Book Description
General Editor: A. D. Smith Morphological Investigations of Single Neurons in Vitro Edited by Gloria E. Meredith and Gordon W. Arbuthnott Morphological Investigations of Single Neurons in Vitro brings together a variety of applications for isolated preparations. Although in vitro preparations have long yielded valuable data in physiological and pharmacological studies, their anatomical power has only recently come to light. Presented in this volume is a collection of methods which show all the major advantages of the Golgi technique while lacking many of its pitfalls. All procedures involve the intracellular filling of individual neurons and in some, previous tracing experiments identify the cells, while others select the neurons physiologically. The outlined methods are practical since `preselected' neurons can be filled and analysed in bulk and the results are beautiful, as demonstrated by 8 pages of colour plates. Applications range from invertebrate ganglia to neurons in human autopsy tissue. The necessary equipment and materials are noted in most contributions and detailed instructions can be found in 24 different protocols grouped conveniently in the final chapter. This timely handbook should prove invaluable to all neuroscience workers whenever they seek to discover new details of neuronal morphology.

Frommer's Walt Disney World & Orlando 2006.......2006-07-13
Hi folks!
Once again Frommer's was a life-saver for me and my family. This is the third trip (two to Europe) that we take using all the information provided in Frommer's travel guides.
All the tips and information were most reliable and we were able to do much before having planned our outings according to the book.
I strongly recommend it!
Book Description
Part political disquisition, part travel journal, part self-exploration, Seek is a collection of essays and articles in which Denis Johnson essentially takes on the world. And not an obliging, easygoing world either; but rather one in which horror and beauty exist in such proximity that they might well be interchangeable. Where violence and poverty and moral transgression go unchecked, even unnoticed. A world of such wild, rocketing energy that, grasping it, anything at all is possible.
Whether traveling through war-ravaged Liberia, mingling with the crowds at a Christian Biker rally, exploring his own authority issues through the lens of this nation's militia groups, or attempting to unearth his inner resources while mining for gold in the wilds of Alaska, Johnson writes with a mixture of humility and humorous candor that is everywhere present.
With the breathtaking and often haunting lyricism for which his work is renowned, Johnson considers in these pieces our need for transcendence. And, as readers of his previous work know, Johnson's path to consecration frequently requires a limning of the darkest abyss. If the path to knowledge lies in experience, Seek is a fascinating record of Johnson's profoundly moving pilgrimage.
Customer Reviews:
Hippie realities underdone in our literature.......2004-01-05
That's one of the main reasons I really like Denis Johnson. He is an evolution of Jack Kerouac, minus the jazz and plus the confusion. He's a Jack Kerouac who could live a stable life and write about America after making a living on his books. Hippies comprise a large percentage of America's soulful reality. It's there you find the dead-end dreamers and romantics. Hemingway these days is in the Peace Corps or selling LSD on some parking lot. I also like the parts about Africa and Kuwait. Johnson, you can send me a postcard anytime from anywhere.
Brilliant.......2003-08-06
Denis Johnson's writing seems to be at its best here. Full of simple, beautiful prose, and suspene, "Seek" is enjoyable the whole way through. The stories, or essays if you can call them that, are so vivid that you really get a sense while reading it that there are other people living right now all over the world. I hope that makes sense, but it is really true. Espescially great about this book is how pertinent the news Denis Johnson reported on so long ago is resurfacing again now. Seek gives such a brutal, interesting perspective on Iraq, Afghanistan, and Liberia, all places that we as Americans owe ourselves to know more about anyways. Reading this book fills with me with a sense of adventure I haven't felt since reading the Hardy Boys when I was eight.
Seeker's Progress.......2001-08-09
Denis Johnson is that rare and wonderful thing: a lyrical writer with a brain. This is a collection of non-fiction essays he has published over the last 20 years, and it should win him many new fans who aren't familiar with his acclaimed fiction and poetry. The title, "Seek", is well chosen. Johnson presents himself as a seeker after truth, both physical and metaphysical. He brings with him an open mind, an open heart and genuine humility. "The Civil War in Hell" shows his visit to the heart of darkness of the Liberian civil war, where he views along with other journalists a videotape of the torture of the nations former dictator. The funny "Down Hard Six Times", an account of his honeymoon/gold-prospecting trip to Alaska is both a cautionary tale and a celebration of wilderness. The amazing "Hippies" is an exorciating satire of a drug-addled gathering of aging flower-children over Independence Day. He writes an amazinglyly sympathetic account of a Kenneth Copeland "Bikers for Jesus" rally: Johnson, who defines himself as a Christian, finds genuine religiosity among the weirdness. "Three Deserts" has some of the best writing about the American west I have ever encountered (Johnson lives full-time in northern Idaho.) The high point of the book for me is the stunning "The Militia in Me." Here Johnson gets past the hysteria about "right-wing militias" and, without minimizing their anti-semitism and extremism, sees them as within the well-established tradition of American anti-government, pro-freedom orneriness. In many ways, the West really is a different country and Johnson is well-aware of this, more so than many a provincial Eastern writer. This is a terrific book. Buy it immediately.
Desperately seeking something.......2001-08-07
As the great author and prophet Copernicus again notes, human beings are pattern-seekers. They opt to give up richness of possibility in trade for predictability and familiarity. Even though none of these patterns ever fits any better than Cinderella's slipper fit her stepsisters. Human beings seek rigid, simple patterns that defy and impoverish their dynamic, multifaceted capacity. The one pattern that human beings have locked themselves into is the simple, rigid pattern of "God," even though there are many other patterns to use, including many that better accommodate their fluid, complexity. What "God" this may be is unclear, since they all seem to talk about the same one and since there have been at least 2,500 Gods concocted and documented during human history. Denis Johnson takes us to some of the margins of human society, where the only common theme is a desperate, fruitless, and vicious seeking -- the harshness and the brutality backed up by this ubiquitous "God." If we want to see the inadequacy of this pattern and start looking for better ones -- more congruent with our design and potential -- Denis Johnson's book might be one that begins to open our eyes.
Back in Form.......2001-05-21
After the slightness of THE NAME OF THE WORLD, and the somewhat scattered ALREADY DEAD, Johnson returns to the form that made JESUS' SON such a classic in this collection of articles. The standout is hands-down the last piece on his f**cked-up experiences in Liberia. Also good are the glimpses you get into Johnson's personal life, including his marriage and subsequent honeymoon in the wilds of Alaska, where they try to pan for the gold from which they plan to fashion their wedding rings; the highly disorganized hippie festival he goes to; the bikers for Jesus; his short piece on his brief stint as a Boy Scout. If you're already a Johnson fan, SEEK is cause for celebration.

