Very complete but not a typical travel guide.......2006-07-03

This book totally fulfilled what I was expecting, meaning an infinity of detailed technical information about nearly all places of interest in the whole continent. Hence, if you are looking for a very complete list of hotels, restaurants, museums, travel agencies etc. this is the perfect book. However, this book can't possibly, and is not meant to provide any but the very basic background information about history, language, culture, politics etc. As long as you don't expect something like a classical travel guide and rather view this as a "manual" buy it but consider to complement it with additional background information where needed.

There is a lot of information in the guide book and it is up to date. There is information on major cities and smaller, less travelled places. There are a lot of hotel recommendations, more than in any other guide book.

These are the good sides of the guide book, but there are also some seroius lacks. The maps are bad and there are less maps than in other guide books. The basic information on sights is difficult to browse. There is no background information on sights. There are no highlightened sights. The prices are quoted in USD, not in local currency. There is no information for gay travellers.

If you are planning to travel widely in Brazil consider other guide books. The Brazilian section is the worst one!

Still the best on South America.......2006-02-04

Still the most experienced, complete, objective, relevant, orderly, up-to-date guide book on South America, with the clearest maps since 2005. Fine paper makes it compact too.
The Footprint Peru 2005, an annotated photocopy of it, Footprint South America 2005 & 2004, Footprint Ecuador, Peru & Bolivia 2005, & Footprint Central America & Mexico have all been stolen from our library during 2005, while various competitors books have been left behind by travellers.
Most competitors books appear only once in 4 years & are hopelessly out of date for most of that time.

The Handbook reads better than ever. In print since 1924, and known as the bible to South America, the new South America guide provides reliable information. The handbook profiles national parks and of special note is the "Responsible Tourism" essay that the book pioneered in 1992.

I am comparing this book to its primary competitor Lonely Planet South America.....
Pros to Footprint:

1.)Up to date; as of this writting Lonely planet had not updated their south america guide for about 2 years, footprint is very uptodate

2.)Most content: at over 1700 pages this book has the most content

Negatives:

1.) Not well written. I find this book very confusing, Lonely Planet is 4 or 5 times easier to use...Footprint is very vague on doing basic things like taking a bus from one town to next, and hard to plot a route to follow..

2.)Paper quality....I know this is a minor thing, but Footprint used very cheap paper, and it is hard to turn pages...also almost no photographs in this book, so you better have good imagination ;)

Personally, if I had to choose only one guide I would choose Lonely Planet, but this is perhaps a good supplement.....I haven't really looked at any of the Fodor books.....

A Wonderful Resource; A Great Story.......2004-06-24

I am a teacher who was looking for a book for my students to use when we study Thanksgiving. Without a doubt, this story is one of the best that we use. It is a great introduction to reading non-fiction, and it provides a wealth of information for students, parents, and teachers.

My students love the story. They can easily understand the Question-Answer format, and it is not overwhelming in its content. It's written in an 'easy reading' style that the students can understand. They are really interested in what the kids did during this time, especially what they did for fun.

I recommend this book to any student who wants to know more about the Pilgrims and their arrival to America. I also recommend this to any adult who is looking for a wonderful non-fiction book for their favorite child(ren).

This book is hard to put down!.......2001-11-09

I got "If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620" for our Thanksgiving unit based on several glowing recommendations. I was not disappointed. Both my 5 yo and I had a hard stopping once we got started. I learned things about the Pilgrims I'd never known. And, the content is fascinating for children. It covered such curious topics as Did they bathe on the Mayflower?, What did they eat?, How were people who broke the law punished?, What did children do? It was written to entertain anyone over the age of 4. It's a question/answer book and exceptionally well done.

I purchased this book for my Grandchildren but this is not only a great book for 4-8 year olds but for anyone over 4. You might learn some things you didn't know. By the way, if you ever go to Plymouth you can go on the Mayflower II, and be sure to visit Plimoth Plantation (it's like going back in time to 1630).

This book by Ann McGovern depicts the life that you would have had on the Mayflower. You get a sense and almost feel like you are there with the rest of the pilgrims in 1620. The detail is just great and is a book that all kids should read from a historical standpoint.

