Book Description
The germfree animal is reared in the laboratory to be bacteria free; its counterpart, the gnotobiotic animal, is exposed to select microorganisms. The need for such an animal model for use in biomedical studies was first expressed by Pasteur in the late 1800s. Subsequent development of germfree and gnotobiotic animals led to an explosion of studies on the effects of microflora and its components on the physiology and metabolism of the host. Germfree and Gnotobiotic Animal Models brings together the most notable points of early and recent studies and gives reference to the most pertinent literature.

Roadside America is a Baedeker to the junkiest attractions on America's major, minor, and nearly forgotten highways. Planning to see Graceland? Why not let this delightful volume direct you on the complete Elvis tour, including a miniature "Elvis City" in Roanoke, Virginia; the Elvis-theme McDonald's in Elvis's birthplace of Tupelo, Mississippi; and the Elvis Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Learn about the Curse of the Pyramids, and see the many unfinished pyramids that litter America's heartland. Jump into the debate about which town has the largest ball of string, the biggest tree stump, or America's true weather-forecasting groundhog. The locations of giant statues of the Jolly Green Giant, an "African village" in South Carolina claiming to be an independent kingdom, and the mysterious "Thing" of the Sonoran Desert are all found here. Buy it and drive west, young trendies.
Customer Reviews:
Not very practical.......2006-08-24
This books gives you a lot of sites to see on your Road Trip but doesn't give you very practical advice how to get to them or their exact locations. There are a lot better books out there.
Make your trip eccentric and different!.......2006-01-01
A great source of ideas, oddball locations, and "home of the largest" collections, this book is nearly perfect for a long trip that needs some spice.
While it would have been nice to see a state-by-state organizational method (and some contact information) besides the index, the facts and details are nonetheless perfect for anyone wanting to make a trip different. The largest ball of twine, the Jack Daniel's museum and distillery, Punxsutawney Phil, Superman's hometown, and a plethora of pyramids; it's all there. (By the way, the aforementioned attractions are just a few of the ones I have seen personally - but not all the pyramids of course.)
With that said, the authors provide an interesting take on the idea of eccentric traveling. They organize based upon the type of trip a traveler might like. If you want an all religion tour or a "boring" tour, they provide the itinerary.
Along with a highlighter, this book goes along with me on every trip. I want to make sure I don't miss anything. It's great and I'm crossing them off as I see them.
Sardonic putdowns ruin the content of this book........2005-12-30
I bought this book thinking it would guide me to fun and funky places to visit that were off the beaten track. Instead, it seemed to be more of an excuse to mock the very places it purported to be interested in. The topper was when Roadside America described the Aviation Museum in Ohio as if it were a joke, when in fact it is a memorable and inspiring museum. Overall, I didn't enjoy the tone of the book, which to me, seemed to be one of derisive put-downs. I think many of the places described in this book would be fun to visit, but it's hard to pick out the good from the bad, with the way this book is written.
A great guide to take on a road trip.......2005-09-21
Even though it lacks a bit of organization, the places are true Americana -- the essence of a real road trip. This book is a great accompaniment to Live Your Road Trip Dream - Travel for a year for the cost of staying home -- the ultimate road trip planner.
Be sure to check out some of these great places on your next long distance road trip.
New Roadside America .......2005-08-16
I thought I was buying a new book. When I received, I found a golf score card from The Woodlands At Hawks Prairie completed with the names of Dino and Brad filled out on Fathers Day '05.
The book was in excellent condition even with the score card.
Also, the John Dillinger Museum is no longer in Nashville, IN (hasn't been for some time). The museum is now located in Hammond, Indiana.

