Book Description
"A veritable Who's Who of pioneer cattlemen."Elmer Kelton, from the Foreword
John and Mahlon Thatcher were two of the many pioneers looking to begin a new life in the great open spaces of the West. In the 1860s, the brothers began a small mercantile in the town of Pueblo, Colorado. From a small safe in the corner of their new store, the brothers founded what was to become the First National Bank of Pueblo, Coloradoand the beginnings of a financial empire that would encompass cattle companies from New Mexico to Canada. Together with such legendary figures as Frank Bloom, Henry Cresswell, O. H. Perry Baxter, William Anderson, Burton Mossman, and Mahlon T. Everhart, they created a cattle empire, financing and directing the Bloom Land and Cattle Company, the Diamond A Cattle Company, and the Hatchet Cattle Company. Their herds of cattle, horses, and sheep ranged on some eleven million acres of land. Great Plains Cattle Empire tells their stories, spanning the years from just after the Civil War to World War II.

The real Colorado Cattle Barons.......2000-12-05
A cattle ranching history of the Thatcher Brothers and their brother in law Frank Bloom is long overdue. These businessmen were real people with the entreprenuerial spirt to recognize opportunities and the ability to act on their instincts. Their business acumen and ability to diversify their finances enabled them to promote the Hereford cattle industry despite numerous obstacles...limited water, the elements of weather, and vast rangelands amounting to 11 million acres. Patterson and Poole have done their homework and provided us with an authentic, well researched story on these early cattle ranches who rivalled other more well known operations such as the Prairie Land and Cattle Company from the Panhandle area. It is remarkable that Charlie Russell worked for the circle Diamond prior to becoming a western artist. The Thatcher and Bloom associations with Goodnight, Cresswell, Tony Day, Cap Mossman and the Iliff family of Denver are all indicative of their far reaching influence and successful longevity. Patterson's ability to turn a phrase which is filled with western jargon and cattle ranching terms reinforces his first hand knowledge of cattle ranching. The true history of these early cattle companies is a fascinating story of real people who worked hard to settle the American West.

Very useful.......2007-06-18
As someone who has done little travelling, and doesn't really know anybody that has, this book is very helpful.. I like that it discusses th unique challenges of planning a long haul, roud thr world trip. Most other guides only deal with a specific region, where this book is more generalized, but the info could be applied to just about anywhere in the world. Very well done!
complete satisfaction.......2007-05-13
The book arrived when promised and in the condition promised. I will order again.
The basics, expertly covered.......2007-04-05
Long-duration travel is a wonderful thing, but it can be awfully challenging too. You could muck around for a year or two and figure it out for yourself, but chances are your travels will be happier, cheaper, and slower (yes, slower) if you read this first.
This is a comprehensive overview. It's not a detailed manual with exact specs for anything in particular. This book is for setting the stage, and giving you the tools to plan out what you want to do - there are copious links to internet and offline resources. It will steer you away from the common mistakes - too much stuff, too many kilometers, too shallow an expereince. Most importantly, it sets a tone for why people do this, and raises the bar for this expereince. Lansky is all about getting off the tourist trail and getting deep into a new place. This book will help you do it safely and respectfully.
waste of money.......2007-03-23
Anyone savvy enough to want to travel around the world would do well to avoid buying this book. It's got information that any novice traveler would be familiar with, unless they never traveled abroad. It certainly can't help you plan a trip around the world; but maybe around the block.
Not informative.......2007-01-04
This book was not as I thought. Just tabular data one could get from Google. No interesting descriptions of world travel. Like reading the back of a medicine bottle.
Book Description
INTRODUCTION
The world is flat. Or so the thinking went, until someone actually went off to circumnavigate it. You may not make such a colossal discovery during your own global journey, but what awaits you "out there" is something only you can find: your very own adventure. Beyond your part of the planet lie mountain ranges with echo-bending canyons, tangled jungles, deserts that stretch into sanguine sunsets and yellow savannah veiling lions, wildebeest and springbok. There are retina-burning white beaches tapering off into vodka waters that serve as a playground for dolphins, turtles and manta rays. Not to mention over 6000 languages, countless botanical wonders, architectural masterpieces and geological anomalies. All that is already out there. The decision to find it is yours.
My own plan was to walk out the front door, head to Florida and try to hitchhike on yachts to South America - all on a budget stretched tighter than Liz Taylor's forehead. Without getting into details, my yacht-hitching scheme only got me as far as the Virgin Islands. And the only reason I made it that far was because I flew there. (Turned out I was trying to hitch south during hurricane season, when all the boats were headed north or into safe harbours.) This start, however rocky, did launch me on a two-and-a-half-year trip that forever changed my life. And not just because it ended with a car accident in Bangkok, which left me in the unfortunate position of having a broken ankle and amoebic dysentery - a tragic combination of constantly having to go to the loo, and never being able to get there quickly enough.
