    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-15

This book is informative on a number of different levels. It helps to identify key differences between the Thai culture and western culture, and gives you the information you need to speak with your significant other about on these differences. My fiancee and I wrote and talked for months before reading this book. I could not figure out why she did not have an opinion on many things I thought were important, and kept saying "up to you". The answer to why she said this so often alone was worth the price of the book, but it gave me many more answers, and an understanding of the Thai culture you only start to glimpse if you read the internet. My fiancee also read the book (in both Thai and English), and said it gave her a much better understanding of some of the things I did where she thought I was being rude or pushy. If you have a significant other who is Thai, BOTH of you should READ THIS BOOK! It will save you hours of frustration, and give you an understanding and a basis of discussion you may never arrive at otherwise. The Thai culture is WAY different than Western culture, and their culture deserves understanding at the very least, and respect for many of their customs. They have a way of dealing with people that I personally find refreshing.

On the down side, I thought the Western lifestyle was a bit too generalized, but it did give the basics for understanding so you could talk with your significant other about those differences. It also assumes that your significant other is in the Thai sex industry, which is not the case with me. It does not really discuss how Thai people deal with that industry, nor how a different background might mean different rules apply. However, again, it provides you an excellent foundation for understanding and discussion, which is about all a book can do.

If you are reading this, then I wish you luck on the journey you are about to undertake. With patience and understanding, you will be rewarded with a wonderful, smart, funny and warm companion who would give their life to you. The key is patience and understanding, and this book goes a long way towards starting that process. Read it! Highly recommended, from both the Thai and Western points of view.

5 out of 5 stars The "bible' for Thai-Farang relationships.......2007-05-12

I bought this for a friend of mine. He was having trouble understanding why his Thai girlfriend brought him to her mom's house. Why did she start asking him for money and then turning around and giving it to her mom?
Here, in this book, are the answers. This very well written book is uniquely written so that the left hand page is in English for the guy and the right hand page is in Thai for the girl.
This should be mandatory reading for any Thai-Farang couple.
    Very well done.

4 out of 5 stars Culture Gap - Explains the differences........2007-03-10

    Well written and organized.
Would recommend to anyone that wants to gain better understanding of Thai culture and how it may affect relationships with Thai women.

I can not comment on the imbedded Thai version, since unable to read.

I read this book in 2 days. I recommend this book for any Western man who is dating or courting a Thai woman. I was ignorant to many Thai ways. This book is Heaven-sent as it is easy to read and understand and cleared up a lot of misunderstandings I had previously.

For example: Many guys told me that Thai women lie and to get used to it. I had a negative view of this. But the truth is that Thai culture is non-confrontational and that it saves face of everyone involved. In order to avoid anyone being embarrassed or degraded, Thai people may at times stretch the truth or speak something other than the blatant truth. This is not meant maliciously, but as a Westerner it may be hard to understand, especially if you are from a culture that prides itself from boldness, bluntness and outspokeness.

Because of my German heritage, I was taught to be blunt and not to beat around the bush. I was taught that this was a sign of respect towards others. I learned that in Thai culture this is a sign of DISREPSECT. It is often to save face and to avoid confrontation in Thailand.

Also the issue with the dowry bride price bothered me until I read this book. I felt uncomfortable with the idea of paying for a woman to marry her. But since reading this book, I realized that Thai culture expects men to pay a dowry as a symbol of love, respect, appreciation and gratitude to the wife's parents for raising and caring for her.

Not every family will require a dowry, so each situation is different.

It is also a sign of readiness to support the future wife. In the West we are taught that love is seperate from money, but in other cultures money may represent a symbol of love. This way of thinking is very different from what I was taught in the West, but it did help me to be more open minded to other ways of thinking. It helped me to understand the deep feelings of Thai culture and to realize that it is not necessarily "gold digging" or "greediness" for a woman to ask for money or material things.

I also understood why a woman may feel depressed, sad, or angry if her boyfriend or husband does not give her material things. On the western point of view it may be seen as "buying" love, but the #1 value of Thai people is generosity. They base their self worth on how generous they are. Therefore, it is hard for them to understand if someone does not want to show generosity.