Not very good for beginners who learn Greek on their own.......2007-08-27
This is a great dictionary but only for people that can read Greek. I bought this dictionary for a friend of mine and noticed that all the words were phonetically written in Greek. Not a problem for me since I am Greek, but this was of no use for him since he is just starting to learn on his own
Excellent dictionary - Too small in size!.......2005-04-11
Stavropoulos' dictionaries are the best available for modern demotic Greek, and the product of a truly intimate knowledge of both Greek and English. It is a great shame, therefore, that Oxford University Press, presumably for financial reasons, has produced the English-Greek volume in a significantly smaller size than its Greek-English companion, which is far more comfortable to use. The result is that the English-Greek edition, hard-bound and at about 900 pages thick, is bulky and awkward to handle, and simply does not stand on the bookshelf as a companion to the Greek-English edition. I sincerely hope, however, that OUP does not seek to rectify the situation by making the Greek-English as uncomfortably small in size as its English-Greek companion.
The only "sophisticated" English-Greek dictionary out there.......2002-01-27
Stavropoulos' English-Greek dictionary undoubtedly stands out among the crowd. While most other English-Greek dictionaries are little more than bilingual word lists (table=trapezi), this dictionary strives to answer the real questions that one is asking when looking up a word in a dictionary: "what does it mean, how is it used, what compound expressions is it part of, and how are these translated?"
It is the only English-Greek dictionary I have seen which follows this "intelligent" approach. As such, I would highly recommend it (and its Greek-English companion volume) to anyone looking for a good dictionary.
The best English-Greek dictionary of this size.......2000-04-29
This dictionary is now a standard one volume easy to use English-Greek (modern Greek) dictionary. Although it is not large in size [882pg. and 12cm(wide)*19cm(tall)] it is updated, easy to use and at a very reasonable price.

Good dictionary but lacking..........2007-02-13
I am reading thru Kazantzakis's Freedom or Death (Captain Michalis in Greek) and my small Oxford lexicon by Pring lacks a number of words in Kazantzakis's novel. So I bought Stavropoulos's Oxford Greek English Learner's Dictionary to help me out. I am finding that Stavropoulos's dictionary contains many of Kazantzakis's words that are not in Pring's lexicon, but, unfortunately, Stavropoulos also does not include a number of other words Kazantzakis uses in this novel. This is somewhat disappointing since Kazantzakis is a well-known Greek author and one would anticipate that his words would be in a Modern Greek lexicon.
This said, I have found Stavropoulos's lexicon invaluable in most occasions in which I am reading Modern Greek. Although I wish he was more up to date w/ Kazantzakis, I recommend this lexicon for those who need good explanations of Modern Greek word usage.
Finally, Stavropoulos includes parsing and declension tables at the end of his lexicon, and these are very useful for determining the various forms of Greek nouns and verbs. In fact, each entry in his lexicon includes a number that refers to the relevant parsing/declension table. This is a great help for readers of Modern Greek.
ya sas.......2005-09-29
Monumental arbeit!I congratulate Oxford and Mr.Stavropoulus for their work.Almost every Greek word has sample sentences explaining the meaning and the context that I find helpful to build up and boost the language ability.I also extend my gratitude to Amazon.com for timely arrival and the latest edition of the dictionary.
one more helpful lexical resource for Modern Greek.......2005-07-21
Because of the phenomenon of diglossia in Modern Greek, there is probably no dictionary that will be entirely satisfactory for all uses. I bought the Oxford Greek-English Learner's Dictionary to supplement other dictionaries I have in a project to translate some material published by a monastery on Mount Athos. The Learner's Dictionary is nicely priced at only $19.95 and is a huge help with Modern Greek idioms, but it favors the demotic over the katharevousa form of the language to such an extent that it is less useful than some older dictionaries for use in reading older or more conservative texts, because it omits quite a few words or forms of words that are still in general use. If you are going to buy only one Modern Greek-English dictionary for general use, this will probably do the job, but if you buy more than one and balance the Learner's Dictionary with a more conservative dictionary (or dictionaries), you will probably do even better.
Excellent dictionary - Good size!.......2005-04-11
Stavropoulos' dictionaries are the best available for modern demotic Greek, and the product of a truly intimate knowledge of both Greek and English. Review by Ken Fassman is misleading........2003-02-11
Please note that this book is clearly titled as being a Greek-English dictionary, which means that you'll only find Greek words translated into English. This allows more Greek words to be listed. If you want a dictionary that works both ways, then you'll need to obtain a Greek-English/English-Greek dictionary, also referred to sometimes as English-Greek-English. There are also English-Greek dictionaries, which only translate English words into Greek...Well, you get the idea.
This particular resource is exactly what it says it is, and it's one of the best. I'm actually purchasing a second copy for a friend.

