Book Description

For horse lovers, art lovers, and collectors of unusual, beautifully illustrated books, here is the only volume on the market to offer such a large and gorgeous array of equine art. The book is divided into eight themed chapters that explore the diverse representations of horses in art: horses depicted as our trusty companions, unstinting workers, and supporters in combat. The book charts this enduring partnership, drawing on the profusion of paintings and sculptures that feature the dignified and intelligent animal that has played so many roles in human history and culture. From the small Nisean horse of the Persian Empire to the tough and speedy mounts of the Wild West, from the winged steed Pegasus to the faithful Black Beauty, humble nags take their place alongside preening thoroughbreds as the many breeds and guises of the horse are depicted. Each chapter is introduced by a short essay, and every image is accompanied by key information on the artist, the style, and the subject of the piece. Lively quotes throughout the book add the voices of writers and poets. A biographical index of artists completes the book.

5 out of 5 stars Happy I bought it........2005-07-23

This is simply a beautiful book and a must have for any horse lover. This collection of horse art is the best I've seen. It's a jewel that packs a punch and would look great in any home. This book is part of a wonderful series that includes "Zoo", "Dog", "Cat", "Sex", and "Flora". They're great as a collection!

5 out of 5 stars A great book to study for equine artists.......2001-08-03

I enjoyed examining all works of art in this book to learn some techniques used by the masters, it's also a great book for ANYBODY(artist or not) who simply loves horses. It would have been nicer if it were bigger, but otherwise it's a great coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars Another little gem.......2000-10-17

In the same format as the popular books ZOO, CAT, DOG, SEX comes another overview of art and writings from ancient times to the present. Lavishly illustrated with all forms of art dealing with the Horse, author Harrison has blended academia with whimsy and the result is a treat for art and animal lovers of all ages. This is a terrific item for a gift.....

4 out of 5 stars HEART OF TEXAS.......2007-10-14

These Frommmer guides are very good, and this one on Austin and San Antonio is no different. I am very familiar with these two cities and I find the suggestions in this guide to be on the whole very accurate. Though the hotel and restaurant sections are top loaded with the most famous and expensive, some smaller properties and resturants are not included. The sites section however is perfect, the guides descriptions and ratings are close to perfect. What I really appreciate about the Frommer guides is that you really feel like they have researched the subject, granted that should be a prerequisite in a travel guide, but unfortunitely in my experience that is not always the case.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Frommers.......2005-10-27

This is at least our 6th Frommer's book. We simply won't travel anywhere on vacation without one. Mainly we use it for restaurant recommendations to avoid the tourist traps and to find the (good) local museums, zoos, etc.

We have yet to be disappointed.

The maps are also very helpful in planning the day's out so one can get the most out of each destination.

In addition to the San Antonio & Austin guides, we have also purchased and used (in no particular order): San Francisco, Arizona, Europe, Washington DC, and France.

The best thing one can say about all of the Frommer's books is their methodical order. All of the books are essentially built upon the same template.

First they tell you how to get there (airlines, airports, trains, train stations, etc.); then where to stay. Once you're there where to eat. And now that the essentials have been taken care of they get into the attractions and shopping. Simply a wonderful easy to follow format. And physically they easily fit in any small carry case and do not weigh a ton so you can carry it around with you.

If travelling abroad (and you do not speak that country's language very well), I also recommend getting the "Jiffy Phrase Books." They give you enough to make an intelligent sentence or two, which is all it takes to gain the respect of the local merchants.

4 out of 5 stars DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS.......2007-10-11

These frommer guides are well put together, at least the writers seem to have actually visited these two cities. Im very familiar with both cities and i have to say for the tourist, Austin does not hold a candle to San Antonio..it's sort of like comparing Baton Rouge to New Orleans. I mean dont get me wrong id rather live in Austin, but if your going to these cities for fun, spend like two days in Austin, then make your way to San Antonio...fast,,,the riverwalk alone is worth spending several days. As for this guide, I like the way it's layed out and the ratings of sites is very accurate. The hotel and restaurant guides are pretty basic, but it gives you an general overview. If you have never visited this area...be sure to ride out into the Hill Country, all the German Heritage and scenic vista's is not to be missed...

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to San Antonio.......2002-12-31

I took this guide on a first time visit to San Antonio and found it invaluable. Not only was it up to date with info on the latest hotels, attractions, and restaurants, but it contains lots of asides containing interesting information on the different sites that added to our enjoyment at visiting these sites. A first rate job!

