the thousands of slaves who sought freedom through the Underground Railroad are vividly portrayed in this powerful activity book, as are the abolitionists, free blacks, and former slaves who helped them along the way. The text includes 80 compelling firsthand narratives from escaped slaves and abolitionists and 30 biographies of "passengers," "conductors," and "stationmasters," such as Harriet Tubman, William Still, and Levi and Catherine Coffin. Interactive activities that teach readers how to navigate by the North Star, write and decode a secret message, and build a simple lantern bring the period to life. A time line, reading list, glossary, and listing of web sites for further exploration complete this activity book. The Underground Railroad for Kids is an inspiring story of brave people compelled to act in the face of injustice, risking their livelihoods, their families, and their lives in the name of freedom.

Very interesting.......2007-07-29
This book has a lot of scientific data and an analytical feel to it. The writter put a lot of thought into this book and provided a lot of information not found in most aquarium books. She focuses on low tech tanks which is nice for those of us that don't have a lot of money to invest in equipment but want the look of a planted tank. I recommend this book to anyone that has a low tech tank or is interested in a different perspective on planted tanks.
Practical, yet scientific........2007-03-13
This book can be useful to the layman and has the depth for the pro.
The author clearly knows her subject and has the technical expertise. The biology and chemistry is over my head (it has been a loooong time since taking those classes), but it is actually readable. Some items simply have to be taken on faith if you haven't got the background to fully comprehend everything. In other words, one does not have to understand 'redox equations' to get the content.
I haven't tried her methods yet, but I am intrigued. It goes against most of my library, but she makes a lot of sense.
Other options.......2007-02-21
First of all, I gave "Ecology ..." 4 stars rather 5 as my feeling is that a "Practical Manual" might offer some options in terms of an author's preference. And, being a "Manual," it may also present "Trouble shooting" type of pointers, or "How to find your way back if a different path was selected." I believe the above are areas that could have been addressed in better fashion. However, that said, "Ecology..." is really an excellent source. D. Walstad tackles subjects with both the scientific base as well as personal experience. At times, the scientific base is (for may tastes and background) a little too involved. But, sprinkled throughout, we have questions with answers. I really liked that. I also liked her chapter that basically dealt with "This has worked for me...." The author dispels some myths in terms of natural sunlight and carbon supplementation that generally runs against current trends. What I thought might be improved:
1) A chapter devoted to, "How to rectify a situation without a total breakdown of the aquarium."
2) Options to "Plotting soil"(gardening soil)in the substrate. For those of us who don't feel confident in running off to Wal-Mart for our substrate.
3. More information on filtration; I'm a little skeptical in terms of the plants "Can do it all."
But, compared to the other book also purchased, "Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants," I very much like the author stating in clear terms "This has worked for me." With "Encyclopedia," you need dig to find this information.
GOOD BOOK IF .......2007-02-14
A GOOD BOOK IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE LINGO - I DID NOT. THE BOOK WAS WAY TO TECHNICAL FOR MY POOR BRAIN. I TRIED TO READ IT BUT JUST COULD NOT. I ORDERED THE BOOK BY MISTAKE (AGAIN MY POOR BRAIN). SENT IT BACK AND WAS GIVEN A RAPID REFUND IN ACCORDANCE WITH AMAZON POLICY. I HAVE NO QUARLS ABOUT PAYING THE SHIPPING AND APPRECIATE THE ABILITY TO RETURN AM ITEM WHEN THE ONLY REASON I RECEIVED IT WAS THROUGH MY ERROR. I GIVE THE BOOK AND AMAZON 5 STARS AND MY SELF 1. IF YOU ARE REAL SMART BUY THE BOOK BUT IF YOU ARE JUST "PURTY" SMART LOOK ELSEWHERE.
THANK YOU AMAZON!!!!

