A "Must Have" for your First trip to Paris.......2007-03-09
This book is very comprehensive, definately a "Must Have" for your First (or any) trip to Paris. We just got back and could not have seen everything we wanted to, without it. The Suggested Itineraries section is AWESOME. it gives you a 1, 2 or 3 day turn by turn way to walk through the city of light to make sure you get to see everything. You can find lots of this information on Frommer's website too for free, but having the book with you is the only way to go.
Great travel guide.......2006-07-02
I especially like that these guides are updated every year and contain the most up-to-date information.
Best Guide and Map of Paris.......2006-06-22
Short and Sweet: Just came back from Paris and this guide was the best. The map that comes with it was also the best regarding size, portability, legibility, durability, and location of Metro stops. This will be the first book I reference on all future return trips to this beautiful city.
Thorough, Comprehensive and well-put together - excellent guide for Paris.......2006-01-10
Thorough, Comprehensive and well-put together.
From all the travel books out there on Paris this one is not a compilation of mere facts, photos, phone numbers and page-fillers.
What sets Frommer's apart is the information provided and the style in which is presented. You will find lodging options for various budgets, a list of most important sites to see and even suggested ways to spend time in Paris if you have only 1 day or as much as 5 days, great places to eat and great places to splurge if you can stretch your dollar. Be aware that this is not a book for the ones on a shoestring budget. Frommer provides a good introduction to Paris without being overloading you with mass amounts of information or pictures, a truly well-balanced book.
When I backpacked 4 months through Europe I had a copy of the Lonely Planet for Europe (a thick and heavy book) because it covered more cities and esoteric towns, a ripped chapters of all the international youth hostals Europe of the countries I visited, and as primary guide for nominal cities and capitals I used Frommers (ripped the book and kept only chapters of countries planning to visit - so I can keep the weight down).

Book Description
A sweeping social history of the political roots of the information age, by one of this country's most distinguished public intellectuals, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Social Transformation of American Medicine.
America's leading role in today's information revolution may seem simply to reflect its position as the world's dominant economy and most powerful state. But by the early nineteenth century, when the United States was neither a world power nor a primary center of scientific discovery, it was already a leader in communications-in postal service and newspaper publishing, then in development of the telegraph and telephone networks, later in the whole repertoire of mass communications.
In this wide-ranging social history of American media, from the first printing press to the early days of radio, Paul Starr shows that the creation of modern communications was as much the result of political choices as of technological invention. With his original historical analysis, Starr examines how the decisions that led to a state-run post office and private monopolies on the telegraph and telephone systems affected a developing society. He illuminates contemporary controversies over freedom of information by exploring such crucial formative issues as freedom of the press, intellectual property, privacy, public access to information, and the shaping of specific technologies and institutions. America's critical choices in these areas, Starr argues, affect the long-run path of development in a society and have had wide social, economic, and even military ramifications. The Creation of the Media not only tells the history of the media in a new way; it puts America and its global influence into a new perspective.
Customer Reviews:
Another lame American Exceptionalist........2007-01-27
Great subject; poor execution. Starr is so determined to prove his point that people have the capacity to determine their historical decisions that he forces the facts of his arugment to fit his theory. There are some perfect moments of pure contradiction here. My favorite is the chapter on radio, where he concedes that maybe the technical limitations of media determines the process of their deployment in society, only to dismiss it with an offhand, "of course that can't be the case." The book is also hobbled by a limp wrist embrace of American exceptionalism, as though the geographic, social and class context of America weren't enough to account for difference between the deployment of technology in America and Europe. No, it HAS to be the genius of our political institutions. There are at least three great stories here: How the aesthetic conventions of media determine historical consicousness (a la McLuhan), the role of media in price revolutions, and how media is used as a tool in class and ethnic competition. But Starr misses all of them either because he has an agenda when he gets to the facts, or because doing political history is easy, and economic history hard. Either way, lame. For bourgeois historians only. If you're a media professional, pass.
MEDIA & CAPITALISM.......2007-01-13
This is by far the most exhaustive reading on the creation, growth, and perpetuation of media I have ever read.
At the outset, this is not a light read. Laced with history, the sociology of people within history, and trends operating in American and European culture, this is for serious students of both history and media. For that crowd, it will be a very pleasant read.
I give high praise to Paul Starr for being able to outline not only the growth of media and opinion, but also putting the growth in light of America's capitalistism and industrial strength.
He starts out by analyzing how European Nations like France and England tried to promote literacy through newsprint and postal services. He then outlines how those measures spilled into the United States during the Colonial Period.
Of course, newspapers were only the tip of the iceberg. Starr carefully analyzes how new inventions like the telephone, telegraph, film, and radio were used heavily for capitalistic gain as well as entertainment. At first, the U.S. Supreme Court was reticent to recognize First Amendment protection to these new mediums.
He also compares and contrasts Europe's tendency to nationalize many inventions instead of letting the market allow inventors to make money on their projects. Meticulously, he shows how the U.S. Navy tried to squelch Marconi's patent for wireless radio, and eventually how the Radio Act of 1927 preserved both the national and private interest.
In the end, Starr seems to point out that American Capitalism was instrumental not only in creating the media, but also allowing it to diversify and eventually find the same protection as print media--and eventually find a huge diversification in points of view.
Of course, all along he finds the naysayers like the Catholic League, the Hayes Code, and the Book Publishers Code that operated out of a fear of the public who did not trust these new medias.
Starr is a talented writer of history and can bring the elements related to new medias with such deft and articulation. He keeps the attention, occassionaly straying from the subject, but returning before interest is lost. Moreover, he does real well in keeping his own biases and prejudices aside, simply telling history instead of trying to interpret everything as either a conservative backlash, or a liberal trick.
Kudos to Starr. I look forward to his future endeavors.
Covering all sides of the story.......2005-03-31
It is not the media that plays games but an undercurrent of several opposing ideologies that makes the pawn move. In cases of life and death the answer is more than the difference between good and bad but rather more profound as in wrong and right(read "Brave new world" and you will understand). The family wishes and religious beliefs must be taken in account if the persons wishes are not known. Erring on the side of life is of utmost importance with the coexisting dilemma of upholding the law of the land. The media certainly ends up presenting all viewpoints with pull to the right being balanced by the pull to the left. Intrinsic beliefs and biases are ingrained in all of us and if we all try to reach over with a conscious effort to the other side (knowing our intrinsic tendencies) then negative feelings and hate are avoided and with less emotional burden on our shoulders.
Highly Recommended!.......2004-11-22
International in scope, immensely detailed and authoritative, this study successfully incorporates the evolution of technology, laws, political policy and social development to put the origins of modern media into context. This historical perspective is long overdue. Since media development is actually the story of societal development, author Paul Starr does a tremendous job of detailing the roles of such diverse factors as innovation, invention, patronage, luck, law and competition, all of which shaped the media's development and helped determine its ultimate societal impact. This book is refreshingly light on political criticism, so each set of facts stands on its own. While Starr occasionally meanders from the main topic, the book's rich detail shows that he clearly enjoyed his research and writing. We consider his book essential reading for anyone interested in new and old media and how they were - and are - influenced by their societies.

