A Quick Easy Read.......2006-07-12

Very nice color pictures in this book and good information about shore excursions. I like that this book is small and, although it does have some good information, isn't loaded with details. This makes it nice to use for getting excited about going on your cruise or if you don't have much time to read. After reading it, pass it along to your teen to read.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants some good information quickly or to use with the PassPorter's Field Guide.

Don't set sail without it !!!!!.......2006-06-25

As a fan & avid user of the Birnbaum books about Disney theme parks, I was delighted to see this version about the Disney Cruise Line. The book is excellent and has outlined every last detail of the DCL experience.
I am embarking on my 5th cruise on the Magic in October so much of the info was familiar to me. I can highly recommend it to both returning cruisers and first timers alike.
The photos are wonderful and help get you ready for the trip.
The only missing piece, I believe, is a diagram of the ship.
First timers would find that heplful for getting hamiliar with the layout, locating staterooms, restaurants etc before actually boarding.

I Love Disney.......2006-02-25

I have been buying Birnbaum's Walt Disney World for 12 years even though we only go to Disney World every 2-4 years. For months before we go, I highlight everything we want to see and do in Disney. It's also great to go back to my old books to see how much has changed.
I would highly recommend Birnbaum's Disney Cruise Line book also.

Best Korean Text Series on the Market.......2003-05-09

If you are reading this you are probably aware that good Korean texts are hard to find. Of the Korean learning materials out there I have sampled including the Korean Through English series, College Korean, FSI Tape set & book, and books published by Korean unversities not available in the US, the Integrated Korean series is by far the best. The Integrated Korean series stays away from using the arcane linguistic terminology of College Korean, avoids the oversimplification of KTE, and presents much more natural Korean usage than the textbooks published by Korean universities(including SNU, Yonsei, and Korea U). The grammatical explanations are great, the vocabulary is useful, and the cultural notes are also interesting and pertinent. Audio files for the dialogues are also available online for free on the U of Hawaii publishing webpage.

Good book. You can tell the author genuinely cares about cats........2007-03-28

I hesitate to give any item 5 stars--indeed a search will show most of my reviews give mixed or low marks to products. I would have preferred to give it a 4.5, but if between a 4 or 5, I will give it the extra notch.

Overall, the book is not just useful health information on elderly kitties, it is also an homage to them. It attempts to take the reader into an understanding of the difficulties elderly cats face, and how not just to recognize and treat them, but also how to give them a better quality of life and more happiness.

If you want a medical veterinary guide, this book is not in-depth enough. If you want a good guide on elder kitty care and what to do in emergencies to give your cat enough time to get to the vet, this is a good book.

A terrific & moving book........2006-06-21

Not only is this book full of vital information & guidlines, it emphatically displays this author's true love & respect for cats. It's full of beautiful & touching pictures of cats. It is also very orgzanized in its format. I liked this author so much that I am ordering another one of her books. This is the best book I have read on cats, yet.

Gets right to the point.......2005-10-14

Easterly isn't just a sensitive and knowledgeable writer. She's certainly that, but instead of offering up merely entertaining anecdotes and wistful musings, she gets into the helpful details straightaway. The book is slim and beautifully designed, and the photos and illustrations are easy on the eyes, all of which lends an effective visual frame to Easterly's excellent data and advice.

This isn't a cute-kitty book. Those who are committed companions of older felines will find a wealth of compassionately practical and useful information in this terrific book. Highly recommended.

Great Book for Caring Cat Owners.......2003-11-14

This is a great book for caring cat owners. It starts out explaining the aging process in cats, which is NOT as simple as the "seven cat years for one human year" formula we used to hear. There's information about preventative care, first aid, age-related problems, and - of course - the final decision you may have to make for your cat. There's even information about grief and mourning, both yours and that of other cats you may have.

"Your Older Cat" is full of photos, charts, graphs, sidebars, and other materials that make this an easily accessible book. Cats are not complainers, and if you have trouble figuring out when your cat is in pain, Easterly's book will help.

This is not some thick, academic tome. It's a well-written, easily-read book you can turn to when you're worried. Or you can pick it up and enjoy the beautiful photos of cats. There's also a great resource section, with books, magazines, videos, and organizations listed.

Great cat book - even if your cats aren't old.......2002-10-03

"Your Older Cat" by Susan Easterly is for every cat owner. Even if your cats aren't old, you should read this book. It provides state-of-the-art cat advice... techniques that most people haven't heard about yet that can help prevent problems in later years. And it gives comprehensive, compassionate advice for dealing with older cats. Very well written and organized, beautiful pictures and great design, "Your Older Cat" is fun and easy to read. I recommend it highly for yourself and others.

