Customer Reviews:
Good Guide.......2007-06-09
We used this guide extensively during our recent trip to Dubai. We found the information to be accurate and comprehensive. We tried a few or the reviewed restaurants, shops, and excursions and were very pleased.
Great for Women going to Dubai.......2007-05-05
Not know much about Dubai when I was first asked to go, I learned a great deal from this book. I learn about different areas, where to go and what the culture was like. Specificly I found the section on "women traveling to Dubai" very helpful. It pointed out how to expect to be treated when going out to eat, what to wear, and where to stay.
I highly recommand this book and even more so if you're a woman.
LP = Awesome.......2007-02-22
LP hits another grand slam. I have not bought one LP that wasn't great. I own about 12.
Keep up the good work.
This one has alot of great information on this amazing city. The maps are a little dated, but what can you expect when youa re mapping the fastest growing city in the world.
Believe the hype!.......2006-04-04
My '5 stars' are for Dubai. I'm one of the authors and lived in the UAE for almost 8 years. I guess we do believe the hype, because we've lived it. Dubai is an extraordinary city, the country offers one of the best lifestyles in the world, and the Emirati people - Dubai locals in particular - are incredibly dynamic, funny, laidback, hospitable and tolerant. Having travelled all over the world (to over 50 countries) and recently moved to Europe, Dubai remains one of my favorite cities.
I'd rather not risk repeating what's in our books, but it's true that Dubai has glorious year-round weather (if you like it hot), access to some truly spectactular desert and mountain scenery, some of the world's best shopping (souqs, malls and a growing number of independent stores), restaurants, bars and hotels (and I'm not referring to Burj Al Arab), and a culture that is comprised of both the local and traditional, contemporary and multicultural, that is hybrid and mobile, fresh and alive. Unfortunately, however, we've been just as guilty as the next writers in focussing too much on the city's sun, sand and shopping. Fed up with people criticising the city as being souless (which we know it isn't) and without culture (which we know it has - many complex layers of local, regional and world cultures, in addition to a growing and buzzy arts scene) - in our update of this guide, we try to introduce people to the 'real Dubai' and 'backstreet Dubai' via boxed texts and walking tours that will take visitors off the beaten track. We're hoping these will guide travellers to get beyond the hype and experience more than the beach, desert safaris and malls, and taste a little of the real Dubai - the Dubai that keeps many expatriates in the city so long, and lures vistors back to the city time and time again.
Mediocre.......2006-02-26
Of all the LP books I've read (probably 30 or 40), this is my least favorite. The authors seem to be working way too hard to sound hip and cool and impress their readers to produce an interesting book for travel addicts. Perhaps they've just been into Dubai a bit too long and have bought into the hype...