How to successfully train Retrievers and Spaniels.......2001-02-20
In Hunt 'Em Up!, authors, hunters and dog trainers Joe Arnett and George Hickox draw upon their many years of gun-dog training to collaborate to show even the most novice hunter how to successfully train their Retrievers and Spaniel to become effective bird dogs and hunting companions. Clear, step-by-step training "tips, tricks and techniques" are laid out in thoroughly user-friendly fashion. If you are a hunter and would like to have your canine companion become a part of your hunting experience, then begin with a thorough reading of Hunt 'Em Up!
Ruff, ruff!....(Great Book!).......2000-07-03
After having read over twenty books on the subject of dog training/handling, I place this one at the top!
Not only does this book guide you step-by-step through the early stages of training a dog (referred to as the "Show Pup" stage), it guides you to a finished/polished hunting dog as well.
What particularly appeals to me is the method of training. It is thorough, easy to understand, and if followed correctly will result in a "tail wagging" confident, bold hunting dog.
I have had the opportunity to attend a training session with the co-author, George Hickox and found that the book correlates quite closely with his class material. The wealth of knowledge obtained from this book is comprised of a lifetime of training.
I am currently teaching a 9-month old Lab following the books outline. I am extremely pleased with how well my dog is learning while maintaining her style and utilizing the instincts she was born with.
I wish everyone the very best in your training.
Regards,
Ron

