Don't pass up this book!.......2005-08-30

The choice is clear...buy this book or regret not buying it.

I had been to Florence many, many years ago. Everything is still where it was, but times have changed. We indeed live in a different world, a different time, different circumstances, and a different economy. No more Italian lira. It's the power of the euro now. Things simply cost more. Business is business, scams are scams, good deals are good deals, and bad deals are bad deals.

Security is heavy and tight in many of the museums. These are, after all, icons of civilization and a religious society and history. Bags will be checked, metal detectors are in use, you will empty your pockets, and you will be scanned. In spite of a highly visible police force, thieves, gangs, and gypsies still stalk the tourists and still try their hand or tricks to part you and your money.

This book by Rick Steve prepares you for all the best and all the worst that Florence and Tuscany has to offer. You can not do Florence in just a day or two, but if you have no choice then you have to prepare long in advance.

I can not stress enough the importance of checking his web site for updates, most importantly the Florence area attractions. Otherwise, without this book and advice on his website, BE PREPARED TO STAND IN LINE AT THE UFFIZI FOR UP TO 7 HOURS! ACCADEMIA FOR UP TO 4 HOURS! Or you can buy this book, take his and my advice, and buy your tickets well in advance. No waiting in line, just show up at your scheduled time. It is that easy. You can order from several different sources online or wait until you get to Florence and call in your order and save additional service fees and shipping fees. As an example; while entering the Accademia, two young ladies studying in Spain from UCLA were behind us. All of us already had our tickets and were simply waiting for our assigned entry time. They had already been to the Uffizi earlier that day and also preordered tickets. They related talking to some other college students who had been in line for 5 hours trying to get in, were no where near the entry, and ran the risk of not getting in by the time they stopped allowing entry. For both the Uffizi and Accademia, those that have reservations have a separate line and entry point. So get your tickets in advance! Enough said.

The value of this book comes in many forms. This is a great tour guide through each and every museum with suggested routes and paths to take, highlights the features in each room along with some historical perspective, and guides you along effortlessly. This is what others pay big bucks for...tour guides. This book essentially does this very well. We found one of the best values in the "undiscovered" gems of Florence that Rick pointed out (some of the real bargains). You can stand in line for hours to enter the Duomo, you can stand in another line for hours to climb up to the dome of the Duomo, or you can walk over to the Bell Tower where there is no line. There is also no elevator, just 414 steps but equally impressive and incredible views of the Duomo and the Florentine landscape. You can admire the doors of the Baptistery if you can get close enough. Or you can go to the Duomo Museum behind the Duomo and see the originals. This museum is a real gem. No lines, reasonable admission, self paced tour. Oh, and you can take plenty of pictures. This was never an issue in any museum in the past but now NO FOTO is everywhere. They want to protect the precious works of art but I feel the main motivation is to buy the overpriced books and pictures in the museum shops. In the Duomo Museum, you will also find Michelangelo's second Pieta, works by Donatello, actual models of the dome as well as drawings, many original elements from the Duomo, and countless other Florentine and Renaissance works to rival the Uffizi and Accademia. Again, with no lines and take all the pictures you want. You will also enjoy the religious relics like St. John the Baptist's finger, a tooth from the same, St. Peter's chains, the jawbone of other saints (or are they?) as the author points out. Another great bargain and no standing in line is the Bargello in Palazzo Vecchio. See even more Michelangelo, Donatello, and four more variations of David. Great self paced tour at your leisure with art students sprawled out all over the place sketching the statures and perhaps the patrons.

Walk and enjoy Florence day and night. Even with all the preparation and advice taken from the book and web site, two gypsy girls did the "trip and fall" routine where one braces herself against the other and against an unsuspecting person. This person happened to be my wife whom had a hand run completely down inside her panties in attempts to find and snatch (no pun intended) a money belt. I was the one wearing the money belt so I missed out on a cheap thrill.

