Extremely helpful tool in relocating.......2007-02-13
We used this book when we lived in New York and decided we wanted to relocate "somewhere else." It was extremely useful in narrowing the choices to places that had attributes that were most important to us, which in our case were things such as cost of living, weather, education, healthcare. It also offers a ton of info on other factors such as public transportation, the arts, employment, etc.
The book included a "quiz" you can give yourself, the answers to which will help you reveal to yourself which factors are in fact the most relevant to you.
In reading some of the other reviews, I must point out that relocating is not something you base upon a book alone. It was a great reference point, but once we narrowed our choices to several areas, we then did more specific research on those areas via the internet, sending for info from Chambers of Commerce, making phone calls, in-person visits, etc.
We ended up moving south and are extremely happy in our new area. In researching our new region, we found that many other people around here are also "transplants," thereby eliminating the aspect of feeling "foreign" in our new home town.
Definitely an excellent resource I would recommend to anyone considering relocating.
A city may be "great on paper" but beware! .......2004-07-23
These books are full of extremely helpful information, but I warn my fellow readers to take a place's culture into account before making a life-changing move. The books will not help you here. My husband and I bought a previous edition of Places Rated and devoured it while looking for a place to relocate from Los Angeles. We settled on a southern capital that seemed to have everything going for it, including consistently high rankings in Places Rated and every other city ranking we could find. Unfortunately, a city that looks great on paper may not be the place for you. Despite having lived in several states, we were unprepared for the surprising difficulties we experienced as "yankees" living in the south. From petty social and work discrimination to routinely being screwed over by one business after another hired to work on our home or car, etc., it became evident that we were identified as "yankees" on sight and treated accordingly. So much for southern hospitality! I assure you that we did our best to fit in and make friends, as we have successfully done in every other region of the country. After 2-1/2 years of this, we sold our home for a loss and got our "unsweet tea" out of there. Perhaps we were naive, not realizing that the yankee business is still such a potent issue in the south, but we will make future relocation choices with this experience in mind.
The best book of its kind........2003-12-28
It's tough to read a book of someone's opinions on where to live as its really a heartfelt decision each person needs to make for themselves. But most of this book is straight statistics, such as weather and crime. The book is big and leaves enough room for each metro area so you can read the climate graphs without too much eyestrain. It's the best book on deciding where to move that I found. I took tons of notes from this book, and it actually helped me pick an entirely new place to live than the ones I had originally thought of! The only section I didn't like was the arts and culture section. I'm into the artsy scene, but the authors rated cities based on number of symphonies and orchestras and operas - who goes to these anymore??

This book is just great. I have bought every retirement-places-rated type of book that I can get my hands on and this author is by far the best. The millennium edition is twice as big as the last edition and every subject is covered that anyone would want to know about an area; cost of living, transportation, jobs, education, climate, crime, the arts, health care, recreation. I can't wait for the next edition to come out! We're not retiring any time soon so it's helpful to really be able to study and evaluate where we are going to want to retire.

This book deserves an A+! It's a well organized text that clearly explains Geography. Geography can be a difficult subject for the young students, but Scholastic's use of colorful graphics and understandable language make the subject reachable! As a home schooler, books are very important in our house and this book will be well used.

This is a very good book about Lories and Lorikeets, and covers just about everything. In addition to the information, this book is filled with photos that are just beautiful. There is literally a picture on every one of its 156 pages.

Excellent resource for lory information.......2001-03-08
As a breeder of lories, I find myself reffering to Ruggles' book constantly. The species information is easy to locate and she provides good visual diagrams for nestboxes, and some of the more difficult species to identify (Black Caps and Rainbows). The other thing I really enjoyed about her book is that the pictures were largely original and not duplicated like most of the other, smaller lory books. This is not a great work of literature for casual reading. I found her writting style to be repeatitive and the diet information is not applicable to the diets available in the U.S. (the author lives in Australia).
I consider this to be a 'must-have' for anyone interested in lories. I found no serious misinformation that is common with other lory books that I have seen published... and the information, visuals, she provides makes this a very handy guide.