(Of course balance and communication along with compromise is best in any relationship no matter what cultures are involved. Letting your girlfriend/wife and her family know what you can reasonably afford to help with is almost always going to avoid problems. Letting them know that your heart is true and genuine can often make life a lot easier.)

Although each Thai-Western relationship will differ, I will recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand his Thai girlfriend or wife and where she is coming from.

To my delight, the book is written in both Thai and English, so your
wife or girlfriend and her family can also read this to understand
    you better.

Not every single thing in this book will apply to every single relationship, but it does give you something to work from if you are new to this all.

Designed to assist library school students, copy catalogers, and paraprofessionals in learning the principles and practices of modern cataloging, these three volumes provide a variety of exercises on MARC cataloging, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR), authority control, subject headings (LCSH and Sears List of Subject Headings), classification (Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal), and nonbook cataloging (computer files, sound recordings, video recordings, maps, and kits). The series covers both general cataloging information and specific MARC tags; series entries; the use of such tools as Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, LCSH, AACR2r, and Sears List of Subject Headings. It also addresses construction of MARC authority records and bibliographic records, and the detection and correction of cataloging errors. Intended to be used as supplementary materials (rather than as primary textbooks) by students, the books are a great resource for library professionals and paraprofessionals wh

3 out of 5 stars Long on WW2 short on WW1.......2000-05-22

This booklet by Wolfgang Fleischer is a bit misleading as the title leads one to expect more coverage of WW1. Instead it skips over the 1914-18 period and seems to use it more as an introduction to WW2. That is a shame as even though it does not mention many WW1 guns, those it does skip across are interesting weapons. After a couple of pages of fairly vague text on WW1 it goes into WW2 infantry guns in considerably more detail. Once again it is often tempting, but not very fulfilling. However the photographic coverage of WW2 Infantry guns is quite extensive. It should prove helpful to those wanting to model some of the weapons in detail and at the price is therefore a bargain. As a serious work on the subject, it is however lacking in technical data and comparisons. I give this booklet 3 stars for WW2 and would give it half a star for WW1. It is worth adding to your collection and won't break your budget.

Clement Marot (1496-1544), a poet of distinction, is a unique witness to the effect of the Bible on French-speaking courts. He was admired by Francis I, protected by Margaret of Navarre, and by Renee, the French Duchess of Ferrara. His translations of the psalms came to dominate Huguenot worship, inspiring many imitators, not least in English. His commitment to Lutheran theology shines through his personal poetry--once his Scriptural allusions are recognised and interpreted. Clement Marot: A Renaissance Poet Discovers the Gospel is a fundamental expansion and recasting for an English-reading public of Marot Evangelique, Michael Screech's study which brings out the appeal to this court poet of Lutheranism and martyrdom. Chapters also examine aspects of Marot's cult of the Virgin and a possible shift from Lutheranism to Calvinism.

The cliparts are of excellent quality & in pcx format.

                                      Book Description

Harriet Tubman was a former slave who led a heroic struggle for her people in the civil war. An American Joan of Arc, she was more successful than any other person of her time in liberating African-Americans from slavery. Harriet Tubman, the Moses of Her People was originally published in 1886. It is a classic biography of one of America's most important women. The book was based on a collection of essays, Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman, compiled by Sarah Bradford, which was published in 1869. Both books were privately funded by Sarah Bradford. Profits went to Harriet Tubman who, in turn, housed and cared for indigents until her death in 1913.

Harriet Tubman was a runaway slave from Maryland who became known as the "Moses of her people." Over the course of 10 years, and at great personal risk, she led hundreds of slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad, a secret network of safe houses where runaway slaves could stay on their journey north to freedom. She later became a leader in the abolitionist movement, and during the Civil War she was a spy for the federal forces in South Carolina as well as a nurse. 3 out of 5 stars An American Hero- Exaggerated.......2007-01-26

In 1868 after the war Harriet Tubman was induced to dictate her autobiography. In the various editions the story changed, becoming more militant over the years. She also needed the funds from the sale of the book.
Tubman was and is a great American hero. That can not be denied. But with the exception of a few newspaper articles, a few letters and this book, much of what we know about her has been passed from one author to another, each changing or embellishing the story as she or he saw fit.
Unfortunately there are some exaggerations, and or glaring mistakes in this book. Being that she was illiterate it could be that the story was just told wrong. I would hope so.