There's a danger to publishing a resource book. By the time it hits print, how many of those resources will no longer be available? Like venerable rubber stamp authorities Miller and Thompson, David Ward doesn't just offer us a catalog of catalogs, though images from dozens of rubber stamp companies make up the bulk of this book as well as a listing of stamp stores, manufacturers and suppliers. What makes this book valuable are the articles about tools and techniques, articles that will never go out of date. Sure you can get the same information in other stamping books, or probably learn them online or at your local stamping store, but the combination of articles, project ideas (with color plates of finished projects, none of which use outrageously difficult techniques or expensive materials)and a vast resource base which includes many well-established companies which will probably be around for the next X-number of years, makes this book a must-have addition to the collection of dedicated stampers. This is an idea book, a book to sit and daydream with, as well as a practical guide to the who, what and where of the art/craft of stamping.

                    Book Description

Once discovered, witch hazels capture the hearts of gardeners who rank them among the best of all winter-flowering shrubs. Shrugging off several degrees of frost and a heavy weight of snow, their distinctive flowers held on bare branches cannot fail to light up a garden in the depths of winter. Yet, despite their attributes, only a small number are widely grown outside the gardens of enthusiasts. This book promises to change all that by turning the spotlight on these magical shrubs, highlighting their diversity and providing practical, comparative information that will thrill enthusiast and newcomer alike. The book starts with an introduction to the genus followed by detailed descriptions of the four species and their hybrids. These will be of immense value to gardeners as they consider distinguishing features and work out which will perform best for them. The book further aids identification by noting how local conditions can significantly affect plant characteristics including rate of growth, size of plant, leaf retention, and flower color. Cultural requirements and hardiness tolerance are clearly outlined, further ensuring success in the garden. This is the first attempt to authenticate and describe all known selections, varieties, and species in one text. It will be an invaluable resource for gardeners and collectors for years to come.

Three stars seems too harsh, four seems a bit too generous...
This book is great as an encyclopedic listing of the numerous cultivars of witch hazel. He addresses the history of various cultivars and propagation techniques, and has a brief section on pruning (where he mentions keeping them to smaller size or training to a wall or fence for smaller gardens) which is very helpful. But unless you plan on developing a collection of several plants, this book might be better borrowed from the library (IF they have it...), because for example for my needs (one specimen to possibly 3) this book feels like a little more than I need, yet also less: he shows all the hybrids' flowers close-up, but he doesn't have many photos at all showing fall color or summer habit-- issues that are important considerations for me with a typical moderate-size suburban lot where I want to gauge placement (does summer habit preclude a prominent spot?) and get the most multi-season bang for the space it takes up. I feel a little guilty for buying this one.

                    3 out of 5 stars Scientific tome.............2005-06-30

WITCH HAZELS (Hamamelis) make good alternatives to Forsythia. These shrubs and small trees bloom in early spring, can be found in many colors and will stand up to relatively adverse conditions. Chris Lane has written a relatively scientific tome with sections on breeding, hybridizing and cultivation and a small section of color photos, but no associated illustrations with each Hamamelis types listed (you have to flip back and forth between the photos and the write-up). This book may not prove useful for beginners who prefer a picture of the plant and lengthy description. "Hands-on" experienced gardeners who can read will probably find almost everything they need to develop an interest in Hamamelis.

5 out of 5 stars Right Book at the Right Time.......2005-02-17

This book fills a gap in the literature and it arrives at a perfect time given the contemporary popularity of plants in the genus Hamamelis. The author provides an exhaustive review of witchhazels, including history, cultivars, important personalities and cultural/propagation information. His insights are derived from years of experience and reflect his true passion for these plants. Eminently readable, this book will be an asset to horticulturists of any experience level. The clear pictures and cultivar histories help sort out the nomenclature confusion that often plagues this group. No doubt this book will serve as the standard for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewers praise these dazzling, engaging poems.......1998-06-29

"Emily Hiestand, with her radical trust in description as a guide to the moral life--and her extraordinary trust in the processes of logic--works reason--kneads it, assaults it really--till it explodes once again into the magic and mystery it truly is. In Green the Witch-Hazel Wood, the breathtaking hesitancies and suddenly explosive new vantage points of the physics of our time are suddenly alive in the poetry. It crackles like some source of energy we had no idea we had lived without and now--of course--would not." --Jorie Graham

