Wonderful Read.......2003-06-13

Ms. Seeton adventures are the best reads that I have come across. I am a thirty something that loves these types of British sleuthing novels. I re-read these novels several times a year, I have them all. The cricket game scene was just so wonderful. I love this book.

What made me enjoy this Miss Seton so much was the description of the cricket! I could actually follow the game, um, match!

Great reference guide.......2007-01-10

By far the best guide available about tramping opportunities in NZ. The track guides are pretty accurate and provide a good overview of what to expect.

A book for the planning Tramper.......2000-04-09

This edition is far better than the previous editions. It's new organization and additional information sections are a marked improvement. A new section on Flora and Fauna gives a highlight of any New Zealand tramp. This book acts as an excellent reference book while tramping. Of course, if the book contained every piece of required information, (i.e. highly detailed maps and every step of the way instructions) it would require 1000's of pages. The authors surmount that difficulty by including instructions on how to obtain additional necessary information. The book is perfect for those that are looking into or planning a backpacking trek to New Zealand.

Easy tramping in New Zealand.......2000-04-04

This is a great book for planning a tramping trip to New Zealand, although it's a bit too much to carry while actually hiking. The book contains good references and maps to the most popular tracks, and some of the lesser known tracks. If your tight on cash, I recommend going to the visitor centers in New Zealand and picking up the DOC pamphlets they supply. D.O.C. has detailed pamphlets on pretty much every track in New Zealand and they only charge about 50 cents (US) for each one. But if you want to plan a trip from home, this is the book to get, it's far easier to understand than the other New Zealand tramping books, and gives good information on what you need to bring. It also gives good info on the New Zealand back country hut system. Buy a hut pass, they're only 35 bucks (US) for a year. It even supplies some decent fly fishing tips for the rivers that border some of the tracks. But be warned that almost every other tourist hiker in New Zealand also has this book, so if you really want to get away from people, you'll have to do some bushwacking.

the extremes tell it all.......2007-10-17

Notice the extremes of the reviews. On one side, "KelleyG" gives it 5 stars and complains about "obvious religious zealots who feel they have a right to shove their beliefs down the throats of everyone else in this country", and 4 Christians give the book 1 star for its anti-Christian themes and statements. They're both right. The book does nice activities, but its strong point is the background info provided for each activity. I value how it asks us to think about living life in the Middle Ages, like how heavy armour would feel, living without modern technology, and how short life spans lowered the marriage age. I can do an activity AND present questions that help my child relate to the Middle Ages. But, the anti-Christian perspective is flawed to the point of giving an inaccurate perception of the Middle Ages. Pointing out the failures of the church is valuable and needed. Ignoring the contributions of the church is historically inaccurate. For example, nearly every expert credits the church as being the only source of learning and scholarship during the Middle Ages. The handwritten manuscripts of the monks preserved great texts, both Christian and secular, that would have been lost forever. This vital fact is one of many that the authors ignore. Notice that "manuscript" is nowhere in the index, but "minds, open vs. closed" is an index entry. I appreciate that the book is more than just page after page of activity in that it provides historical and philosophical points. I really like it, and will use it. But, as a Christian, in the end, as I am using it with my child, I'll also be able to use it as an example of how bias distorts historical accuracy. We'll be able to talk about whether the church-bashing passages are really true, why somebody would write thus, and what is a more accurate position to take. I am absolutely not afraid to point out the failings of the church. I just wish the authors had been willing to consider the valuable contributions, also. If the church defined much of the Middle Ages, then the distortion is inexcusable.

I own the book, I like it, but I'll call it what it is--biased historical perspective--and educate my kids accordingly when we read those passages.

Read the all reviews first!.......2007-05-05

I was really disappointed by this book. It's very anti-Christian, anti-European, anti-Middle Ages, even. Avery Hart is warping history to suit a politicly correct agenda. I hoped to at least get a few craft ideas, but those were unoriginal and not well done. The "make your own code of honor" craft for example didn't even give an example of what a medieval code of honor might have been like. The book, in my opinion at least, is a big waste.

Lots to do!.......2007-02-13

Make sure you're ready to take on craft projects when you get this book, you'll be inspired to build castles and family crests!

Anti-Christian Zealotry at its worst.......2006-07-04

Apparently Christianity is at the root of all evil and the cause of most misfortune that occurred in the middle ages. If it weren't for those darned Christians, it seems the world would be a much better place. St. Frances of Assis was ok, (he loved animals), but all the rest of the Christians were closed-minded, violent and supersititous. I wasn't aware that the church wouldn't let people read because it might confuse them and that many people became monks because they didn't want to go to war.

I wish I had read all the reviews before purchasing this item, and I have definitely learned my lesson. I would never allow my children to read this trash.

Excellent for Modern-Day Thought and Practice.......2005-11-21

Ignore the obvious religious zealots who feel they have a right to shove their beliefs down the throats of everyone else in this country and the world in general: there is absolutely nothing wrong with a child learning about the realities of the middle ages, which was an era heavily influenced by the Catholic church. An adult subject matter, albeit an opportunity for quality parenting, this era was dominated by the church and many superstitious and malinformed beliefs we hold true today stem from this era of intolerance and brutality against human kind and religious freedom.

