All rough guides that I have encountered are chock full of great information. The Egypt guide in particular is one of the best. The number of maps is fantastic and the quality of the information is comparable to what you usually have to visit the site to obtain.

Saves money big time.......2006-07-06

I went to Egypt in February 2006 with my wife and our two boys (5 and 2.5 years). Although we took a package tour to Hurghada, we actually overnighted there only three nights of the eleven we were in Egypt. The rest we spent moving around (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, busses, train, cruise ship, jeep). For the whole trip we spent around 1000 USD plus the package. We could have easily spent twice as much (or, more precisely -- seen twice as little because the budget was limited) if not the hints in the book.

Thanks to this book we got a great offer for a two night last-minute Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor. By taxi (30 USD, 80 km round trip, an option that without the book would not be even considered) we visited pyramids of Giza and Dahshur. Dahshur (as described in the book) has the second largest pyramid in Egypt as well as the strangest-shaped one (The Bent Pyramid). We were there alone if not the half a dozen French travellers -- it is an experience much different from one you get at Giza where your awe about the greatness of the structures is mixed considerably with the awe about the number of people around.

The bargaining tips and information on ticket prices were so accurate in tiniest details! We started laughing when a typical merchant approached us in Luxor and asked for our help in writing a letter in English to "his friend from abroad" -- our book speciffically mentioned this trick used by shopkeepers to lure unsuspecting tourists!

Enough -- if you are going to Egypt and want to see the real thing, get this book!

Great So Far.......2006-01-26

I arrived in Egypt this week and have been using this guide to help me get aquainted with it. I don't have any other guides to compare it to, but I can say that the organization, writing, maps, extras, and overall quality of the book seem to be excellent. It has been very helpful so far.

The most outstanding features to me so far is the sensible organization of the book, the readablity and humor of the writing, and the excellent maps. However, if you're wanting lots of pictures, you'll need to look elsewhere. It does have some nice pictures at the very beginning, about the first 30 pages, but that's it, you won't find another. After that it's all text, maps, extra's, and special features.

There is a helpful Language section in the back that covers basics of Egyptian Arabic and it has been very helpful to me so far, but it is only the very basics of the language, as I suppose is to be expected from such a book. You'll need another source if you want to try and have any kind of descent communication with most people here, as far as I can tell. It's been my experience that the majority of people here in Egypt speak pretty poor English- quite a bit worse than I expected. But, the Language section will help you with the most basic situations.

I really like the writing style. It rarely gets stiff and boring. It flows well and can be quite funny. It's not "just the facts." There's a little spice thrown in... fitting, for the country it's written about.

As it pertains to a standard textbook.......2006-07-08

I would agree with most of what's already been said, but I'd like to comment on the applicability of these cards to a standard text, Hansen & Quinn's _Greek, an Intensive Course_. Study-cards like these are a valuable time-saver for students taking a strenuous summer intensive course, and I've found them very helpful. However, only about 80% of the vocab introduced in H&Q is covered in these cards--so you may find yourself creating notecards anyway--granted, 80% fewer than you would have otherwise. Definitions vary slightly as well, so your instructor might be a little confused by your word-choices when translating. Some words are only introduced in fine print at the bottom of a card dedicated to another word--for instance the word for foot-soldier, "Hoplite" is introduced at the bottom of the card dedicated to the word for weapons. This makes good sense, since the words are closely related, but it also makes it difficult to target the word you want when working with the H&Q vocab. Also, to clarify some previous comments, not every verb is given with its 6 principal parts--the more "regular" verbs are printed with the first part only, and this includes many of the verbs introduced early on in H&Q, when students are in most need of rehearsing the verb-patterns.

None of this should be taken as criticism of a fine set of study-cards which were not intended as companions for H&Q, but I thought it might be worthwhile to explain how they co-function, since I imagine I'm not the only one putting them to this use.

A Clarification of Mr. McMenomy's comment.......2003-03-02

Mr. McMenomy writes: "Another Greek set, specifically devoted to Biblical vocabulary, is not quite as good -- not because the vocabulary is somehow inferior, but because the set is not as well assembled and as complete."

I often wondered what he meant by the set not being quite as good; I have it now myself, and would like to clarify. The verb cards have only the first principal part, lacking the other five; all the cards lack the lists of similar Greek words (i.e. in the Classical set the card for the verb "to live" will also have the words for "life, course of life"; "life; living, sustenance"; "worth living"); and there are no English cognates and derivatives. The lack of principal parts is a serious problem; the other two are pleasantries which can be done without.

