The palace and surrounds of Chatsworth have been in the same family for more than 450 years. It consists of some 35,000 acres and 450 houses. Each year a half million visitors come to the house, and countless more come to take a walk in the vast park areas.
In this book the Duchess provides a guided tour of the estate as it exists today and complements it with pictures out of the past. It is most interesting to see a building as it exists today just above another picture made in 1900, or perhaps a painting from the 1700's when the building was new.
This book would be a good suggestion as a gift for anyone planning on a visit to England. It's just as nostalgic as you would expect and great reading.

In 1845, a disaster struck Ireland. Overnight, a mysterious blight attacked the potato crops, turning the potatoes black and destroying the only real food of nearly six million people. Over the next five years, the blight attacked again and again. These years are known today as the Great Irish Famine, a time when one million people died from starvation and disease and two million more fled their homeland. Black Potatoes is the compelling story of men, women, and children who defied landlords and searched empty fields for scraps of harvested vegetables and edible weeds to eat, who walked several miles each day to hard-labor jobs for meager wages and to reach soup kitchens, and who committed crimes just to be sent to jail, where they were assured of a meal. A Hungry History.......2006-03-11
An interesting and worthwhile history, made more palatable than a textbook by the extensive quotations of personal accounts and contemporary newspaper illustrations.
Broad in scope and adequate in depth, the book treats the Great Irish Famine of 1845-1850 with a sensitive, compassionate tone, spending great time on the human toll of the Famine, as well as the diseases it invited and the social upheaval it instigated.
Bartoletti vividly illustrates the dehumanizing and horrifying experience of the starving Irish, and explicitly eschews diplomacy to explore the economic and political causes. The book also explores both the (perceived or actual) maintenance and possible exacerbation of the crisis by the English government and the English landlords. Bartoletti concludes that the awkward and faltering relief was so unwillingly given because of staunchly protected laissez-faire economics as well as cultural biases and prejudice against the Irish. These factors created a political climate where merely the forecast of improvement caused the English to quit relief programs, often too soon, thus causing the situation to worsen for the Irish, creating staggering costs - in pounds as well as in lives.
Brief treatment of revolutionary activity is included, as well as interesting exposition of folk beliefs and practices.
This book avoids the "boring history" noose of more densely-written academic works, and is clearly targeted at young adults with its narrative style, but I recommend this for anyone wishing to read more deeply on this subject. Definitely written from an Irish point of view, but well researched and rich in original sources.
The Horrific Blight.......2005-12-06
What would you do if there was no food to eat, no clean clothes to wear or no shoes to wear in winter? The answers to these questions are found in Black Potatoes, which is set in Ireland in 1845 at the onset of the Potato famine. At the time of the potato famine, there were three classes of people in Ireland, the Irish farm laborers, the Irish farmers, and the English landlords. The farm laborers were the poorest, the farmers were middle class, and the landlords were the wealthy and powerful. The farm laborers and farmers rented land from the landlords and planted potatoes. When the potato famine hit, the Irish had a hard time paying their rents because of their failed crops. The Irish people had a long and enduring time during the potato famine to keep their families fed and well. The British Government came to the aid of the Irish, but many
times it was too late. The book is very Anti-British and rightfully so according to the evidence of British attitudes toward the Irish that reveal the ethnic and religious prejudices that divided the Irish and the English. The writing style of the author is very realistic and Irish everyday life is very detailed that it leaves a horrific feeling of sadness for those who lived and died during the potato famine and the years after. The pictures in the book are actual sketches obtained from various sources such as the Illustrated London News and British and Irish libraries.
Horribly Brilliant.......2004-09-13
This is an excellent summary of the Potato (note that spelling, Danny-Boy-O Quayle) Famine that plagued Ireland from 1845-1850, when the fungus Pythophthora Infestans destroyed the staple crop. Author Susan Campbell Barttoletti deftly explores the swirling pathological, sociological, political, and theological soup caused by the rotting potatoes and the aftermath. She relies on original sources and interviews with descendants of the resultant Diaspora. This book is found in the children's section of the library, but frankly, I found it hard to read myself - not because the words or concepts are difficult, but because it is so very grim - the horror! the horror! /TundraVision, Amazon reviewer.