This author really knows her stuff!.......2005-11-15
I highly recommend this book because it says it how it is!
Read this book and suddenly nearly all of your queries about freshwater aquarium ecology will be answered! From how aquatic plants purify water to caring for aquatic plants without using elaborate expensive equipment. Although, I am one to think that if people want their plants to flourish and have stable pH and alkalinity levels in their aquarium, they will need to invest in carbon dioxide fertilising with a solenoid valve to allow CO2 to flow when only the lights are on, providing all other growth factors are adequate (like lighting and nutrients).

Mego Toys.......2004-01-03
This book has alot of detailed color photos and is a good quick reference book to walk around with at flea markets, toy shows and garage sales. Its a great book for new collectors and dealers. The book has color photos of most but not all of Mego's action figures and dolls that Mego made. But i found that the book was worth the money.
Not the Best out there.......2002-11-28
A very early book, it could have prospered from more research and a better selection of photos.
Most of the shots are from Mego catalogs themselves which doesn't give you an idea of packaging.
But, if you're just getting into the hobby then it's not a bad starting point either.
Has some nice pictures, lacks content........1999-04-13
I didn't enjoy this book as much as Mego Action Figure Toys with Prices by John Bonavita. I bought this book thinking that it would have some larger pictures of the little mego guys. It did but there aren't that many pictures or conttent
Book Description
Renowned horticulturist Don Hastings and his son Chris present step-by-step instructions for year-round care of lawns, gardens, flowers, and houseplants from Virginia to Texas.
Customer Reviews:
The Perfect Gardening Book.......2004-05-03
I have a small collection of general audience books, and I was looking for one tailored to my neck of the woods. I have only owned a home for two years, so keeping up a yard was new to me. I had gardened in the past at my parent's but never been in charge of it all (lawn, trees, shrubs, mulch, flowers, etc.). This book makes it all seem so easy! My yard is looking better in the six months I've been reading this book, and I have no doubt that it will be spectacular next spring thanks to the Hastings' wise book layout!
Mostly good, but a few problems.......2004-03-15
Yes, it's a good schedule. However, the writing is kind of folksy. I tire of his personal examples; doesn't he know anyone else who gardens? More illustrations or photographs would help, too. Overall, it's a good book, but certainly not a comprehensive guide to gardening.
Extremely Helpful!.......2003-02-10
This is EXACTLY the book I've needed for years and didn't know about! I'm so glad to have found it. Now I know exactly when to do all my gardening tasks and HOW to do them! This book includes great month by month instructions on what a Southern gardener should be doing. It also includes fabulous instructions on how to do many tasks [like pruning!] that I really had no good idea how to do correctly.
I love gardening and I'm so happy to have this book - I'm finding it exceptionally useful! This book is money well spent!
You'll use this book constantly. Not just for Georgians!.......2001-04-25
I own an embarrassingly large number of gardening books, some of them quite wonderful. But this one has quickly become my favorite, for many reasons. In it, the experience and wisdom of Don Hastings have been paired with the insights of his son, Chris, who realized that the month-by-month format would be a godsend for many gardeners, especially younger ones who are overwhelmed by books that take an encyclopedic approach. The photographs are superb (finally, I am able to recognize some of the common pests in my garden!). The advice, which is understandable and pleasant to read without being simplistic, is as useful for Northern Virginians like me as it is for those in the deep south. But I think my favorite thing about Don and Chris Hastings' book is the same thing I appreciate about my favorite cookbooks: rather than merely telling you what to do, they tell you WHY you are doing it, and explain the reasons behind each piece of advice. By sharing their understanding in this way, they help the reader to become a knowledgeable gardener rather than simply a memorizer and follower of instructions. (Plus, the book turns gardening into a year-round pleasure, rather than something you look forward to beginning in March!)
Don't Need to Be a Plant Expert!.......2001-03-27
Although I very much enjoy books that simply educate me about certain plants, I am not able to remember all I need to know in a regular, timely fashion. This book, with its month to month format, overcomes that by reminding me to weed-n-feed my lawn, prune my summer flowering shrubs, plant bare root roses, and spray my fruit trees -- all in one chapter entitled, "March"! Also, great reading and pictures! Along with my Southern Living Garden Problem Solver book, I don't need any other gardening books!
