Book Description
From the author of The Transitive Vampire, comes an invitation to a strangely illuminated City of Light, Paris out of Hand. This seductively beautiful replica of a 19th-century travel bookreplete with illustrations of sights you will never see and maps that may plummet you into a different eraguides readers through the Paris that is, that might be, and that never was. Amid the Parisian locales you know and love, unheard-of temptations abound. If your visit to the Cafe Conjugal ends in a spat, you can make up at the luscious and fantastic Museum of Lips and Books. From the disconcerting Brasserie Loplop, steal your chair for the Cinema Pont Neuf, whose movies flow onto the Seine. Your curiosity sated for the day, check into Hotel des Etrangers, where phantoms change the sheets and your room in the middle of the night. Unhandy glossaries help you talk your way through these provocative encounters, with such apropos comments as J'aimerais sortir avec votre hyene pour boire un verre (I'd like to take your hyena out for a drink). A rare and rowdy entertainment that dares its readers to explore a Paris one can only wish existed.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-09-28
This book did not come close to the Griffin and Sabine series despite its recommendation for people who like Bantok's work. While parts are funny, other parts are too hard to follow or just too outrageous to get what the author is trying to convey.
lovely book.......2005-07-08
Lovely useless french phrases that just beg you to use them.
"there is a frog in my bidet". How great is that.
Superb imagination. On both the behalf of the writer and the illustrator.
Seductive, surreal and humourous.......2002-01-11
This imaginary guide to Paris is full of surreal imagination that will just make you smile. Helpfully divided up into sections on hotels, restaurants, the nightlife, sights, etc., you'll read about places and services you've never dreamed of! What a shame, they don't really exist! Peppered thoughout the text are helpful French expressions translated into English such as "Do you have a ladder so I can reach your airmail clerk suspended from the ceiling?" You can read some guest comments for the hotels which of course, are also bizarre, and learn about special services such as a kidnapping service or a food tasting service (so you don't get poisoned). The book has some quotes from real people too and the lavish artwork gives it an other worldly feel. It will transport you immediately to a wonderful alternative reality Paris.
Beautiful, Intriguing. . ........2001-01-22
This book is a georgous book, from its looks (plush cover, ribbon bookmark, illustrations) to its content. It describes a slew of fictional places (and a few non-fictional) creating a surrealistic, dreamlike landscape. As nice as it is, this isn't a sit down and read sort of book, more of a coffee table type, wonderful to flip through and see what you find.
Dreams Guaranteed, Nightmares Extinguished.......2001-01-19
There's a reason why this little book is subtitled "a wayward guide." The inverted Eiffel Tower on the cover should be a warning to those of faint imagination, that this book is not your father's Fodor Guide. Rather, Paris Out of Hand, is a handy guide to the hotels with fold-down balconies, volume controls on the phones for those who don't speak French, and turn-down services which leave a fish on your pillow. It is full of helpful French phrases, so you will never be caught short not knowing how to ask: "Do you come to this noctambupark often? Are the bats given annual rabies shots?" ("Venez-vous souvent a ce noctambuparc? Est-ce que les chauves-souris recoivent leurs piqures de rage annuelle?") It is loaded with delightful factoids such as: "Some Parisians don't have sheepskin covers for car seats, but drive around with live sheep in the laps. Thus 'Revenons a nos moutons!' is also the cry of the man roaming the levels of the parking structure in search of his bleating Peugeot." It's liberally illustrated with wondrous and slightly mad collages as fascinating as the prose.
If you cherish journeys of the mind, then this book is for you.

From the Desk of a Teacher.......2007-03-29
This book was great for my 4h grade class. It is written on their level and does describe how problems were solved on the Oregon Trail. It is an informative and easy read.
...If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon.......2001-10-24
We are homeschoolers, and are studying U.S. History. We used this book to compliment our studies of the Reconstruction and Reform Period. My children enjoyed the layout, as well as the information. They liked it so well, they usually read ahead of the scheduled assignments!
Excellent Teaching Book!.......2000-04-01
This book was wonderful to use in the classroom with my Fourth Graders! It is written so that they can easily read and understand it and provided realistic illustrations to support the text. While it is not a book that can be easily read in one sitting it goes along well with our study of the Westward Movement and was enjoyed by all the students. It was conducive to group discussion and covered all the aspects of the topic that the students wished to know from the question "What was a covered wagon?" to "Could they recieve mail along the way?". It lent itself to projects and assignments for the students.

Best for Outdoor Training Method.......2005-04-25
I am an apartment dweller and will litter box train my toy breed. This book DOES address this less common method, but the author makes "no bones" about it, the outdoor potty method is the way to go. That aside, this book provides a very comprehensive guide to the before/during/after stages of housebreaking your puppy or adult dog, including a good Q & A section with each chapter to deal with training difficulties. This book has a very precise layout and concise directions that is particularly helpful for the new puppy/dog owner who is inexperienced with crate training and training in general. It is equally helpful for owners of toy and large breeds.
An absolute must-have for every dog owner .......2005-01-03
Professional dog trainer Teoti Anderson presents The Super Simple Guide To Housetraining, a no-nonsense guide to teaching puppies and adult dogs exactly what one expects of them. Explicit instructions and full-color photographs combine in a plain-terms, easy-to-follow instructional. An absolute must-have for every dog owner - even those with well-trained dogs will want to consult The Super Simple Guide To Housetraining when various stressors (moving, getting a new kitten, etc.) induce unwanted accidents in a beloved canine companion.

