Excellent presentation of arguments, although some of the central ideas have been challenged since it's publication. Evoltionary ancestors of microtubules may have been found in pro-karyotes.

Another Hit for the Mother/Son Team.......2002-03-13

Well. I would not have been terribly suprised had this turned out to be a great book. Nonetheless, I was pleasently so when I realized I actually enjoyed it as much as Microcosmos. I don't know how much of which author went into what--and that does not really seem to matter. The ideas flow easily and evenly--the biology is straightforward and understandable, and the chronology seems (at least for me) easy to follow. In my humble opinion, another excellent book, and a must for any real thinkers library. I have mine..where's yours?

Guide to the Cayman's.......2007-05-29

This little guide book is a good item to have if you have never traveled to the Cayman Islands before. It is a bit outdated but still a good back up. Don't atke all the recommendations to heart. They tell you to skip "Hell" the end of the island but I think the short trip is worth it, but the airport stores accually have better T shirts than can be had on site.
Beware: The Caymans are VERY expensive to visit and with the US dollar only being worth .75 to each Cayman dollar, your money does not go far. Be prepared to spend over $1000 to eat for a week, for 2 people and you won't be eating very big!

We love the book so far. Really helps us to plan when to go, what our best options are, and how to go about arranging the best plans. Great compact size, but still full of details about accommodations, diving, snorkeling, and transportation. I'd get a Frommer's Compact Guide to every place we visit if I could. My wife insists on Eyewitness Guides whenever possible, because of the incredible photos that help us know what we want to see, but this Frommer's book tells us how to practically do those things.

This is a good little reference book that helped with our trip planning. I found it covered a good range of topics and was satisfied and would recommend it.

Very Handy Reference.......2005-08-29

This book was a great reference of where to go and where not to go. We were able to plan our whole trip using the book and had a great time. Unfortunately some of the places mentioned for dinner are still closed due to the last hurricane that really did some damage there. If you are traveling make sure you check the websites or with your hotel when you get there before you take a drive out!

Great guide To the Caymans.......2004-07-07

This guide was very useful in planning my trip. The reviews of resturants and other locations were very helpful and up to date. Hell IS over-rated!! It's almost pocket size, so it's handy to have with you to look up general information while you are on your trip. Have a great trip!!

After my 3 year old got through the romantic and child presentations of pirates he really liked this book because he's in the "why" phase. This book explains a lot of practicalities of being a pirate in a way young kids can understand.

I bought this book for a homeschool unit study on Pirates and it is wonderful. The pictures are beautiful and the book itself is very informative. It does contain a lot of "new" vocabulary words, but the book also includes a glossary.

A Pirate's Life for Me!: A Day Aboard a Pirate Ship.......2003-09-10

This book is so popular on the Seacoast of New Hampshire because, the real-life pirate of Brownie Macintoch, performer and songwriter, comes along with this book. He and Julie are a fixture of children's summer entertainment. (Check out www.juliebrownie.com)This book is a realistic portrait of a pirate without the details that are not necessary for young children. If this book interests a child, more books are available that have "those kinds" of details and others that are more gentle.

It Could Be Better!!!.......2003-08-09

First off I want to say I loved the sea chanty tape. The book would have been better if it had a story line or gave more explanations. I've been reading about pirates for a few years, and I know some of the statements were wrong according to the books I've read. However the pictures are colorful and bright. And most young children would enjoy this simple book about pirates even though it's not quite cohesive or accurate. I will recommend this book for the younger children who are interested in piracy and need an introduction to history. A few months ago I read an excellent novel to my 5th grade granddaughter that was based on documentation and included photos. It was titled THE DIARY OF A SLAVE GIRL, RUBY JO and was about the week Blackbeard and his men on 4 ships held Charlestonians hostage to obtain medicine for his crews.That book had a good story, wonderful slave children characters, was funny, and entertaining! I recommend that one to anyone 10 and up.

Great Pirate Book!.......2003-08-07

My 9 year old son (who loves pirate stories) and I enjoy this book so much. It offers a true depiction of pirate life with some graphic details that have made my son want to read other books containing pirate history and lore. I think the best children's books are the ones that make kids want to keep on reading and learning. I highly recommend this book.

This is a model garden book. The superb photographs provide the backbone of the book. The text is short, not filled out with unecessary words copied from other garden books as is often the case. The photos show what is working in other peoples' gardens and are replete with good ideas.

This book is very inspiring, brilliant and incredibly colorful. It showcases some of the great variety of gardens, and also points out the challenges that face the gardener in this northern most New England state. It is well designed, with many large photos, and the reading is very easy, but informative. The photos have been choosen to inspire and delight, and the captions are hardworking-explaining tasks and identifying the plants. A very beautiful piece of work!