Book Description
As with
Cats: Homeopathic Remedies, this comprehensive guide introduces the principles of homeopathy and the nature of the remedies, with informative sections on treating the different canine bodily systems and specific diseases to which dogs are prone, including viral and bacterial diseases.
Customer Reviews:
Best For Those Experienced In The Use Of Homeopathy.......2000-07-17
This book is a good resource for those with some experience in the use of homeopathic remedies. It's definitely not the first book on homeopathy you should be reading, as it will not tell you how to take a case, choose the most appropriate remedy, select potency and repetitions, and recognize signs of a cure or partial cure as well as the signs of suppression or a noncurative aggravation. For an excellent introduction to veterinary homeopathy, check out books by Dr. Don Hamilton and Dr. Christopher Day.
Dr. Macleod's book lists some of the major remedies for a large variety of canine ailments (arranged according to body system) with a brief description of the symptom picture that would call for a particular remedy. Of course the list of remedies is not exhaustive and this book is not intended to substitute for looking up the remedies in a comprehensive materia medica.

Book Description
Until World War I, the estate gardens of Heligan were one of the glories of Cornwall. This book tells the story of the restoration of these gardens after 70 years of neglect, against the backdrop of local opposition and a lack of funding.
Customer Reviews:
Been there, done that and bought the book!.......2002-07-31
I bought the book at Heligan. After reading it I found I wanted to go back and see it all again (not that easy as I live in Sweden). Found the story of the discoveries and the restoration fascinating, moving and descriptive. I just loved it. Should be read before you visit the gardens.
An Uneven Account of a Romantic Ruin.......2001-07-28
We all have a fascination with man-made works that lie in ruins. Rose Macauley wrote an entire book on "The Pleasure of Ruins." Think of the ruins of the Acropolis, all that white marble bleaching in the Athenian sun. But then, think of the Acropolis as it was when it was built-- its many statues covered with what we would consider gaudy paint. Which does the modern eye prefer? Somehow, the romance of ruins wins out, and it is the ruin of Heligan that seduces us rather than its restoration. Restoring the lost gardens of Heligan, in Cornwall, has been Tim Smit's enviable job for the past decade. Heligan "fell asleep" after WWI, when much of its gardening workforce was drafted to fight. Smit is at his best when he describes the eerie atmosphere of the overgrown gardens under their canopy of self-seeded trees. Ghosts haunted the gardens, spreading a creepy air, and Smit relates how he had to call in a vicar to exorcise them. Smit's account lags, though, in the many paragraphs devoted to the nitty gritty of dealing with camera crews, staffing the ticket booth and applying for various grants. Unfortunately, Smit's earnest writing would have greatly benefited from collaboration with a professional writer. While this book describes a wondrous project, Smit's writing is often tedious. Personalities don't quite emerge as clearly as certain plants do. Still, I'd recommend this book to any serious gardener. The book is nicely illustrated with many color photographs that evoke the romantic atmosphere of the ruins as well as show the beautifully-restored, productive gardens of today.
LOST GARDENS OF HELIGAN.......2001-02-11
This is not an actual review of LOST GARDENS OF HELIGAN. I would like to purchase the hard back version. NOT THE SOFT BACK... I see Amazon only has the soft back. I have the book here from my local library which is hard back and that is what I want to purchase. I have checked the major book stores in Los Angeles but can't find anyone that can order it for me. I really enjoyed reading about this magnificent gardens that the two men rescued. I plan on visiting the garden the next time I am in Cornwall.
Excellent.......1999-07-25
You will love this if you are interested in gardening. Especially old gardening tools which are a favorite of mine.
Absorbing.......1999-05-10
For anyone even remotely interested in gardens this is the book for you. A totally absorbing chronicle of the restoration of a unique Victorian garden in Cornwall, Great Britain. To think I once lived only 10 miles from it and never knew of its existence makes me want to make a return visit to Cornwall to see this magnificent restoration.
Book Description
The Lost Gardens at Heligan sold more than 200,000 copies—and this new look at Britain’s most beloved garden examines one of its chief glories. Originally created to make the house they served self-sufficient, the still-productive kitchen gardens have since undergone a complete restoration under the guidance of Tom Petherick. He, with the help of a leading garden photographer, reveals how he went about his work, and how best to keep flowers, fruit, and vegetables: the entire output of a good garden. Packed with advice, hints, tips, and professional secrets, it is a must-have for any gardener.