Book Description
"Gardening is the most basic of languages, the labor from which we're all born and nourished. . . ."In these pages, we travel the country with Debra Landwehr Engle as she visits 20 gardens and gardeners from California to Maine and Minnesota to Arkansas, showing us that grassroots campaigns actually can and do involve roots--and seeds and garden trowels. That any person with a steadfast resolve and an open patch of dirt can help bridge the gap between multinational refugees. That lush vegetation and running water and cool stones can help spark the fading memories of our elderly. And that our children can learn about where food comes from, labyrinths, wetlands systems, and healing from grief and loss just by digging in the earth with a caring adult hand to guide them.As the stories in this remarkable collection demonstrate, the simplest act of gardening can produce significant changes in the lives of people we might never even meet. Consider the man who sends seedlings and greenhouses halfway around the world to feed hospital patients, or the immigrant woman who began selling her own flowers as a way to raise money for overseas charities, or the couple who offers their land as a midday retreat for the residents of nearby nursing homes. These acts and others are not heroic--or even unusual--as Ms. Engle tells us. We see ourselves in these uplifting tales from the garden, as they inspire us to transform our own little parts of the world into places of greater peace, repose, play, and healing. For gardeners, community activists, and those who understand the spiritual value of putting a spade in the soil, these stories capture the promise renewed each time we plant a seed and give us fresh ideas for changing the world, one garden at a time.

Christology of Cyril, The Pillar of Faith, in Words and Imagery.......2002-07-11
"...whether we understand the person and work of Christ to be constitutive of a salvation we can find nowhere else, or rather whether we find the person and work of Christ to be illustrative of a salvation which is really universally available marks a fundamental divide in theology. In Cyril's Christology, we find the definitive formulation of that constitutive Christology." William G. Witt
Cyril christological Imagery:
The Alexandrian typology tradition of utilizing symbol and narrative, specifically to the person and work of Jesus Christ for our salvation, transforms the stories and symbols of the gospels to build our conceptions of God, Christ, and the world. As had been the case earlier with the doctrine of the Trinity, Cyril realized that it was necessary to posit the union of incarnation at the level of person, not that of nature.
Like Athanasius and his Alexandrine predecessors, Cyril's core interest in Christology was finally soteriological. Cyril's concern for orthodoxy was guided by a clear understanding of the need for human redemption. Cyril consistently uses imagery, of iron glowing while maintained into fire, or bread dipped into wine, to illustrate the change brought by the incarnate Word to his body. As iron, when heated, becomes enhanced with heat energy of fire, so by uniting himself to his flesh, the life-giving Word endowed it with life-giving power. Since the assumed body of the Word is life-giving, having been united hypostatically to his divine nature, those who "partake of his holy body and blood are quickened in all respects, and wholly, the Word dwelling in us divinely through the Holy Spirit, humanly again through his holy flesh and precious blood." Through partaking of the one body of Christ in the Eucharist, those who believe in Christ are united with his risen body and with each other. The Church is, therefore, Christ's body, and believers are individually his members.
Christ Mystery, words& images:
The book is presented in three parts, of eight chapters and a conclusion which serves as a concise summary. The Chapters could be presented as:
- Cyril life and works. council Of Ephesus. His writing career, and influence on him.
- Cyril's scriptural proficiency, and understanding of OT Christological Imagery.
- Cyril's philosophical concepts of place and physical union.
- Adversity to Nestorian dogmas, interpretation and rejection of Nestorian theology.
- Heretical Christology: Accusations, and context of his denial.
- The incarnate Word: reconstruction of his Christology: Christ Divinity and Power.
- Christ humanity: Human soul and "nature". His genuine human life.
- Cyril's picture of Christ, interpreting his Christology, analogies of the Hypostatic union, Divine actions, and theopaschite (Impassible suffering) of the Word Incarnate.
- Conclusion: Alexandria's Christological imagery and Cyrils use of OT pictures of christological prophecy and explanation by natural philosophy.
Reconstructing Cyril's Christology:
This book, a thesis on Cyril's work and thought is another volume in the elite Patristic theological supplements: Vigiliae Christianae. The book reconstructs the Christology of Cyril of Alexandria, in the light of his life, works and defence of the person and meaning of Christ's works that reflect the great Alexandrine tradition.
Steven McKinion studied Alexandrine theology, searched Cyril, and reflected on his Soteriology, his knowledge earned his love, as Philo's Love with the Eyes of understanding (Q on Genesis). He did that early in his patristic career, much earlier than Grillmeier, WHC Frend, Dragas, and where great dogmatic theologians like Von Harnack and JND Kelley missed the ball defending Leo and Chalcedon. welcome to the mystical understanding of the one person of real union (Hypostatic).
Quotation of Cyrilic Sonata:
Dr. Mckinion composed a sonata on Cyril pictoristic Chrtistology utilizing beautiful melodies from Grillmeier, Hallman, Hanson, Kerrigan, Koen, and Louth, etc.
Quotations: Introduction:" Even a cursory reading of the volumes left by Cyril of Alexandria reveals the perennial presence of Christological images, word pictures that are found throughout his many attempts to explain his understanding of an Orthodox picture of Christ"
"The Alexandrines defended the deity of Christ through a theory of kenosis, whereby God the Word descended to the level of humanity by truly becoming man." (p. 11)
Conclusion:
No conclusion for this book could be better than the authors epilogue: "the controversial life of Cyril of Alexandria ended on June 27, 444 (July 10 in the Coptic Calendar) in Alexandria. He had spent his entire ministerial life fighting against the hereticand the infidel. regardless of the judgement history has rendered, or will render.