Customer Reviews:
Incompetent little book of inaccurate information.......2004-05-22
Lonely Planet is capable of producing very good guides when it tries to cover a destination and not set the world straight. I have seen excellent guides by Lonely Planet, but this is not one of them.
This is not a guidebook to Dubai - this is a guidebook to the author's own busybody and killjoy brain. Disguised as pieces as 'another opinion', the text is littered with nuggets of 'responsible thought' - even desert safary should leave you worried because, you see, it is POTENTIALLY damaging the evironment. Potentially? Or is it that there is no proven harm of riding jeeps on the sand but in the twisted spirit of Lonely Planet, one should always frown upon irresponsible ways of the world.
The guide goes on for pages and pages of what has to be the most irrelevant, useless and inacurrate advice. Airline 'tariffs' (what do these have to do with what you actually pay) are shown down to the nearest dollar, the trouble is that it has nothing to do with reality. Maybe if the authors were less concerned with wacky socialist ideas (you see, according to some friends of LP, airline alliances nowadays 'restrict the competition' - I couldn't make it up if I wanted) and curious preoccupations with anything in Dubai that comes from 'the former Soviet Union' (the author appears never to have let go after the self-confessed experience of being mistaken for an Eastern European sex worker), they would have more time to research something properly.
Like hotel prices, for example. What is that lunacy about? How can they be SO inaccurate? Have they even checked? Or were they too busy lamenting that there are few 'cheapies' (their world, not mine) in town that proper research was not a priority. Come to think of it, maybe it is just as well that there aren't many cheap hotels in Dubai, otherwise it would be full of people like the authors of this book and a city full of people like that would not look pretty.
You will see that in this thin guide so much space is taken by irrelevant 'general' advice (common sense or misguided information, much of which is recycled from other LP guides and which is either outdated, inaccurate or blindingly obvious to anyone who doesn't use the word 'cheapies' in daily life), that descriptions of things to see are so thin and short that they could have been avoided altogether.
Indeed, you will find more info about Dubai on Emirates airline website than you would in this incompetent and amateurish book. Waste of money - and another proof that LP should keep its unwashed hands off the places that do not particularly welcome the penny-pinching crowd.
non-liberal viewpoint.......2003-11-25
Perhaps if the reviewer from Seattle had been smart enough to buy the second edition (which doesn't describe the Burj as a casino), he might have found it more useful. It would also be more up to date.
Liberals will love this book.......2003-10-25
I read this book and found its commentary to be a bit too judgmental for a travel book; there are better books on Dubai as I found, and more up too date. By the way there is no casino at the Burj.
Lonely Planet does it again!.......2003-05-30
This book saved my behind in Dubai and increased the value of my experience there. I had such a great time and it further solidifies my faith in Lonely Planet books. Too bad there's not an update to address the newest hotel in Dubai, the Burj-Al-Arab. This should be the first resource guide you should buy in addition to doing more homework to enjoy Dubai.
Lonely Planet Gets it Right.......2001-07-19
This is the one and only good guide on Dubai. For the visitor to the worker it covers all aspects of life and pleasure, ranges of activities and budgets. Using this guide I managed to bargain my way into a budget of $40 a day, which certainly meant low range accomadation and eating, but this city is still definately kicking and worth a much larger 'splurge', after spending time in some of the neighbouring countries. Well worth the extra money then simply buying the UAE and Oman guide, or the middle east guide for that matter, if you plan on spending a lot of time in the city. The guide captures the essence of the place and truly prepares you on a realistic scale as for the weather, costs and atmosphere of Dubai. As usual there could have been more flowing information on getting there and away. The next guide should expand on day trips, especialy to the good beaches in the region, have a better variety of car rental information. As well check out some more of the cafe's in town, which is one of the few ways to meet locals and expats. Five Stars Five Stars.

Great reference for home or school!.......2007-09-14
I'm a high school social studies teacher and encountered USBorne books at a teacher workshop. They are very informative and vibrant texts. The internet-linked versions are wonderful. They include numerous links that accessed through the USBorne website, not the book. This allows for dead links to be eliminated and new links to be added (even more than are mentioned in the book). The pictures are wonderful, colorful, and some illustrations can even be downloaded for classroom use. I'm very happy with this book and use it in the classroom.
Great general history book for young readers.......2007-07-14
My kids have loved this book. We are using it for the Sonlight Curriculum for level 6 & 7 for my 10 year old homeschooler. It is a great outline with lots and lots of wonderful pictures. The chronological approach has helped my son put pieces of history in place.
This is NOT a comprehensive text. It is an excellent supplement or overview, but is not designed to cover the details. The beautiful pictures have helped drive my son to other sources to learn more about particular events.
Cool.......2007-03-13
This is ideal for young children. Great great graphics and illustrations, short concise explanations. It's substantial for the young reader/learner.
USBORNE HISTORY.......2007-03-12
I heard so many raves about this book, so I bought it for my 10 year old.
The information to me was sparse, the printed words in the book are so tiny, I almost pulled out my magnifying glass for my child. The internet links, are links you can find on your own, by typing the subject in google. The price for this paperback book is riduculous. Very disappointed, ended up buying the Kingfisher history book, which I found so much better in reading quality and price, especially since it is a hardback and the Usborne book I bought was a paperback. Check if they have it at the library or school to see if, it is what you want, before you waste your money.
Encyclopededia of World History .......2007-02-14
I didn't care for the first 100 pages, 1/4th of the book, being dedicated to the theory of evolution and millions and millions of years did this and that. I was thinking the book would be more directed to people, places and things. It is a very clear with simple presentations of the history of the world that can be shown to my grandchildren. However, it has a too much art work, as filler pages, which is typical of the new technology of printing.

