Book Description
Chimpanzees, with their family and community life, group politics, and manual abilities, fascinate humans and provide up with many clues to our own evolution. In captivity, some chimpanzees have been taught to communicate using sign language or symbols. Such achievements, however, are little more than tricks compared to the remarkable skills they show in their own wild environment. Chimpanzees explores the lives of the chimpanzees and describes the differences between two species--the common chimpanzee and the pygmy chimpanzee, also known as the bonobo. The chapters cover: the daily life of chimpanzees, traveling, foraging, and socializing in their forest habitat; the stages of a young chimpanzee's development; the importance of experience in successful motherhood; the controlling hierarchy of male and female behavior, particularly in mating strategies; how chimpanzees use tools to solve problems of daily life; how they work as a team for hunting and protection; and how they use their social intelligence. With its lively narrative style, attractive design, and appealing photographs Chimpanzees informs and delights the reader. The intriguing world of our closest animal cousins, the chimpanzees, is explored in this richly detailed text and collection of superb photographs. From the intricacies of social organization and mating strategies to the making and using of tools, Chimpanzees builds a lively picture of the lives of these remarkable creatures. Author Tamsin Constable uses the latest research, new case studies, and her own observations of their everyday activities and interactions to provide this account. Packed with fascinating facts and extraordinary photographs, this book is one of three titles in a series about our primate relatives.

Customer Reviews:
Skip the Fodor's, Get the Lonely Planet Instead.......2003-06-06
I bought this book and carried it along with me to Morocco, along with a couple of other travel guides. I found this one to be the least useful, and I abandoned it along the way to lighten my load. In my opinion, the Lonely Planet Guide was the best. I would advise against wasting your money on this one.
Good for highlights, short on detail.......2000-09-05
The guide is very good at giving an overview of what to see and visit and sample itenerarys. However, it is extremely lacking in detail from places to stay to potential dangers that can be faced in different areas. This, in combination with the Lonely Planet, which is short on overviews but has extensive details is great.

Customer Reviews:
good introduction.......2007-03-20
This product is a good introduction to ancient Egypt. It includes some papyrus, hyroglyphic stamps and ink pad, beads for a necklace, a booklet about Egypt, two games, and instructions and grid so that kids can make a painting just like ancient Egyptians made in pyramids. Some pieces are very small, so this is not for younger kids.
Great Gift.......2007-01-10
I gave this to my 10 year old nephew for Christmas and he absolutely loved it! He liked all the activities in it. The only negative is that the lock on the box sticks and is almost impossible to open even with the key.
Mixed Review.......2006-11-10
I ordered this kit during our study of ancient civilizations. What better place to begin than Egypt. I thought my boys (ages 6 & 7) would enjoy the games and making their own heiroglyphics. The package was very interesting looking and peaked their curiosity immediately. However, the beads to the necklace were next to impossible to string. The stamps were also very small and did not stay in the place when trying to make the heiroglyphic messages. The book and sample papyrus were great. In fact, my 6 year old took both to our homeschool co-op for show and tell. All in all, not bad, but a little pricey for what you get.
Obbsessed and Loving It!.......2005-02-28
First off, I love ancient Egypt! It's my life! I want to be an Egyptologist when I grow up!! I love it, love it, love it! I admit, I have never gottne this product, but from the reviews I've read, it sounds GREAT!!! I want myself, but being a kid, I'm broke....... But, you should deffitnitly get this if you love egypt! Even if you don't, it's a great way to start to love egypt! I love it and I don't even have it!! It sounds like so much fun! So go ahead, if you have money go out there and get it!!
Great for all ages.......2003-11-04
I bought this treasure chest as a "treat" (for my daughter or myself, I am still not sure) to finish off our study of ancient Egypt. We couldn't wait, so we opened it right away and were thrilled. I expected most of the activities to be too hard for my 6yo, but she has enjoyed them thoroughly. The lock can be a bit hard for small fingers to open, but the key is easy to work and that can be fun enough in itself. There are 2 board games, both of which she could play. One is very, very simple (think Chutes and Ladders) while the other requires more strategy. Depending on your child's interests/abilities in games you might find that you only play one of the two, but we have been happy playing both. The playing pieces are made rather flimsy light cardboard, but they are functional enough if your child is careful. The stamping set is about average, and suffers from all the little problems child's stamping kits are heir to, but overall produces legible hieroglyphs. You'll need an extra pair of hands or weights to hold the papyrus unrolled, but it looks great when you're finished. The hieroglyph "decoder" wheel has been great fun for my daughter who thinks codes are exciting. The necklace was a little disappointing, only because the string provided came apart when I tried to disentangle it. We replaced it with our own string/wire and made our lovely necklace just fine. The beads had holes large enough for my child to thread them herself, although a needle proved helpful. The posters (one of deities reverses to one of regents and another one with a map) are attractive and informative without being overwhelming and my daughter enjoyed placing the approppriate stickers on the spaces provided on the map. The only piece of this chest w ehave not used yet is the grid for reproducing an egyptian picture, but I'm sure many other children are more artistically inclined than mine and will find it fun. Overall, my daughter and I have enjoyed this kit immensely and highly recommend it.

