Book Description
Carved out, at the close of the eighteenth century, of some of the thickest woods and foulest swamps north of Georgia, the glorious city of Washington D.C., is among America's most stately, most beautiful, and most impressive. Indeed, once maligned by Charles Dickens as simply "spacious avenues that begin in nothing and lead nowhere; streets a mile long that only want houses, roads, and inhabitants; public buildings that need but a public to be complete, " Washington, D.C. today is a powerful symbol not only of our nation but of democracy.
Spanning the Potomac in majestic fashion, the city fans out gracefully, offering a multitude of pleasures to the more than twenty million tourists who visit annually. From official Washington (the imposing Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the White House, the Capitol, the souring obelisk of the Washington Monument) to its lush public parks and gardens; from Union Station to Ford's Theater; the Willard Hotel to the Library of Congress to the fabled Belgian Embassy; the charm of its celebrated Cherry Blossom Festival to the somber beauty of the Vietnam Wall; from the delightful Easter egg roll to the profoundly moving Holocaust Museum—Washington D.C., A Photographic Tour manages to convey all the grandeur of the nation's capital while reminding us that this splendor belongs, of course, to all who prize democracy.

4.5 Stars.......2006-12-30
Nice book of this type depicting Washington DC. This one is better than most because the pictures are large and there's some unique perspectives. The only downside is there are so many books of this type it's hard to tell them apart. I've seen other works by this pair and they always do a nice job displaying their subject.
The best way to remember your Washington, D.C. visit.......2000-05-09
I have visited Washington, D.C. several times, by myself and with my family. This book has the best photographic coverage of Washington in one cover that I have seen. The captions for the photographs are accurate and helpful. If you go on the Washington by Dark bus tours, this book is better than the photos most of us take for the monuments. You can save your film for pictures of your friends or family at the sites during the day. Additionally, the preface history of Washington is interesting and concise. I heartily recommend this photo essay to any Washington, D.C. visitor.

So You Thought You Knew Your History.......2006-02-25
This is one of the better college texts for American history. The information is straight forward compared to the full text version, and no information is missed between its big brother. The second half highlights from 1865 onward into the 21st century. I would highly reccomend this book for students taking a introductory course in college or AP American History in high school.
Great Overview!.......2005-09-27
This book gives a great overview of the social aspects of U.S. History since 1865. It was rather refreshing to read a history book that was not so narrowly focused on the death and carnage of war in this nation. The wars are discussed, of course, in relative detail, but more weight is placed on how they affected our nation's citizens and society as a whole. The photographs and illustrations were fantastic in revealing how life truly was at a time we often have a hard time imagining, let alone comprehending these days. In addition, I found it really helpful in learning the information and doing well on my exams!
Worst History Book Of All.......2005-09-06
This has got to be the worst and boring history book of all. Throughout my entire years in school reading history book this has to be the worst. It gets so boring you can't even read it if you try. If you did read it, chances are you did not understand them 10 pages. Combining with a horrible professor and book it's going to be one long semester for me.
very left wing bias.......2004-06-04
dont waste your time with this guy. I don't know where he gets his info. My son has one of Mr. Nash's textbooks for history and I have never seen so much left wing bias, especially in a textbook.
Do your own research.......2004-01-09
It's amazing to me to read reviews of people who tout this book as "liberal propaganda" when it merely tells the truth about history. If you wanted the whitewashed version of history we were taught in high school, where Christopher Columbus had pure motives in the new world and didn't rape or enslave the native population, where the Native Americans were savages who were domesticated by the pilgrims who so graciously shared a Thanksgiving feast with them, where Woodrow Wilson's racism and hatred of women isn't mentioned...why did you bother taking a college history course, or bother going to college for that matter, at all? Pull your heads out of the sand! If you truly believe this book is socialist propaganda, I recommend you start doing your own research of America's past without using any high school or college textbook as a source of information - you'll find that this particular textbook has one of the truest pictures of American history available.

Some Outdated Information, but Some Good Information too........2005-05-06
This book is obviously dated as it was written back when wild caught birds were available due to the fact that domestic raised birds were difficult to find. Annette, therefore gives information on taming a frightened bird instead of on a new baby African Grey Parrot loving to be cuddled.
She provides good information on the need for proper sized cages & play areas as well as information on making your bird's own climbing structure.
She has listed a good selection of foods to feed your bird, although there is no mention of a pelleted diet, which has now become a good basic staple in many birds' diets.
She has a section on diseases & how to keep your bird healthy with good information for you to follow.
The section on Understanding African Gray Parrots is very thorough and informative. This section, combined with the good information in several of the other sections, outweigh the dated information in a couple of the other sections of the book.
Annette Wolter, African Grey Parrots.......2001-09-27
The publications (books) will be rated as soon as I have read them 2 times. However I would like to write an ordinary paper for publication in a well recommended international journal.
Can you recommend one? Or shall I surch for it myself?
The topic should include: How to bye an African Grey. Do not mix up parrots and dogs. Dogs, the humans establiched contact with 14.000 B.C. (Boessneck, 1985). Coresponding time for parrots is 200 years. Education of dogs is based on punischment/reward. That does not work on parrots. The parrot indetifies the punisher as a hawk or an other kind of predator.
Just a first idea of the content for a short publication from a beginner i this "field of science". Time for sending the paper to referees approx, April-01.
I am a professor in metallurgy since 1983 (metals forming) and have written written other kinds of articles outside my professional discipline( Fish for aquarium, "Tropheus" from the lake of Tanganyika in Africa)
So I am not a beginner in writing

