Best Guide You Can Buy.......2007-04-12
I am involved with a Canadian research group that takes high school students to Antarctica for research and study. The Lonely Planet Guide to Antarctica was sent to us by the group to use as a primary source for learning about and preparing for the trip.
My daughter and I both utilized a copy of the book for advanced planning prior to her depature. She took a copy with her and I had a copy with me. I read the majority of the book while she was preparing and continued to consult the book while she traveled. I found it to have an amazing amount of information and I really could not find anything missing from the book that I thought I needed. In addition, my daughter found it incredibly useful as the ship she was aboard traveled from site to site. She could research the next stop at night, and be totally prepared for arrival by morning.
If you are planning to get only one guide book for a trip to Antarctica, I would recommend this book highly. Small enough to take with you in your carry on, yet large enough to be able to answer almost any question you can imagine!
Travel Research for Antarctica.......2007-03-22
This book is a good start in discovering the many and varied ways to explore Antarctica. While the southern continent is not the usual destination for the weak of heart or wallet, Lonely Planet does give a very good presentation on the possibilities of travel to the deep south. While it mostly concentrates on the Penninsular side of Antarctica, it does give sufficient information to plan a trip there, as well as the difficulties and options for travel. Most travellers to the southland will find it to be quite expensive, though for many it is a worthwhile trip to see such a magnificent place that so few have had the opportunity to visit.
Unfortunately it does not always give the most up to date information, particularly for the rest of the continent. It also glosses over the various scientific research projects that go on down there sponsored by the many countries that operate research stations on the continent. While Antarctica is an amazing place, increased tourism will likely lead to damage and pollution to this mostly pristine environment. The upcoming International Polar Year research will undoubtedly renew interest in the Antarctic.

My friend and I are off on an adventure to Antarctica in February and this book offered by Lonely Planet and authored by Jeff Rubin has been very informative and helpful in many aspects. I purchase all my travel books printed by Lonely Planet.

If you're one of the few actually going to Antarctica, this book will give you an excellent background on the White Continent. It's not necessarily the best for planning a trip -- you'll get more up-to-date cruise ship info. online. But Lonely Planet will tell you all about the different possible landing spots, which can help you choose which tour to take. There's also good details about the most common embarkation points for Antarctica cruises. This book was handy when my husband & I planned our trip to the peninsula, which we chronicle in our DVD "T&T's Real Travels in Antarctica" (also available on amazon.com).

This book from Lonely Planet is, as always, the ultimate choice of guidebook for travelers. It provides excellent and up-to-date information which any type of traveler will find invaluable. Despite the fact that Antarctica is probably the least visited of the many regions of the world covered by LP, the authors have managed to put together an outstanding agglomeration of data and advice, well edited and excellently written. But... furthermore, on top of being an excellent travel book, this LP guide is also (like many other LP guides, but even more outstandingly) a great book about Antarctica's reality: the place itself, the peculiar or unique characters of this wonderful land, etc. Truly wonderful material is provided in this book, ensuring excellent reading for the armchair traveler, or the Antarctica beginner alike. Its many chapters and additional text boxes about a variety of topics, contain and provide extremely rich information on matters from history to politics, from geography to biology. All in all, a masterpiece.

Absolutely best and most complete travel guide to The Ice........1998-12-22
If you plan a trip to The Ice, you will find this book invaluable. If you do not, you will find it fascinating, and it will make you want to go. In addition to all manner of practical advice for travelers, it is packed with thorough and interesting history of the continent, its wildlife, its geography, and also contains tempting suggestions for further non-fiction and fiction reading, films and videos, and even CD's. It is written with grace and humor, and contains really useful maps and charts. (How about that map of "Non-Existent Islands"!) Highest recommendation.

Not for younger children.......2007-09-27
Now, keep in mind that I have not read the book and have no idea how good it is for older children. This is specifically for younger children. I bought this book to read aloud to my 5 year old thinking it would be a fun way to introduce her to ancient cultures in our homeschool. Boy, was I surprised when it arrived and it was just a normal sized paperback with no pictures! It is not something that any but the most cerebral 5 year old would sit through. So it will sit on my shelf collecting dust until she is ready for it. Also, considering that it is just a paperback with no pictures it is really not worth the price even for older kids. Maybe grab it from your local library, but don't buy it.
One of the best children's narratives on the market.......2007-08-17
In my mind, S. Wise Bauer has attempted and succeeded: She has made history fun again. The children reading (or listening to) the books will not be writing a dissertation based upon what she has written-- but they will be inclined to pick up another history book, and another... Her writing will get them thinking and talking about history beyond dates.
That's why I like this series. I believe some of the negative reviewers have lost site of the purpose: To engage readers on an elementary level. If readers are following the classical model, they will see more detailed information about the events again (probably twice). This first go round just provides a point of reference for later study.
Examining historical events does not begin and end with one book or source. A true historian will pull together many resources in order to form a composite.
In defense of Bauer's writing, I think that some reviewers are expecting a grammar stage history "holy grail" of some sort. I have yet to find one. Every history book has it's pros and cons. In my mind, this one has more pros than cons.
Bauer does not claim to be the final resource or authority for grammar stage world history. As a matter of fact, she provides extensive lists of additional resources in her other books, like the Well Trained Mind and in the companion workbook. This is the main reason I give this book 4 stars. I wish I could give 4.5. Perhaps an abbreviated version of the resource lists should be included in each volume as an appendix if it is going to stand alone.
Overall, I think it's great for what it aims to do: spark discussion and develop life long learners.
Liked the format and presentation - not the facts.......2007-06-27
I was looking for a history book as I homeschool my daughter. I was very happy with the workbook format and projects as well as history presented in chronological order. As I am not a history scholar, I was enjoying learning the history along with my daughter up until I was reading her chapter on Christianity. Being a Christian who has studied much of the bible, I am familiar with a good amount of these facts. Some of the facts she presents are so wrong that now I question many of the facts she presents from other cultures. If you are looking for an easy read and presentation of different cultures this book is good. I will continue thru the series as I do like certain things about it, however, I am now aware of its weakness and will use other books to supplement the fact presented so the information will be more accurate.
It's OK, but I'm wishing for more.......2007-03-22
My expectations for this book were too high, based on some reviews, although I was worried about comments about inaccuracies. I found it disappointing.
I think what I react against is that this book is just one of many which seem to say the only ancient history that's at all important is what happened in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. There is a chapter on India and a chapter on China, but they are hat-tipping kinds of chapters that don't give the awesome breadth of those amazing cultures. And I was super disappointed with the chapter on the Americas. Mexico, according to this book's geography, is part of Central America. North Americans are all termed nomads, as if they were wandering around aimlessly instead of in the amazing variety of communities that they really lived in - some villages, some awesome cities, and others who didn't settle in permanent villages still had definite territories they exploited.
There is actually more material given on characters of the Bible, which are not labelled as from the Bible but treated as actual historical characters, than there is on the ancient Americas, or ancient China for that matter.
This really doesn't seem to be the story of the world, but the story of western civilization, with a smattering of other cultures thrown in as an afterthought.

