Integrative Functions In The Mammalian Auditory Pathway (Springer Handbook of Auditory Research)
ASIN: 0387976906 |
Book Description
The Springer Handbook of Auditory Research presents a series of comprehensive and synthetic reviews of the fundamental topics in modern auditory research. It is aimed at all individuals with interests in hearing research including advanced graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and clinical investigators. The volumes will introduce new investigators to important aspects of hearing science and help established investigators to better understand the fundamental theories and data in fields of hearing that they may not normally follow closely. Each volume is intended to present a particular topic comprehensively, and each chapter will serve as a synthetic overview and guide to the literature. As such, the chapters present neither exhaustive data reviews nor original research that has not appeared in peer-reviewed journals. The series focuses on topics that have developed a solid data and conceptual foundation rather than on those for which a literature is only beginning to develop. New research areas will be covered on a timely basis in the series as they begin to mature. Each volume in the series consists of five to eight substantial chapters on a particular topic. In some cases the topics will be ones of traditional interest for which there is a solid body of data and theory, such as auditory neuroanatomy (Vol. 1) and neurophysiology (Vol. 2).

Mammalian Auditory Pathway: NEUROANATOMY (Springer Handbook of Auditory Research)
ASIN: 038798903X |
Book Description
The biological importance of the auditory system of vertebrates lies in its ability to provide animals with information about where sounds arise and what they mean. The auditory system can alert animals to the presence of danger or prey and, in many animals, serves as a basis for communication. This volume summarizes how the electrical signals used to represent sounds are encoded and interpreted through the integrated roles of various nuclei. It builds on the information about the anatomy and physiology of the auditory pathway found in volumes 1 and 2 of the Springer Handbook of Auditory Research. While the first two volumes describe the structure and function of auditory pathways, this volume will explain how these pathways lead to an animal's ability to localize and interpret sounds. The authors discuss how a variety of species recognize the location of sources and complex features of sound, thus contributing to the ongoing research toward an understanding of the general functional strategies of mammalian auditory systems.

Beautiful book! .......2006-03-27
This was such a fun book to read and the photography is absolutely beautiful! Italy is much more fun off the beaten path anyway...and I'm so glad to see more and more books that take the traveler to the unknown places!
--Vicki Landes, author of "Europe for the Senses - A Photographic Journal"
Behind Italy's Curtain.......2005-05-02
A beautiful book that takes travelers to places in Italy that are not generally publicized. An excellent travel guide.
Seeing the romantic heart of this beautiful country........2001-07-25
An excellent guide that takes you off the beaten tourist trap path. This warm and wonderful book invites you to the most unforgettable private villas, castles, fortresses, and farmhouses-places most of which you can actually stay. This book also is a good introduction to each region's local food and wine, sites, festivals, and other points of interest. The book continues to a selection of unique estates memorable that are known for their meals, architecture, grounds, and history. Opening this book is like the owners of these preserved and fully functional estates opening up their ancestral homes many of whom actually do and this book shows you how. The book further lays a full featured and detailed appendix providing all the practical information you'll need for planning your visits, including complete contact information, prices, amenities, and dates of availability, plus helpful facts and advice on transportation, seasonal considerations, and making reservations. Ever think of traveling to Italy and seeing the romantic heart of this beautiful country. This is the book you will need. ...
Plan your trip around this book.......2000-12-22
This is not only a beautiful book, with gorgeous pictures of Tuscany's castles and countryside, but also provides an excellent service by relaying contact information for all of the castles profiled in the book. My husband and I stayed at Castello di Ripa D'orcia this past fall and it was the highlight of our Italy vacation. We chose the castle as our base since the pictures were so magnificent--and we were not disappointed. It was well off the beaten path and it was the only time during our vacation that we were exposed to a real slice of Italy without the onslaught of tour buses that seemed to invade many of the other small villages in the area. If you are planning a trip to Italy, I highly recommend that you comb through this book and choose one of the country estates to stay in. It will make your trip much more memorable and enjoyable.
Rich resource to discover hidden Italian inn splendors.......2000-06-19
This is a wonderful Italian guide book that provides the reader a selection of off-the-beaten- track inns in the very scenic and culturally rich regions of Tuscany and Umbria. We used Ms Hurst's "Italian Country Hideaways" to book a glorious stay at a 19th century, castle-estate in Umbria. Her description of the Titignano estate accurately captured its atmosphere, our stay there was the highlight of our Italian vacation.
The audience for this book is anyone who has an appreciation for Italy and is looking for information to go beyond the typical tourist staples of Italy, i.e. Rome, Venice and Florence. Ms Hurst impeccable research provides the reader a rich resource to discover the hidden splendors that a non-native Italian tourist would not find. The books starts with a short introduction in which Ms Hurst describes her criteria for featuring the 30 unique inns. The text is well written by someone who knows her subject and obviously enjoyed doing her research. "Italian Country Hideaways" is filled with splendid photos that aptly portrays the scenic and immensely civilized Tuscany and Umbria regions and its featured inns. In essence its a tourist guide and coffee table book in one. Included is all the prerequisite information on how to contact (phone, fax and email addresses) the inns. The only quip I have is the lack of an updated map, it would have been helpful to provide an idea where these inns are relative to the say Florence and Rome. Otherwise, this is a great travel resource for anyone contemplating a trip to the Tuscany region and who wants to interact with the local culture.