Book Description
Rich selection of album quilt designs known as Baltimore Bride's designs, ideal not only for quilting but for a variety of arts and crafts purposes. This book contains designs, mostly florals, for 81 different quilt blocks and borders, offering quilters, artists and craftspeople a dazzling selection of motifs.
Customer Reviews:
Good depending on your use.......2004-04-06
I was hopeful that this book might add a different aspect to my other quilting books. There are no instructions for the patterns...though any quilter with any experience could easily put the designs together. Also, the patterns are not to size, that is unless you prefere miniature quilts. All of the designs are sketched on a page, some have 2 to a page, and are all in black and white. There are no pictures of any of the completed designs. If you plan to use this book for quilting it would make for a complicated quilting motif.
Here is what I will probably do with it:
1. Make a copy of a design so that I can use colored pencils to help me visualize the pattern I want to make. (Keep the book clean!)
2. Make an enlarged copy (or 2) to make freezer paper templates to use in the applique design.
Someone only interested in the designs could also use them to make cards, embroidery, quilting motifs, and possibly decorate other artful crafts.
Having said that, had I seen this book in the store I would most likely NOT have purchased it but since I have I will make the most out of it. This is definitely not for a beginner quilter who would need and appreciate directions and guidance on putting the designs together. However, I think that it will be a helpful aid in the future.
Great addition to Baltimore patterns.......2000-06-22
This book is a great addition to the Baltimore Album style patterns you already have. There are no instructions just blocks showing the patterns. I enlarged them to fit my block size and many of them I have not seen any where else. There are also border ideas shown toward the back. I think this is a good book and a wonderful asset to any quilter's library.
Book Description
Good night, sweet Prince-and Lady and Duke! Dogs spend between 12 and 16 hours a day snoozing, and their devoted owners are only too happy to accommodate these tuckered pups with upholstered baskets, monogrammed pillows, even designated spots on the down duvet in the master bedroom. Featuring the napping nests of a cross section of sleepy canines, Where Sleeping Dogs Lie shows how our pooches are such creatures of comfort that they find cozy slumber spots in the most unexpected places.
Opening with a foreword by Law & Order star and dog lover Elisabeth Röhm, the book includes sneak peeks at beautiful dreamers of almost every breed catching some Zs on the beach, in the snow, and by the fireplace. On the more practical side, William Berloni, the Humane Society's director of animal behavior (and Broadway's go-to trainer), discusses a dog's need for sleep and security. The book concludes with a useful resource guide to products that will provide your dog with top-flight shut-eye. AUTHOR BIO: Founded in 1904, the HUMANE SOCIETY OF NEW YORK has provided care and protection to the animals of the city of New York for the past century.
JULIA SZABO pens the "Pets" column for the Sunday New York Post. She is a frequent contributor to House Beautiful, Country Living, and Departures. Szabo shares her home with five rescued dogs and several rescued cats.

