Great source of information.......2001-12-20

No bigger than this book is, it is a great source of information on large cats. Complimented very well with fantastic photography by Tom Brakefield. Gives general home ranges with maps of these beautiful cats' countries. One of the few books that is accurate as to their habits. And has a very nice reference list in the back of the book. In case this interests anyone.

Cursory and limited, but somewhat sufficient for travel.......2007-01-26

This book does what most of the Lonely Planet guides do best: provides clear, personalized reviews of places to stay, eat and explore wherever your destination may be. However, LP Tibet focuses mostly on Central Tibet and the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR), with very little info and inadequate maps for what was Kham and Amdo (now contained in Sichuan and Qinghai provinces). This is where other Tibet guides, Gyurmed Dorje's Footprint edition in particular, shine. LP Tibet will get you around the TAR comfortably, but lacks the depth of information and regional exploration required for more intensive and insightful travel there.

For the most extensive discussions of religious sites (but DO NOT USE these routes and maps!), try to find the "Tibet Handbook" by Victor Chan (out of print). Also, Keith Dowman's "The Power Places of Central Tibet" provides excellent, traditional descriptions of Tibetan sacred sites.

Tibet guide at its best.......2007-01-17

I've used Lonely Planet guides in all my travels. I've found their guide book for Tibet the best one they have ever published. It captured everything about Tibet intricately.

Perfect Also for the Armchair Traveler.......2006-09-24

I've never been to Tibet and probably never will get there, but reading about Tibet and Central Asia is one of my interests, so I bought this book to augment my reading. The book I was reading, "Younghusband" by Patrick French, told of the eponymous colonial Brit who explored and exploited Tibet late in the 19th century. It was interesting to compare his notes of more than 100 years ago with Lonely Planet's descriptions of the same places today. This book was incredibly detailed and well-written, and although I can't vouch for its accuracy, reading the other reviews here indicate that the authors were right on the money. Good job.

I went to Tibet.......2004-06-10

Last summer I went to Tibet with this book as a NGO officer. This book is very useful, but no information about dalily life of real Tibeatian. Acturally, in the downtown, there are few Tibetian people. There are only Hun people, majority ethnic group in China, who enjoy their prestages. On the other hands, Tibetian people live in the northen part with surveillance camera. Since some of them are sterllized, real Tibetean people would disapper in this century, apart from the exiles in Indea.

Best Travel Book.......2003-11-05

It's the best LP book ever. I bought the book a few months ago before leaving for Tibet. What a great help this book was! I read every single word one every single page! Went to so many facinating places This is THE book you must have if you plan to go to the snowland. Apparently, every independent traveller in Tibet has one. It has so many useful maps and hiking guide. I was in Tibet for two weeks, still wish I had more time there.

Mathieu generously, and eloquently, teaches and inspires the reader to explore the harmonic Deep Structure of the mystery we call Music. Using music theory, philosophy, mathematics, poetry, botany, and his own rich world view, he unearths the underlying relationship between harmony, scale, and rhythm. Starting with the acoustical given of the overtone series, Mathieu builds a coherent system with which the Music student can frame and further delve into the patterned world of Musical phenomena.

What a fantastic experiential approach to learning harmony!.......2007-05-05

I am a musician and have played professionally. Now, I work in the psychology field, but I have a good education in science including physics. I think this qualifies me to speak about the merits of this very fine book.

This book differs from most other musical theory books in that it encourages you to experience how music evolved and harmony grew out of the natural harmonics that occur in strings and other instruments. It gives you the theory and some of the physcis, but must importantly it provides exercises to give you the FELT SENSE of what each concept corresponds to. This is both at the emotional and somatic levels.

This is a very natural way to learn and embody harmony. It makes use of chanting intervals with a string drone or note from an instrument or tuning fork. It teaches you how to listen for harmonics and explains how these harmonics naturally lead to the contruction of certain chords and scales. It is really a "ground up" approach as one reviewer said and an eye opener even for most musicians.

The book encouraged the use of Indian syllables for the musical exercises, which was a bit difficult for me. However, the ideas behind the exercises were great and could be converted to do, re, mi, fa, so, la, di, do. I must confess, however, that at times this was a bit of an annoyance, but totally forgivable given what I took away from this book!