Nice book but with it's share of flaws........2001-07-31

This is a fairly good and helpful book on gardening in Maine. Being a citizen of Maine myself I know a thing or two about gardening up here, for instance there is a very short season here. If you have trouble gardening, no matter what type, being herb, vegetable, spices, fruits, or even trees this book will most likely give you some long awaited answers. This book even shows you how to garden indoors for those times you don't feel like getting eaten by bugs. So if you love gardening then this is a fairly good choice, but look into some other books first.

Buy It and then Buy It Again.......2007-06-19

As an absolute lover of music, I have come to miss that era of the vinyl album cover, when we rushed to the record store and purchased someone's long awaited first or follow up album. We then rushed home and played it on the old component set while reading the liner notes on the back of the album. This book reminded me of that time and many pages were a nice walk down memory lane for this music lover. I guess if I had a complaint, perhaps the authors could have divided the book up into genres as opposed to time period. It would have been nice to see various R&B, Country, Blues, Rock, Disco albums.

I will say this, when I saw it in the store- I bought all five copies and then used them for eventual gifts to people. Everytime, I have given one away, it was a hit because everyone is some form of a music lover and everyone can appreciate the vinyl era. Buy this and then buy it again.... for someone else.

Great book, better deal .......2006-01-02

This is really a great book for those who miss the great art we used to get with vinyl albums. Unfortunately, I just purchased this book on vacation, at the Hard Rock Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas for $40! And my book wasn't hardcover! I should have come home and looked for it on Amazon. Now I know that Amazon is the place for great deals.

only Anglo-Saxon.......2005-12-25

This book offers a well-chosen collection of record-covers. Dating from an era when music was for sale on a vinyl-LP, thus offering plenty of surface on its sleeve.

The choice by Michael Ochs and Taschen is almost entirely Anglo-Saxon. Pretty one-sided, I think, for countries like Poland and Japan also have their reputation in record-sleeve design.

With these restrictions '1000 Record Covers' make a fine book, offering us several trends. In the Fifties photographers & designers were almost entirely kept unknown, while later on their names emerge better. The Fifties' designers nearly always pictured the recording artist(s), an obligation clearly vanishing in later decades. And from the Fifties on originality in design considerably increases.

That is not to say Fifties-designs are bad: they just focus differently. For instance, Freddie Bell & the Bell Boys, standing around an ice-cream vendor in a sunny New York street, make a great sleeve. And in 1961 we see a most unusual photo of Roy Orbison without his trademark dark glasses.

Of course the Sixties' British Invasion is highly represented here. Right up to the Beatles' famous 'Sgt Pepper'-sleeve from 1967. However, one of the greatest designs from that period is on the 'Who Sell Out'-sleeve from 1967: the four cartoonlike photos + text, one on each member, just don't have their equal in humor and originality. 'The Who Sell Out'-LP also makes a seldom example of sponsoring, by the way. Odorono-deodorant, Heinz Baked Beans and Medac acne-remover not only appear on its sleeve, they are also subject in three of its songs.

The sleeve-designers showed themselves not shy to lend from more reputed artists. We encounter Andy Warhol's banana, Botticelli's and Michelangelo's Venuses, one of Alberto Vargas' semi-nudes, Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte, Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher, and a design after American painter Edward Hopper. There is even a photo styled on Manet's famous 1863-painting 'dejeuner sur l'herbe' (= breakfast on the grass), prominently featuring a naked lady.

We all know sex sells. So, not surprisingly, another prominent trend in sleeve-design is an increasing display of female nudity.

It is also often difficult to detect a link between the sleeve-design and the music it represents. Many albums shown here have become obsolete but for their sleeve. And the music-style of still popular albums is often hardly reflected in its sleeve-design. A notable exception on this is made by Roxy Music, whose sleeve-designs invariably are in line with their sophisticated, avant-garde music. In this respect also Slade pops up, prominently & unsubtly pushing thumbs forward. Or the Pretty Things, roughly launching a torpedo from navy patrol boat 102 - Ochs and Taschen granting them a double page.

'1000 Record Covers' also produce a touch of humor. Such as a well-clothed man, paddling a limosine through a canal. Or the hotel chambermaid, preparing a heart-shaped, spike-matrassed bed in the honeymoon-suite: Warner Bros 1984, design Steve Gerdes/Dean Motter, photo by Patrick Harbron.

But...but...but...Vaughan Oliver?.......2004-07-26

As soon as I saw this title, I plonked it onto my amazon wish list, as it combines two of my main passions (music and design). But after flipping through a copy, I had to remove it from my list - maybe if rents plummet and I can afford more space for bookshelves it'll make a reappearance, but until then I'll do without it.