Before I get ahead of myself, though, I just want to assure you this book is not going to try to persuade you to travel, nor make grandiose assertions that stomping around the planet with a coated-nylon pack will somehow fulfil whatever may be missing from your life. Travel is an urge best cultivated from within. In fact, one of the biggest favours you can do for yourself is to travel if and when you're ready, not when someone else thinks you should. The more eager you are to open yourself up to life on the road, the more willing you are to embrace the unknown rather than sign up for a pre-packaged air-conditioned experience, the more likely you are to reap real rewards.
Believe it or not, nearly anyone can get around the world in one piece (or in my case, two), and I'd be lying if I told you that you needed this book to come back alive. However, the down side to blindly winging it is that you'll make mistakes, some potentially dangerous, many costly and some just plain embarrassing. By the time you get through the first section of this book, you should be savvy enough to chart an itinerary for your trip and avoid nearly all the snares that await you. With a glimpse of life on the road, a feel for the essentials, and by addressing a number of travel's most testing issues ahead of time, you'll be well on your way.
The regional profiles in the second part of the book tell you what it costs to get around, how long it'll take to cross the various landmasses and if there are any rail, bus or air passes you may wish to buy ahead of time to make things cheaper and more convenient. You'll notice we took some liberties in dividing up the world into eight regions: North America, for instance, normally includes Mexico, but because of popular overland routes, a shared language and its latitude, it has been placed in the Central America and the Caribbean section. The regional maps are meant to provide ballpark estimates of the times and costs of overland travel on common routes. They are by no means instructing you to take such routes (it's always better to find your own way), nor are they completely accurate, since prices change, exchange rates fluctuate and delays do occur, particularly in less-developed regions.
Of course, you'll want more specific information eventually, either from websites or publications listed in the Basics section at the end of this book or from your guidebook once you arrive. But at this point, much more information than what you'll find provided here will bog down your planning process instead of helping it along. And remember that there's such a thing as too much planning. One of the greatest thrills of travel is trying to make your way between two points by the least travelled, most arduous route, chancing rides and roads and climates as you go.
Customer Reviews:
Travel, not destinations.......2006-02-06
This book is really useful for means of travel and deciding where to go with some suggestions but it isn't about where to go, it's about how to get there and make the most of your time in a place. I have already travelled before to Europe, but this has more information for long term, round-the-world travel with ideas of how to pay for it before, during and after. But if you are trying to find a book of where to go around the world- try "1000 things to see before you die" or other destination oriented books.
Very Useful in the Macro Sense.......2006-01-28
I don't normally write reviews, but I was motivated to do so after reading the negative reviews of this book, which almost caused me not to buy it. This book is full of information you could pick up from talking with other travelers or through your own travel experiences, but if you've never really done independent traveling (backpacking and hosteling) before, this is a great resource to give you an overview of what to consider in planning your trip and what to expect once you're on the road. You would need region specific guides for all the usual information (lodging and restaurant reviews, local transportation, phrases, and customs, etc), but this book provides an overview of how to approach large scale travel, such as information on major transportation routes (RTW plane tickets, Eurail passes, Transiberian railway). It helped me work through the decision-making process on the big issues (RTW ticket or not?, rent a car to drive around Europe or buy one? camp or hostel in a given region?).
Those who have been disappointed by this book probably are more seasoned travelers. If you've already backpacked around germany for a month, this book might not be for you. But if independent traveling is a new adventure for you, this book may have a lot to offer. I for one am glad I bought it and found it very useful.
Soooo basic........2005-12-11
I felt like this book was a compilation of short travel pamphlets on several subjects. A very extensive number of topics with a little blurb about each. There is absolutely no depth, and no real opinionated advice. It's all very "you could do this, here are one or two reasons why, but you also could do this, and some reasons why, but for more information, look elsewhere." It's more like a list of more-helpful websites, which I could have easily found myself on Google.
Everything You Need For Planning A Global Journey.......2005-09-16
From visas to packing, from travel costs to the best places to visit, this book does an outstanding job in preparing a potential traveller for a long term international trip. I especially appreciated the "Basics" section which contained a wealth of internet resources.
