A 'must have' Field Guide for those going to Africa........2007-05-07

Isabelle Young has compiled a "packing worthy" field guide for individual health care as well as diagnosing and treating illness/disease peculiar to the African continent. I was amazed this guide carries approximately 400 pages of easy to read and understand descriptions of common and not so common maladies discussing prevention,diagnosis, treatment and whether you need to leave to get lifesaving treatment. I would commend this guide for individual travelers and those leading tour groups or short term medical mission groups. I was so impressed that I purchased a guid for each of the physicians and nurses that I led on a short term medical mission experience in Sierra Leone. Perhaps the best news is the price for the guide!

Good overview of health risks, preventions measures.......2006-12-08

I used this on a recent trip to Africa. It was most valuable in the preparation stage of my trip when figuring out what to bring and what shots were needed to enter certain countries (some of this is now outdated). It has really good maps of where Malaria, Yellow Fever, etc are located on the continent and a good, if also outdated, discussion of anti-malarial drugs.
I wouldn't use this as a medical book during any trip, but it's a great primer that gives an overview of all the wonderful parasites and diseases in the region.

Bottom line: Gives a really good idea of how to prevent and prepare for getting sick in Africa. Buy it a few months before your trip so you can start getting shots.

My family and I recently returned from a trip to Africa. We traveled with our two small children and had a wonderful time. This book was wonderful in leading us to beautiful destinations. Our trip would not have been the same without it. My husband is an army officer and had brought along his own guidebooks he obtained through the service. This is the one we relied on the most.

A Must Purchase For Travelers To Africa.......2000-04-28

If you are planning to travel anywhere in Africa, especially Sub-Saharan Africa this small, handy book is a must. With the number of infectious diseases prevelant in Africa it is foolish to take unneccessary risks, but most people are probably not familiar with the health risks and options open to them. This book contains comprehensive information on what do to before you go, how to stay healthy, and what to do when you get back. It also has a substantial list of symptoms, diseases and treatments just in case you do get sick (or injured from outdoor activities). It works for outdoor adventurer's, resort go-ers, and urban-only businessmen. Plus its minature size makes it convenient to carry.

While I appreciate having a coloring book that highlights black folk, the font for the captions is too small. I have a four-year old and I was looking for something tailored more towards his age group.

Great African Americans by Taylor Oughton.......2000-05-21

Teachers are always searching for something interesting to use for Black History Month. This is it! Writers, doctors, artists, educators, politicians, sports figures, inventors and many more can be found in this interesting coloring book. Under each sketch is a paragraph telling about the individual. My students will enjoy these next September.

No bigger than this book is, it is a great source of information on large cats. Complimented very well with fantastic photography by Tom Brakefield. Gives general home ranges with maps of these beautiful cats' countries. One of the few books that is accurate as to their habits. And has a very nice reference list in the back of the book. In case this interests anyone.

Comprehensive overview of horticultural therapy.......2007-01-04

This is a valuable and comprehensive introduction to the use of gardening and other related activities to promote health and well-being, among a range of different clients, including children and young people, older people and those experiencing physical disabilities. While the introductory chapters provide a valuable and succinct overview of the theories that underpin this growing profession, some of the later chapters on specific client groups are less satisfying and would benefit from updating at some point in the near future.

The Manuale Tipografico of Giambattista Bodoni has been called the greatest type specimen book ever printed. Issued posthumously in 1818 at Parma by Bodoni's devoted widow Margherita, the two-volume work contains a dazzling array of 142 roman alphabets with corresponding italics, numerous script and exotic typefaces, and a striking collection of flowers and ornaments--all beautifully printed on crisp, handmade paper. These typefaces and decorative materials were the culmination of more than forty years of assiduous devotion by Bodoni to the typographic arts, both in his capacity as printer to the Duke of Parma and as proprietor of his own private press and type foundry. Only 250 copies of this specimen book were printed, and surviving examples are now highly prized by collectors.

The true value of the Manuale lies not in the fact that it is a splendidly printed and rare book, or even that it summarizes the life's work of a celebrated type designer and printer who blithely sailed through some of the most tumultuous times in European history. Rather, its real significance is that from its pages speak the first successful modern types--more evolved, refined, and logical than those of Baskerville, yet not so chillingly formal and clinical as the letterforms of Bodoni's great French rival Didot. Though Bodoni rarely made his types available to other printers, they came to have a profound influence on type design that is felt to this day.
