Real Experience.......2007-08-23
I've always like Lonely Planet guides. The format of putting the country into reigions so that you can see what is near were you are going is very helpful. This particular guide is becoming dated as Romania has joined the European Union and the country is on the quick path to change. Many of the quaint traditions are giving way to western traditions. I stayed in country for 2 weeks and this was an excellent reference. My Romanian friends were using it to find out about other parts of the country as we traveld there. I also bought the frommers guide and this one is much better in my opinion
This book saved my #$%!.......2006-09-21
This book is great.
Last summer I took my first overseas trip in my life. Being a lazy American, I did no real research and I landed in Bucharest Romania with nothing to fall back on but the 3rd Edition of Lonely Planet's "Romania & Moldova."
I was supposed to meet a friend who was traveling from Russia, but long story short... I was not able to meet up with him until 5 days later. I did not have any travel itinerary but this book allowed me to make the most of those 5 days by myself.
After those first days on my own, I finally met my buddy in Budapest Hungary, but then we traveled back to Romania for another 5 days or so.
The information in this book made it possible for me to have the trip of a lifetime. The only thing wish I did differently was take a Romanian language book with me.
That said, this book was hands down an invaluable asset to me.
I used this book to visit Bucharest, Deva, Hunedoara, Sighisoara, Sibiu and Poienari. (Except for Bucharest
I did not know anything about these towns and cities but this book helped me find them)
Traveling in a country where I could not speak the language and very few people could speak English was a tough experience for me, but this book helped make my trip an awesome adventure.
If I every make it back to Romania, I will be taking this book with me!
When I was off to Romania . . ........2006-07-14
. . . I found there was very little available in guidebooks. However, the Lonely Planet people did a good job with this difficult country. I appreciated the concise information, and I suppose it is a miracle they gathered as much info as they did!
The best available tourist guide for Moldova.......2005-11-03
As mentioned by other reviewers, there is very little useful information in English for visitors to Moldova. Most of what one can find are overly negative (and overly biased) media reports and dry, "CIA Factbook"-type descriptions.
The Lonely Planet Guide skillfully fills in this information void, providing lots of useful tourist information and tips interspersed with perspectives on history/culture and some light humor. Although the book may at times appear too forgiving to a highly discerning Western tourist, the authors deserve high praise for their upbeat, the "glass-is-half-full"/"diamond in the rough" tone uncovering a region that has undeservedly received little positive coverage from the mass media.
What a nice book!.......2005-02-14
I am planninga trip to Romania and I bought this book to help. It is very good, vivid, easy to understand and it makes me wish I was already there!

Customer Reviews:
Parts of this book are fiction----did the author even visit the place?.......2007-09-13
I bought this book for my recent trip to Romania. I should have passed on it and used the internet--the information would have been more useful. I especially found the information on the area around Bania Mare to be not only wrong--but useless. Sadly, I based a large part of my trip on the book. I also found the information on Brasov to be insufficient and in some cases just plain bad. I will say that the section on Bucharest was well done.
Nicely Written.......2007-08-06
I am enjoying reading this as a reference book for my first time trip to Romania coming up in three days. Since I haven't been able to buy Romanian currency in advance, I would have liked to have been given more information on currency exchange as well as more translated phrases such as "how much does this cost?" referring to the taxi scams mentioned as well as markets and shops. I would also have appreciated information on women traveling alone and the appropriateness of being alone in restaurants and night clubs.