There's a description of basic feline behavior and cat sociology, and a careful analysis of various physical and emotional issues. Find out how to cope with foibles and faults, and handle problems that range from bad breath to arthritis, from obesity to aging. Earth on Her Hands celebrates the kind of people who have quietly and to minimal acclaim, over two centuries, developed and polished American garden style. These are the avid gardeners--mostly women--who establish and support community horticultural organizations and whose own gardens are examples of personal expression with unique local characteristics.
Starr Ockenga has interviewed 18 women who have worked and shaped their land, often over the course of several decades, into their dream gardens. From Ellie Spingarn's Connecticut stone wall to Georgie Erskine's Southern California citrus allée, each has features that are unique but fit seamlessly into their environment. There are meadows, orchards, a bonsai garden, vegetable gardens carved out of woodland, one walled English-style garden, and one that's intensely French, with topiaries, espaliered bushes, and a copper-roofed teahouse. Each woman is a plant collector of sorts, and each garden description is accompanied by a list of recommended plants. This is a joyous, soulful book that explores the complexity of garden-building and the effect it has on gardeners' lives.
Customer Reviews:
Not for women only!!.......2007-03-27
Men: please do not be put off by the title! This book is an inspiration that proves to be accessible to both sexes. Beauty in the garden cannot be bounded by gender lines. The photographs (many of which are full-page, with lovely sepia and white prints of the women themselves) are stunning, and this is one of the few gardening books where I actually read the accompanying text.
This is not a how-to-do-it, but more of a how-they-did-it; the stories really capture the continuity that results from a years-long commitment to one's land. For instance, one photo shows how a single plant purched in the 50s has grown into a sweeping carpet along a stone wall.
18 women and their US spaces are showcased here. (However, Alaska and Hawaii are not featured and I think this could have made the book even more wonderful.) Each woman gets a separate chapter, complete with pages and pages of well-captioned glossy photos, very readable text, a hand drawing of their garden designs, and several relevant lists. Some of the lists cover woodland carpet plants, white annuals/perennials/bulbs, and personal recommendations.
All sorts of gardens - alpine, rock, seaside, miniature/bonsai, water, citrus, huge-scale, small-scale, woodland - make up this large compendium. The book is 12.5 by 9 inches - a great contribution to a field where books seem to be getting smaller and smaller, and its size is really appropriate for the subject matter.
This is a book that I would have been thrilled with, sight unseen, and it would make a marvelous gift for someone special in your life, if you could bear to part with it. This one's a keeper, and it will not sit still on your coffee table!!
Refreshing Approach to Gardening.......2004-07-06
I love gardening how-to and reference books. Although this book is neither, I love it nevertheless. The idea behind this book is simple. 18 women and their gardens. Each woman is interviewed, there are many many photographs of both the gardens and the gardener. You get to hear each woman's voice and hear her wisdom. You get to see plant lists, garden plans as well and understand the philosphy and approach that each woman has taken in her gardening endevour. If the context of this book were a village, it would serve as a storyteller of the female elders and their creation of special space. Gardening is most than simply landscaping. Reading this book you understand the difference. I only with there were more women gardeners in this edition!
Beautiful women, beautiful gardens.......2002-11-24
Another fabulous Clarkson Potter Publishers book, Earth on Her Hands is a series of short biographies of 18 women who are non-professional, private gardeners and who have spent a lifetime growing and creating outstanding gardens. Each biography includes stunning color photos of the gardens and lovely sepia toned photos of the gardeners themselves as well as garden diagram sketches and individual gardener plant or project recommendations from their personal experiences. Ideas, inspiration and knowledge abound from these women (use flower arrangements IN the garden for areas where color is needed; 'Jersey Knight' asparagus is male and will not seed making it more productive) and their lifelong committment to their land, spaces, and plants gives every gardener something to aspire to. Any gardener worth her soil will find this an inspirational gift to give and receive, and a delightful off-season read.
An inspiring book.......2001-11-10
This is definately one of the most beautifully photographed books I have seen. Eighteen women gardeners from across the U.S. and their stunning gardens are profiled. Most of the women gardeners here are older and have been working on their gardens for decades. Some of them are also active in their local communities in garden clubs, parks and botanical gardens. If you enjoy looking at other people's gardens, you will love this. The photos are mouth watering. Each profile (about 10 pages in length) is wrapped up with a list of the gardener's recommended plants. This would be a good companion to Rosemary Verey's excellent book "The American Man's Garden".
Won American Horticultural Society's 1999 Annual Book Award.......1999-08-05
Starr Ockenga's luminary profiles of some of North America's most dedicated women gardeners are inspirational for anyone who gardens. This book is a wonderfully designed blend of fine photography and eloquent writing. A must for the avid gardener.