For what it's worth the noun cards do offer the genitive singular endings in addition to the nominative singular.

A good set if you like to have your Greek words printed, instead of sloppily scribbled; but if you're expecting a lot of nice extras you may be disappointed.

The Vis-Ed card set for Classical Greek is one of the better entries in this series of study helps, which has become something of a fixture on college campuses.

The Classical Greek set concentrates on the core vocabulary for the student of Attic Greek (Athens in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C.) in a lexically standard form. A separate set is available for Biblical Greek vocabulary; students of Homeric Greek should refer instead to Owen and Goodspeed's Homeric Vocabularies, which will provide the best return for the effort there. This is only an intermediate step, of course, to the mastery of a vocabulary large enough to cope with Aeschylus or Thucydides, or even most of Plato, but mastering a basic vocabulary makes further reading a good deal easier, and the climb is commensurately less steep.

In the Classical Vis-Ed set, verb cards give all principal parts, nouns offer genitive singular endings, and so on. Definitions appear on the reverse. English cognates and derivatives also improve the memorization process.

The total count of 1000 cards significantly under-represents the set's usefulness: in fact one can acquire a vocabulary of 3,000 words or better, since many cards cluster words that share common roots -- especially families of verbs with prepositional prefixes. Not only does this enable the student to learn more words, but it provides a stable base of comparison, where the varying forms (often confusing in their variety) may be seen and compared at one time.

Definitions of the words are pithy, as befits a flash-card treatment, but not overly so: multiple meanings are offered where it is relevant to do so.

I have recommended these cards and their Latin fellows to my Greek and Latin students for years, and they all find them as useful as I did in my own day. Another Greek set, specifically devoted to Biblical vocabulary, is not quite as good -- not because the vocabulary is somehow inferior, but because the set is not as well assembled and as complete.

This is a really great book. I loved the essays on each plant. Greg Grant is very humorous. This is not just a coffee table book, although the pictures are beautiful. It offers advise and inspiration to those of us who will never have the "Southern Living Landscape" look.

Excellent presentation on traditional Southern plants.......1999-05-24

In these days of trying the "Western grass garden" or the "English perennial border" it's particularly refreshing to study a book devoted to plants that happily grow in the Southern humidity and heat. While the opening chapters on historical gardens in the new world (French, Spanish, etc.) were interesting, the later chapters on plants were the most informative. When reading I could hear my Grandmother using the same commonplace names, like "paw-paw" and how to make jelly from the fruit. The challenge will now be to find some of these plants. (The authors admit some plants are only available from old gardens in the South). It remains one of my favorite garden books for its affectionate commentary on one of the oldest southern pastimes - our gardens and the talking and sharing of plants with loved ones.

Rich and instructive........1998-10-29

"The Southern Heirloom Garden" is a rich and instructive work.

At the start of the book, William C. Welch and Greg Grant tell us that "gardening is one of the oldest, and richest, of our Southern folk arts."

The authors divide the book into two sections. The first section refreshingly explores French, German, Spanish, Native American, and African-American contributions to Southern gardening.

The Spanish, for instance, intensely developed and utilized small garden spaces, while African-Americans used brightly-colored flowers in the front yard as a sign of welcome.

This section also has a commendable essay on historic garden restoration in the South.

The second section addresses the plants "our ancestors used to build and enrich their gardens."

There are nearly 200 full-color photographs here, along with dozens of rare vintage engravings. While some of the pictures are a bit small, they are still informative.

Southern gardeners and historians will particularly enjoy this fine volume.

When Saint Francis of Assisi died in 1226, he left behind an order already struggling to maintain its identity. As the Church called upon Franciscans to be bishops, professors, and inquisitors, their style of life began to change. Some in the order lamented this change and insisted on observing the strict poverty practiced by Francis himself. Others were more open to compromise. Over time, this division evolved into a genuine rift, as those who argued for strict poverty were marginalized within the order.

In this book, David Burr offers the first comprehensive history of the so-called Spiritual Franciscans, a protest movement within the Franciscan order. Burr shows that the movement existed more or less as a loyal opposition in the late thirteenth century, but by 1318 Pope John XXII and leaders of the order had combined to force it beyond the boundaries of legitimacy. At that point the loyal opposition turned into a heretical movement and recalcitrant friars were sent to the stake.

Although much has been written about individual Spiritual Franciscan leaders, there has been no general history of the movement since 1932. Few people are equipped to tackle the voluminous documentary record and digest the sheer mass of research generated by Franciscan scholars in the last century. Burr, one of the world's leading authorities on the Franciscans, has given us a book that will define the field for years to come.