Outstanding!.......2004-05-22

As an animal lover myself, as a certified hospice bereavement counselor, and as another author who's written about pet loss and specialized in pet loss counseling since 1992, I loved this book. Like all the rest of Alan's books, this one is clearly stated, clinically accurate and beautifully written -- and it comes from the heart of the author's own personal experience with pet loss. Because Alan Wolfelt is so very well known and respected in the field of death education and counseling, I believe his book about pet loss will do more than help bereaved animal lovers. I think it will lift the experience of pet loss into the mainstream of professional grief literature where it rightfully belongs, and that alone is a cause for celebration. This is a real collectors opportunity to own a rare collection of photos of some of the most uniqe jewels in the world.Book is very large and very thick.Dont expect to much reading as there is no company history or insight (other than the great pictures of jewelry)into Mr Rosenthal's magical world.This book is really worth every dollor you really should buy it while the opportunity is availible.

I absolutely adore this book. The pieces are phenomenal. I have never seen work like this anywhere else. The book is made up of color plates on nearly every page with two pages of text at the very end. I have spent hours gazing at the exquisite workmanship and design. Worth every penny.

I was having a hard time finding books with bouquets. Out of all the books I looked at, this book had the best pictures and ideas. I like the fact that they tell you the names of each flower. It also tells you which flowers are in bloom for each season. I found it very helpful. A lot of info. in a very cute little book.

I use this book with almost every bride who visits and have shared with persons who make Bridal Flowers in their homes. I cannot always remember what flower is in what season and give a good description, so I carry this tiny book with me. I think I need a second one for the library at home!

I was expecting a little bit bigger book with lots of ideas for bouquets for a wedding. There were some pages with pictures of flowers, their names, and what season they were available in. There is a little bit of advice on shopping for wedding flowers, but not much. I expected more from the editors of Bride's Magazine.

The book provides the names of about twenty flowers, many of the pictures are of the same type of flower in a different color or bouquet. I don't think the book was all that helpful.

Needs more..........2001-07-05

Of 182 pages, only 29 are about Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. Also, there is too much emphasis on restaurants and hotels and not enough information about the location. I am fairly confident that I can find a place to eat when the time comes. What I want to know is: "what is there to see and do?"

However, the information that is in the book is helpful and well-written. I would recommend this book as a place to start but not a complete or even moderate guide.

I found this book to be disapointing. It seems to be pretty good at listing where to stay and where to eat but greatly lacks in the "what to do" department. Supposedly written by someone who has lived and traveled extensively in Mexico you might think the book would be filled with an insider's view on where to go and what to do. I'm going by cruise ship and they've provided me with more information on what there is to do in these places than this guide. I'd put this on the "there's got to be a better guide" list and pass it by.

Outstanding book.......2007-06-05

It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.

This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.

Outstanding Resource.......2007-01-03

This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.

My rendering skills have improved HUGELY scince recieving this book. It helps with marker, colored pencils, pastels, how to treat light, etc. My renderings look amazing and it is a great reference for when I'm not sure how to treat a surface/object. I would absolutely recommend this book.

Buy it and read it before buying an oriental rug.......2000-05-26

This is a folksy book written by one of the few Americans who really knew oriental rugs. Colonel Jacobsen clearly states that this is a book intended to help people purchase their first oriental rug. If you intend to buy one, read this book first, and you will not make a mayor mistake either in terms of money or quality. And after you have bought your rug, the Colonel will show you how to take care of it better than most... Yes, some information may be outdated about Iran and the Central Asian region in general. The book was first published in 1969. But the main purpose of the book remains as useful today as then. Besides there is no comparable newly published book in its price category. The Jacobsen family is still selling rugs and their reputation continues today as high as ever, a feat in an arcane and exoteric business.

You're wasting your time by buying this book..........1997-09-19

This book is terrible, and one can hardly believe that it's made it to fourth edition. The book was written by a rug salesman in 1969 with the sole purpose of motivating customers to purchase rugs at the salesman's Florida stores. Now that it's 1997 one must even assume that that piece of information is moot due to the fact that unless the salesman is one of the oldest living inhabitants of the U.S., he is most likely pushing up pink flamigos in some Floridian cemetary