Loads of info.......2007-07-12
I purchased several Pioneer books recently in preparation for a Pioneer unit that my homeschool coop was having. This book is my favorite. It has lots of practical, fun ideas and projects. Some books have "kid friendly projects" but then I wonder "for whose kid??" This book delivers! Definitely worth a look!
Excellent book for .......2007-05-01
homeschooling about the west. It has lots of nice crafts to do. Although, the fort they had an example did not work for us. We had to improvise with lots of hot glue.
Be careful with Native American activities.......2004-09-04
Apologies--I haven't read this book yet, but I had to say something about this point. While Wiley & Son's activity & craft books are generally outstanding, there is a potentially serious problem with this one. The Hopi and Navajo activities included here should be handled with extreme care.
Hopi kachina dolls and Navajo sand paintings are both sacred items in their cultural context. While they are commonly promoted as tourist items and (wrongly) as appropriate "multi-cultural" activities for children, a settler in the southwest in 1843 would most likely *not* have encountered them unless they were actively involved with the Hopi or Navajo to the extent of becoming tribal members active in the Hopi or Navajo religions.
Kachinas are deities for the Hopi, interceding between humans and higher powers along the same lines as Catholic saints. Kachina dolls are representations of the kachinas, given to children to teach them about the different spirits, what they wear and how they act. The kachina spirits spend half of each year living among the Hopi villagers in the form of costumed dancers, in a cycle of often playful but still sacred festivals.
Navajo sand paintings are sacred components of healing ceremonies, which can last several nights (the length depending on which ceremony it is). The painting is made near the beginning of the ceremony, as a map for the spiritual journey the person will undergo, and is erased at the end.
White settlers in the Southwest might have seen Hopi kachina dolls held by children, and might have witnessed Hopi kachina dances (probably from a distance); but Navajo sand paintings they would *not* have seen unless they were part of a healing ceremony.
If you use the Native American sections of this book, please do so only with the understanding of the sacred nature of these activities, with proper respect for their meaning. Do a little more research, and make sure both you and the children grasp the nature of the belief systems that Hopi kachinas and Navajo sand paintings represent. To do these activities with your kids is a little like playing at making Catholic communion bread and having a mock Eucharist ceremony.
Thanks for reading!
This book brings the Pioneer life into *our* lives........1999-05-29
PIONEER DAYS is a wonderful hands-on approach to teaching our children the pioneer lifestyle. The book follows a ficticious family thru the year 1843 and allows you to learn with your children what life on the homestead was like, including crafts, recipes, games and more. I would recommend it to homeschoolers especially as a good source for pioneer study. It has a good bibliography in the back for additional readings on the time period, including the LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE series. If you are hooked with this style of learning, there are other titles in this series (AMERICAN KIDS IN HISTORY) with which you may continue your study of American History.