The Unfinished Agenda of Francis and Innocent.......2005-01-30

One could make an argument that the tragic tale of the Spiritual Franciscans of the fourteenth century is the fruit of the unfinished business between Pope Innocent III and Francis of Assisi himself a century earlier. Both men, in their enthusiasm of the moment, apparently never faced the crucible of idealism meeting practicality. Francis eschewed the prevailing wisdom of a constitutional government for his new religious movement in favor of a lifestyle extracted from Gospel quotes and Jesus' own example. Innocent, himself one of the most brilliant and realistic men ever to sit upon the Throne of Peter, surprisingly gave his blessing to this experiment. In their defense, neither man probably knew how big this would all become; though Innocent of all people should have had an inkling of the doctrinal and legal problems that lie ahead.

David Burr describes in scholarly detail the victims of this oversight. This is the tale of the men and women who believed that the Rule and Testament of Francis as approved by Innocent and his immediate successor were a sacred and permanent expression of the will of God, a grace granted to the Church in a time of extreme need, and the first fruits of a new age of renewal in the Holy Spirit. As the author admits, just defining "Spiritual Franciscans" is a historian's challenge. Do you include the friars scandalized by the opulence of Francis's funeral and burial site? Those who opposed later papal tinkering and definitions of the vow of poverty? Those upset with the general drift toward urban living and university life? Those who believed that Bonaventure, Peckham, Celano and others were engaged in revisionist history to justify the Order's lifestyle of, say, 1275?

Burr acknowledges the struggles within the Franciscan Order from virtually its inception. He dates the identifiable crystallization of traditional dissent over the vow of poverty to the life and work of Peter John Olivi. A Franciscan scholar and mystic who produced his major body of work in the last quarter of the thirteenth century, Olivi set out, perhaps unwittingly, to undo Bonaventure. As the latter labored to domesticate Francis and his ideals into the mainstream of Catholic life and doctrine, Olivi took the reverse approach. Francis of Assisi was not just another holy son of the Church; he was in fact the prophet of a new age, an exclusive player in the ongoing work of Christ's redemption. Olivi described this new age of the Church as sanctified by absolute adherence to the evangelical lifestyle, total and unglossed in its imitation of Christ. Olivi provided historical urgency to the matter of Franciscan reform: the Order as envisioned by Francis was the very embodiment of this new age.

Neither the Church nor the leadership of the Order embraced Olivi with particular enthusiasm, but his unmitigated defense of the original Franciscan way was music to the ears of friars who believed they had vowed the Gospel expression of poverty [as then understood by exegetes.] Burr does not elaborate on day to day living conditions of friars in the early fourteenth century, but it appears that friars of the literalist tradition were subject to ridicule, at the very least, by fellow friars in their convents. Burr does note that the distinctive, short, and evidently ragged habits of the spirituals came in for special ridicule-in one case a spiritual friar found his habit being used in the privy for unintended purposes.

Burr analyses the writings of Olivi's successors, Ubertino of Casale and Angelo Clareno, and the efforts of successive popes to come to grips with the spiritualist problem. By the early 1300's the debate over poverty was no longer an intramural affair, unfortunate as that was. Spiritualist friars were having considerable impact upon the laity. As the Inquisition discovered, the lines between spiritualist Franciscans and their lay adherents, on the one hand, and beguins and other spontaneous and unpredictable mystical outcroppings, on the other, were becoming dangerously blurred. In his review of Inquisitorial proceedings, the author discovers a remarkable independence of conscience among the laity accused of associations with heretical Franciscans. Defendants with spunk and courage stood before the Inquisition and refused to recant their respect for friars of strict observance simply on the ecclesiastical assertion that their heroes were heretics. The Reformation, in a sense, had already begun.

One might ask if a division of the friars would have been a better solution than persecution. Clement V attempted something along these lines at the Council of Vienne, at least acknowledging the validity of spiritualist concerns. This was, after all, a matter of conscience. Spirituals of good will genuinely believed that they had vowed before God to observe strict poverty in matters of ownership and lifestyle. The Achilles heel of their belief, however, was the corollary that no pope could mitigate this obligation. The second corollary was that the mainstream Order was living in a state of spiritual disobedience to Francis and, ultimately, to Christ himself. Thus the Franciscan Order itself never subscribed to the Clement compromise, and no pontiff after Clement would, either. Particularly not the mercurial John XXII.