This book is a wonderful and refreshing guide to learning about the middle ages, and offers a perspective on the era which allows children to ask questions and open their minds to the possibilities of the belief systems of other people and families. Children asking their parents questions based upon moral ground and religious belief is extremely healthy, and it offers up an opportunity for parents to parent their children the way they decide to parent their children. This is especially true if your family happens NOT to be Christian, as non-Christians in this era were treated rather harshly (i.e. the Crusades of Christians against Muslims and Jews).

The activities are creative and allow children to begin an inquisitive mindset geared toward futher want of learning about the middle ages. In general, this is a fine place to start and it opens a pathway for learning more about the era. There are other books available with better and more indepth activities, however this book offers a balanced introduction to the times. Combine this with whatever religious classes or teachings your family traditions, and further the lessons with trips to museums to view tactile and artistic representations of the people of the middle ages, along with writings from poets and authors of the times for an even-keeled and well-balanced cirriculum.

Old but useful.......2005-09-10

The version I ordered used was very old, I can't remember if the publishing date was listed. Regardless, it is useful. Varieties change so quickly, and nurseries often change their supplier. The overall layout is not updated and easy to read (numbered steps and lists, more whitespace). The content is very applicable to Houston in my almost 2 years of experience and use of several other Texas gardening books that have been too broad in scope (the climate varies here!).

A Garden Book for Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast by River.......2001-09-04

I have employed this book for over twenty-five years and attribute my lovely gardens to it's advice. I will be ordering the new edition as I have relocated to the Gulf area once again after many years on the Eastern seaboard,but now I am in Florida. Still, the month by month instruction for garden maintenance, plantings, pruning, fertilizing etc. will work in my area of Florida. I highly recommend this to any gardener along the Gulf Coast.

An Essential Book for Houston Gardeners.......2000-04-24

This is a terrific all-around gardening book for the Houston/East Texas Gardener written by the premier Houston gardening club. It is probably good for the whole Gulf Coast too, since the climates are similar. As an ex-northeasterner and novice gardener, I can say that if you are gardening in Houston and can only buy one book, this is it.

The text covers everything from herbs to flowers to trees, as well as potting, lawns, ground covers, vines, shrubs and vegetables. Special sections concentrate on Azaleas, Camellias and Roses, as well as soil improvement, watering, drainage, diseases and insects. In each section, tables list best planting times, blooming times, light and wattering requirements and other comments for each type of plant.

I found the book great for brain-storming, as well as for carrying to the garden store to determine if the great-looking flower or vine was really suitable for planting in my backyard.

My only regret: that it's not 50 pages longer...

My neighbor lent me his copy of this book and I read through the whole book in one night. The next day I came to see if Amazon had this book and ordered a copy for myself immediately. This book has answered so many of my questions and I know will be treasured for the rest of my days, or at least the rest of my days in Houston. I would recommend this book to anyone living in the Houston area who is contemplating gardening, or even owning a tree or a lawn. Invaluable information for a unique area.

Very few books are this specific to help those of us with such variable, indecisive & unpredictable weather! Many photos and illustrations to help identify plants, pests and best practices. Wide range of topics from start (garden planning) to finish (harvesting). Book helps not only new gardeners, but those still learning - as well as new Houstonians. Large, glossy pages makes for easy and interesting reading. Even if you don't live in Houston, but in a Southern (just a tad north of a coastal) area, you won't want to miss out on this book!

A compelling story about a beautiful black mother strugging to meet the demands of her mentally-challenged son while trying to fulfill her own personal ambitions. Even a balance between these two worlds seemed impossible, and it would have been, for someone else. But Marty's love, determination, and friendship with a white man made it all possible.

Very good reading and very good writing. Put this book at the top of your must-read list.

Sequins and Sorrow.......2003-08-10

I strongly recommend the book, SEQUINS AND SORROW, by Marty Diamond and Erica Stux to anyone who still believes in the human spirit and the power of love!! The book relates the true story of Marty Diamond, who literally "danced" her way through some of life's most challenging circumstances! Erica Stux transports the reader immediately into Ms. Diamond's world in the first page of the book as she describes the first day of school for Corky, Ms. Diamond's son, who is mentally challenged. Corky is forced to attend an alternative school, a school for the "handicapped". Throughout the entire book, the reader is drawn into the drama with Ms. Diamond. At first, the reader may be quietly pulling for the protaganist,but soon the reader realizes that Ms. Stux and Ms. Diamond are actually pulling the reader into this true life tale of love and love's persistence! I strongly recommend this book for individuals who require a dose of "modern heroism". Books of this nature, with excellent prose; interesting conflicts; and unexpected resolutions prove over and over again:
"Life IS more exciting than fiction."

Woman's Determination.......2003-08-08

Marty Diamond tells a powerful tale of her lifelong struggles; if you want to read an inspiring book of a black woman's triumph over hardships then this is the book for you.
Marty deals with the challenge of her autistic son in spite of the fact that she gets little support from relatives.

One has to admire Marty's resilience and fertile mind which guided her through the sharp turns of life. She became an exotic dancer, wrote music, opened her own antique shop and continued to thrive throughout her life, even though obstacles continually besieged her.

With only the help of books, she fashioned her own training techniques to help her autistic son learn to take care of himself. She enabled her son to develop empathy and compassion which is rare for people with such problems. Marty's story is well worth reading. There were questions that remain unanswered for me, and I ended up wondering about her lack of relationships with women, as well as wanting to know more about her support system.