One thing to keep in mind, however, is that this book is primarily geared toward young backpackers who want to travel the world on a super tight budget. Also the writer is British and his primary reading audience is European youth, among whom the 1 year RTW (Round the World) trip is almost a rite of passage. But there is also a much smaller but equally adventurous set of young American backpackers for whom the book would be just as useful. Personally, I began travelling on the cheap at age 18. But at the ripe old age of 37 I'm more inclined towards mid-range international travel. So sometimes I felt the writer's numerous suggestions on how to scrape by on pennies weren't 100% relevant. But at age 21 I would have loved his advice. Plus I'm so frugal by nature that I still kinda like it.
Overall it's hard to imagine a better book for the young backpacker or really anyway wanting to make a RTW trip.Highly recommended!
Disappointed.......2005-04-10
First-Time Around the World is a book that is quite comprehensive in scope but less than comprehensive in detail. The author is obviously an experienced world traveler and quite qualified to write such a book, however, if you met with Doug Lansky for a couple of hours, you probably wouldn't be discussing most of the items contained in the first 200 pages of the book. This section could have been written by any travel writer or even lifted from another guidebook as it covers general travel information. The next 100 pages gives a very broad overview of eight sections of the world. There are many headings with one paragraph explanations of a generic nature. I hope that Doug Lansky eventually writes a book that gives the reader more of his expertise and specifically deals with around-the-world travel.

Engaging and Informative!.......2007-08-27
This is our second purchase of the Story of the World series. All three of my school age kids (6,8,10 yrs.) just love to listen to these tapes. It is giving all of us (mom included) a much more comprehensive picture of all the parts of history we have learned with other books. We highly recommend this product for your family as a history program or just for listening to in the car for fun. The acitvity book is also full of great ideas for making this as involved or as simple as you would like it to be.
excellent overview for kids.......2007-06-23
My kids (ages 5-11) request that I turn on "The STORY!" as soon as the car is moving. When the children have friends along, they later ask what the cd was called and how they can get a copy. Long car trip? No problem: no movie, no squabbling, just silence and then comments and questions. The overview of world history in this series has helped me, as an adult, gain a perspective on the sweep of world events that I never gained in my own history-weighted education. The series leads the children to find themes and lessons from history, which they relate to current events and geography. I highly reccommend Bauer's cds.
Rather than an in-depth study, I consider the stories a substantial taste to encourage us to do further research on our own. Even the slightly weaker inclusion of Asian history is much more in-depth than any other American program I've come across. This in itself leads to discussion... The audio program could benefit from some consultation on correct pronunciation of some Asian words (eg: Korean "Paekchae"), but most people won't notice, and if they do, likely know the correct pronunciation anyway. I would like to hear more dates in this volume, especially when the stories cross from one part of the world to another. The first volume gave dates at the end of each chapter, which was helpful in relating events.
All-in-all this series has given us all a context and timeline for the rest of history as we learn about it. It has given the kids an enthusiasm for history and interest in the world that is a joy.
My 10-year-old insists on adding a comment:
I,one of the kids, highly love the story of the world because hypothetically I was a bad student in history ,but now I love history. It's really fun-- it's like listening to campfire stories at summer camp. Now that's really fun. Everybody loves it in the car. It's like a spell to us.
Useless History.......2007-03-19
Someone else picked SOW for class because they used it in homeschooling. If you don't know, or don't care, about history, and want to breeze from one snippet to another, this may be for you. Otherwise, think about other choices.
Without maps or pictures, this book is like a self-published typescript, truly "dumbed down."
Looking through the juvenile sections of the library I find so many up to date history books, with maps, pictures, material from original sources, and well written text (without the "!" gaa-gaa style of SOW). The time could be better spent.
I am not a fan of textbooks. The current ones are beautiful and have all the CDs, tests, and everything with them, but they are very expensive and grow tiresome, flogging the same format and style throughout, without the passion or enthusiasm authors of topic books bring.
If you are a home schooler, go to the library. Do a survey, make up a list and a timeline. Then begin. If you are in a school, and have a teacher who likes (or even doesn't loathe) history, please don't make them waste time with this.
I do, by the way, have a classical education, not Christian, but classical, with all those dead white guys, languages, and museums, even travel. SOW does make some attempt to balance American dn European with material from other countries, but it never ties together. There is no "encounter" or sense of how this fits together, of the sameness and difference. It's just sort of "told."
Although I'm weaker in non-Western stuff, I did that as well, and read my share of Japanese, Indian, Chinese, and middle eastern history, philosophy, and literature. Have a go at it. Trust yourself and the kids to think.
Super History.......2007-02-11
This is my first year using the Story of the World curriculum, I home school my two children, ages 9 & 12. The CD's are great in the car, or while doing the coloring pages from the activity book, which I highly recommend to go with the CD's or the text book. The material is probably geared for grades 2-6. I have also seen and heard the author, Susan Wise Bauer, speak and admire her education philosophy immensely.