Fountain pens from 1870s through 1950s.......2001-12-04
A beautifully produced small book with more than 100 color photos of fountain pens from the United States, Germany, Great Britain, and Italy. Included are pens designed by Waterman, Parker, Montblanc, Shaeffer, Omas, Ancora, and Pelikan.
While the short history of fountain pens and pen manufacturer histories are in English, the photo captions are in both English and Italian. The history of fountain pens and the artisans who developed them is drawn with a broad stroke from Egyptian history to the 1950s, including the 1884 patent by Waterman for the first truly workable ink feed fountain pen, the fountain pen's heyday in the 1920s, and its resurgence over the past few years.
A brief history of several pen manufacturers concludes the book, and includes a look at United States makers Waterman, Parker, Shaeffer, Wahl-Eversharp, and Conklin; German manufacturers Montblanc and Pelikan; English-United States maker Mabie Todd; English designer Conway Stewart; and the Italian firms of Aurora, Omas, Ancora, and Columbus.
A nice reference book and eye candy for the collector and an inexpensive introductory text for those looking at beginning collecting. Nothing in the book talks about how to collect and the like. This is just a pretty book with photos of some exquisitely made fountain pens.

Is your garden reminiscent of a classic grande dame in need of some extra TLC? For the yard version of cosmetic surgery, turn to The Landscape Makeover Book, a helpful manual full of step-by-step photos, planning guides, and practical suggestions. Covering projects both big and small, this guide shows you how to add a pool or patio, prune generations-old shrubs for increased health and vigor, and top off that pesky tree that makes your gutters overflow every October. Have an unknown vine taking over the backyard? Useful charts will help you to identify those pesky plants and learn to use their low-maintenance talents to your advantage--or get rid of them entirely. Plenty of glossy photographs add a designer's touch to the down-and-dirty detail in these pages, but in general, those looking specifically for design inspiration will need to look elsewhere. There are only two types of classic garden design mentioned, Colonial and Victorian, but the authors do provide extensive help in priority setting and planning. While it may seem obvious to not reseed the lawn before adding a walkway, haven't we all found ourselves in similar situations with home-improvement projects? The section on reshaping beds is particularly useful, with plenty of attention given to individual plant rejuvenation and precise edge trimming. For those with an empty lot of dirt and grass, you'll need information other than what this book dishes out. But if you're facing an overgrown garden that looks like it really may have been a showstopper at one point, this is the guide that will help you in staging a glorious comeback. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
The median age of the American home is 30 years. Consequently, many homeowners do not enjoy a perfect yard: the landscape may be overgrown or in need of a facelift. Professional landscaper Sara Jane von Trapp comes to the rescue with an illustrated guide to revamping an old yard without spending a fortune. She covers both overall design possibilities and areas of concern - entries, walkways, decks, lighting, plantings, and lawns - with specific instructions, and also helps readers determine when professional help is needed.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of Inspiration, But Not Much How-To Detail.......2002-03-18
I would say this is a worthwhile book if you are looking for pictures of made-over yards and decks. There are very few "before" pictures and not a lot of detail on how to achieve the results. The process is explained, from planning on paper to renovating walks, concrete stoops, garden beds and plantings.
Examples of various projects are shown in photographs and described in some detail. Pruning and moving shrubs and trees are shown. There is not a lot of specific information about plants. There is a very brief discussion of water features.
This book is a good place to start the process, but unless you already have construction and horticultural skills, you will need additional information to actually complete a project.
for the first time do it yourselfer in the garden.......2001-07-23
This book will serve well for the FIRST TIME DO-IT-YOURSELFER to take on a major remodeling job in the garden.
It goes over everething from the planning to the finishing touches. Tools required are discussed in simple easy to understand language and photographs are also included!
Problems are also discussed- with photographs to help you understand. A good book to have if you are planning to revamp your lanscape!
If You need a whole new renovation read this book.......2000-05-24
If your yard looks like a mess this book tells you how to fix it. It is really not bad and works well.
what else can you say
Sadly Disappointed.......2000-04-21
The book's write up sounds exactly what I was looking for, ideas on updating existing landscapes. Needless to say I was disappointed. There was nothing new that a gardener would not have already have read in Southern Living or Country Home Gardens magazines. Its fine for a glance at Barnes and Noble with a cup of coffee, but don't waste your money taking it home.