Book Description
Beginning with Deut. 18:9ff and its condemnation of magicians and diviners, this book explores the window that this text gives us into magic and divination in Ancient Palestine and Syria. Investigating the wealth of language combined with the archaeological and historical evidence, it seeks to place the influence of these factors in the emerging Israelite religion. An integral part of Ancient Near Eastern cosmology and culture, magic and divination are never completely eradicated despite the ideological warfare led by the Old Testament writers. The first part examines the function of various magicians and diviners. This is followed by a chapter on dreams and visions. The third chapter looks at the techniques and devices used by the oracular practitioners. Other subjects covered include magic in warfare, in the treatment of diseases, and blessing and cursing.

Book Description
Class up a sitdown dinner for up to twelve with this petite book of tips for entertaining success. It's packaged with posh-looking props, rendered in thick, heavyweight paper: menu cards, napkin rings, place cards, and wine charms.
Book Description
There has been a resurrection of love in our society, a return to the feminine strengths of nurturing, caring, and compassion. Who better than the Virgin Mary to lead us on this journey back to God?
Many years ago, RoseAnn was visited by her deceased father and the Virgin Mary in a dream. Today her palm still bears the mark of a cross, a symbol of Mary's protection. After a healing trip to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, a young drug addict conquers her addictions without withdrawal. A woman paralyzed with multiple sclerosis is miraculously and instantaneously healed.
Gifts of Grace gathers together these and other examples of the Virgin Mary's powers, revealing how she comforts and protects both believers and skeptics, curing their bodies, bringing peace to their minds, and healing their souls. As the world hurdles into the future, rampant with confusion and doubt, people are looking to spirituality for meaning in their lives. Whether you are a Catholic, New Age spiritualist, or nonbeliever, you will find comfort in these forty-one powerful stories that capture the beauty of faith.
Customer Reviews:
Great book........2006-07-10
This was a really good book and it opens ones eyes to the power of faith.
Marian Visitations.......2005-07-20
This subject has always fascinated me, and whenever I'm
tempted to be sceptical I remember the following: The
commonest mistake we all make is to believe that the limits
of our powers of perception are also the limits of all that
there is to be percieved. And I, myself, have had an exper-ience of Mary that is beyond doubt. Though I always wonder
why she appears only to children (who have little power to
affect world events). Why not appear at the United Nations?
Or to President Bush? The book, I thought was well written, and sincere and logical.
Gifts of Grace:A Gathering of Personal Encounters With the V.......2003-01-27
A book of generous people who have shared their stories of encounters with the Blessed Mother. I learned early, not to share my spiritual experiences because people reacted with skepticism..now, after reading this book, I know I am not alone, I am certain, I'm very blessed indeed with my own Gifts of Grace.
Inspiration from a young woman, non-Catholic.......2000-04-13
I read Lone's book about three years ago. I was very touched by her presentation of her personal experiences. She explains her upbringing as a moral person,in a family without church dogma. She simply explains her own experiences. This book is simple, but powerful. It furthered my knowledge and love of the Mother of Jesus. How she is trying to warn us to rethink our priorities, embrace our faith, be strong in our moral obligations. It is not frightening, but infused with love of all mankind. Expresses the power of our prayers. A book I would recommend to every person, I treasure mine.
A Dose of Inspiration and Affirmation - so HEALING!.......2000-03-29
Now this book, is such a great little book, interesting, easy to read and you won't be able to put it down. The stories may help bolster sagging faith and if you need something positive in this world - read this great little book!
