Customer Reviews:
Disappointing & Inaccurate Hotel Descriptions.......2007-07-28
This is my first time purchasing a "rough guide" book. Our travel group had several different books and was consistently disappointed by the inaccurate descriptions of hotels. For instance, one hotel was located RIGHT on the airport runway at one of the islands - without mention from the book. The location of hotels and destinations near those hotels was also WAY off - specifically in San Pedro. Luckily, we had two other guide books to reference.
I judged the book by it's cover and pictures and regret it. I will not use this book series again.
very handy.......2007-04-10
this book did cover low bidget places and was very handy. it also covered more upscale loactions but did indicate that quite well. (we visited Belize 10/06). the prices were pretty accurate and the reviews as well.
one of our favorite places in san pedro was a 'hole in the wall' almost literally that this book recomended. it cost about $1 american for 2 of us to have breafast (home made belizian style breakfast tacos) and we would get a slice of homemade cake to take with us for lunch. we also stayed at rubies and breakfasted there often. rubies was definetly the best stay for the money.
we also used this book in san ignacio and found it extremely helpful and again in belize city (belmead i think). it told us everything we needed to know.
i higly recomend this book for any savy low budget traveler.
Okay but outdated.......2007-04-06
We took a trip to Belize at the end of '05/beg of '06. The info in this book was a little outdated and not very useful. Save yourself the trouble and buy the Lonely Planet, that's the only book you need.
Book Description
This unique reference equips students with vocabulary skills that will last a lifetime. Students study Latin and Greek roots and learn the huge number of English words that derive from them. The impressive number of entries and explanations, presented in a light and non-threatening manner, will give students the vocabulary boost they need.
Customer Reviews:
WONDERFULL.......2007-01-21
This book is the best book I ever bought. There are all the words in the world and their Latin root. It says clear definitions and has many other features. I think you should buy it.
Great tool for vocabulary.......2003-10-09
This book, more than any other I have used in my educational career, helps you understand the roots of the English language. English is widely known to be one of the most difficult languages to master because of the lack of common rules. This helps one to understand the roots of words and gives the reader/user links between words that normally would not be obvious. I use this excellent teaching and learning tool often, and my students benifit from it.
Jay missed the point!.......2002-09-21
I have found this book to be very helpful studying Latin and Greek roots. This is not a Latin textbook, as Jay Chang was probably looking for (he seemed to be looking for e-mail friends more than anything), and if he thought so from the title then he needs to study more English. My students (Graduate level English majors) love this book, we all find it very helpful because of the way it specifically traces roots in each words breakdown allowing the reader to understand many more words that are related. If you are looking to expand your English vocabulary and your understanding of the roots of our language, this is the best book I have found.
"Avoid this Volume".......2001-11-23
This so-called dictionary has very few entries to begin with; and the representation of both the Greek and Latin words, along with how they were integrated into the Enlgish language is quite unclear as well. For anyone seeking to begin understanding the roots and growth of the English language, this is certainly not a volume of primary recommendation. Instead, look for the Chambers Dictionary of Etymology, or Raymond E. Laurita's 1001 Affixes and their meanings.
Not for serious readers.......2000-06-11
As a Latin learner, no doubt I'm interested in etymology. I picked up this book for the title and the publisher. They betrayed me. This work ,certaily, contains Latin and Greek origins and their derivatives, but doesn't mention any grammarical points without which we cannot grasp the morpholgy of Latin or Greek derived English words. Further, the vocabulary index at the end of it counts only 2,000 or so. I can list more than that without any preparation, ad-lib. You can find more authentic information even in [Wheelock's Latin]. I'd rather recommend [The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language], which is the best for English etymology. So if you are a serious reader, forget this book.
However, this work has easy-to-read format and some cartoon-like illustrations. I guess this is intended for the senior elementary school students. They will enjoy this book while constructing essential vocabulary. That's why I give 3 stars.
P.s. I want to have e-mail friends. Male, 22, medical student. Anybody interested send e-male to me.