The Combahee River Raid during the American Civil War is a good example of the problems with her story.
While the raid did take place historians to this day have no documented proof of exactly what her role was and how extensive her involvement in the planning. Unfortunately the reports by the Union commanders are missing. In addition certain parts of the narrative, which are presented as fact, simply didn't happen. The raid never came within five miles by water of the railroad. Only private buildings, farms, plantations, mills were burnt or destroyed. No governmental supply depots were even in the area. Unfortunately this brings into question of what really did happen.
What we do know is she was on the raid, she had a major role in the raid. Most importantly over 750 slaves were freed. Many of these freed slaves eventually did serve in the Union cause.
A good story, but don't take all of the facts for fact before you really do your homework.

4 out of 5 stars The moses of her people.......2005-03-07

The book made me realize that enyone can do anything they wish. I wish it would have gone a little deeper into the life of harriet tubman, however I thought it was still a good book.

5 out of 5 stars God Bless Mrs. Tubman.......2003-02-17

A very informative book. Prior to reading this book, I had assumed Mrs. Tubman took her people to the North, the land of "Freedom". I was wrong, Mrs. Tubman had to take her people all the way to Canada, to be free. In the North, with the passage of the fugitive slave act, Harriett Tubman knew her people would/and could be 'captured' by Northern slave catches, ( who frequently captured free African-Americans as well) and sold them back into slavery) Traveling at night, hiding in the swamps, carring laudnum to keep the crying babies from crying and giving them away, and a pistol for safety, and risking her very life should she be captured.

I regret there was never more recorded history on Harriett Tubman. Her bravery, and heroism are awe inspiring. She risked her life 19 times, to save her people, and bring them to Canada, for Canada was the end of the Undergound Railroad.

Mrs. Tubman serves as a true American Hero, that went far beyond and above, what the vast majority of us would do.

I take my hat off to you, Mrs Tubman. God Bless you.

3 out of 5 stars A Black Woman who left her mark on history........2002-08-04

Harriet Tubman was born to a free man and a slave woman. Her life was hard and she abhorred slavery for her people. She sustained a head injury while helping an escaping slave. Her free Black husband was not supportive of her activities. Learning she was to be sold, Harriet planned an escape, however her brothers made her return. She finally did escape, using the underground railroad. Harriet was a family woman, and could not rest until she helped her sister and brother escape. The Blacks truly considered her their female version of the Biblical Moses.

                                      4 out of 5 stars Great..........2001-02-21

I thought that this book was great. I enjoyed that it was written by someone in Harriet's time, except that some of the terminolgy is confusing. If you read this book, you will learn a lot about Harriet, and her adventures, but remember the dictionary!

                                        Book Description

The way was so toilsome over the rugged mountain passes, that often the men who followed her would give out, and foot-sore, and bleeding, they would drop on the ground, groaning that they could not take another step. They would lie there and die, or if strength came back, they would return on their steps, and seek their old homes again. Then the revolver carried by this bold and daring pioneer, would come out, while pointing it at their heads she would say, "Dead niggers tell no tales; you go on or die!" And by this heroic treatment she compelled them to drag their weary limbs along on their northward journey.

Fantastic, amazing, stirring, engaging, empowering. I could go on... This book is a treasure & I am so glad to have it in our personal library. We bought this for my daughter and I thought it was so good I had to read it aloud to my husband that same night. Kadir Nelson is always spectacular in his illustrations, and he once again rises to the top in this book. The story is very moving, and with a few words it accomplishes the task of taking you inside the emotions and the questions, fears, and faith within Harriet Tubman's heart. I am extremely satisfied with this book & happy to give it to my daughter. I hope she shares it with her children some day.

What I most appreciate about this book is the way it incorporates the role faith played in Harriet's life into the story of her leading daring escapes from slavery to freedom. Most of the history we learn in school attempts to secularize the truth about the people and events that we hold so dear, but this book does a phenomenal job in telling a more accurate, unbiased story of a remarkable woman. Illustrated by Kadir Nelson (who is GIFTED!!!!!), this is a welcome addition to any children's (or adult's, for that matter) library. I know am already collecting a slew of books
