Book Description
Many complex molecular interactions are involved in the development of the mammalian brain. Molecules serving as guidance cues for migratory cells, growing axons and for recognition of postsynaptic targets are a major topic for research because they are directly involved in the formation of neuronal circuits, thus creating the foundation for subsequent functional refinement through interactions with the environment. In addition, most guidance cue molecules are also involved in plasticity, damage repair and regeneration in the adult brain.
This volume reviews current knowledge on major classes of molecules involved in: guidance of growing axons; tau proteins involved in the establishment of axonal polarity, outgrowth and contact recognition; gangliosides and lectins involved in neuronal migration, neurite outgrowth and contact recognition; and myelin molecules that inhibit nerve regeneration.

Book Description
This book considers in detail mechanisms underlying nerve growth and guidance. There is considerable coverage of intracellular second messenger involvement, both in guiding growth and collapse of growth cones. A novel feature of this collection is the inclusion of two chapters dealing with the effects of endogenous and applied physiological electric fields in guiding nerve growth. This is a deliberate strategy to lay this information side-by-side with the better established mechanisms of nerve guidance, to encourage comparisons. This book reviews progress in selected areas of this rapidly expanding field and will be of use to all those interested in developmental neurobiology in general, and nerve guidance in particular, from senior undergraduate level through to research levels.

Too easy.......2007-04-10
This book might be better than nothing or it might do the trick if you don't care whether you make the most of your trip or you're on a directed tour and don't have any choices as to what to see or where to go. Better choices are available from Lonely Planet, Rick Steves, Cadogan, Michelin and National Geographic Traveler.
Make the Most of Your Trip.......2005-12-31
I prefer guidebooks that aren't just mammoth listings of everything (hotels, restaurants, sights). This compact book hits the target with its highlights and its walking tours.
The directions are in red, interspersed with commentary in black print. The notes give relevance to much that you would unknowingly pass by. Boxed in red are DETOURS (interesting museum or cafe close to the walking tour), SHOPPING TIPS AND ENTERTAINMENT TIPS.
This covers 35 towns in Provence, 10 in the Marseille/coast area, 24 for the Western French Riviers, and 9 for the Eastern French Riviera.
I wish I'd had this on my first visit to Provence and the French Riviera. This time, I won't miss so much.
Surprising gem of a guide book.......2005-11-14
This guide book was a last-minute impulse buy before we headed off on our 10 day trip to France. We surprised ourselves by using it almost exclusively to navigate around this wonderful region of France. Short 'n sweet descriptions of all noteworthy towns in the region helped tremendously with deciding where to head next. We used the walking tours in Aix-En-Provence, Avignon, and Arles, and felt them invaluble in getting the most out of our time in each city on our brief trip. We also visited many of the tiny scenic villages recommended in the book. "Provence Made Easy" is accurate, well-written, concise, and fun to read. (Fits in your pocket!) We also had Lonely Planet Provence with us and ended up using it almost exclusively (and seldom) for accommodation and restaurant information. For trip shaping, this small, handy book was it. We used this book in conjunction with "Walking In Provence" by Janette Norton and felt that together these two books offered us a unique, authentic view of the region. We wished we had Andy's book "Paris Made Easy" when we arrived there for the last two days of our trip! Thanks, Andy!