Listen and Learn.......2005-03-28
This is read by Jim Weiss instead of Barbara Johnson. In my mind, this is neither positive nor negative- I love them both. Jim is wonderful, and the material is perfect for him. Barbara did a spectacular job on the first two cd sets and we love her too.
I can't review the books, as I chose to buy the cds instead. So any review of the material would best be found in the book reviews. Anyone worried about appropriatness, or looking to find what subjects are covered would be advised to check the various book reviews.
My kids love all three of these cd sets. We listen to them in the car, and we are all learning more history than I was ever taught in school. And, it's more fun. These may just be a taste of everything, but it's well planned and well put together. This will form a wonderful framework for filling in as the childrem get older. And, sad to say, but it's the truth- if this is all the history and child gets, they will still be far ahead of the majority of children taught in the US. Which, is a very serious statement- this is history at a level a 6 year older can relate to. And, we as adults have, for the most part, not even been taught most of this. The material is not dumbed down, but it is age appropriate (I'd say 6 on up, because as an adult, I still find it fascinating). The gore is minimized (but not completely glossed over) and there is nothing sexual. Let's just say that sex as a motivation will be one of the blanks they can fill in later.
I love the cd format because it is fun for the whole family, and makes driving more pleasant. The kids beg to hear this (all 3 of the sets) and we are all amused and learning at the same time.

Crackle glass has become popular in the field of twentieth-century glass collecting. Taking its name from the crackle-like appearance of the glass, a finish caused by dipping the hot piece of hand-blown glass into cooling water, the majority of this highly collectible glass was made by West Virginian companies such as Blenko, Pilgrim, and Rainbow, and Depression Era companies Tiffin, Morgantown, and Duncan. This volume showcases more than 400 color photos of crackle glass along with company catalog pages, manufacturers' information, an essay on glass blowing, detailed captions, an up-to-date price guide, bibliography, and index. The perfect reference guide for those who lack the time or experience, but want to make the most of their garden. With 150 four-color photographs throughout, separate sections on roses, annuals, perennials, bulbs, vegetable and herb gardens, shrubs, a special calendar to use as a guide for planting, as well as tips on equipment, this book is an invaluable, one-volume reference.
Customer Reviews:
not worth the money.......2001-12-20
I've read lots of better gardening books and would not give this one any stars. This book makes a few worthwhile recommendations, but spends an inordinate amount of space and photos on non-lazy plants (e.g., roses), saying they are worth the extra work. Lazy gardeners are not looking for extra work! The text also highlights plants that are not pictured, and shows photos of plants not mentioned. There are also lots of annoying typos and bad sentence construction which is extremely annoying.
Tips For The Lazy Gardener.......2001-05-20
I read this book because there is no connection between me and person with a green thumb or an avid gardener.
Atha includes a calendar to advise you when to prepare and then when to actually plant. I learned the hard way that not all seeds and plants have the information attached to them so you know when and where to plant as well as how to take care of. There are countless time and money saving tips that make it easier to grow herbs and vegetables, roses, annuals, bulbs and even shrubs. Also included are tips on what equipment to use the first time instead of changing until you find the right one. It proves to be so much easier to start with the right equipment which allows you to save time.
With over 150 color photographs Atha makes it impossible for someone not to be able to think and act like a gardener even if they don't claim to be a gardener. You can see or read while you actually plant as the book is compact to carry around.
This book is a definite read for every gardener and especially the want to be gardeners out there.

Don't You Know It's 40 Below? is a Memoir, a Social History, and a Tribute. It is an autobiography and an endearing tale of the author's experiences in an immigrant family in Saskatchewan, Canada. With clarity and freshness, it delightfully shares the joys, lessons, and struggles of his early life from the early 1930s through the middle part of the 20th century.

Great Read!.......2001-01-30
"Don't you know it's forty below?" asked a frustrated Louis Katz of his son Jack. That same question may well have been asked by many anxious parents in the small South Dakota town where my parents grew up. Kate's story of daily life on the Canadian prairie, while specific to his own unique experience, triggers memories of childhood pleasures, adolescent adventures and social situations common to small town life. Warm and witty, Don't You Know It's Forty Below? is a book you will enjoy, don't you know?
A Delightful Book ........2000-11-30
This book is a great read for all ages. It takes you back in time when things were less hectic and tells the story of a Jewish family in Canada living in a very small town. It is good insight to how difficult the 30's and 40's could be with a great sense of humor as to how this family copes with day to day living in a place where more often than not it was "40 Below". I would recommend it be a part of anyone's book collection.