"Here is a poet with an exact and exacting intelligence which is not based on presumptions, but which arrives at its...conclusions with melodic intricacy." --Derek Walcott

"Green the Witch-Hazel Wood...is a dazzling, engaging book, wherein the chief pleasure is watching the play of Hiestand's imagination and curiosity. [This is] a bountiful group of superb poems." --Frances Mayes San Jose Mercury News, October 15, 1989

"This poet aspires to a Wallace Stevens-like palette.... The best poems experiment with scale, expanding and shrinking scenes until images achieve potency.... A sensuality, an unabashed play with language...renders her work distinctive." --Lee Upton, Belles Lettres, Spring 1990

"The remaking of nature poetry is always a challenge within a discourse. Emily Hiestand seems particularly fit for the challenge... Her poems are full of (the) correspondences and yearnings she observed in Bishop. Her line is swift, with a lovely, citric vernacular about it. I admire this in particular about her work...a powerful and gifted stylization within her wider themes; a sort of sibylline demotic. The pleasures of tone make the control in her nature poems a real mix of verve and intensity... These are wonderful gifts to find in poetry." --Eavan Boland Partisan Review, Summer 1993

"One of the most valuable things about Hiestand's poems is their vision of human life, and of its most characteristic featur! e, language, as continuous with the natural world. Here there is no romantic abyss, and no sentimentality...This first collection of poemsdeclares its attention to and affection for the natural world beginning with the title and the cover painting.... The opening epigraphs then define the tasks at hand: "If we sell you our land, you must remember that it is sacred" (Chief Seattle) and "What we admire in the green world is a benign selfhood./ And in one another, the ability to speak of this. / Or better, to act it out." (William Meredith, Dalhousie Farm ). The poems themselves take up Meredith's challenge with wit, intelligence, curiosity and obvious pleasure in the task at hand. Their attention to detail is both lavish and precise." --Sharon Bryan The Boston Review, October 1989

"Emily Hiestand's Green the Witch-Hazel Wood is a foray into logical thought, beginning with the traditional logic of the mind where the world is questioned and observed. Much of...the book is an attempt to define, and broaden, that window of reason. To do so, Hiestand examines the world under a scientist's microscope, somewhat reminiscent of Dickenson, Moore, and Bishop before her. There is a parallel logic of the senses. the dominant sense here is sight (Hiestand is also a painter) where objects are lovingly made palpable. Nouns are clean and simple--eggs and sofas and linoleum and the smell of kerosene. The known world sparkles and comes alive under her observant eye: "here is an orange that fits in the palm of your hand / with segments like maps, and sweet, and hard." Hiestand's volume was selected by Jorie Graham for the National Poetry Series, and it shows some of the same proclivity for abstraction and philosophy as Graham's own work. This is an interesting turn of mind, and I find it refreshing." --Judith Kitchen The Georgia Review, Spring Summer 1990

5 out of 5 stars Structural discoveries in the laboratory of language.......1998-06-23

These are poems that stop one's wandering mind and focus it onto an image, a detail (a rivet in a bridge, a passage from an archaic encyclopedia). And, remarkably, each detail contains an insight, a structural discovery about people, cultures, animals, or the hard material world. To be savored, and read out loud to good friends.

When Hazel is invited to the Halloween ball being given by Boris the Boor, she discovers she has "nothing to wear". After a trip to Felicity's Dress Shop, Hazel decides that she must lose some weight so that she can fit into a lovely new gown and so she goes off to the "Health Farm". After six zany days of exercise and a poor diet, Hazel is able to fit into her new dress and arrives at the Ball looking stunning. She is asked to dance by Prince Boris only to decide that she didn't go to all the trouble of losing weight for a "silly man" and promptly devours everything in sight on the buffet table! The story ends with "Gentle Reader: Accept yourself the way you are, and you'll be happier by far. Remember though, whatever you do, that exercise is good, and too much food is bad for you.

                                      Book Description

This book makes available to scholars the unpublished proto-scholastic Commentary on the Psalms, composed by one of the outstanding figures of the early twelfth century, Gilbert of Poiters (Gilbert Porreta). The commentary had its origins in the atmosphere of experimentation which characterized the schools of Laon, Chartres and Paris in the first decades of the century. Its unique mise en page, its methodology and its connection to other texts - especially glossed classical texts, the Glossa ordinaria and the writings of Peter Lombard - are explored. Gilbert's Commentary is a text critical for the understanding of the development of the discipline of theology in the twelfth century schools.