There's nothing like a salmon plucked fresh from the waters of the Pacific Northwest. But this precious fish is more than a foodstuff, more than a commodity, says Natalie Fobes. "It is a theme that cascades relentlessly through [the] spirits" of Native Americans, Russians, Japanese, fishermen, biologists, and salmon farmers, an enigmatic creature that has shaped the culture of the Pacific Rim since ancient times. "What is it about the salmon that touches a person's soul?" asks Fobes. Whatever it is, she has captured it on film. The photographer complements her eye-opening color images with poetic word pictures, augmenting the eloquent essays by Tom Jay and Brad Matsen.

Not Enough Information About the Pottery Lines.......2007-09-24
I will agree right away that this book has some nice photography and it is not likely that the average collector will ever see some of the pottery listed in this book. Also I want to tear my hair out at times distinguishing between Nelson McCoy pottery and Bush McCoy pottery. Some of the pieces listed were apparently either made by both or they were borrowing heavily from each other. For instance I have always thought that the Princess Line from the mid-60's was a Nelson McCoy line (Page 144). So it would definitely suggest that a novice might also want to pick up Sanfords'Guide to McCoy Pottery. Just to note, the use of the name Brush Mccoy ended in the late 20's so anything made after that should be either Brush or Mccoy, not the combined name.
(I also have to admit that I have a distinct fondness for the Princess Line. It is still reasonable and fits nicely with both a mid century modern decor or a more traditional decor. Plus, it is still reasonably priced.)
The price guide is a separate leaflet, but as was noted elsewhere it is very outdated. The price of the older items have soared, and even the more common planters are attracting interest because of the increased interest in mid 20th century design.
Finally, I have a complaint about the presentation of information in the book. One of the main reasons to buy a guide such as this is the identification of unmarked pieces. A great deal of the early Brush pottery was unmarked. A good way to identify unmarked pottery is by looking at the bottom of the pot. The way the pottery is finished can give good hints about maker and age. Good photographs of the bottom of some of these pieces would be very helpful in identification.
For the serious collector.......2005-02-28
This is a well organized reference to Bush-McCoy. It contains a history of Bush-McCoy; this added knowledge adds to the fun of collecting and allow you to sound more like you know what you are doing. Then there are pages on the different "marks" of the pottery. There is a dated value guide. But I find it easer to do my own comparing. The big plus is the color pictures that show what is available. For those discriminate people that do not just buy anything that says Bush-McCoy there is an index. It is also fun to see you Bush-McCoy pieces in the book.
Beautiful book, great information........1998-08-17
This book is a must for collectors of Brush-McCoy pottery. The pictures are beautiful and the information offered is just great. A large number of different pieces of Brush-McCoy pottery are shown but this book does not show every piece of pottery made by Brush-McCoy. I was very pleased with this book.
Book Description
Admired for elegant blossoms and graceful foliage, the lily commands a featured place in any garden. This book discusses the biology of the lily plant, its propagation, and its cultivation. McRae also documents wild lily species and the creation of spectacular contemporary garden lilies. The author developed many new hybrids; his book is unique in providing up-to-date practical techniques for lily hybridizing, along with his views on current and future developments.

A reference work.......2003-07-28
This guide answers almost all questions one can develop on this beautiful plants. From a basic introduction into the genus along propagation and cultivation up to a comprehensive taxonomic guide on species (almost complete) and hybrids and finally professional topics as exhibitions, hybridizing and commercial production, this book covers it all. And what I liked most: though it has more than 100 pictures, it doesn't suffer of the "coffee-table"-syndrome (large, non-detailed pictures) as so many plant books regrettably do.
Absolutely recommended. It's an exceptional work and it will last long for you to reach a point where this book can't be of use anymore.

