Great tips and evaluation of different cruise lines.......2007-08-23
This guide was a terrific help in confirming our thoughts for excursions. Had used the Frommer's guide for the Caribbean ports of call and loved it. This is just as helpful. Super ideas for things to do on your own, where to eat, what to buy. I especially liked the comparison charts for alternative cruise lines in categories like dining, activities, service, etc. This guide is worth the money.
Too much cruise, not enough ports.......2006-06-26
The book is a very comprehensive review of all of the cruise lines and individuals ships cruising in the Med. In fact half of the book is devoted to this area. However, I really wanted much more on the ports and excursions, which I felt were not covered in detail at all. The cruise web sites and message boards, including on Frommer.com, are far more in-depth.
Its all about ships.......2001-02-05
I have several cruise books but found this to be the least informative. 90% of the book focuses on the ships and cruise lines themselves. While that may be helpful to some I don't need that much info on the ship and cruise lines. Do any of us care about the ship measurements? I wanted more information on the ports of call and general cruising advice etc.
The best book I have found so far, which also includes information on cruise lines and ships just not the whole book, is Anne Vipond's "Mediterranean by Cruise Ship." This book not only covers the cruise lines but is an excellent primer for many large and small ports of call. If you only get one book, her's should be it.
Perusing European Cruising.......2000-08-06
I must say, this is one of the most comprehensive European cruising guides I have ever seen. Floating your boat, so to speak, is in my opinion, the very best way to travel. Why? Because you always have a lush entertaining "home" to return to at the end of each exotic port.
Frommer's gives us an elaborately planned book with maps, cabin layouts, colorful photography , and a seemingly endless wave of useful information.
Just some of the material covered: Part 1) getting married at sea, best ships for families, most romantic ships, best ports, watching out for scams, shipboard gyms and spas, and important money matters.
Part 2) The cruise lines and their ships, cruise line ratings at a glance, how to compare prices, and almost every line is then reviewed in depth. Including my favorite, Cunard.
Part 3) The Ports of Call! We're not in Kansas anymore!--a glorious comparison section of fabulous places I have been and others I yearn to see: The steep donkey rides up Santorini, Greece, The windmills and wild (human) life in Mykonos, to The French Riviera & Monte Carlo and more.
So, get your bags packed, and be an experienced cruiser with Frommers, even if it is your virginal maritime thrill!
A book to thumb and "ahhhh" through-over & over again.

Great Book, Great Errors.......2006-01-20
Recently I brought from amazon.com the 2003 edition of the Britannica Concise Encyclopedia. It was with utmost surprise that I discovered a flagrant error on page 285, entry "Bulgaria": "In 1185 Bulgaria fell to the Turks and ultimately lost its independence." This is not correct.
After becoming part of the Byzantine empire in 1018, Bulgaria regained its independence in 1186 under tzars Assen and Petar.
The country fell to the Turks after prolonged struggles in 1371-1396.
I pointed out the error to the editors but they did't bother to respond. I hope they are busy correcting the error.
Otherwise the book is great, but can one be sure that there are not other errors as well?
The best one volume encyclopedia I found.......2005-10-31
I bought this tome within the last month and I am pleased with it. It gave me what I wanted: short, (seemingly) reliable and very numerous entries in every area. It seems to have good coverage of even the most recent topics and people (as of about 2001). Yet it still does not exceed a size and weight that would preclude me reading it in bed before lights out. Also, the copy I bought (shrink-wrapped) included a coupon to return for 30 days free subscription to Britannica's Premium Service, online access to the complete 32-volume encyclopedia. I only hope that Britannica will keep updating this printed volume so I can keep up to date in my bedtime reading.
Britannica Concise versus Columbia.......2004-05-08
I think both books are outstanding, and more complementary than rivals. In fact, I use both. Nevertheless, there are some differences.
Columbia's big dimensions and weight (8.9 pounds/4 kg) make almost necessary to read it on a desk. Britannica Concise (BCE) is 6.7 pounds/3 kg and smaller.
Both utilize an extremely small font size. Columbia contains 6.5 million words. BCE "only" 2.6.
Britannica C has over 2000 photographs, maps, tables, drawings, color illustrations; nations flags ... In Columbia, illustrations are sparse, limited to about 500 black-and-white line drawings.
Columbia's 6th edition stopped in 1999. BCE is of April 2003 and is edited every year in spring, but I don't know if they are going to update it or not.
Britannica Concise has articles like Super Bowl, Viagra, Coca-Cola, Big Stick Policy, Mother's Day and Father's Day ... that don't exist in Columbia.
Quantity does not always mean Quality. B Concise seems to be more shrewd, witty and, by the way, less subjective. For instance, Columbia's article Homosexuality concludes in this way: "But AIDS (.....) also sparked moralistic reactions; some felt, for example, that it represented a form of judgment on homosexuality". BCE's same article is shorter, but neutral, and does not say such a thing.
As I said before, both books are outstanding and complementary.

An excellent book for the understanding of gait in dogs. It allows a untrained person to understand and see gait faults that may be potential problems for the dog later. And absolute must for anyone planning to show or breed dogs and also useful for the any potential owner in picking out a new pet.

If you have never had the opportunity to view a video by Rachel Paige Elliott, this book is the next best thing. An added advantage is that you can always go back and look up a question about gait.
The diagrams are easy to understand and descriptions are clear. Ms. Elliott is reasonable and knowledgeable in her judgment of good and faulty gait.
I learn something new every time I open up this book. It is a great gift for your "doggy friends" and junior handlers.
A must for those with giant breeds.......2002-02-21
I own the origional 1973 edition of this book and was delighted to find it has been put back into print. I found this book invaluable when I was fist beginning to show dogs. It was a great help in understanding what I was seeing in the show rings and the why of that movement. I feel anyone who wants to show dogs would benefit from this book. I have loaned my personal copy to many people new to the show rings and all of them have said it was very helpful.
Visual aids when looking at gaits are a must. These are well done and the text is easy to understand. I really like the drawings and think they are the key to what makes this book so great for the begining handler or breeder. Even though I have been in the Dog Fancy for over 30 years I still take it out and look occassionally!
Dogsteps.......2001-06-28
I was anxious to buy ths book when it came out because of the authors reputation and the scarcity of information about canine movement.
I was disappointed. The book is extremely simple. Filled with line drawn animals of modest detail. Some pages have drawings and almost no text. Some observations made by the author go completely unexplained. A drawing will be proclaimed to describe a undesireable movement but no drawing is given showing correct movement so you are left to wonder what the point of the information is.
Some of it is good, but most of the book is for those who haven't read any other book on canine movement.