A wonderful resource for the history students library.......2004-07-17
Not only does this Encyclopedia look impressive on the bookshelf, but it is quite impressive in content as well. On opening this 400 page hard covered book, it oozes tactfully and beautifully layed out illustrations and photographs from start to finish.
This Encyclopedia covers the Mesopotamian World, Ancient Egypt, Ancient, Archaic and Classical Greece and the Roman World giving you historical background along with insight to the every day life that one may of experienced in that time. For Example, in covering Ancient Rome, the major headings are Early Rome, The Roman Republic, the Roman Empire, Everyday Life, The End of Empire, The Roman Word factfinder etc.
If you want to look further into a topic that is covered in this Encyclopedia, it does add an internet link on the same page of that topic so you aren't scouring the back trying to find the link.
My only dissapointment with this Encyclopedia is that it does not cover Ancient China and other ancient civilisations. When I looked at the title of this Encyclopedia, I just presumed that they would be covered, but not so.
Other than this, this is a very user friendly Encyclopedia and glad it is in my home library.
Product Description
This lavishly illustrated encyclopedia follows the dramatic history of Rome from its origins as a tiny hilltop settlement to the rise and fall of the mighty Roman Empire. Stunning photographs and detailed reconstructions build up a vivid picture of life in Ancient Rome. Recommended for ages 9-12.

Intresting but not very precise information.......2000-04-02
Complete Book of Dwarf Chiclids by Hans Joachim Richter is quite a big, beautiful book. Full of photos, schemes and drawings it is quite disapointing when you read it. The marjority of books on dwarf chiclids focus on south american dwarf chiclids. This book goes further and bring some african species too, but in both south american and african chiclids there is an seriuos problem : lack ok essencial information. The book describes few species of chiclids, it gives basic info, but as a hobbyist, I think I would expect more of this beautiful book. I know it is hard to keep an book up to date, specially with some genus like Apistogramma, in witch new species are being described every day. One final observation : The author is an exellent photographer, his book has marvellous photos....if he could update this book with more info, it would be just great!

Book Description
Religious traditions are channeled to new audiences by textual markers, which inform their understanding and influence. Such markers are signs of contextualisation which belong to the paratext of a tradition: textual elements that do not belong to the core text itself but belong to their embedding and as such affect their reception. Alternatively, some texts function purposely in tandem with another text, and cannot be understood without that text. While the second text informs the way the first one is being understood, it can hardly function independently.
The discussions include the arrangement of textual blocks in the Hebrew Bible; how the oral transmission of Jewish Aramaic Bible translations had to be recited as a counterpoint to the Hebrew chant; how synagogue poetry presupposes the channels of liturgical instruction; how the Talmud can be perceived as a translation of Mishnah; how the presence of paratextual elements such as annotations and prefaces influenced the Index Librorum Prohibitorum concerning 16th century Bibles; the function of paratext and scope for modern Bible translations.
This volume will tentatively explore the wide range of paratext and megatext as devices of channeling religious traditions.

Book Description
This comprehensive guide to creating and using digital type, both in print and for the web, is an essential reference for students and practicing designers alike. An introduction offers a brief history and discusses font classification, software, and the ways in which the computer has revolutionized typography. A section on good typographic practice provides expert advice on issues such as legibility, contrast, size, line length, line spacing, and justification, as well as guidance on how to lay out type and construct grids.
Step-by-step explanations are provided for creating a wide range of type effects: drop shadows, wood block style, bevel and emboss, gradients, fading type, type on curves, perforated type, and more. Designing type for the screen presents a new set of challenges and topics covered include editable HTML, type as an image, and how to choose fonts, type size, and color. A chapter on creating your own fonts discusses how to get the most out of industry -- standard software -- Fontographer and FontLab -- and describes how to build up letterforms and refine them in Photoshop or Illustrator. Numerous creative approaches to font design discussed here include amending existing typefaces, combining typefaces, and creating fonts out of found objects.