Book Description
"New Living" (Das Neue Wohnen) was the title of an exeptional architectural propaganda film created in 1930 by German avant-garde artist and filmmaker Hans Richter. It showcased exemplary modernist buildings and furniture--some of which were on view shortly after in the prestigious exhibition "The International Style"--and contrasted them with the impractical, unhygienic living spaces that were the norm. Visually diverse and full of experimental montage techniques, "New Living" pioneered a radical method of portraying architecture on celluloid.

Book Description
Rural Arkansas in the 1940's was a place of intolerance where it was difficult enough to grow up as an African-American, but it was twice as hard if you were in a family where the color of your skin mattered more than life itself. Hurt and anger touched a little girl who couldn't understand how her mother would feel so strongly about something that shouldn't matter at all. Only after years of emotional abuse, a special friend made her realize that the content of her character meant more than the color of her skin. This is a story of one woman's fight to gain love from a mother who rejected her from birth based on her dark skin color.

Book Description
Bob Miller spent twenty-one years traveling across North America and interviewing people from all walks of life about their conversations with God. He presents a cross-section of those conversations in Toto Coelo: By the whole extent of the heavens. Not one word was changed, added, or deleted to conform to some personal or secular belief.
Thought-provoking and fun, Toto Coelo inspires its readers to laugh, scoff, and shed a tear or two. If you are like most people who have read this unique book, you will never forget it.

Inspirational.......2006-04-20
I found this little book to be /Inspirational/Funny/Sad/I wonder is that how God really is. Bob seems to have a much better undestanding of the "spiritual world" than most. That is why I enjoy reading his writtings so much.Thank You again Bob
FAMILY FRIENDLY.......2001-01-13
I am an avid reader.Having read many books through the years Christian and Non-Christian.I have been helped and blessed by some, entertained by others, but I found this book to be Inspired.I could give this to my teenaged grandsons, best friends,or my mother and all would be able to enjoy and relate to it. It is refreshing and insightful. It will allow you to chuckle, touch your heart and your soul.Give you peace of mind and spirit. Each home would profit by having this book accessible to family members and friends. Its message is profound and I would recommend it as a wonderful gift .
Forty-three Years Today.......2000-03-19
There are advantages of being a fulltime pastor for forty-three years. Then there are the disadvantages. I try as best I can not to dwell on the disadvantages. But the one that did bother me the most, was not being able to answer the questions of children. Adults seldom ask really hard to answer questions, like, What is Gods favorite color? or Are their toys in heaven? or Why is everything that is fun to do a sin? I remember this one well, Why did God choose the Jews instead of us? Forty-three years I have been talking about God, only to learn that I knew very little about Him. This book is The Spirit at work. A Minister who has not read this book is unlearned regardless of their education.
Thought provoking - and then some!.......2000-01-25
I liked a lot of things about this book. It's a short read in that it's a series of statements by folks with 'answers' from God in bold below them. Each statement/answer then is a stand-alone thought that can be read and appreciated for itself. I think that God watches Judge Judy on occasion. One person says, "God, I feel like believing in you is a complete waste of my time." God answers, "I know the feeling." Another statement hit home strongly with me. A man tells God that keeping his pickup truck from starting won't stop him from going out & getting drunk that night. God tells him the truck will start after he's gone back inside to say goodbye to his mother who won't be there when he gets back from the tavern. His Mom dies in his arms, in the house, 2 hours later and the man has not had a drink since.
Unfortunately, for me personally, there are several examples of answers from 'God' that perpetuate the 'fire and brimstone,' "You're going to burn in Hell forever" God that turned me off to Him years ago. Fundamentalist Christians will love them but I tend to take that kind of statement with a grain of salt and look for the loving message that I know underlies it if it's really from God. I highly recommend this book as something to have handy for a quick pick-me-up since you can open it almost anywhere and find a useful inspiration of some kind. Even the ones I disagree with make me think and that's not all bad. It was worth the price to me.
The concept of God, seemed a little far fetched........2000-01-24
A friend knowing my feelings about God, sent me this book. Be it a real or an imaginary God in this book, it is a God I can believe in. It feels good not hating television evangelist. It was the first time anyone had laid it out so clearly.
