Book Description
For this smart, cheerful little book, Fodor's parent-experts have hand-picked
68 terrific things to do around London with a child in tow from the London Zoo the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Written by parents who live in London, this book is smart about what kids like and about what parents need. It includes all the
details for planning (addresses, phone numbers, admission prices, and age-appropriateness); "Hey Kids!" info boxes filled with
fun facts; ideas for
places to grab a bite to eat nearby; and a cool
"Games" section that will keep everyone happily occupied while waiting in line.
Designed to lure even the crankiest young tourists to sites of interest...with a nod toward grown-up sensibilities, too." -- Good Housekeeping
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Ideas .......2006-02-19
I really loved this book for ideas on places to take your kids in London and the information provided for each site was outstanding. For example #41: Legoland, lets you know exactly how to get there whether you take a train or bus and helpful tips on how to get the most of of the experience. This book relates much more details and relevant info than the "For Kids" sections of regular travel books. Those travel books are still a "must have" but this book makes a good companion to cover all your bases. The only problem I had with this book was that most of the pricing info and some operational hours were not up-to-date and incorrect. As long as you keep in mind that this book refelects 2004 data, you are good to go. I also did not agree with some of their restaurant recommendations, but that is strictly a matter of taste so I didn't deduct any points. In any case, this book provides invaluable advise if you are traveling with kids. Each section is well thought out and answers most questions you might have while traveling. Why didn't anyone think of this earlier? We traveled to Germany two years ago and really could of used a book like this to make our trip less stressful in the planning stages.
Great book when planning your trip.......2004-06-14
This book is great when planning out trip to London. They give great info (tube stop, hours, cost, places to eat, etc) but they also gave age information. They told you the ages each place was appropriate for and things to think about before going there.
The only book my daughter will read.......2003-11-07
We are planning a trip to London and I bought a couple of books for my daughter and me to plan our trip. This one, however, is the only one she'll look at. The quick snipits about the cool stuff and the ideas for what to look out for have captured her attention. We love the places to eat close to the attractions, too.
A winner!
Terrific addition to guide books.......2002-11-09
With so many competing guide books on the market, especially to popular destinations like London, product differentiation appealing to different sectors of the market is necessary to stay in the race.
This is in the same series as Fodor's Around Paris With Kids, and is a welcome foray into this market from a travel guide publisher long though to be the exclusive preserve of the well-heeled and unadventurous traveller.
This book is a handy accompaniement to a visit to London for anyone with children.
The information is useful, the size is wholly convenient. Nothing glossy, no photos, no pictures at all. I have borrowed all the glossy stuff from the library to read ahead of time, and anything useful have put as margin notes in THIS book, because this is the one I plan to have along. It tells you how to get to each place, opening hours, what to see and do there. Includes information on attractions especially for kids, as well as all the conventional tourist sites, museums etc, emphasising the aspects that are most likely to appeal to kids.
If you are a first-time visitor to London you may feel more comfortable having a good, conventional guide book along as well, but if you don't need the basics AND you have children along with you, I reckon you'll want to have this book above all others.
Customer Reviews:
Robert A. Wilson for President.......2005-11-30
The title: Sex, Drugs & Magick, sure is eye-catching. Not only that, but the book is written by none other than Robert Anton Wilson, known for writing interesting things about controversial topics. And on top of that, the publisher is New Falcon Publications, known for its desire to publish books that really has something to say.
The original title of the book (and its first edition name) was Sex, Drugs, and the Occult, and these are the topics dealt with. Now "occult", however, has been changed into "magick", since Wilson is of the opinion that the word "occult" never really fit the rest of the book.
But, the title is still somewhat misleading, if you ask me. Wilson himself says he focuses on the combination sex and drugs; different drugs, taken during different circumstances, and how these can affect - for better or worse - any sexual stimulation.
And sure, in the beginning this is indeed what the book is all about. But, when looked at from a larger perspective one get the feeling that it's really a story about different drugs and how they affect the way the user relates to world around him or her. Most of the time the sex is there, in one way or another, but the book is not only about sex and drugs.
But I don't think that matters very much. Wilson has, as always, created something great, and I sure had a good time reading it. And it's arranged in quite an interesting way: every other chapter is called an interlude, where Wilson offers very interesting portraits of people he's met during his long and fascinating life, the different drugs these people used, and how the drugs came to affect their lives. In between these interludes you'll find purely non-fictional essays, and the combination of the non-fiction with something subjective descriptive works perfectly.
It's important to point out, however, that it's not a book arguing for the legalization of all drugs known to man. It's written for responsible adults, and Wilson, while never hesitating in admitting how he's tested most drugs out there, is still keen to make sure to the reader that drugs are drugs; dangerous substances that easily can be abused, overdosed, and result in both physical and psychical suffering and death. He's not saying you should try them, but he's also not saying you shouldn't: the use of a drug does not equal abuse of a drug. He's simply trying to be neutral, and chooses to focus on descriptions, instead debating whether or not they should made legal.
All in all the book is just as good as I thought it would be. Just as the title says, if you read it you'll learn a lot about sex, drugs, and magick, and I have no choice but to recommend it to you.
And, it can be quite interesting having it around when your fiends are coming over. The title will definitely get a lot of attention.