Fantastic Finale.......2001-04-21

In this concluding book in a series of four about the history and products of the Chase Copper and Brass Co., the authors present the first (1933) and last (1942) catalogs of Chase's consumer products...and a wonderful surprise. The catalog pictures are crisp and clear, and the contrast between the early and last product offerings can be easily compared. But the first publishing of a series of pre-1933 "flyers" that were Chase's first "catalog" make this a must-have reference for collectors. Nine new pieces are shown, and new, additional information is provided about several other items previously attributed to Chase. Definite 5 star kudos to the the authors, Don Johnson and Leslie Pena, for this wonderful resource.

The Final of Four on Chase.......2001-03-23

This book is the final of four outstanding books by these two accomplished authors. Any Chase collector or deco enthusiast should have them in their reference library. This book features reprints of original 1933 and 1942 Chase catalogs, factory information, and pre-1933 reprints of Chase Specialty flyers, some of which have never been published before. Pictures of newly discovered Chase products will be a great help to Chase collectors in identification of their wares. This book is a must for all those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship that came from the Chase factories. Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina should be commended for putting together this four part Chase reference set, this book being the final one of the four. Highly recommend!

This book has a photo of each flower. It gives the height, amount of sunlight, problems of the plant such as disease resistant or insects, spacing, when to plant, when the plant blossoms, etc. A real keeper for a novice gardener like myself.

The premise of Soul Stirrings begins with Author Joyce Joyce Coleman experiencing an epiphany as she lectures a group of high school students at Buena Park high school in Orange County, California. Coleman, at the time a corporate officer at Trans World Airlines (TWA), had been brought in as a motivational speaker and expert in customer service. She found that her young audience was unimpressed with her credentials because they believed her to be just another "oreo" - black on the outside and white on the inside. Coleman won them over by returning to her authentic self, the person who grew up in rural, pre-civil rights Mississippi and walked over two miles each way to school at a one-room schoolhouse.

Coleman's return to her roots and remembering the land, love, laughter, and sorrow of her youth led her to write Soul Stirrings, twenty seamlessly interwoven stories about growing up in Mississippi during the 1950's. She magically transports her readers to Locust Hill, Mississippi, where she skips across rolling pastures near a gentle creek to her little schoolhouse, carrying her lunch in a tin molasses bucket. Alternate transporation were Ole Grey, Ole Billy, and Ole Red, a trio of horses that made the two plus mile trek to Belmont Public School easier and faster than on foot.

Readers will delight in the richness of characters like Elsie, John Willie, partiarchic Papa, and the indomitable Miss Lula. They will learn about the social life and customs of the times as kinfold from up-North Chicago travel back and forth to McComb, Mississippi on the City of New Orleans train, bringing care packages of store-bought clothes to Locust Hill and carrying boxes of country food back to Chicago.

Stories are divided by seasonal activities.

Chapter one is devoted to memories of life during fall and spring seasons. It begins with Papa, Miss Lula, and others who lived at Locust Hill, Belmont, and surrounding communities working together to build a school so classes would not have to be held at Rose Hill Baptist church. Coleman deftly adds color and texture to day to day life. In Ghost stories she introduces storytelling as a form of entertainment that was a cultural staple.

Chapter two, Summertime, contains humorous yet poignant accounts of working the fields, revival meetings, baptisings, and rally meetings. Readers will find themselves back in the 1950's, singing and shouting at old time baptisings along the creek bank. One can almost hear the long meters (Dr. Watts' songs) that were the standard of church services during that time.

Chapter three contains stories about Christmastime and the work of deep dixie in winter, including hog killing events.

Coleman uses author's reflections at the end of each chapter to summarize her personal reaction to the memories she uncovers along her journey into her past. For her, looking back revealed a legacy of strength of character, commitment to family and eduation, personal sacrifice, and an unshakable belief in God. Knowledge of her legacy gave her insight into her own potential. As the knowledge unfolded she gained strength necessary to reinvent herself, to begin anew with a career she had privately desired for years.

Original pencil drawings of rural life during the 1950's by Joan Rushing Stewart, a Mississippi artist, beautifully illustrate stories.

Soul Stirrings contains a recipe section, thirteen scrumptous dishes that are the mainstay of Coleman's family's country feasts. Gumbo, baked goose, cornbread-oyster dressing, lemon pie, Christmas fruit cookies, and sinner's punch are among the lip-smacking recipes included.

Appendices include actual photographs of rural, Wilkinson County schoolhouses from the 1950's for African American children, excerpts of eighth grade graduation orations, and donation list for textbook-hauling fees.

We often hear the past does not equal our future. But Joyce shows us how EVERYTHING that happens in our lives works together for our good. That having mastered the joys and sorrows of the past can be an impetus for a rewarding future. Such wonderful storytelling prose with extra doses of inspiration--we couldnt put this down! Thanks for reminding us that we each have a special voice and giving us the inspiration to use it!