Harmonic Experience changed my life! .......2007-02-16

Harmonic Experience has proven to be as valuable of an education as my four years at a music conservatory. But this is also easily accessible to all musicians, not just professionals! The book is written in clear English and it feels like Mathieu is in the room with you.

I'm delighted to find some insight into some musical contradictions that I frequently think about, but have never reconciled. Harmonic series vs. major and minor tonality? just intonation vs. equal temperament? western harmony vs. eastern music? It's beautiful to see a unified perspective that embraces acoustics, emotion, intuition, knowledge and many musical traditions. My approach to intonation has also changed for the better!

I have studied music, including theory, for thirty years, and nothing has expanded my understanding (and perception!) of music as much as the information in this book.

I have studied music with the author of this book -- he's a great writer about music and an even better teacher! I know that this work is the result of a lifetime of profound consideration of what is at the very heart of the musical experience, and of why music affects us as it does. W. A. Mathieu's highly intelligent exposition is a great gift to all who wish to deepen their understanding of music.

Believe it or not I keep this book by my bed and enjoy reading the anecdotes over and over. The book is fun and a helpful tool if you are new to public speaking. Plotnik is a wordsmith who loves what he writes about. Sure, if you want a pedantic, academic, in depth, boring, "The Bible" of editing, writing, and grammar you should buy the Chicago Manual of Style. If you want to have fun with a good coaching on expressiveness this book will help. I know it made me change the way I did any public speaking. Plotnik made me analyze my speeches, and now I am aware of the sins which could make my speeches stink. Plotnik's sense of humor is a treat in the world of serious-language-salad-tossers, and he doesn't hold back any punches. In addition, his book entitled, Elements of Authorship, is one of the most depressing books I've ever read, but I would highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in writing. We mortals need all the help we can get to embrace expressive communication. Like spitting in the ocean; every little bit helps.

Two Fatal Flaws.......1999-08-13

Reading the great quotations, the thesaurus, or anything else that features vivid expression is valuable advice. It almost makes up for the book's two fatal flaws. First, "Elements" is jokey, sophomoric, and superficial in too many places. Second, the book's main prescriptions are neither summarized for ready reference nor linked to any underlying principles of good composition. Strunk & White's "Elements of Style" is more systematic and a better choice for my money.

Change your expression, change your life!.......1999-02-23

I am an Asian who came to this country when I was 25 for a Ph.D. in science and I am in my late 30's. All these years I took my horrible English for granted --awkward, lifeless and monotone. This book was a positive answer after a long search for a solution and finally my English made a much needed quantum leap. Great book!

A language book that's fun to read! Excellent........1997-08-22

The Elements of Expression is a rarity--a book on language that's actually fun to read. If you're a words person, you should glom onto this book. Plotnik illustrates expressive writing and conversation with examples from Shakespeare to Don Johnson. There are two especially pithy chapters: "Grammar and Other Night Sweats" and "Make My Day: The Power of Tough Talk." The book concludes with a witty and original discussion of expressiveness in cyberspace--it's as fresh as today

Splendid overview of this trade.......2003-09-18

This is the companion catalog to an important and long awaited exhibit of some of the most exquisite firearms ever made in modern times, which was held at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. The photography is stunning, the biographical and technical texts written by Wallace Gusler and Mark Silver are excellent and highly instructive, and the entire spectrum of decorated firearms is ably represented.

Firearms enthusiasts of every inclination will find something in here that will make them mute with wonder. Anyone with the least interest in fine firearms as an art form will be very sorry indeed if he doesn't pick up a copy of this (probably soon to be scarce) volume. It belongs alongside Wilson's "Steel Canvas", and is really in some ways a more important work, marking one of the very few times that professional fine arts academia has shown a serious interest in firearms as other than oddities to be explained away politically, or shunned outright. The incredible beauty and artistic sophistication in evidence here make it plain that these firearms, and hundreds like them not available for this publication, deserve a place on the front rank of any of the decorative art forms man has produced.

Not to be overlooked is the touching and entirely appropriate homage to John Bivins, who can rightly claim to have been one of perhaps five or six souls who diligently resurrected the craft of the American longrifle when it was on the very brink of extinction in the early 1960's. "First among equals", John's legacy will live forever and this book is a fitting testament to his contribution.