Book Description
Window shopping
In postwar America, everything pointed to a bright, shiny future. Sheer optimism and opulence informed everything from automobile design to architecture, infusing design with larger-than-life planes and curves. Storefront design of the era is particularly indicative of this phenomenon, incarnated here in an extensive collection of hand-illustrated shop window designs from 1938 to 1950. These spectacular, often grandiose plans for grocery stores, shoe shops, beauty salons, bakeries, and more are reminders of a time when stores were sacred shrines for the congregation of American shoppers--impressive and even slightly intimidating, just like the future itself. Collected for this unique book, the designs viewed in retrospect reveal the mindset of a unique period in history. In addition to an extensive selection of drawings are historical black and white photographs of actual shops built in a similar style. Shop America offers a rare look at mid-century commercial America as it pictured itself.
Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2007-06-16
I was disappointed in this book. The best picture is the one on the cover. Inside, each selection is pretty much the same. "Style suggestion for a florist shop," "Style suggestion for a shoe store," etc. Has diagrams and font types, window measurements, etc. All tech stuff that's not really interesting to me. I would have returned it, but didn't want to mess with the shipping. Sigh.
American Business Embraces Modernism.......2007-04-29
In the midst of the Great Depression, American Business adopted an American form of modernism that heralded a new age of technology and progress. This period of design history is sometimes called, "Machine Age", "Streamline Modern" or "Midcentury Modern." This belief in the spirit of progress can be seen in almost all American design of this period.
"Shop America" adds to our understanding of the time by focusing on store front design. American glass companies produced beautifully illustrated catalogs that promoted the use of glass and modern building materials. These catalogs inspired architects and small business owners to create store fronts that embraced the progressive spirit of modernism.
When many of us think of the 1940's and 1950's, we think of a conformist age best understood by old television shows like Ozzie and Harriet and Father Knows Best. However, a book like "Shop America" also demonstrates that American business and consumers of the time were willing to adopt a bold modernist vision. Although the designs in these books are 50-60 years old, they are still very fresh and exciting.
This book was produced by the German Publisher, Taschen. Like all Taschen books it is a very good value. It is a large format book with very high production values. This book is a must purchase for all enthusiasts of the period as well as for contemporary architects and designers. Highly recommended.
Streamline meets Atomic on Main.......2007-03-18
Turn the pages of this fascinating book and you're window shopping on Main Street in the late forties, plenty of consumer goods are just a touch away thanks to large glass windows. The essence of the book is more than ninety ideas for storefronts created by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Each has an artists rendering, sometimes a technical detail or floor plan and technical information about the glass used.
It is the exuberant artwork that makes the book come alive. They capture a mid-century of elegant shoppers seduced by Carrara glass and Aluminum. Virtually every store has an overall streamline design frequently mixing atomic motifs and the final individual touch is the name in a modern sans type or a casual script for a ladies retail unit. Strangely there is no actual reference to the Pittsburgh PGC or the artists though E A Lundberg has his signature on many of the illustrations.
This is a large book (handsomely designed and printed) that fortunately makes all the wonderful renderings large too. In the first few pages Steve Heller contributes an overview of storefront design illustrated with black and white photos of real stores in large American cities. Predictably few of them are as flamboyant as the concept artwork in the glass-makers sales material.

Great Pictures of "Ethnic" Restaurants - All Japanese.......1999-08-30
This book presents a collection of beautiful interior designs of high-class "ethnic" restaurants but all of the restaurants are in various parts of Japan and are done by Japanese designers. If you want a look into what Japanese designers are doing these days with the ethnic motif, then you are in for a treat.Much of the renditions on the "ethnic" theme would seem radically new to the Western eye. But if you are looking for hints about how to decorate your ethnic restaurant inexpensively, you will be disappointed. Not one of these interiors could have been done without the help of a designer earning a six-figure salary. Printed by a Japanese publisher, the text is in both English and Japanese. This book was a disappointment for me, not because it was poor in any way but because I live in Japan and was looking for some pictures of the truely ethnic so that I could make Japanese renditions out of them.As it happened, that rendition had already been made.

Book Description
Veronica Brodie is an Aboriginal woman of Ngarrindjeri-Kaurna descent. She grew up at Raukkan near Victor Harbor and until the mid-sixties lived under the Aborigines Protection Board. Later, after training as a nurse, marrying, having five children and recovering from alcoholism, Veronica Brodie was involved in the Hindmarsh Island Bridge affair, on the side of the Ngarrindjeri women who knew of the secret women's business and sought to stop the construction of the bridge. Veronica Brodie is now a respected Aboriginal elder who works to help her people remember and value their culture and traditions. This is her story.
