              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not bad but there are better out there.......2006-03-17

I found this book somewhat helpful when planning a trip to San Francisco. It has a lot of information about sightseeing, eating out and accomodations. However, it is sorely lacking in visual stimulation including pictures of the destination and maps. I foresaw the lack of a decent map being a huge problem once in SF and decided to get a Lonely Planet guide to supplement this one.

Overall, I found the Lonely Planet SF guide much easier to use and definitely more entertaining to look at. If you're going to SF and need to purchase a good guide book, I'd go with that one. This one will suffice if it is all you can find but if other options are available, think twice before purchasing.

Compiling forty years of veterinary experience, Dr. James Busby combines his wealth of knowledge with the most current academic recommendations on what is really needed in yearly and routine pet care. More importantly, Dr. Busby explains what isn't needed. This is the inside scoop on what pet owners really need to do to keep their animals healthy.

"The book explains and highlights many more money-saving suggestions and gives the reader the knowledge to know when to incur medical expenses and when not to. Some of this is so unjustified it could be considered fraud - or at least unethical - in my opinion. What do you think?" - Dr. James Busby

5 out of 5 stars My new bible.......2006-11-10

I bought this book at the advice of a friend who is a breeder. I was more than pleased. I read it front to back in a couple sittings. Then I went back and took better notes. The money saved from just a couple ideas more than covers the cost of this book...

This vet confirmed what I had suspected... that the vets I had been going to were all about the money and didn't have the best interest of my dogs at heart. I'll spare you the details there but know that I refer to this book everytime my dogs get sick. I have it at my desk for convenience. My only complaint is that he could have made it even longer... I absolutely love it.

                    5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2006-10-26

I bought this book at the suggestion of my chihuahua breeder. I have never read a book with so much honesty and care for animals as this one. Dr. Busby explains the most common medical procedures, what they treat and whether or not they are really necessary. He gives you the insight when to incur these bills and when to avoid them. I couldn't believe that the are vet's trying to convince owners of unnecessary treatment just to make money. To anyone who has a pet or is a new owner, please read this book. It will give you a better understanding of what your pet will need to stay healthy. Awesome book, it's worth the money!

I just received this book. One of the better "Pottery Collectors" books I've seen. The pictures are wonderful, for easy identification. The descriptions are very precise. Only a very small portion of this book is Lu-Ray Pastels. The rest is of all the other TS&T (Taylor, Smith and Taylor) pottery. The price guides are very comparable to what I've seen of pieces on the market.

The trend in gardening books is toward regional titles, and book retailers are well aware of this. Gardeners will find information they can trust and use successfully in their own gardens.

Gardening is now the favorite leisure pastime in America. Homeowners are realizing the health benefits derived from gardening, and the resulting increase in their home's property value.

This book was pretty disappointing. The scope of the book was fairly small (one state) yet a surprising amount of plants are left out. The information it contains is ok, but you can get all that information and more in other sources. There is a lot of repeated information on soil amendment and not much information on the care of the individual plants. Often, 3/4 of a page is devoted to a description of the plant rather than it's care. Some references to varieties are given, but not nearly enough. Most planting explanations revolve around starting from seed, transplants are not often mentioned.

I would buy Month-by-Month Gardening in Georgia instead. I got it after I bought this one and it contains all of the information here (sometimes verbatim), but also includes month-by-month tips on caring for the plants.

3 out of 5 stars An incomplete plant list.......2001-04-25

The best part of the book is the introduction. Otherwise, some of the plants I see most often around Georgia are not listed - daylilies aren't in there! Other than that, it is well organized, but I wouldn't consider it a good list of what to plant in Georgia.

I found Walter's book to be a great resource for someone like myself who is learning to garden in Georgia red clay after planting in New Jersy black soil. I keep this book on my coffee table for a quick reference. The material is well organized and easy to understand.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for beginners.......2000-10-11

I thought this was very helpful, being a recent transplant to Georgia. The information not only gives you the exact planting conditions, a brief history, and several ideal selections, I thought the descriptions were on target. Although yes, I find that other books are more detailed in terms of pests and may have larger pictures, this book gives great instructions specific to Georgia and the west piedmont area of the Carolinas and is a constant reference year round. This is a fabulous book for those of us who want to know what is the best choice to plant in that needy section of the garden!

3 out of 5 stars it is ok, but..........2000-07-17

The book is little more than a list of plants and their major characteristics, information that is available in a better format in innumerable other books. The text isn't innacurate, just limited. For experienced gardeners, Sothern Living Garden Book is much better. New gardeners would probably learn more from the Rodale or Ortho books. The authors are well known southern gardeners; I'm surprised they didn't attempt something that would show their talent better.