The title - "1000 Record Covers" - at least makes no false claims, e.g. "1000 Great Record Covers", or "1000 Essential Record Covers". However, such a claim is made on the back cover, and I must refute it. Too many of the entries are mediocre, and there are too many masterpieces that are ignored. I would blame this less on the author - all the choices come from his collection, which is by its nature limited - and more on the editors, who should have realized the shortcomings of such a scheme. My personal interest would be in covers from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and I can't forgive the absence of (for starters) Joy Division, Cocteau Twins, Gang of Four, the Slits, Buzzcocks, the Fall, Wire, the Pixies, Eno, Magazine, the Cramps, the Residents, the Pop Group, Pere Ubu, Avengers, Angry Samoans, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Romeo Void, Monochrome Set, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, X-Mal Deutschland, Coil, Chrome, Crass, Delta 5 - all of whom released LPs with compelling cover designs.

Labels such as Z, Dischord, les Disques du Crepescule, Two Tone, Rough Trade, Factory, Postcard, TVT, are virtually or completely ignored, and designers such as Malcolm Garrett (his Duran Duran work doesn't count - not at the expense of "A Different Kind of Tension"), Vaughan Oliver, tomato, Peter Saville (Roxy Music's "Flesh + Blood" gets in, but it's one of Saville's weaker efforts and his name is misspelled!), Barney Bubbles, Neville Brody are similarly slighted.

The book could also use an index of designers.

It may seem like I'm harping on about bands from mainly one genre (punk/new wave/whatever), but the truth of the matter is that much of the really innovative cover design in the last 30 years has come from that area.

To be fair, the book does include covers of LPs by the Dead Kennedys, Clash, XTC, Ramones, Echo & the Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes, Public Image, Patti Smith, Altered Images (yay!), so some credit is certainly due.

Also happy to see the a Soft Machine record in there.

And this book did make me recognize what a subtle piece of work TheCure's "...happily ever after" is.

I'm writing this review not to slag the book off, but to inform people with similar expectations to what I had that while there is a lot of good material in here, there are gaping holes as well. Again, I think the weakness lies in limiting the choices to one person's record collection instead of directing the author to choose from the entire gamut of record covers available to him.

So Many Great Album Covers!.......2004-04-29

Just as the title suggests, this book is full of 1,000 record covers. Full color and in all their glory. Page after page of beautiful, quirky, innovative and just about any other adjective you can think of, album covers. Some will bring back memories, some will make you want to search the record stores so that you can own the album again or for the first time. I keep this book handy and find myself thumbing through it all the time. It's also a great conversation starter when it sits on the coffee table.

40 Ipod Techniques review.......2006-11-08

Pros: The book is small in size (approximately 7 1/2" by 7 1/4"), making it easily transportable. Content of author's chapters are concise and well laid out with easily understood explanations and directions. Graphics are excellent, although some a tad bit small. However, in keeping with the size of the book it makes perfectly good sense to have the graphics fit proportionately!

The authors combine the 40 techniques into 9 chapters with a beginning introduction to the iPod and ITunes. Since the latest iTunes is now up to 7.0.2 there are some differences. However, the opening Introduction covers both the Mac and Windows side of installation.

Chapter 1 is Getting Started and covers the basics of the iPod and goes into iTunes. There is opening page to each Chapter which describes what you will find in the chapter. They give good suggestions about the use of your iPod as far as battery usage and what to not use to conserve battery life. This first chapter is 55 pages and covers 10 techniques including Technique 11. Transcoding Audio which becomes a little more technical, but still useful especially when one wants to convert an audio file from one format to another.

Expanding Your Audio Collection which deals with the iTunes Music Store, Podcasts and even free music which is Technique 15. While the iTunes store is great it is nice to know and find that you can download music for free and do so legitimately.

A chapter is devoted to the iPod Nano (not including the latest IPod Nanos recently released from Apple.

There is a Chapter for the IPod Shuffle [p.108 DO THE SHUFFLE. - older models obviously, however there are good suggestions and uses for using your Shuffle as a flash drive.

A chapter is devoted to accessories (Chapter 7). This shows just a small amount of accessories and even then a book unto itself would be needed at this juncture to reflect all of the various add ons and what not which have come about with the introduction of the iPod.

Chapter 8 covers the Maintenance and Troubleshooting, which also includes the Windows information for those folks who haven't or do not own a Mac. I was reading the book at my part time job and an individual stopped and asked me a question about an iPod. I went to the chapter, read him the solution and he walked away, a very grateful individual. I suggested he acquire this book to help him and his friend for future answers.

All in all I would say this is a great little book and I enjoyed reading this and applying the suggestions offered by the authors. Another aspect of the book was the way it included those items for the PC, not that I have any desire to own one, however I thought it was fair to cover both I will probably go and acquire some of the other books which are displayed in the inside back cover.