Robert Anton Wilson Wrote the Review!!!.......2004-08-31
while the book is almost solid gold, there had to be some room for the paper, hence 4 stars. But I have found out through numerous sources within the Very DISCORDIAN MOVEMENT ITSELF! that R.A.W. Wrote the one star "Take Drugs to Achieve Enlightenment!" Review. I hear they're planning to include it in a PBS retrospective, as an aside for his long career, that has ended in his tragic death from Pancreatic cancer.
Sex and Drugs: A Journey Beyond Limits.......2003-06-13
This book takes a rather interesting point of view that will not sit well with those who do not think... To do the quality and type of work pointed out here is well beyond the capabilities of the average. Instead of believing what the media shamans tell you or the scientistic-priests ( you know, the so-called credible scientists that tell the world with a straight face that they know, a priori, that anything beyond their personal experience cannot possibly be true... ), an intelligent reviewer might find themselves practicing sex, pranyama and the ingestion of THC while keeping strict and accurate journals that may be peer reviewed.
As an aside, WHO THE ... CAN TELL ANOTHER WHAT ENLIGHTENMENT IS? Wilson points at "Higher Consciousness", if you will forgive the play on words there, but does not preach WHAT it will be for anyone. Hmmm... Seems strange that people seeking enlightenment still sound as if they KNOW what it IS. Some reviewers crack me up.
Errors not withstanding a very good book........2002-10-03
It is not suprising to me that this is so good. Robert Anton Wilson's work in general is excellent: informative and entertaining.
To the Individual that posted the "of course" attack. Don't be so dogmatic and close minded. If so many people through out history have found these techniques and substances useful, maybe there is something to it

Celtic Frames and Borders CD-ROM by Mallory Pearce.......2007-02-11
Book has been enjoyed by my husband. The book was in excellent condition.
Disappointing.......2003-12-08
The images in this production are to Celtic illustration what imitation crab meat is to the real thing. Sad to say the quality of the images are just a couple of steps above cartoon art. Also disappointing is the fact that the images were scanned at 300 x 300 dpi. In this day and age, when many printers are cranking out 2,500 dpi, this low level of scanning leaves a lot to be desired. I have purchased other Dover products in the past and have been very pleased. The purchase of this book is one I regret.
Book Description
Unusual collection features eye-catching letters of the alphabet incorporating a variety of traditional Celtic images. Woven into intricate patterns are half-human, mythical figures, florals, animal life; and highly stylized serpentine motifs. An immensely useful set for artists, craftworkers, and anyone wanting to add a distinctive touch to their graphic projects. 307 color illustrations.

The Marraige of Industry and Design.......2005-12-22
This book was published as a catalogue for a 1991 show at the American Craft Museum. The show's purpose was to look at Craft in the United States from 1920-1945. This was an exciting period when American industrial designers took many of the emerging ideas of European Modernism and gave these new theories a unique American character. This age known variously as Depression Modern, Streamline, Art Moderne and Art Deco.
What makes this book interesting is that it focuses on craft. There are chapters on wood working, metal working, glass blowing, ceramics and textiles. As would be expected, this book covers the iconic works of the masters such as Teague, Deskey, Rhode and Wright. But there are also a number of less well known craftmen of the period. It is these more obscure figures that make this book compelling. Their contributions illustrate that fact that this was a movement as oppossed to the exceptional works of a few remarkable craftsmen.
"Craft in the Machine Age" is filled with numerous photographs and has chapters on the different crafts written by museum curators and academics. As you would expect, it is a well made professional catalogue of a major art exhibition. This book is a must purchase for enthusiasts of American material culture in the years between the two World Wars. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Sir Roy Strong and his wife, the designer Julia Trevelyan Oman, have lived in the country for nearly thirty years. In 1987 he was asked to write an occasional column reflecting this quintessentially English way of life for the prestigious magazine A Country Life. This charming book brings these popular pieces together, portraying the passing of the seasons in what the author describes as his ‘beloved adopted county’ of Herefordshire.
A Country Life is a wide-ranging kaleidoscope of memories and observations, embracing the countryside, gardens, cooking, and remembrances of things both long gone and only yesterday. The author writes lyrically of the arrival of the bright green tarragon shoots in spring; of the delights of eating al fresco; of making sorbets from blackberry and quince; of the russet beech hedges in winter and the sweet nostalgia that comes from unpacking Christmas decorations.
The keynote of A Country Life is delight – a portrait of life in the English countryside, which seems as old as time itself.
Customer Reviews:
A gentle country life.......1999-12-13
First published in Britain in 1994 A Country Life is a collection of the authors personal memories and experiences a number of which appeared as regular column pieces in Country Life magazine between 1989 and 1994.
Following the seasons it is a glorious portrait of the rural way of life of Roy Strong former Director of the V&A and his wife Julia Trevelyan Oman who provides the delightful pen and ink illustrations.
The scene is set by an essay Strong wrote for Hortus in 1992 in which he describes their house The Laskett in Herefordshire.

Book Description
Strong in the Struggle tells the powerful story of the political awakening of Lee Brown-an African American labor activist and a leader of an interracial union of waterfront workers in New Orleans-as a youth from the rural South, his life from childhood among poor black farmers, his encounters with the Jim Crow system of racial segregation and racial violence, his discovery of the changes that could be won when working people organized into unions, his rise to leadership and his time of imprisonment, and his continuing advocacy of the ideals of racial equality and socialism. History of black labor movement in America.......2007-09-15
_Strong In The Struggle_ chronicles the life and activities of Lee Brown, black labor activist. His interest in unions started with a railroad job in Arizona, where worker solidarity reinstated a worker who had been fired unfairly. On returning to Louisiana, he became a labor leader for the dockworkers there.
He strongly felt that a fairer society required three things: increased trade unionism, racial integration, and Communism. Of course, back then that got him no end of trouble with racists and Red-baiters of all stripes. (He did end up in prison for three years for violating the Taft-Hartley act, which prohibited members of the Communist party from involvement with labor unions). However, later he expressed frustration because of racism and apathy in the union ranks, as well as a Communist party that had become more "intellectual" and theoretical than "involved with the grass roots".
Co-author Robert L. Allen documents the famous trial in which Mr. Brown refuses to answer the prosecutors' questions.
Recommended for anyone interested in labor or African-American history.