OUT OF DATE INFOMATION!!.......2001-07-02
This book has some good info if you dig really deep and know what you are looking for. It talks about things to do to your AG that are out of date, and could be bad to your birds health. It also speaks of taking the birds out of the jungle, which does not happen very much any more, if at all. If you want a good book about african greys, look at the copyright date, it says a lot.
Good book, BUT.............2000-09-14
I found that there was a lot of good information in this book, HOWEVER, the author speaks about the bird being "captured from the jungle" and brought into a domestic situation. I CAN NOT stress how much that this is the absolute WRONG way to obtain ANY bird. When purchasing African Grey's (and any other animal for that matter) make absolute CERTAIN that it came from a domesticated breeder, and NOT from the wilderness.
looking for this book in spanish.......1999-06-18
if you could direct me in the area of a author who writes about the african gray parrot in spanish, version i would be most thnkful

Book Description
Travel to the pueblos of Arizona and New Mexico and meet 102 families that make beautiful, traditional pottery. Meet the potters face to face in beautiful color photographs of them with their work, and enjoy interviews with the artists, branches of 43 family trees. Seventeen pueblos along the Rio Grande and in the rising mesas and bluffs to river's west, have a long tradition of making pottery vessels for practical and ceremonial use. This book introduces 554 modern potters in relation to the family members with whom they learned their craft. New forms and designs are displayed to demonstrate the evolving nature of their art.
Customer Reviews:
Pueblo Pottery Families.......2007-05-13
The book provided insight into the relationships of the potters on the different pueblos. We like the book. It is inexpensive. We will have it available when we visit the different pueblos.
A Disappointment.......2003-02-03
Unfortunately, this book promises a lot more than it delivers. For example, in its preface, it mentions several families of potters at Acoma named Lewis not related to Lucy Lewis, but they are not even mentioned. Even the section on the family of Lucy Lewis is barely 2 pages. The author for the most part barely skims the surface. I desperately wanted to like this book, but the more I read it, the more I saw was lacking. For one thing, it seriously needed a much better editor. It reads like a grade school student's social studies report, and it is filled with typos, the worst being that many of the photo captions are wrong because the photos were flipped and the captions were not corrected. A major disappointment for the price. Fortunately I bought it in paperback! It did have some good information, but it could have and should have had much more.
An EXCELLENT resource for those interested in pottery........1999-01-04
This book is an excellent resource if you are interested in collecting pottery from all peublos as well as a variety of families. Although not quite as in depth as Rick Dillingmham's Fourteen Families, she does mention many families that he does not.
Book Description
Garden photographer Janet Loughrey has covered the vast Adirondacks region to document how people have overcome the area's challenging mountain climate to create beautiful gardens for the past 150 years. Her profiles of contemporary gardeners and landscapers and their creations are supplemented with fascinating historic photos of the lavish landscaping of famed Adirondack-style estates such as Nirvana and the Knapp Estate and grand old hotel resorts such as Scaroon Manor and Sagamore.
Customer Reviews:
Well done and beautiful.......2005-07-23
Very beautiful and informative. Photo's are superb. Text is a well researched and fascinating history of gardens old and new. Keen gardener's eye and knowledge is evident throughout.

Comprehensive Jewelry Book.......2006-07-22
This book will educate you concerning the history of jewelry from the 1840's through the 1950's. Excellent history, pictures, price guides for the collector and the researcher. Contains not only black/white and color photos, but hallmarks, dating clues, artists marks, glossary and much much more. Invaluable book and one of the most used in my jewelry library.
Full of Information.......2004-11-18
You might say I'm a novice when it comes to vintage jewelry. I learn as I go and every book I buy has some tidbit of excellent information. My feeling is that one can never have too many books as they become our reference guides. Jeanenne Bell did an excellent job and I refer to this book regularly. I'm glad I bought it.

Book Description
In this supplement to his celebrated series of books on the Cattleya alliance of orchids, Carl Withner joins with Patricia Harding to explore "the debatable epidendrums." Carl Linnaeus established the genus Epidendrum in 1753 to include the mostly epiphytic orchid plants being sent to him from tropical America. Over time the genus grew to include more than 1000 species of evergreen epiphytic, lithophytic, or terrestrial orchids. Some of these epidendrums were transferred to other genera. Others have yet to be divided into natural subgroups, which could be split off into their own genera. A portion of these remaining epidendrums, those with pseudobulbs, are the focus of this volume. This book is certain to be of use to hobbyists, collectors, and growers alike.