133 wonderful ornate Victorian pieces from German sources; florals, geometrics; borders; corner pieces; bird motifs, etc.
Customer Reviews:
Great Resource for Stencilers and Designers.......2006-10-04
If you like the floral, leaf, and scroll designs which are typical of the Victorian era, then you will love this book! Patterns appear on both sides of the pages, so they will need to be copied before being cut as stencils. Most of the 113 patterns are large enough to be used as is. Others may need to be enlarged a bit. I liked every pattern in the book, which is rare for me. It's well worth the investment!
Book Description
124 authentic stencil patterns for ready use by today's artists, craftsmen, designers, decorators, and students.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2006-10-06
This book has 124 beautiful patterns that include florals, foliage, fruit, scrolls, and even a few animals. Designs need to be scanned, traced, or otherwise copied, as they are printed on both sides of the pages. Some patterns are simple, a few are complex, but most tend to be of intermediate difficulty to cut. I would enlarge some of the patterns and make a few smaller, but almost all of the designs can be reproduced at the sizes in the book. This is an essential book for the Victorian decorator, and is a wonderful complement to Edmund V. Gillon's book, Victorian Stencils for Design and Decoration.
Book Description
It is generally accepted that English Setters were present and used for hunting over 400 years ago. Today they continue to be one of the more popular hunting breeds and have made their mark in the show ring.

Down-to-earth interviews and insights.......2003-12-12
Black-and-white photographs pepper The History Of English Setter Showdogs In America, a historical account authoritatively written by Graig S. Sparkes who is an experienced and successful breeder of champion English Setters. Down-to-earth interviews and insights, as well as first hand testimony from professional handlers, fill the pages of this excellent read which is especially recommended for anyone involved with the breeding, training and showing of English Setters.

For any Bronica collector, this book is a must. It covers in great detail the conception of Bronica, its name, the development of the product, and how the originals set the course for the latest and highly successful Bronica camera systems.
Customer Reviews:
Bronica History.......2005-12-24
This book is the best and definitive review of the early history of Bronica, and avoids the mistakes of previous publications by using source material and information.
The author has also discovered models, (Like the 'P' which never existed, but was a typographic error!)and prototypes of the rangefinder cameras, as well as those with a Carl Zeiss lens.
There is reference to and photos of some of the rarest Nikkor lenses, like the 30mm fisheye and the 50cm rangefinder type in Bronica mount of which only two are believed to exist.
For any serious collector, this is a well researched, thorough book, with how to use section if you have one of the cameras and no instruction book, and is a 'must have' publication.

Book Description
Reading, writing an inflected language, and composing an argument were among the skills taught in Greco-Roman schools. At all three curricular levels students developed these skills by learning how to use a literary form known as the chreia, or anecdote. Beginners at the primary level learned to read and write by copying different examples of the chreia. Students at the secondary level used it to learn how to decline nouns and conjugate verbs and form them into grammatically correct sentences. Advanced students learned how to elaborate a simple chreia into an eight-paragraph essay that argued for the truth of whatever saying or action was celebrated in the chreia. This volume incorporates thirty-six texts, most translated for the first time, that illustrate the use of the chreia at all three levels, a use that can be documented from the first century on through late antiquity and the Byzantine world. It demonstrates that people with all levels of education were intimately familiar with this important literary form, which not only preserves the wit and wisdom of famous philosophers, orators, kings, and poets but also explains its pervasive and enduring use in ancient literature.

Poor introduction and a so-so reference.......2007-06-27
As many reviewers have noted, this book is a poor chose for those seeking an introduction to LaTeX. However, I find that I rarely use it as a reference either; it often takes me much longer to find information in this book than on the internet. The index is horribly designed, using the same index for concepts and commands. Finding something in this book feels like finding something in code.
The best guide for everyday use.......2007-02-21
For anyone coming to LaTeX from a background in mathematics many sources of help are available, but it is more difficult for someone coming to it from a feeling of dissatisfaction with the results obtainable with typical WYSIWYG word processors. When you are surrounded by people who think that Word is wonderful and that its equation editor can handle any equations you need, getting to the point with LaTeX where you can use it to advantage may seem more trouble than it is worth. You will probably start with Leslie Lamport's "LaTeX: a document preparation system", but although that is a good and authoritative start it is not really enough, as there is a great deal more to know than can be found in a short book, and in particular you need to know about all that is now available in the form of packages.
Fortunately there are some excellent sources of more detailed information, and two of these stand out: Kopka and Daly's "Guide to LaTeX" and Mittelbach and Goossens's "LaTeX Companion". I acquired both of these about six months ago, but decided to defer posting reviews until I had discovered by experience which of them I actually used more, and the winner is clearly Kopka and Daly, mainly because it is much the easier to find one's way around. It is quite adequate as a complete guide to LaTeX (i.e. you don't really need to start with Lamport, though it's probably a good idea if you do), as the opening chapter on "basics" really is about basics, and the book progresses from there in a reasonably gentle way..
A very very useful book.......2005-06-23
I have been using this book a lot, in the recent months, and I am finding it very useful. I am not *at all* an expert latex user, but I do have decent programming skills, and I usually use a computer for hours every day, so my IT skills are decent, overall. For writing technical documents I have been using for years a fairly dated version of ScientificWorkplace, but I am now slowly switching to do more and more in latex, which gives me greater flexibility. What I usually do now is writing my documents in ScientificWorkplace, and then taking care of formatting and other unusual features editing the documents in Latex, through a program called WinEdt. In almost all cases, when I am in trouble with some commands or options, I find a clear solution in this book. For this reason, if your profile sounds a bit like mine, I would highly recommend this book. The new (fourth) edition also includes extensive references to the "hyperref" package, which is very very useful to create great pdf output that includes links to footnotes/sections/equations etc., bookmarks, and active buttons.
Not the best for absolute beginners, but great reference.......2005-02-07
For starting out in Latex, I recommend one of the many free online tutorials, such as the "not-so-short introduction to Latex". That will get you more than started. This book is a great add-on reference to that, and the level is just right: not too wordy, but easy to follow. It has much deeper coverage of how to do graphics and drawings, how to create a bibliography, how to create postscript and pdf files, etc, in addition to the basics, of course.
Brief, effective introduction to Latex.......2005-01-10
This is an ideal introduction to the TeX line of text formatting tools. It starts with a high level overview of the toolset. Then dives into document construction, then into tables, lists, mathematical formatting, and into user constructions and extensions for bibliographies, as well as other topics. PDF and Postscript formatting is covered. As well as AMS-TeX which is more extensions or mathematical formatting.
On the downside the substance of the text is only two-thirds of the book. Appendices make up the rest. Which necessarily means that the coverage is a little more terse than you would expect for a book this size.
That being said, this is still an excellent introduction to the TeX set of tools for anyone who is just starting out.