Rick is right on with this book. He is right on with the fact that Florence indeed HAS THE BEST GELATO (tried several and was never disappointed). We were unable to book any hotels recommended due to peak tourist season and the popularity of this book. The only contradiction I can mention is to avoid the recommended Ristorante il Cavallino on Palazzo Vecchio. We found this to be a sorry excuse for Tuscan cuisine, overpriced for the fare, and rude behavior from more than one waiter. This view was also shared by other diners. You end up getting stuck paying for the pathetic service (servizio) as this is included in your bill already.

Once again I used one of Rick Steves' guides as a resource for my
trip. Once again, I found it to be thorough and extremely practical in making my selections throughout the journey.

Too Good to be True.......2004-12-28

Abigail Adams life was a miracle. The book was so good, that I did not want to finish it. So I didn't read it for about two months. I am thinking about reading more books from this series. It is truly amazing how she survived when she was born. The whole entire world should read it.

This book is very exciting and interesting from from the begining to the end. It tells how Abigail almost dies as a child. She lived through the Revolution. Abigail also marrys the second President and is the mother of the sixth President.

I don't know what I can add to those already recommending this book - it is the best one I've seen yet. As a novice exhibitor, there are many things about showing that are baffling, to say the least (like CFA grand points). This book does a phenomenal job of laying out all the different cat registries that hold shows and what cats will be allowed, what won't.

Additionally, it contains very thorough and helpful directions for grooming and bathing cats, which most owners should know, whether getting ready to show or not!

Further - the breed descriptions are right on. So if it's a purebred you're looking for, check this book out!

Demystifying Cat Shows (a Barron's publication).......2001-05-02

The first time my husband and I attended a cat show, we were completely mystified by the numbers and colors of ribbons that were attached to the cat cages behind the judge's table. Some cats were awarded two or three ribbons. Most cats left the show ring with at least one ribbon fluttering from their owner's hand.

What did it all mean? If a cat received a brown ribbon with a rosette, was that better than being pinned with a black ribbon?

"It's Showtime!" by Phil Maggitti and J. Anne Helgren quickly instructs the reader on the mysteries of cat show scoring procedures. For instance, a brown ribbon is very good. It means 'best of division'. Black is also coveted, as it is awarded to the cat that is 'best of its color class'.

Both authors of "It's Showtime!" are veteran breeders and exhibitors within the cat fancy. This book is aimed primarily for American and Canadian pure-bred cat owners, and goes into detail on how each of the ten different cat registering associations in North America scores its shows.

Why oh why couldn't we emulate the British and consolidate all of our feline organizations into one governing body?

There is much more to this book than keeping score at a cat show. There are sections on picking the best cat breed for your circumstances, registering your cat and cattery, grooming and showing to win, what the judge is looking for when he or she places your cat, plus a short history of British and North American cat shows.

Color photographs accompany the text, most of them showing serious-looking judges and even more serious-looking exhibitors. The occasional cranky or bored cat also makes an appearance. I believe the photographs were meant to be interesting rather than beautiful, although the cover of "It's Showtime" spotlights a gorgeous Maine Coon.

You definitely need a copy of this book if you are planning to attend a cat show, whether to exhibit your own cat or to admire those of other cat fanciers. In fact, I'm surprised that I've never seen copies of "It's Showtime" actually sold at a cat show. It's exactly what is needed to demystify the whole experience of caging hundreds of felines into one big room, then plopping the cats one-by-one onto the judge's table and awarding (most of) them multi-colored ribbons.

A Great Book !.......2000-07-18

When I wanted to show cat of mine, very little in depth information was available about all the aspects of showing a cat such as grooming , cage curtains ,the judging , etc. It told of all the associations such as (Cat Fanciers Association)CFA , (American Cat Fanciers Association)ACFA , and the list goes on .In one chapter the book tells of how to find the perfect kitten and what to look for health wise in a kitten .In another chapter it gives a brief but indepth information about many different breeds and the Cat registries they are accepted to be shown in . It tells the basics of cat breeding and a chapter on feline health . It also includes a list of stuff to consider bringing to a show like grooming tools etc. It's Show Time told me about every association, how to get your Champion , Grand Championship and about regional and national awards .That's just to name some of the topics this book covers . I still often refer to it and it is a great addition to my cat book collection and I'm sure you will enjoy it as well . A must have for any Cat Show Beginner!