Customer Reviews:
LP are the best guides.......2003-12-08
The previous review is slightly mistaken about the area this book covers. The reason they dont have Transylvania mentioned on the cover is because the book covers Romania and also the seperate country of Moldova. So none of the regions of Romania are mentioned on the cover and the title as shown is accurate. Anyway, the book is great, I travelled around in the company of a Moldovan who was also impressed by the book. The only places it falls down are the details, and I can forgive this as the country is changing rapidly as it heads towards membership of the EU.
I thoroughly recommend this book, and indeed any in the Lonely Planet series.
Lonely Planet always impresses me........2003-08-04
This book came in handy during my entire stay in Romania. It also pointed out little known monuments. This is definitely a comprehensive book on many levels...I wonder why they left out Transylvania on the cover though.
Modern Day Romania is comprised of the former country Romania, Moldovia, and Transylvania.
This book is chocked full of information. This book is not intended to be a phrase book and it's entire emphasis is the unique sentence structure that the Romanian language requires.
I was there because one of the books I authored was translated into Romanian by the Sibiu Monetary Financial Commodities Exchange.
Buy this if you have NO friends in Romania yet........2002-12-03
I found the author's tone supercilious and condescending, and the people I met and places I visited MUCH more warm and inviting than this book would suggest. The only place I found people a little "snotty" in the whole country was Bucharest - and they were nicer than the average Manhattanite, that's for sure! Your ideas about poverty and wealth WILL be challenged, your sense of humor will be expanded and thoroughly spanked, and if you don't try to buy everything that isn't for sale (or haggle over already [low] prices) you'll be amazed at how generous people are, too. Yes there are tourist traps galore, with inflated prices and rotten service, but not nearly as many as in say, the average coastal town in Maine.
A fantastic guide for an in-depth trip through Romania.......1999-03-17
After having spent two weeks last summer as well as several small ventures in and out of the country in the fall, I have to say that this guide is by far the best one to use for travels throughout Romania. There are a few inconsistencies here and there regarding buses, restaurants and hotels (most notably price-wise...quite forgiveable), but overall the book is extremely well put together and informative. I had the Rough Guide for Romania throughout my travels, but I always found myself using LP's guide instead. The only thing I would recommend for an improvement is the inclusion of a few more "off the beaten path" areas such as the Csango enclave in Moldavia and the Kalotaszeg region in Transylvania (the brief mention of the Kalotaszeg is rather insubstantial), as well as the oft-ignored Danubian town of Braila, which has a very pleasant and attractive town center. Perhaps it could use more expanded sections on Wallachia and Moldavia as well, since Transylvania is by far the most covered region in the book (an understandable decision, though it sometimes seems as though coverage of other areas is too skimpy in comparison). Regardless, for the first edition of the guide, LP has done an excellent job, and I'm sure the next edition will see a few more additions to fill out the book.
An Excellent Guide to Moldova.......1998-09-30
The guide section on Moldova is exceptionally helpful and accurate. It can be depended upon for correct and accurate information. A couple latebreaking items of information: The Wam's burger outlet is now closed. McDonalds has opened in Chisinau. The current enxchange rate is L4.58 = US$1. The exchange rate for the currency of Transdniestr (the Kupon) is now 846,000 Kupon = US$1.

"Secrets" No Longer.......2002-08-31
The title of this book could just as easily have been Presentation Skills of the Masters because few of us in business are called upon to give formal speeches but most of us frequently make all manner of presentations such as proposals, reports, briefings, and updates to individuals as well as to groups.
Have you ever stood up to speak to an audience, even a friendly one, and "died"? It's a terrible feeling, isn't it? Countless research studies indicate that a substantial majority of those surveyed have a greater fear of speaking in public than of dying. (This may explain the origin of the comment "I really died up there.") Here in a single volume are the thoughts, feelings, values, skills, techniques, reminiscences, and recommendations of 22 of the world's greatest public speakers. This book is a "must read" for anyone (literally anyone) who, from time to time, must prepare and then present a program of some kind to an audience.
Obviously, no single chapter (much less all of them) can guarantee that the reader will then be able to overcome fear or discomfort. However, after having read the entire book, the reader will then be much better prepared for whatever public presentations may be required of her or him. Advance preparation is essential and that includes such seemingly unimportant items as having a spare bulb for the overhead or slide projector; checking out the room, the seating arrangements, the room's lighting and temperature, and the sound equipment in advance; completing adequate "homework" on the audience and its expectations; and as conducting as many rehearsals as necessary to become comfortable with both the material and the flow of presenting it. I learned something of great value from each of the "masters" who contributed to this volume. Each of them has a distinctive style but all are effective communicators. Each prepares for a presentation in different ways but all believe in Murphy's Law and proceed accordingly.
Many of the "secrets" referred to in the book's title are just plain common sense but many others, until now, have been unknown to most people. All can be very helpful during the preparation and presentation process. Because almost everyone dreads speaking in public and so few people are any good at it, this book can provide you with a significant advantage during the progress of your career by setting you apart from (and a rung or two above) almost everyone else in your organization. It can also help you to have a much greater positive impact on those outside your organization, especially current and prospective customers. Those who are effective public speakers have much greater impact in one-to-one conversations and during group discussions. They respond more crisply and eloquently, hence more impressively, when asked direct questions. They are invariably better prepared. They speak with conviction. And they are highly persuasive. If this is the kind of impact you wish to have in all manner of situations, buy the book, read it, and then apply what you have learned in each and every situation in which you have the opportunity to communicate with someone else.