Activities for teachers to use in their unit on Greece.......2005-02-18
When I was in the sixth grade we moved twice, and in all three of the schools from New Jersey to Connecticut to Japan I got to study Ancient Greece in the history part of the class. I also got a lot of mileage out of having read Edith Hamilton's "Mythology" (I still have my mythology report with my versions of all of the illustrations). But in all the times I got to study Ancient Greece before, during, and after the sixth grade I never got to do any of the fun stuff that Avery Hart & Paul Mantell come up with for "Ancient Greece!: 40 Hands-On Activities to Experience This Wondrous Age."
This Kaleidoscope Kids volume for kids ages 7-12 not only offers activities but also a variety of information about the Ancient Greeks. So this is not simply a book of activities that teachers can pick and choose from to give their students hands-on experiences, it is also a source of facts and stories that will supplement what exists in whatever textbook is being used. Throughout the book there are "Great Greeks!" and things to "Think About." After reminding young readers of the gifts that have come down to us from Ancient Greece, Hart and Mantell get students acclimated to the idea of looking at the past from the perspective of those who lived way back when. Then the book looks at key periods of Greek history.
"Meet the Minoans: The Pre-Greeks of Crete" looks at the culture that gave rise to the greatness of Greece with activities to make a Greek yo-yo, a Great Mother figure, a Hamster Labyrinth (without the Minotaur), and a fantastic fresco. That gives you an indication of the sort of activities to be found in this book before we even get to Greece itself. Other chapters are devoted to "The Age of Heroes," where you get a super-short version of "The Iliad" and can build a Trojan Horse, "Language Unites!" (including speaking "Pig Greek"), "The Dawn of a Golden Age," where you can organize a pentathlon and make a victory wreath, and "Ye Gods! Greek Religion and Mythology," where you can design your own constellation.
In the last part of the book chapters cover "Classical Athens: The Flower of Ancient Civilization," where you get to build a Greek Temple with Ionic columns (or even build the entire Parthenon), "Think For Yourself: Philosophy," where students can make a monochord or hold a symposium, and "The Amazing Arts," which covers create sculptures and painting pots in the first part and making masks to make up a Greek play in the second part. The final chapter covers "A Wider World: Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic Age," where you can start a library. At the end, students can appreciate how being a Greek meant standing in the center of the world (as least, as far as the Ancient Greeks were concerned).
Again, there are some key issues to be discussed to go along with the activities. Students can debate what is the difference between a hero and a celebrity, understand why every vote counts in a democracy, and decide what makes somebody beautiful. Learning how to press olives or how huge blocks of marble were transported across the sea, gives students an appreciation for how things were different way back when. Throughout the book Hart and Mantell show how ancient ideas live on in modern traditions, which remains the biggest legacy of the Ancient Greeks.
I teach Classical Greek & Roman Mythology (not to be confused with Modern Greek & Roman Mythology apparently) but I teach it online so I do not really have any opportunities to have my students engage in hands-on activities. But that does not mean I cannot do them in the privacy of my own home or that elementary school teachers will not find these extremely useful for their unit on Ancient Greece. Although I am suddenly reminded of coming up with the "Sparthens" (a.k.a. the warriors with the brains) in elementary school. But that is another story.

Clip Art,More, and Even More Clip Art for the Liturgical year.......2002-05-29
I have used the liturgical clip art books from Liturgical Press for more than ten years. They are fabulous, clear, and cover a broad range of seasonal liturgical needs. The art items are presented in a variety of combinations and sizes, so if you don't have a copier that reduces, it helps. These volumes and also those by Placid Stuckenschneider are among th best any where commercially available.

The Bible of Cat Care.......2007-03-01
The title says it all. If you're not a vet, this is the next best thing, to help you know what to ask your vet when your cat has problems. Also is great for minor aliments and first aid.
Always an Important Book.......2007-02-23
This copy I bought for our local non for profit shelter. I have purchased at least 10 copies of this book. It is written in a matter that both the professional and the pet owner can understand. It proofs to be most valuable for a cat owner. Educates and helps the cat owner understand both health, anatomy and illness in a cat. Also, valuable when you bring your cat home to understand "just what did the vet say?"
A must-have source to start with.......2007-02-12
I disagree with readers who say that the book is too general or out-of-date. It's a BOOK, not an article in a scientific journal.
That said, I also disagree with readers who say that it's too complicated. I believe that it's an important book for any responsible cat owner to have on the shelf. If you're worried but aren't sure whether something is an emergency or not, you can check here before making a midnight call to the vet or racing to the emergency clinic. If your vet tells you that a condition is suspected or diagnosed, it's a great reference to start to learn more about it, or to help you formulate questions for your vet. No, it's not a replacement for a visit to a vet, but it's a help.
Remember how every new parent read Dr. Spock's book 40 years ago? Well, I see this in the same light. A MUST for cat owners that provides information, helps allay fears, and guides you. If you have a serious question, it gives you the right technical terms to do more research. If you don't remember all of the details that you heard at the vet's, you can use it as a refresher.
Indispensable........2004-06-20
"A cat is only technically an animal, being divine." - Robert Lynd.
"The twenty-first century may be the century of the cat," says Franklin M. Loew, former Dean of Cornell University's renowned College of Veterinary Medicine in this book's preface, citing statistics according to which even at the end of the 20th century, the number of cats in the United States alone already equaled that of the entire human population of Europe (and with sinking birth rates among humans, it is not hard to guess where that particular trend is headed in the near and midterm future).
Authored by the staff of Cornell's Feline Health Center, "The Cornell Book of Cats" is an indispensable reference guide for every cat owner who cares about his or her feline companion(s). The book provides detailed coverage on every aspect of feline life, from the cats' origin and breeds to cat (mis-)behavior, nutrition, anatomy, reproduction and all major instances of disease and infirmity. Particular attention is given to kittens, aging cats, skin and sensory disorders, internal disorders and medical emergencies. While the explanations do rely on a number of medical/veterinary terms, they are generally clear, comprehensive and easy to understand; in addition, most of the veterinary terminology is defined in a 22-page glossary at the end of the book. Numerous figures, tables, sketches, statistics and photos further illustrate the text; and treatment suggestions are provided for all diseases and disorders described. As the authors point out, this book is *not* intended to make a visit to the vet unnecessary in each and every instance (and sometimes, the remedies suggested here are only the beginning of the path to complete treatment) - but the book does help a cat owner determine when the often not inconsiderable expense of a visit to the vet is truly warranted. Moreover, it is a tremendous supplementary resource to even the best vet's recommendations, and it provides a wealth of background information on our four-pawed friends. Highly recommended.
"A house without a cat, and a well-fed, well-petted and properly revered cat, may be perfect house, perhaps, but how can it prove its title?" - Mark Twain.
More of a reference book for a vet.......2004-02-03
I just purchased this book and was disappointed. It is really more for a reference book that a vet might have or if your cat has already been diagnosed, you could look up the diseases to get a bit more of an understanding. If you are looking for a book on how to treat and understand your sick cat, this is not the book for you.
For instance, there is one reference if you try to look up HAIRBALL, and it tells you nothing...no information you could actually use. Basically, it's a dictionary and nothing more.
I do not recommend this book.