I thought"It's Show Time"was a fabulous introduction to showing.As a beginner I wanted to know everythng possible about the world of cat Showing.IT tells how to find a kitten .papers and Many other things . The thing that I really enjoyed about this book was What titles such as Grand Champion you can get in each cat association like ACFA and CFA and how to achieve these titles.It tells about what to bring to a show , cat show preperation , cage curtains , checking in, the judges routine etc. "It's Show Time" also includes an article about accepted breeds and in which associations they are accepted . It also gives insight to breeding cats and includes a glossary of cat and cat show terms in the back of the book.I would reccomend this book to anyone who wants a book that is easy to understand and gives a great deal of information on all the aspects of showing and cats in genral.A truly wonderful book! I give it 5 stars!

I received this gorgeous book last Christmas and have since read through it so many times it's getting dog-eared! It's not only a comprehensive volume, covering everything from salsify to celeriac and kolhrabi to tomatoes, peppers, and lettuce, but it also gives excellent tips on how to set up your garden, when to harvest, and how to store your vegetables. It's arranged in a very user-friendly way, with tips and tricks and reccommended varieties on the side and loads of photographs. In fact, the full-color pictures are so incredibly gorgeous that this could be a coffee table book! Do yourself or the gardener in your life (amateur or otherwise) a favor and pick this up!!

I've checked out most vegetable gardening books at the local library and used the extension service materials, but this is the best general guide I've seen. Each vegetable and common herb gets its own page with how to plant, maintaing harvest and treat common problems. There are organic methods side by side with nonorganic methods to let the reader choose instance by instance. Each page has an illustration or actual photograph. Where appropriate information on growing in different hardiness zones is included. There are also step by step instructions on planing, preparing the ground, sowing and planting, making your garden grow (watering, feedings, weeding, pests diseases, harvest and storage, and lastly pages for each vegetable as grouped into sections such as herbs, root and stem crops etc. I checked this out from the library but decided to buy it after realzing how useful it will be in my house as a reference.

I loved this book it told a story of a man Who is blessed in meny ways. His path is life was not an easy one But still he turned to god to find and found the light . This book is stunning in to meny ways for me to write down just read it.

A Dandy Guide To A Dandy Town.......2004-10-11

Frankfurt probably doesn't rank very high on the must see lists of the many people who vacation in Germany every year, and that's a shame, because this great city is definitely worth a couple of days. Many people however, visit Frankfurt on business each year, because the city has an incredible trade fair facility: the Messe. The Frankfurt Book Fair, founded in the late 1400s, is the world's largest and most important book fair and it is held at the Messe every year. For those visiting Frankfurt, on business or for pleasure, the Frommer's Portable Frankfurt is a really handy book to pack along. It's a small, slender volume, so it won't take up much space in your luggage; but it is packed with valuable info on the city that will help you maximize your touring time and get the most for your money in Frankfurt's restaurants. In addition, there is a small section devoted to nearby towns for day trippers that I found particularly useful when I decided to go see the castle in Aschafensburg. It's overpriced.......2006-06-20

"The Beginner's Guide to Drawing People" by Patricia Monahan

It is way overpriced. Besides, offering a drawing book that offers FEMALE nude studies, and neglects entirely, MALE nude studies, does not make the book a bargain, especially when it is titled "Drawing PEOPLE". If a book is about drawing PEOPLE, shouldn't there be MALE people as well?

This book has 216 pages. That's twice the number of pages that most figure drawing books have, and the FOUR authors still limit it to nude female anatomy? Is that sexist, or merely neglectful?
The best "instructional" books always come from the singular vision of one author. Sure enough, this book has a "fractured" feel.