                            Book Description

Distinguished author and television executive Marita Golden writes movingly about her life -- first as a black activist in the sixties in her hometown Washington, D.C., then as a journalism student in New York. In those turbulent years, she gained a profound understanding of what it means to be black in America.
While studying in America, she met Femi, an African man. They fell in love and she journeyed to Nigeria to become his wife. In Africa, plunged into a culture so very different from her own, but one she felt she should understand, Marita Golden learned about both her own new sprawling Nigerian family and Nigeria's large American community.
But Femi, once her strength, began to insist she fit herself into the strict mold of his society and assume the submissive role of a Nigerian wife.
In her new, strange surroundings, Marita Golden discovered that home is not simply a destination, but rather something you must carry always inside you.
"A marvelous journey . . . powerful imagery . . . distinctly drawn characters come alive, events pulsate with energy." -- The Washington Post Book World

                            Customer Reviews:

                            3 out of 5 stars A Powerful Story...from Her Point of View.......2003-04-01

I rate this book highly insomuch as it held my attention to the end. It reads like a novel, which makes it difficult to put down. I recommend it to anyone interested in understanding the challenges of inter-cultural marriages, especially as lived in a foreign country. But the powerful lessons of this book cannot be grasped unless the reader takes into account the inherent flaw of all autobiographies: It is one-sided.

The reader is pulled into the life of Marita and is forced to see and feel the sadness, happiness, and grief of her life. The images she paints of the characters are less reflections of reality than they are reflections of what she has seen in them. Although the American is inevitably disturbed by some Nigerian cultural traditions, a closer look reveals American culture is just as, if not more, disturbing. Marita's story illustrates, perhaps unintentionally, the severe judgment and selfishness of Americans that prevent true multi-cultural understanding. Some passages reveal this more profoundly than others. In one, she discusses the culture of arranged marriages. As she reflects on the American girlfriends of a Nigerian man, she ponders the contradictions as she remembers the women: "Girls like me. Who chose their own husbands. Who thought love was a miracle that bound them to him...Yet when he wanted to marry, he sent home for a wife. A stranger whose body had curves and secret places he would discover only after the fact. A woman of his culture to whom he would owe no explanations. A faceless, anonymous, obedient woman." As an American, I could relate to her perspective, but I could not help feeling ashamed of it also. It is embarassingly one-sided, and the condescending tone is too profound to ignore.

Once married, Marita's American contradictions become more pronounced as she is openly repulsed by polygamy but condones and even commits adultery. The most disturbing part of the book is also the clearest example of the autobiographical flaw: when her emotional "needs" take precedence over even the right of her child to have a father. She was no more innocent than her husband in destroying the marriage she is hurt by. She imagines a desperate situation when there was really only the realities of a troubled marriage, where the sins of both husband and wife are clear and it is impossible to guage who is more guilty.

The only reassurance I felt at the end was the reminder that the author was young when she wrote--and experienced--this. Perhaps, now that she has grown older and wiser, the wisdom of age has inspired her to live her life with more sensitivity to the needs of her child and his father, instead of forcing them both to suffer because of hers.

                            5 out of 5 stars Great Autobiography.......2002-10-28

This story begins in the 60's, during a time that there was a constant question in the air, I believe, of Blacks, amongst Blacks and Africans, regarding loyalties.

I truly loved reading this autobiography, because Ms. Golden lives through many social pressures, that in the beginning she accepted as part of her responsibility to live in, and endure.

She marries a man who in the beginning seemed like the right guy. But soon learns that her self-concept, her causes and her life view conflict with her husband's emotionally shut down attitude. It also conflicts with the unspoken social rules that her in-laws expect of her.

I especially adored some of the wisdom that Ms. Golden shares in this book, when she learned from other women, "Our husbands will forgive infidelty. But a betrayal of our most importnat duties as wife, that's what they'll never forgive."

She asks what is meant by this, and is told a very true, unspoken message that is part of every culture. The message is that the duty of all wives, according to traditionally thinking men, is that we are there to set the stage on which their lives will unfold.

I had the opportunity, after reading this book to ask many men what they think of this message. And I asked in different ways, to each men. The answer was the same - "Yes. It is true."

And for the women that I discussed this with, they responded with, "Wow. That is true."

A message like this, one which we women learn, and make part of our lives, can make a huge difference in our relationship, because then we are more able to accept that if we are to set the rules, from the very beginning, and be consistent with those rules, we are more apt to get what we want.

Read this little book to explore a woman's journey to finding her place in life.

4 out of 5 stars Things aren't always what they seem to be.......2000-10-23

The author goes into detail about growing up in Washington, DC and then talks about her relationship with her African husband and the other relationships that women and men have formed with Africans. Her marriage at most, was turbulent due to patriarchal customs. She befriended a woman in Nigeria who was an African-American married to a Nigerian who was barren and treated as an outcast by his family and him. Marita has heard from this woman that women have left their husbands not even requesting for their things that they have left behind. The author thought that because she was marrying an African, she would have been treated better. Sadly, she learned that a man is a man, no matter what ethnic origin he is.

