Good book before you go.......2007-06-05

I got this before going to Hawaii and it is a great book. You don't realize how valuable it is until you get to Kauai and then wish you had it with you. Be sure to take it with you when you go. There is no way to remember all the things you want to see and do when you get there.

Frommer's Kauai.......2007-03-08

This particular book is the typical Frommer's edition. It gives the places that the staff have visited and reviewed. I wish it would delve into more of what the restaurant, hotel, or tourist attraction has to offer.

Lousy Travel Book.......2006-06-02

Frommer's desperately needs to expand this book in its second edition if it is going to be useful. Very brief descriptions on almost everything, no useful maps, limited in scope. Disappointing.

Buy the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook instead...........2006-03-14

I over prepare for trips and in doing so I bought Fodor's guide to all the Hawaiian islands, Frommer's Kauai (the one you are thinking about buying), and the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. This Frommer book is absolutely awful. It has no more detail in it than the Kauai section of the Fodor's book covering all of the islands. I have never been more disapointed with a travel book than I was with this one. The best Kauai book by far is the Ultimate Guidebook by Doughty and Friedman. Again, this book is nothing more than a waste of your money.

I find the organization is a little "off" with learning the tenses and grammar, and there are some small grammatical mistakes. The CD included is good to listen to to hear native accents.

Tremendous method for language self education.......2001-03-12

I've studied Latin, German, Japanese, and French using various popular methods. This course with its accompanying audio and workbook materials is the best language course that I have ever attempted on my own. Most self-study language courses are either too simple to be of practical use or focus so much on grammar and sentence construction that they turn into drudgery after a few lessons. Unless the course material is engaging, it's very hard to continue the course with no mid-term or final exams as motivation. Simply put, I enjoyed this course so much that I looked forward to each of my weekly self-study sessions.

This book was thoroughly disappointing. Provided OK information, but was entirely too technical in its approach. If you do not have a Ph.D. in biology then do not bother with this book, you will not understand it.

compact reef guide.......2003-11-18

It should be rated at 5 stars but I give only 4 stars because of its technical nature and my beginner's comprehension. After that, it is a compact guide full of useful, hands-on info that helps the hobbyist create their own ideal aquarium environment.

No common name references.......2002-03-23

Don't get me wrong, this book is good, however... while reading the book, it uses mostly the scientific names for everything. It would be nice if after the scientific name, it has a common name in parenthesis, you know, using the names the fish stores use. Other than that, it is a decent book.

Yes, 5 stars! Pound for pound (and dollar for dollar) this is one of the best books on marine reef keeping you can buy.

I own several reef and aquarium books. They range from the brilliant, to the not-so-swift-waste-of-money types. The "Marine Reef Aquarium Handbook" by Robert J. Goldstein ranks waaaay up the list, kept from the top only because of its brevity.

This book touches on a LOT of topics, and it covers them in enough detail to really help you understand and apply what you need to keep your reef (or any aquarium) running well. Due to its (somewhat) small size, it does not cover topics in great detail. Depending on what you want, that may or may not be a good thing. There is however, enough information, written in plain English, for any aquarium keeper--from rank beginner, to the Old Man in the Sea--to learn something new.

No, this book doesn't contain the depth of information that one of those $80 marine reef books does. But it contains a wealth of information and will send you well on your way to starting up a reef or maintaining your current reef. Even if you're just looking for an interesting read, you can't go wrong with the "Marine Reef Aquarium Handbook" by Robert J. Goldstein.

I like the pictures & the info is good for a reef beginner like me. I've had freshwater tanks for years, so the basic salt intro was what I needed & this fits the bill.

Not Really About Corals.......2001-07-28

Having used Tullock's "Reef Aquarium" book extensively, I expected this book to focus on corals specifically. Instead it spends an inordinate amount of time on water conditions, lighting, and other "generic" marine aquarium topics. In fact, only the last 1/4 of the book actually focuses on corals. While the book is helpful and certainly Tullock's knowledge is extensive, the book falls short of its title and ranks poorly compared to other books dedicated to the care of Corals.

The memoirs provide vignettes of Indonesian life, both rural and urban, as seen through the eyes of the author first as a girl, then as a wife separated from her husband during the Japanese occupation, finally as an immigrant to the United States after World War II. This self-portrait gives glimpses of the life of Indos from inside their society, glimpses that are valuable for their descendants as well as for outsiders.