A technical handbook covering captive rearing of Lorikeets........1998-06-17
Author Rosemary Low provides a valuable resource in this handbook of aviculture for this unique parrot group. After a general review of the natural history of the Loriidae, Ms. Low provides a good discussion of most aspects of keeping and raising them.
This text includes a truly remarkable discussion of each family, genus, and species, including the common name(s), a careful description (useful for positive identification), and a history of the first records, descriptions, and availability in aviculture. The most exciting feature however is a careful discussion of behaviour and breeding records for each successfully cultured species.
This is an invaluable resource to anyone keeping, raising, or breeding lorikeets. If you are a lori breeder or fancier, I can not recommend it highly enough. If you just want to learn more about these wonderful birds, it is probably a "4 star book," since the material presented is a little like 'drinking from a fire-hose.'

The book was very well written, with much research. Very useful for for all Nascar cars collectible's fanatics. Much information on each Nascar driver.A good source to keep track of value of current and older cars .Being able to keep track of your own cars with space provided for each car with driver . It also has a lot of history about Nascar Legends , living and decseaed . The only part that disappionted me was,that ther where only NINE drivers listed,with pictures of there cars. Granted these were the Top ones , I was still not 100% happy with the book .To me ,there are way, way more than NINE great NASCAR drivers that sould have been mentioned .

This was a fine guide at the time of purchase in 2000.
It is now 2002 and most of the values are very much out of date. If you are buying or selling be very careful...consult a current edition of Die Cast Digest. Hope CheckerBee Publishing puts out a current edition.
My favorite race car driver.......2001-07-03
This book is great for a Dale Earnhardt fan or a race car fan. The book is mostly about him and his career, but it also features Steve Park, Dale Jr.,Michael Waltrip, the 3rd base coach of the Atlanta Braves Ned Yost, and many other former and active drivers, like Richard Petty or Bill Elliot.There is also a track guide for all the race tracks.It also talks about the crash at Daytona.There is much more. #3 is still the best!

Have a new house and wanted to spruce up the lawn. We were told so many different tips that this book seemed like it would set us straight. Well, the first chunk of the book covers the anatomy of grass. I suppose it's useful to know, but was very detailed. The author even goes into detail on distinguishing grasses from one another, but admits you'd need to sit in your yard with a magnifying glass. We were told to use lime to raise the PH and spur growth. There is NO MENTION of lime in this book at all. My advice: Surf the Web. Bob Vila has a good site and talks about lawncare--including the use of lime.

In Part Three, a purely quantitative approach is adopted to study the demographic character of the formal structures of leadership within the Organization.
History, historiography, heresiography, literature, the narrative, the textual analysis, and the quantitative approach, cannot be less inseparable.

It's an exciting tale into the lives and actions of a tight-knit crew of cops who believe in immediate repercussions for transgressions by criminals. This book raises a few points about some of the short-comings of the judicial system. It also illustrates the dangers of bending the
rules so that the punishment fits the crime.
The ending has a bit of a fairy-tale flavor to it, but this is more than compensated for by the grit, fear, and adrenalin rush throughout the text. We get to see the comraderie between officers and get a feeling for what drives these brothers in arms.
This is a fantastic book - and would probably make an equally superb action flick.
"Take Me To The River".......2005-03-21
Books about cops are usually the same old re-hashed, ponderous stuff. "Renegade Crew" is the exception. It is fast-paced, action-packed and humorous all in one. The author allows the reader to feel empathy for any or none of the river cops in question. Whether you agree with how they went about arresting criminals or not, the story is different from any other cop book that is out there. Giving it even more credibility is the author who is a former police officer. "Renegade Crew" deserves five-stars. I did not want to put it down and I will be re-reading it again tonight. I'd like to read the sequel to see what ever happened to these guys. I wonder if they are swimming with the fish yet? Thank you for the opportunity to express my enjoyment of this book.

Antonio Bustillo has done it again with another fantastic book. Having lived in Miami all my life I was more than familiar with the Miami River Cops scandal and followed it closely. Antonios book was exciting and I had trouble putting it down.
This book is a must have for anyone.

A very realistic, action packed and humor filled book. Through the author's writing style, characters, dialogues and scenes, they made you feel like you were actually witnessing the events unfold or watching a movie.
The book just becomes more realistic, when, after some research, I found out that there was actually a case in the 80s which involved a group of police officers convicted for stealing and selling drugs and murder and that the author was actually a police officer at that time.
This book was an incredible read. The descriptions are vividly realistic, and I just couldn't put this book down. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