Book Description
This tribute to Charles J. Adams from colleagues and students includes essays on numerous aspects of Islamic civilization, beginning with early Islam down to the modern period. The Qur'an receives the attention of five authors: Andrew Rippin focuses on references to the pre-Islamic Hanifs, while Issa Boullata traces poetic citation in Qur'anic exegesis. Sulami's commentary is discussed by Gerhard Bowering, and Hallaq draws attention to the unique place the Qur'an occupied in Shatibi's legal theory. Finally, W.C. Smith looks at the Qur'an from a comparativist perspective. Ulrich Haarmann and Donald P. Little deal, respectively, with the attitudes of medieval Egyptians towards the Pyramids, and the nature of Sufi institutions under the Mamluks. Mehdi Mohaghegh, Hasan Murad and Paul Walker treat philosophical and theological issues, while Eric Ormsby analyzes the structure of experience in Ghazali. Sajida Alvi explores the religious writings of the eighteenth-century Indian scholar Panipati, and Uner Turgay examines Circassian immigration to the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century. Orthodoxy and aberrancy in the Ithna 'Ashari tradition is the subject of Savory's article, and the notion of literature in Arab and Islamic culture is treated by Wickens. Finally, Bernard Weiss compares Islamic and Western conceptions of law.

Book Description
As printing and design technologies have evolved over the past decade, so too have designers’ approaches to type design and typography. Today’s innovative designers have overturned established rules about type, turning letters into images and using typefaces in increasingly experimental ways. New Typographic Design covers a wide variety of applications from design for print--ranging from books, magazines, and brochures--to signage systems and screen-based typography, presenting the most current trends and directions of modern typography.
The book’s introduction discusses changing attitudes to innovation in typography through the 19th and 20th centuries, including the changing role of the designer, the question of legibility versus form, how type has become image, and the differing requirements for screen-based and print-based type. Four accompanying sections illustrate the key areas of typography today: type as form (how can existing type be handled in order to create an original design?), type as image (designs inspired by vernacular typography and noted for their hand-drawn aesthetic), type as experiment (the work of designers who push the boundaries of typographic recognition and legibility), and type in motion (how type can function in a three-dimensional or screen-based environment).
Authored by esteemed designer Roger Fawcett-Tang, this lavishly illustrated volume will provide a rich source of inspiration for both practicing designers and students.

Professional Logo Design.......2000-06-23
Designing a companies logo means more than just giving more color and funny fonts to the companies name. Designing a logo combines the corporate identy and philosophy to a new brand. It is now use in copying different logos, no new sign will be created and the logo looks like a dozen of other brands. This book perfectly shows the need for clear and professional typographic logos. Typographic logos have not to look boring or the same like other logos. Gerry Rosentswieg book is a short but excellent introduction to the new American logo style.