This is the best non-fiction I have ever seen. The liberal use of personal histories and stories along with illustrations from periodicals reporting the situation make this compelling and fascinating.
A haunting history.......2002-07-12
The potato blight that struck Ireland in the mid 1800s produced a nation-wide famine, resulting in "one million dead and two million who fled" to other countries, predominately the US and Canada. Countless other Irishmen, with no food, money or homes, simply disappeared. Susan Campbell Bartoletti's "Black Potatoes" recreates the era year by year from haunting contemporary newspaper illustrations, government records and first hand survivor stories, told to their children and grandchildren.
Bartoletti provides a balanced account of the economic, political and social repercussions of the blight and the ensuing famine. Food was available but the poor did not have the means to acquire it. The British government was slow to react to the devastation. Irish government officials, landowners, and shopkeepers worked to protect their own interests but, finally, in the end, contributed the greatest amount of financial support to the poor. The Friends Church, operating local soup kitchens, and American relatives, sending millions of dollars in financial support, were allies of the Irish poor during these times.
This book is a wonderful historical recounting of the time and is compelling reading for those of all ages interested in their Irish heritage. Bartoletti brings the horrors of famine and poverty to life. The 150-year old drawings, originally published in the "Illustrated London News", will stay with the reader long after the book is finished. The six-page narrative bibliography is as interesting as the story itself, and provides students and researchers with numerous sources for further study.

Solid duck care book.......2007-07-24
This book would be very helpful to they inexperienced duck owner. However, I can't see it taking anyone beyond the basics, and if you own ducks at some point you will have to travel down that road. This book does give a lot of good information. It has everything from basic anatomy of the duck, to diet, housing and environmental concerns, duck behavior, raising ducks, a list on ornamental and domestic breeds, and most importantly it gives you the basics in an easy to understand format.
Having said all this this book has some weaknesses. It does not have a detailed breeds list (only a couple pages). This book does cover a lot of information in under a hundred pages, but it doesn't cover any one thing really well. I prefer Dave Holderreads book "Storey's Guide To Raising Ducks." I feel it is a superior book for both novices and experienced poultry personal. So why did I give this book 4 stars? Simply, this book does everything it can in under a hundred pages, it just doesn't do enough in my opinion. It would be a good book to start with, but you will eventually have to buy or get more information somewhere else.

Nice color photos, easy read although there is so much information and names, one can get confused on who is who and what company they started and worked for. Covers the complete history of the phonograph and the records that play on it. Explains how it came about, all the patent wars between people and technology that changed the phonograph early on. Nice sized book, easy to handle, easy read. Beautiful color photos of phonographs of all types. Lots of information. Worth having if you love old phonographs.
Comprehensive History of the Talking Machine.......2001-11-25
This book is the size of a coffee table book, but you can actually read it and learn something. It is difficult to find a good history of the phonograph, especially the business history of how it developed. This book fills the bill. It also features a large number of clear photographs so you will know what the author is talking about. If you are interested in antique talking machines, or need a good coffee table book, this is a good choice.

This is truly a remarkable book. If you are interested in the subject of phonographs and how they got started then this is the book for you. It is filled with the history of the phonograph. Especially interesting was the story of how Nipper the dog came about. You can't go wrong with this book.