Book Description
A Long Way from Saigon is the compelling story of a girl named Phin. It is her journey. But it is not only a journey from Saigon to America, but also the story of a young Vietnamese woman's search for personal worth and her heart's desire.
As she faces life's trials with the heart of a dragon, Phin's journey runs the full cycle from physical abuse and emotional despair in Vietnam to love and belonging in a new worldfrom desperately seeking escape from life as a bar-girl and the lone burden of supporting an often thankless family to finding the love of a lifetime and her dreams fulfilled.
And then, finally, as her love of a lifetime is taken from her, she finds the journey ahead of her is once again an uncertain one. Now, only the lessons learned and taken to heartboth the bitter and the sweetwill help her to continue on life's uncertain journey that is once again like the "twisting path of a serpent in the sand."
Though names have been changed and dramatic license has been taken,
A Long Way from Saigon is a true story.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining but overall disappointing.......2004-03-05
As I started to read the book, I was intrigued and looking forward to Phin's life story. As a Vietnam Veteran & Psychologist, it didn't take long before I realized the book lacked enough substance to maintain my interest. There is minimal information about the Vietnam War. There also was very little about relationships with immediate family members. The book went into excessive detail about her careers in America which included chapter after chapter of unnecessary information that included memos, emails, & letters which cast negative light on those she's worked with. Since this was an autobiography about a "bar girl to dignity", you expect this to be a story of reviving ways and moving beyond past hurts to acheive possibly "enlightenment" or "success" as an individual. With more than a touch of narcissism, this is one of those biographies where you have to read beyond the lines to really understand who you are reading about. From that perspective, you feel sorry for this girl who has lost so much touch with reality. In summary, if you are looking for drama, you'll find it here. Do not confuse this book as a war story which was my mistake to begin with.
I Was With Phin In Vietnam..........2002-11-28
Yes, I was. I know what you're thinking and you're way off the mark! I finished this book just last night. It brought back so many memories of Vietnam past and present. Having been with the author this past summer in Vietnam on a humanitarian project, I can vouch for the authenticity of her life and the very personal story she shares with the reader about that life. The book kept my interest quite well. I thought the early chapters and especially the later chapters were moving and personable. Nothing phony here. You will be come away from this book impressed with all she has accomplished in spite of incredible obstacles! If you ever wondered what life was like during the war for the average Vietnamese family, Phin's story will take you there. It will leave you with an appreciation for those that served as well as the South Vietnamese who had to endure the war on the home front. She wrote the book as she speaks today, so your reading experience will be genuine and personable. Quite a remarkable story about the resiliency and desire of a young woman who had to earn everything in her life and do so completely on her own! A triumph of the human spirit and a testimony to the greatness of the "American Dream!" Enjoy!!!
Moving, Exciting, Genuine.......2002-10-30
This book has a flow to it that is so beautiful. As I read it I could hear her accent. I could see
the buildings and the people. I could hear the sounds of the city and smell all the wonderful
smells.
The book is a wonderful story on several levels. First it is an inspirational story of a girl born
into circumstances more difficult than most of us could ever know. A dysfunctional family, a
national economy in shambles and a nation in the darkest days of a losing war. Still what ever is
placed in her way can not stop her. She not only survives, she flourishes. As each hardship is
thrown at her she rises to it, and above it, and with all that has happened there is not one word of
bitterness or self pity in this book.
On another level it is a love story, but not a warm and fuzzy one. It is a solid love that, like
our heroine, takes the pressures of life and, instead of being weakened, grows stronger.
And still on another level it tells of life as a bar girl in Saigon, during the war. This is an
important story since these girls were often dismissed as having no value. Now we find that, at
least this one, had values, hopes, dreams, strengths and a spirit that would take her from the
emptiness of the Saigon bars to a full and exciting life.
She once asked would her friends still be her friends when they had read the book. As I read it
I gained more respect and admiration for her with each chapter. I feel like I know her. I feel like
I have always known her.