Excellent intro to Latex.......2002-12-27
This is the first and only book I read to get me started using Latex to work on my thesis. The book covers just the right amount of depth to get one started on using Latex for technical writing, without getting into other details that might put off a new user.
I have recommended this book to several others who wanted to give Latex a try, and none has not come back with positive comments.

Another volume in Cowley's retrospective.......2004-12-24
Like many literary expatriates of the early 20th century, Malcolm Cowley had a tendency to examine and re-examine his life. He started formalizing this process in his literary history of the 1920s, Exile's Return. Years later, he looked back on the 1930's in The Dream of the Golden Mountains. Taken together, these books show the shifts in thinking that were taking place in the first few decades of the 20th century. Moreover, we see the shifts in Cowley's own life and (importantly) self-identification - an important background for explaining the later Cowley who helped edit Kerouac's On the Road. Here is Cowley flirting with Communism, labor issues, and about everything else anti-thetical to the 1920's commitment to art and not much else. And while it doesn't have the strength of storytelling nor the mix of characters of Exile's Return, the work is interesting in its own right, if for no other reason than for Cowlye's clear perceptions of the issues of his day. Further, this is an important bridge to Cowley's later works and retrospects. As time moved on, Cowley became less literary and more historically and critically oriented. While he continued to produce occasional poems, producing two more editions of Blue Juniata, for example, it seems clear that Cowley was becoming less concerned with forging an identity (artistically) than determining and explaining how he fit into the present scenery. Thus, this book also serves as a mile-marker in the shifting identity of Mr. Cowley.

Book Description
"A memoir that shows the private Malcolm as a man who spoke far more of obedience, moderation, and peace than he did of violence."
--Atlanta Journal & Constitution
Many books have been written about Malcolm X in the three decades since his assassination, but in REMEMBERING MALCOLM, his assistant minister Benjamin Karim reveals an intimately human side of the great leader we have never seen before. Writing with an insider's knowledge and a disciple's devotion, Karim paints an unforgettable portrait of Malcolm X as counselor, minister, healer, and, above all, a dedicated member of his community.
Here is a dramatic account of how Malcolm galvanized the Black Muslims through his tireless work at Harlem's New York Mosque Number Seven in the early 1960s. Here, too, are Karim's affectionate memories of the daily rituals and beliefs that bound Malcolm's people together--the courtship and marriage rites, the strict customs governing relations between men and women, the three-day fasts that ended in sumptuous sundown feasts, the rigorous discipline, and the quiet joys sanctioned by their faith.
REMEMBERING MALCOLM is at once a beautiful memoir about a compelling human being and a vital historical document about one of the true American visionaries of the twentieth century.
"Intriguing behind-the-scenes details."

From the supplier: There are ways by which young African-American people can meaningfully honor Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. One is to hold campus and community teach-ins on their birthdays. This should serve not only to provide a full understanding of the thoughts and contributions of these two great men but also to inspire others to face the challenges of being African-Americans. Another way they can commemorate the lives of Malcolm and Luther King is to serve other people, including those who are not African Americans.