The Story Of Rickey And Robinson

If you have never heard of Branch Rickey or Jackie Robinson, boy do I have a book for you, it's called Rickey and Robinson: The Men Who Broke Baseball's Color Barrier! Jackie Robinson was one of the greatest multi-sport athletes to ever walk the earth and Branch Rickey was the guy with the guts that gave Robinson his chance to shine, it's a truly amazing story.
Rickey was a lawyer with a rich history that will amaze you in this book. As always author Harvey Frommer goes into tremendous detail to shed even more light on a great story!
Robinson was a true American hero and this book talks to all the right people to give you a feel of how Jackie felt and was feeling during his playing career. The book also points out how he was a civil right's activist as well.
The book talks a lot about the Negro Leagues and mentions even more players that you may not have heard of that unfortunately never made it to the bigs. Anytime you can read about Josh Gibson, Roy Campanella and Satchel Paige you are in for a fun time.
Jackie died a young man at the age of fifty-three-years of age. This great man had to endure more stress, on and off the field, than most people could imagine. His funeral had 2,500 mourners and when you see the names you will see the type of respect that Robinson garnered.
The author does a great job of keeping the final chapter of Robinson's life as upbeat as possible. It was sad but there was so much good to reflect on and the book did that. The afterword was a nice little story and the boxscore of Robinson's first game along with Rickey's player and managerial record are priceless.

******************************************************** ...
Professional athletes are probably no more ignorant of history than the rest of us, but there was something especially disturbing about the number of modern players who, in 1997, during the fiftieth anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the baseball color line, revealed that they didn't know who he was. Pollsters probably didn't ask, but it's likely even fewer would have known who Branch Rickey was. That black players in particular, whose careers follow the path that these men blazed, do not comprehend and honor the debt is most troubling of all. Anyone wishing to remedy their own lack of knowledge, and even those who think they already know the whole story, will find Harvey Frommer's Rickey and Robinson an invaluable resource and a truly moving read.
Mr. Frommer had the novel idea of structuring the book as parallel biographies of the two men, their stories overlapping and lives knitting together for that remarkable period of years when they, almost by themselves, integrated major league baseball. Jackie Robinson's is the better known tale, from UCLA to the Army to the Negro Leagues to the Dodgers' minor leagues and then to Brooklyn, with a significant career in business and politics afterwards. And most baseball fans will be familiar with Branch Rickey's reputation as an innovator, his most lasting contributions, besides integration, to the game including the batting helmet and the organized minor league farm system. Met fans too will recall Ralph Kiner's stories about how tight-fisted and patronizing (in both the positive and negative senses) Rickey was with his players. But Mr. Frommer gives us a full picture of the man, of his religious background (which seems to have played no small part in his willingness to be a racial pioneer), his keen mind for the game and for business, and his endless maneuvering to improve his teams. Each man led a life full enough to support a biography of his own. Here we get both and they're fascinating.
But the event that defined their lives was the meeting on August 28, 1945, at Brooklyn Dodgers headquarters, between Rickey and Robinson. It's astonishing to realize that this first time the men ever met, Branch Rickey asked Jackie Robinson to take on the daunting task of being the first black man to play organized white baseball (at least since the color bar had been erected decades earlier). But Rickey had made a true project of the whole idea, had scouted the Negro Leagues and the personal backgrounds of the prospective players thoroughly, and he knew Robinson was uniquely well-suited-- by his ability, his intelligence, his education, his relatively middle-class California upbringing, and his temperament, desire, and will--to bear the burdens. And so "The Meeting" was not just a get acquainted session, but an opportunity for Rickey to probe and to prepare Robinson, even to the point of demonstrating the kind of taunts he should expect to hear, before offering him the bittersweet role of, as he put it: "carrying the reputation of a race on your shoulders."
The whole book is enjoyable but it is this chapter that really sings. The Meeting has been the subject of books, film, stageplay, and more, but it's never been told better than here, with high drama and a sense of history, but also with an immediacy that makes the reader feel like he's a fly on the wall in Rickey's office those sixty years ago. No one can understand what happened in baseball and in American society over those sixty years without knowing the story of Rickey and Robinson and, Mr. Frommer having given us such a rewarding and readable book about the men and their noble achievement, there's no excuse for not knowing it.