3 out of 5 stars Good depiction of Cross-culture relationships w/ much detail.......1999-12-07

This bood offers a very good depiction of Cross-culture relationships with too much detail. The author goes into great lengths in expressing detail wich fills the book. Essentially the book could have been written in 100 pages or less, with the main points.

                            Book Description

In her classic memoir, distinguished author, television executive, and activist Marita Golden beautifully recounts an astounding journey to Africa and back.

Marita Golden was raised in Washington, D.C., by a mother who was a cleaning woman and a father who was taxi-driver. For all their struggles, with life and each other, her parents instilled her with spirit and aspirations. Swept up in the heady Black Power movement of the sixties, Marita moved to New York to study journalism at Columbia--and fell in love with Femi Ajayi, a Nigerian architecture student..
Their passion led them to start a life together in Africa--a place Marita was eager to understand. Exhilarated by a world free of white racism, Marita quickly found work as a professor and embraced motherhood. But Femi's increasing expectations that she snap into the role of the submissive Nigerian wife were shocking and dispiriting. Her struggle to regain her footing and shape a black identity that was true to her spirit is suspenseful and inspiring, an uncommon tale of race, identity, and Africa.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the best books I've ever read.......2006-09-11

I read this book right before my first journey to Ghana. I was participating in a study abroad program, and I was advised to read some books about Ghana and West Africa before I left. I stumbled upon this book on Amazon, and I'm so glad I did. Marita Golden is a brilliant storyteller, and she is so honest. I love her writing style, and I could relate to so many of her experiences. I also love the way she relayed her precarious position as a black woman in America, as well as her anxiety about her place in African society. Her book has also helped me understand some of the cultural divides btwn Africans in Diaspora, and those on the continent. I highly reccomend her book!

                              Book Description

Fidel Castro was powerless, in prison, when the Cuban Revolution was launched - by a tiny woman named Celia Sánchez. A fearless and brilliant organizer and recruiter, she created, nurtured, and led the insurgency that ousted the U.S.-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista, the Mafia, the Communist Party of Cuba, and the U.S. capitalists from Cuba in 1959. Castro's first two thrusts against Batista were dismal failures - the attack on the powerful Moncada Army Barracks on July 26, 1953, when everyone in his terribly outmanned and outgunned little force was either killed or captured and imprisoned; and, after two years of imprisonment, his return from Mexico on a leaky yacht in December of 1956, when 70 of his 81 rebels were quickly ambushed and killed by a Batista army as they scrambled ashore at Playa Colorado. The twelve survivors - including the Castro brothers Fidel and Raúl, Che Guevara, Camilo Cienfuegos, and Juan Almeida - were saved by and joined up with Celia's already viable guerrilla movement in the foothills of the Sierra Maestra Mountains of eastern Cuba. Only then did they begin to make a dent in the supposedly impregnable Batista arsenal. From their first meeting in the Sierras till victory was theirs in the first week of January, 1959, Castro never forgot whose revolution it was - Celia's. And from January of 1959 till she died of cancer in January of 1980, he never forgot whose Cuba it was - Celia's. And it still is, as Castro has ruled the beleaguered island even since 1980 only in the manner he perceives Celia would want him to rule it. Rich Haney has studied the Cuban Revolution for over twenty years, particularly how it relates to America. This all-consuming interest in Cuba began innocently enough. Throughout the 1970s, he was Sports Anchor/Director of WTVR-TV, the CBS affiliate in Richmond, Virginia. After airing an interview with the Brown Bomber, Joe Louis, he received a telephone call from an elderly black woman named Nora Peters. As a retired free-lance journalist, she knew Joe and he fondly remembered her. Over the next twelve years, until she died at the age of 82, Haney and Peters established a warm friendship. Ms. Peters first met Celia Sánchez in 1953 in Batista's Cuba. The letters Ms. Peters received from Celia between 1959 and 1979 describe Celia's life during and after the overthrow of the U.S.-backed Batista regime, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the continuing harassment from Florida-based Cuban émigré groups. Haney writes from the basis of this remarkable collection of letters, plus personal correspondence with Cuban journalist Marta Rojas and information gathered from Cuban archives and museums and the US National Archives. He went to Cuba in March 2004, on a legal license from the U.S. Treasury, to attempt to confirm the mystical hold Celia exercises over Fidel Castro to this day. That confirmation was realized. Celia Sánchez was and is the heart and soul of the Cuban Revolution, and it will be her Cuba as long as Fidel Castro is in place. Castro turned 79 on August 13, 2005, in his 46th year as Cuba's leader. The transition to post-Castro Cuba looms vividly on the horizon, whether it comes as a result of natural causes or with an "assist" by the Batistiano-influenced U.S. government. This highly personal account gives insights into the U.S.-Cuban relationship and the motivations of Cuba's leaders at a historical juncture. Rich Haney has also authored Sacajawea: Her True Story, and a Civil War novel, Chattahoochee.