If the spiritualist movement drowned during John XXII's reign, it did nearly take the entire Franciscan boat down with it. John's ruthless assault on the extremes of the spirituals led many in the Church to look more critically at those claiming to be the true Franciscans, the Order itself. If a spirituality of Gospel absolutes was now condemned, just what were mainstream Franciscans living, or more correctly, claiming to live? As Burr observes, secular clergy and Dominicans had seethed for years when Franciscans made their claims to uniqueness while living like everyone else. Their own excesses and arrogance notwithstanding, the spirituals had at least played some role in the development of Franciscan identity and mores in its formative first century.

Clearly David Burr is a great scholar--he has spent his life immersed in the controversies of the Franciscan order after St. Francis' death, and now he gives us his conclusions--rather nice of him, in my opinion, as it saves me a lot of work. The main point seems to be that fights over poverty were secondary to fights over the Pope's right to control. Poverty became the flashpoint issue because Olivi wrote that the Pope did not have the right to countermand the vow of poverty. David Burr points out that Olivi had not really said anything new on this point, but that Olivi did spend rather a lot of time discussing what one should do if the Pope gave you an order that went against the vow--as if he thought the Pope might do it; which he did, given that he expected the virtuous church (Franciscan spirituals) to go up agains the carnal church (Church of Rome) in a great battle that would inaugurate the Third Age. Burr gets the power politics right, and introduces us to the people caught up in its whirlwind, and to the moral choices they had to make. (I might add, to ALL the people, which does get rather tedious at times, but does justice to Ubertino of Casale).

(Note: this review applies equally to all 3 listings of this title in the Amazon catalogue) Be aware that this book is a reprint of the 1974 type specimen book of one particular type supplier (V & M Typographical Inc.). It cannot therefore be satisfactorily used as a comprehensive reference tool by graphic designers as it doesn't include typefaces produced by any other type suppliers. For example, Gill Sans (one of the most important 20th century typefaces) is not included, nor are hundreds of other more exotic faces. The only comprehensive type reference work is Jaspert's [et al.] "Encyclopaedia of Type Faces" of which the latest edition (1990) is listed as being out of print by Amazon, but appears to be available from UK suppliers. Jaspert also includes interesting historical notes.

A beautifully haunting book.......2007-03-14

The images in this book, along with the text, create a very beautiful but sad image of life on the highway, for man and animal. I had never heard of Barry Lopez before learning about this book, but his experiences really struck a cord deep within me. When I am on the road and see a dead animal, I always say a quick few words of respect for it. I plan on reading more of Mr. Lopez's books in the future.

Moving text, fine illustrations.......2000-06-12

Despite having lived with a variety of pets over the years, from tropical fish to canines (a dog and two cats currently), I do not believe I can say I have a great feeling for animals, especially wild ones. I think the one time I really connected emotionally with them -- at least in my mind -- was when an acid trip kept me up all night in the Oregon high desert and, walking down a dusty road at dawn, I noticed small creatures scurry out of my way and felt their stinging reproach: Your species has already overrun the planet, they seemed to say to me; can't you let us have this one quiet time of the day to ourselves?

Robin Eschner, a California artist, has executed woodcut prints to accompany an essay by nature writer Barry Lopez regarding his thoughts and actions in response to ... road killed animals.

If you've never read Lopez's wonderful nature writing, travel essays, or fiction, get moving! This book might not be such a good introduction, despite the author's customary elegant, rich but ever-precise prose. (For a fine and easily digested survey of his work, try the recent collection _About This Life: Journeys on the Threshold of Memory_, and for Lopez full out and leisurely, go for _Arctic Dreams_.)

The subject matter of _Apologia_ is perhaps a bit in-your-face, though Eschner's tasteful and evocative artwork never is. The pictures cast long, stark shadows, but are never creepy, disgusting, or manipulative.

If you have a strong feeling for animals, at least some ambivalence about the domination of the American landscape by the combustion-engine carriage, and the price the former pay for unsought violent encounters with the latter -- or if you know someone who feels that way -- this thin, coffee-table-style volume would be a lovely and appropriate purchase.

And if you ever get the chance to see Lopez speak or read from his work, GO! He is a truly sensitive and moral man, and a magnificent writer.

I can not drive by a dead animal on the side of the road without thinking of Ms. Eschner's woodcuts. Thank you.

Barry Lopez is great. He loves the outdoors so much that he makes us love the outdoors. And the woodcut illustrations makes this a book that stays with you long after you've read it.
