Great to have a guide that is focused specifically to Old Kyoto. It offers information beyond that of other travel guides and is perfect if you are interested in finding special places that may otherwise be missed. The best book for Kyoto!.......2007-04-23

If you are visiting Kyoto for a few days or more, you need to purchase this book. The author tells you all of the amazing shops to go to that have real history and standing in Kyoto. When visiting these shops, I felt like I stepped into a piece of history. It isn't the only book you will need in Kyoto - I would also get The Rough Guide to Japan and use the Kyoto section or just another travel book on Kyoto that will provide info on temples and shrines. You can also just go to the visitors center at Kyoto station and get maps there. Bottom line: The old stores of Kyoto are slowly being replaced by new construction, so when visiting Kyoto makes sure to bring this book to see more than just temples and shrines !!

Great book to show you the hidden shops and eateries.......2007-04-03

My wife and I used this book all of the time while in Kyoto (Spring 2007). The shops in the book were truly some of the better ones although most were on the expensive side. The price does reflect the quality of the products though. Even though we couldn't afford some of the items it was still fun to window shop.
Some of the shops that aren't on the main streets are hard to find. It is not the fault of this book, its just that the streets aren't labeled in English style letters so you have no idea where you are. In our experience just ask someone in the nearby shops. They are always willing to help and very polite.

This book is much more than a guide. It is a magical trip through the various shops and centres of old Kyoto. I read from cover to cover and am going back for more! The author takes a non-traditional approach to the subject and makes inumerable fascinating asides.
Surely, she has more of these for other places! If not, there is an opening there for someone!

A Must Have For Seeing The Real Kyoto.......2006-06-12

I wanted to visit the old shops of Kyoto, where they have been doing their craft for generations. I was able to find the few shops that I picked out ahead of time. They were all open and many had English literature on their products and history and some even had English speaking employees. So, don't be afraid to visit these charming shops.

I gave it 4 stars because although accurate, the book did not give very detailed directions. The articles provided a small map of the cross streets but when you get into the smaller streets, the signs are not in English. I bought a Osaka-Kyoto Atlas before I went and that was a great help in finding the smaller streets.

The book is full of traditional shops and inns and I would highly recommend buying it. Just do a little planning the night before and buy a good atlas and you will be fine.

This book is easy to navigate, informative, well laid out and very helpful. I've been studying German for some time now and this will forever be a staple in my language library of books.

German verbs in all their forms are difficult for any learner and this book offers repetitive drills that are essential to learning how to use the many German forms. I highly recommend it!

This is similar in format to a high school workbook- which is a great thing. Each chapter focuses on a different type of verb conjugation, providing an explanation and examples before progressing to a series of exercises allowing the reader to put their new knowledge to work (answers can be found in the back of the book). The book is aimed at someone who posseses some basic knowledge of the language; a modest vocabulary and a basic understanding of the simpler facets of the language would be a prerequisite for getting the most from this guide. I am engaging in a course of self study, and after working with some basic online classes and memorizing a few hundred words, I have found this book to be a great asset. When studying from it, I take notes and use my German-English dictionary in addition to '500 German' verbs to better comprehend the lessons and fill in in areas I am unsure of. If you are learning or reviewing German, this is definitely a must-have.

Serves Its Purpose Well.......2000-11-02

This book is not exciting or fancy--no pictures, dialogs, humor, etc.. But if what you want is step-by-step practice with German verbs, then you will find it here. Useful for any student with about half a year of German or more, it provides explanations for most kinds of German verb patterns and conjugations and gives lots of practice. As the first reviewer said, it would go will other courses or programs to provide extra reinforcement in learning the semi-complicated German verb system. It's boring, but hey, it works.

This is a good refresher, starting easy and progressing to the most difficult. It's short, but gives a good number of common verbs, explaining everything as it goes. Would be good for someone brushing up their German, or a student, to use along with a textbook.

Very readable, but a little technical in spots........2001-05-19

This was really a very good book. The breed descriptions were very objective for the most part, and I liked how his training was aimed for useful manners instead of for competition obedience. The problem solving advice was great, too! One of the best things about the book, in my opinion, was the fact that he actually differentiated between show lines and working lines and even explained the difference! One of my pet peeves when it comes to dog books is how most writers ignore or trivialize the differences WITHIN the breed. I'd give him ten stars just for mentioning it... I also loved how he made a point of stating that every dog is different and needs special consideration when training, and that there are tons of workable training methods out there, not just his. I had to give him four stars instead of five, though, because he did use a bit of technical language when describing some dogs. He did eventually explain everything, but the average layman would read the terms 'low nerve threshold' 'sharp' 'defense mechanism' etc, and just go 'Huh?'. But that was the only downside to the book. Other than that, it was terrific!

The book had a lot of breed specifics which was very helpful, but they seem to all end in - all dogs are different you'll have to see for yourself. I would have like the book to give a little more emphasis on the dog breeds themselves so you could have the most information to choose the best dog for you.

If you're going to collect, or already collect hatpins, you should have this book. It is just as informative and interesting as Lillian's books(if you collect you know who she is). This book gives the best history and pictorial history of hatpin manufacturing available. A most valuable quide for those who really enjoy the period hatpin and it's history. Foremost, you never know when you're going to get lucky enough to buy an authentic Charles Horner pin, and when you do-You'll know all about it's travels!

I loved this book. It demonstrated for me the real "art" of gardening. William Morris was a clever and far sighted man who advocated staying within the parameters of nature and natural beauty when making gardens. He also perpetuated the "garden room" theme which has been enormously popular since the eighteeth century. I refer to this book continuously and strive to design and construct garden rooms in my own garden which are as beautiful.

One man's dream of decency and dignity.......2005-01-12

Dr. Magnus O. Bassey brings Malcolm X back to life for those who were not fortunate enough to have heard him when he was alive. Malcolm started his life in poverty, saw his father lynched, spent a great deal of time in foster care and finally went to prison, but was able to rise from the rubble and become one of America's foremost leaders. He frequently said pushing for civil rights was not what Afro-Americans should be about, but rather they should be pushing for human rights because then their plight could be brought to the United Nations as well as getting buy-in from African leaders. He wanted to show the world what the mighty, democratic America was doing to her very own citizens.

Malcolm started out with Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam, but after traveling to Mecca and other places outside the United States, he became more interested in worldwide human rights. Even today Malcolm's Organization of Afro-American Unity is real and relative to our times. He outlines how Afro-Americans should organize, what their goals should be and how those goals can be accomplished. It would be so helpful in the ongoing struggle for human rights if more people were familiar with his work.

Dr. Bassey has written a concise, informational book that everyone in the country needs to be aware of, in order to set aside some of the myths about the condition of this country and its stand or lack thereof, for human rights. He covered Malcolm's life in an unbiased manner, covering both his good points and those that weren't so good, such as referring to whites as devils early in his career. I found the book to be a wonderful resource for those details you'd like to remember forever but can't. It is a book that I will keep as a reference for information on Malcolm X.