Simple shapes used to create very complex designs.......2006-03-20
The patterns in this book contain so much detail that I found them difficult to look at for extended periods of time. The patterns are in black and white and they pull your eyes in several directions. My eyes bounded from section to section, as sometimes I was able to separate them and other times they seemed to blur together. Simple geometric figures such as circles, spirals, dots and triangles are repeated and altered to create diagrams that appear infinite in scope. If you are someone looking for a dynamic background for your artwork or a tile to use to create a larger backdrop, then this is a book you should take a look at.
Book Description
Anyone who owns a feline knows that cats typically rule the roost, the house, and almost everything else! However, cats also possess some inherent, commendable traits that when observed closely, can stir admiration in any mere mortal. Cats are by nature perceptive, serene, playful, intelligent, self-respecting, and of course, curious. In this delightful gift book, these and other essential cat traits are presented through a combination of outstanding photography and motivating quotations, each guaranteed to inspire readers and enchant cat lovers.

"The cat is nature's beauty".......2003-07-18
"Cats are angels with fur" is the first quote (attributed to Sark) in this charming little book, which in its 96 pages, is full of marvelous photography and clever sayings that apply to the wise and always fascinating feline.
There are 13 categories, like "Serene", "Curious", and "Independent". The photos depict many types, from the "mutt" variety to pure bred, and you are sure to find one that looks just like your beloved fur friend. The adorably plump shorthair tricolor playing with a squirrel, on page 17, looks exactly like my buddy Liddy !
It has a nice layout for such a small book, and good quality glossy paper; it would make a fine stocking-stuffer for the Holidays, and as Leonardo da Vinci said, "The smallest feline is a masterpiece".

Book Description
This study on Flavia Julia Helena Augusta, mother of Constantine the Great, is divided into two parts. The purpose of the first part is to ascertain the facts of Helena's life on the basis of reliable historical sources. The second part deals with the legends concerning the discovery of the True Cross in Jerusalem by Helena. Fact and fiction, which are so often confused in the secondary literature, are carefully distinguished. The first part deals with subjects like Helena's life before the reign of Constantine, her residences in Trier and Rome, her conversion, her position at the court of Constantine, and her pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The second part investigates the origin, development and function of the legends of the discovery of the True Cross, which were developed in the 4th and 5th centuries: the Helena legend, the (Syriac) Protonike legend and the Judas Cyriacus legend. An appendix deals with the portraits of Helena.

Book Description
It's a real life coming of age story for a black manchild in urban America. It's about love and the lack thereof. It's gangs, drugs, violence and sex. It's about brotherhood and wanting to belong. Coming Clean is about choices... the wrong choices and survival. It's living and dying, life and death, blue steel, concrete and jungles! It's 4 years, 1968 through 1971. It's young men at the heart of Kansas City's Black East Side, living life on the edge, having fun, but at the same time lucky and happy to be alive.