Those who are familiar with this subject will find as a great a plunder of knowledge as those who are just beginning their education. The book traces the invention, evolution and maturation of the mechanical "Talking Machine," variously known popularly as the phonograph, gramaphone, graphophone, victrola, etc., depending on manufacturer. We learn of the birth of this amazing instrument in the hands of Thomas Edison's labratory cronies, its period of idleness immediately afterward and its re-birth and "perfection" some ten years later. We follow the incredible and relentless period of patent lawsuits. Learn who among the famous helped "make" the invention with their visits to the recording studio. Here Come the Romulans!.......2000-07-03
Romulans are my favorite villians, I'm still waiting for a movie that places them center stage. Naturally, when I decided to run an ST game, I wanted to have lots of Romulans. This book includes information about the Romulan Neutral Zone (some of which has all ready appeared in the Next Generation core rule book); however, if you are looking for new information on Romulans, you will not find it here. That is not the intention of the book.
The intention of the book is to offer four adventures featuring Romulans which can be played individually or as a series. I don't want to give away any details of the episodes themselves, but I will say that they involve traditional romulan sneakiness. Each adventure is well written and includes troubleshooting sections that give narrator's "what-if" solutions. A Narrator will also find stats and descriptions of NPC's througout the Neutral Zone.
The only thing which keeps me from giving this book five stars is the cheaply done artwork. It really does the rest of the book a disservice.

I thought this book was great. It gives great detail on how to start and run a Nuetral Zone campaign. Also keep in mind that his is only book one in an ongoing series. For those of you who are looking to place the Romulans at the forefront of villainy, this is the book for you!

If you are looking for new information on the "Star Trek: Universe" this is not the book to look to, but if you are looking for ideas for your Role Playing Campaigns then this might be of some help. It was a little disappointing to open up "A Fragile Peace : The Neutral Zone Campaign" and not see the vibrant colors that make the "Star Trek: The Next Generation Role Playing Game Core Rule Book" really stand out.

This book is good if you have your instrument rating, but it is not set up for trying to learn the techniques. Most of the book assumes that you know what it is talking about, but it does offer an entire chapter of a glossery.

When I read this book I was already through with my instrument training, it does contain many great tips and is a very fun quick read. However, I wish I would have read it earlier in my training, the description of the book says it's great for both beginners and experienced but I found it to be written for too large an audience and was left hanging on certain aspects of the book. Overall I did enjoy the book and can see it being of tremendous value to someone who has become rusty, for those that are already sharp this is not a necessary read.
A must read for ALL pilots........2000-11-11
Taylor delivers strongly in this timeless book about IFR flight. Whether you are a strict stick and rudder pilot or a more procedural and technical pilot the author clearly spells out the basic premises of instument flight, from the cockpit to ATC. It should be required reading for all students seeking their instrument rating; it was for me. Please take note: this is NOT a complete guide to IFR flight. Rather it is helpful in understanding and reviewing the basics. This should be one of many books read when getting one's instrument rating or CFII.

This book is filled with many incredible tips for IFR flying. And you don't have to be IFR rated to understand the material. There are many jokes throughout the book but they are very relevant to the topic at hand and help emphasize the point. And they are not overbearing so most of the material is real "meat". The author cites many aviation accidents to show how not to fly IFR. It is really impossible to find anything wrong about this book.

Preflight and File Preparation.......2005-03-18
I highly recommend this book. It is the best book I have ever read on the subject. Other books did not provide enough information. They were too technical and related to people wanting to go into printing rather than graphic designers. This one is excellent and will make your printing assingments better and faster then ever.

This book is an excellent overview of the various stages an electronic file goes through between design and print. It is not written so much as a "how-to" preflight book but rather as a "what to avoid and why" reference. Each chapter deals with a specific preflight issue, such as Vector and Bitmap Images, Fonts, PostScript, DPI, File Formats, Collecting the Pieces, etc. Anyone wishing to peer into the workflow of a prepress department will get a great education on WHY electronic files must conform to certain restrictions and what happens if they don't. Mr. Muir uses flowcharts and simple but clear illustrations to demonstrate his points. He also includes comprehensive preflight checklists, overviews of the various preflight software packages available today, and an introduction to PostScript errors and how to deal with them. His writing style is highly informational without being wordy. It would serve as an excellent reference book for both content creators and service providers, and would be highly educational for anyone even remotely involved in digital output. END