More than a Garden, a Metaphor........2003-05-26
First there was a magazine article about Derek Jarmen's garden in Dungeness, UK published while he was alive. I wasn't aware of who he was except that I'd seen one beautiful music video directed by him in the film "ARIA".
Later someone told me of Derek Jarmen's emergence in the punk scene of 1970's London with his film "JUBILEE". And how at the time Derek lived in a big brick warehouse in the then abandoned (now gentrified) Southbank of the City near Tower Bridge, with a Victorian glass greenhouse for a bedroom set in the middle of the large loft space.
I remembered the article and wanted to see his garden. I remembered that soon after Derek Jarmen discovered he had HIV he bought the small cottage which is the subject of this book.
Seeing the garden was very revealing of Derek's mindset. To pronounce the name Dungeness correctly you must say the word "dungeon-ess". The few cottages there were built especially for those who were brought to this desolate area to work at the Dungeness Nuclear Power Plant. The Plant dominates the view because of the comparative height and size, and is obviously the most important "plant" in the garden. When you visit Derek's garden you will also be struck by how loud the humm of the nuclear plant is even though it is set a mile or so away, and the humm is constant -- it does not stop. The ground is covered with big 1- 2" diameter peebles. Nothing soft, nothing comfortable and with that constant humming that never stops.
The cottage itsself is a simple wooden structure that is stained black with windows painted a bright "Caution" yellow. Most buildings in Britain are made of brick or stone because of all the rain; wooden houses are extrememly rare and stand out as seeming impermanent and impractical because they do so easily rot in that wet climate.
This is a wonderful book about gardening and beauty, about set design and sculpture, and about the cyle of life.

Memorable evocation of a unique garden........1999-06-04
Beautiful photography and memorable prose (from Derek Jarman) make this far more than a coffee table book. The garden itself is superb. Having visited the garden in Dungeness I can confirm that it is as splendid as the book suggests. I understand that Derek wanted to be buried in a glass-topped coffin in the garden. I can understand his attachment.

Customer Reviews:
Guess I'll Have to Buy It..........2006-03-24
I am a heavy duty library user--if I can borrow it, I don't buy it, until it is so used and useful that I need it, which isn't often.
This is a book my daughter has continued to check out, over and over, until all the renewals run out, and then puts another hold on right away. Very few books have received that honor in our house!
A great creative ideas for scrapbook and greeting card lettering. Helpful large format.
thumbs basically up.......2005-10-09
I like the idea of using the pictures to help you create a title that interacts or compliments the pictures. I would have loved it in spiral book form so that you could lay it flat and trace the letters. some of the creative lettering is quite simple and not very appealing but some are really pretty and unique. the idea is this; find what you love or the theme of the pictures and insert it in your lettering. so, if its a picture of your child in a baseball game place drawings of baseballs on your letters...etc. bought it on the recommendation of a friend. intend on reading it and practicing the lettering more throughly but so far havent actually used it myself. nice extra touch for serious scrappers.
A book to use over and over...........2003-09-22
I do scrapbooking and was never fond of the sticker letters, so on a whim I bought this book. Goodbye sticker letters! Your own lettering on the scrapbook page looks much nicer to me than the stickers and you never have to worry about running out of the alphabet letters or what color you need. These are very simple to do, I can fairly easily copy them, but I know I could never come up with them on my own. There is a great variety of lettering, each one having its own type of "mood" so you know when it is right for the page you are doing...fun, serious, kiddish, whatever. This book has been worth its weight and if you are bored of writing titles in plain block letters, this will really brighten up your titles.
Creative Lettering: An Art Form All Its Own.......2003-07-27
This book is truly amazing. It is so helpful for making scrapbooks. Everyone marvels at the lettering job that this book has helped me with. I also have used the techniques to make signs and cards and things of that nature. A lot of creative lettering books that I have seen have really boring fonts, but this book has really really fun lettering styles. I mean, there are styles for Christmas, Halloween, flowery ones, Back To School, and just some really fun swirly ones. If you are into scrapbooking or just need something to help you make invitations for that big upcoming party, I really recommend buying this book. Unfortunately I lost my copy, but since I liked it so much I am going to buy it again! Enjoy!!!
How to letter for those of us who lack the knack.......2003-04-24
There is a reason this is the standard in scrapbook lettering guides: it explains how to create those fancy letters in a simple, logical way that even people with atrocious handwriting can pick up quickly to improve their page layouts. All that , and it's cute, too!
It turns out that Becky Higgins' style of creative lettering is based on a simple alphabet that is adorned in one of six basic ways, then embellished and colored in. Yes, it really is that easy! Your titles and first paragraph letters can be customized according to season, color scheme, occasion, pattern match, mood, etc. The fifty variations on the six lettering styles will be more than enough for most people to fill their scrapbooks without seeming repetitive - but you may find yourself designing variations of your own after practicing for a while.
The limitation of The Art of Creative Lettering is that IMHO, the lettering styles lend themselves almost exclusively to a country and/or casual feel in the page designs. This is a popular way to scrapbook, and you may not need anything else. However, sometimes a more sophisticated, adult look is called for. And if like me you have a formal wedding and a heritage album to complete, you may end up turning to sticker letters or laser cut titles to get the traditional look you want.
I would highly recommend this book for anybody who believes s/he"can't" letter nicely.
-Andrea, aka merribelle