Outstanding for the novice........2001-03-08
The late Roger Caras devoted a lifetime to improving the lives of animals and the people who love them. Although he has written numerous books and articles, he will always be remembered as the voice of the Westminster Dog Show.
This is definitely a book for novices in the show ring, and as such it is outstanding. Those more experienced with conformation showing can still delight in Roger's antecdotes.
Great Introduction to Dog Show Competition and Campaigning.......2001-02-05
This book deserves more than five stars.
"This book is about dog shows, how they work, [and] what they mean . . . ." The book especially elaborates on "an incredibly complex relationship [between] . . . two different species of mammals [, people and dogs]."
Many people have enjoyed seeing a major dog show on television, such as the large one held each year in New York City. What lies behind the appearances and performances of all those remarkable dogs? This book provides the answers to all of the obvious questions in an entertaining and accessible way.
Mr. Caras is a very knowledgeable person to write this book. He has been a president of the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and has been a television correspondent about animals for more than two decades. The book is enlivened by many excellent stories about dogs, and contains several impressive black and white photographs of champions in a special insert on white glossy stock.
The book begins with a delightful discussion of how dogs probably became domesticated from wolves and how breeds emerged from this one species. His speculations make sense, and will cause your imagination to wander into interesting new thoughts. The benefits of dogs to people and the reverse are highlighted. The sense of touch between dog and human is demonstably helpful and healthful in both directions.
There are about 20 million purebred dogs in the United States. Less than 10 percent of these purebred dogs will ever see a show ring. Most that do appear will not get past one or two outings, done in by their physical flaws, their dislike of showing, or bad handling. Dogs are judged for conformation to standards in areas like size, color, shape, proportions, coat and face features, and walk. Walk is the key test because flaws that can be hidden while standing still are immediately evident in the gait. As a result, only about 21,000 new champions will be made each year in American Kennel Club records. You will learn the details of what is involved.
The costs of showing can be significant. A purebred puppy can cost from $350 to $10,000. The cost of a year-long campaign can exceed $100,000. The more you do yourself, the less it costs. Breeders of show dogs seldom make a profit. People do this because they love dogs, want to improve them, and enjoy the social contact of the shows.
You will learn all about the different breeds, the way that judging occurs, and how to select the right breed for you. You are strongly warned to avoid pet shops and "puppy mills" for obtaining your dog. The process of how to find and care for a dog is also explained.
Dogs compete both on appearance and in obedience trials. Both types of events are described. You are given information about whether or not you are a good candidate to work with a dog in obedience trials. Having done these, I can attest that they are demanding on the owner-trainer, as well as on the family and dog. Mr. Caras also describes how Junior Showmanship contests can help youngsters get involved.
He is very outspoken and direct in the ethics of dog ownership. He feels that "no pet-quality dog (or cat), purebred or random-bred, should ever be allowed to reproduce" in light of the many animals that have to be destroyed now. He is not only against pet shop puppies, he states that "puppy mills are an evil, ugly concept."
If you are thinking about buying a purebred dog and have little experience, this is a very helpful book for you. Your experience should be much improved as a result.
After enjoying this delightful book, I suggest that you think about other areas where symbiotic relationships between humans and nature occur. The bonsai tree is one of my favorites. These tiny trees would not last for centuries without being nurtured by people. The rewards in beauty, peace, and tranquillity are immeasurably important.

This book contains a lot of useful information. It did provide the information I was seeking to repair a couple of old locomotives.
But, the book is very poorly indexed, it contains many references to Section titles that I don't think exist, and many of the diagrams look like third generation copies, making it hard to see any detail. Having said that, refer back to the first sentence. It was worth the cost to me and probably would be to you as well.

This book was extremely helpful in finding parts for my old trains. The drawings are very accurate but still easy to read. This book makes working on my old trains and getting parts for them very easy.

Pre War Train Restoration.......2003-02-02
This book is a great resource for those individuals who are interested in the repair and restoration of toy trains. I have been able to perform many restorations of pre-war trains and accessories using the advice and diagrams of this book.
The subjects are separated by chapters that deal with the reasons, mechanic's and instructions of equipment operation.
You get a real sense for the hobby as it existed prior to World War II.
The diagrams are remarkably clear with supplimental new text along side of the original operating diagrams. This makes for much easier reading.
Of special interest is the chapter on the assembly of the Lionel 700E kit. This section is a treasure of diagrams, pictures and assembly procedures for this famous Hudson.