The lily hybridizer's Bible.......2001-02-25
This book is an incredible resource for those wishing to try their hand at lily hybridization. A word of warning though, it really is not written for the layperson. While you do not have to have a Ph.d. in botany to understand the contents, those with a fair amount of horticultural experience will benefit the most. The book is clearly and concisely written, and is also organized nicely. The photos are beautiful and the line drawings are very helpful. It is the most in-depth discussion of lilies I have ever encountered, written by one of the world's experts in the field. I hope others will enjoy it as much as I have.
Concide and readable.......1998-10-23

Book Description
Growing interest in the formulation of pressure-sensitive adhesives as described in the first edition of this book (Pressure-Sensitive Formulation, VSP, 2000) required a new, enlarged edition including the design of pressure-sensitive adhesives as a separate volume. Developments in the understanding of pressure sensitivity were necessary to use macromolecular chemistry for pressure-sensitive design. Such developments include polymer physics and contact mechanics. Progress in coating technology, especially in in-line coating- and synthesis, opened new ways for the design of pressure-sensitive adhesives and products as well. Actually, pressure-sensitive-products with and without adhesives compete requiring a broad variety of material formulations and the corresponding manufacturing technology.
The first volume of the book examines the theoretical aspects of pressure-sensitive design, based on macromolecular chemistry, macromolecular physics, rheology and contact mechanics.
The second volume describes the practical aspects of pressure-sensitive design and formulation, related to product application.
The advances in the various domains are described by specialists.

Forget the ending preposition. There are too many mistakes in this book to use it. From illegible type, bad printing, and examples that do not illustrate the points being made, this is not a book to buy.
Save your $$$ and get the book, "The Complete Typographer" by Christopher Perfect. After years of teaching typography, this is a book that covers the basics and more.
Interesting is that both of these books are from the same publishers.

In his own time, W.E.B. Du Bois was a controversial figure, and now, more than 30 years after his death, he continues to be so. Born in 1868, Du Bois was a central figure in African American intellectual life during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, yet many of his positions are difficult to reconcile with current African American thought. Du Bois, for example, was an elitist who believed that black society was divided between "the talented tenth" and everybody else. Yet in his later years, he joined the communist party and moved to Africa, where he lived out the remainder of his life. Since his death in 1963, a generation of African American intellectuals have tried to interpret, explain, or revise him according to their own beliefs; now Adolph Reed Jr. weighs in with W.E.B. Du Bois and American Political Thought.
Reed's approach to Du Bois is simple: he believes that what you read is what you get. When, for example, Du Bois wrote movingly in The Souls of Black Folk of a feeling of "twoness," a sense of warring natures, Reed suggests that, far from embracing a notion of double consciousness, Du Bois was actually following precepts of early 20th-century social theory which described the split between primitive and civilized societies. In addition to his discussion about Du Bois, Reed comments on many other African American critics at work today, from Houston Baker to Henry Louis Gates, making the author of W.E.B. Du Bois and American Political Thought as controversial as his subject.
Book Description
In this explosive book, Adolph Reed covers for the first time the full sweep and totality of W. E. B. Du Bois's political thought. Departing from existing scholarship, Reed locates the sources of Du Bois's thought in the cauldron of reform-minded intellectual life at the turn of the century, demonstrating that a commitment to liberal collectivism, an essentially Fabian socialism, remained pivotal in Du Bois's thought even as he embraced a range of political programs over time, including radical Marxism. Reconceptualizes African American Political Thought.......2002-02-17
When most think about Dubois, one of the first theoretical formulations that come to mind is the oft-quoted "double-consciousness." In this work, Reed's central task is to situate African American political thought squarely within the material context in which it occurs using W.E.B. Dubois as the focus for this project. Along the way Reed slices and dices Henry Louis Gates and the new black intellectuals, as well as the troublesome concept of "double consciousness" that Reed shows to be overstudied at best. Clearly among the best works of its kind to come to light in some years.
