be skeptical........2007-09-16
We spent three weeks in Bali using this book as a guide. For overviews of different parts of the island, we found it very helpful, and we relied on the maps to sort of get our bearings. However, I suspect we could have gotten those things from any travel guide. The Lonely Planet book in specific was recommended to us by our travel agent, and because of the witty and intelligent writing, we thought it would be well-researched and trustworthy.
Not so! We were very disappointed with a lot of places reviewed well by the authors of this book. We stayed in the hotel marked "our pick" in Seminyak and it was much more expensive, we couldn't get hot water, and we got eaten alive by mosquitos. It recommends an "art market" in Ubud that is probably worse for rabid hawkers than Jalan Legian in Kuta. It hugely understates the presence and tenacity of hawkers and touts. The authors seem unaware of Bali Belly, traveler's sickness, Montezuma's Revenge, whatever you want to call it, and there's no advice on avoiding that. It neglects to mention anything that I could find about women being barred from temples during "that time of the month" or where sarongs and sashes are required and how they're supposed to be worn.
I don't think this book works as a stand alone guide. It paints a picture of Bali as the nicest place on earth, full of charming this and breathtaking that. We followed its advice and found a version of the island overrun by tourists, rife with scam artists, with culture and history pushed aside by Bintang t-shirts and anything else that could generate a quick buck. We also found amazing places and wonderful people, but only once when we put down this misleading book and started trusting our instincts.
Great book, well worth the money!.......2007-07-04
We purchased this book before our first trip to Bali. We have visited many memorable places that we would not have found out about if it wasn't for the book. The list of hotels and background information also helped us get situated very quickly. I highly recommend it for people who are traveling there for the first time, or want to rediscover more of this beautiful island.
Good buy but not essential.......2006-11-29
Had the lonely SE asia book but had to buy this one because Bali is not covered in enough detail in the big bible. Found it to be useful and wouldn't want to have gone without it but at the same time I didn't find it absolutely essential. There are so many hotels, restaurants, sightseeing tours, spa places that you can easliy figure out online or when you're there.
Conclusion: found this book good to give me good ideas of where to go/what places are like and the rest - well, you can figure out when you're there ;)
Bali For Everyone.......2006-11-12
I bought this book when I revisited Bali with my wife. I was last there some 15 years ago using a different guide book. I bought and used this book to explore a few off the beaten track places I didn't see the last time. I find the recommendations on food and lodging excellent. The standard Lonely Planet layout makes it easy to find the info you need. This rewritten edition is not just informative but full of its own unique flavour as well.
Not being a trekker, my wife found the info on restaurants and shopping to be very useful too.
Fantastic guide.......2006-07-23
I'm just back from Bali and took three guidebooks. The Lonely Planet guide was far and away the best. It was funny and in the best guidebook tradtion, it did a great job of stearing me away from popular places like Gunung Agung and Besakih Temple - which are two of the worst tourist traps on the island. The author seems to have actually spent time posing as a tourist in these places to uncover all the scams. The rest of the book does a good job of finding all the new places to go for dinner and drinks in hot places like Seminyak. Make this your only Bali guidebook.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful source of information........2000-12-31
I found this book quite informative and useful in its information about many different aspects of visiting Bali. The book provides wonderful cultural insights, historical background and detailed information.
The only major discrepancy we came across, for instance, was that the book said that Kuta has problems with tourists being hassled by street vendors, but when we went in April, we found that the main street in Kuta (where the Matahari Department Store is) quite the opposite. It turned out that the officials had just recently come down on the street vendors and put a stop to harassing tourists there. Instead, when we went to the center of town in Ubud, we were hassled a great deal by taxi/moped drivers to get us to hire them; this caught us off guard.
In response to concerns that the book isn't current on it's information, I feel that you shouldn't rely on a guidebook for prices, and that as a whole Lonely Planet Bali & Lombok gives the information that you need to know. It tells you in great detail about what there is to see and do, and where things are and how things work. I mean afterall, by the time any book reaches publication, isn't a lot of the information out-of-date? Otherwise, a book would never get published; it would be a newsletter.
I gave this a rating of 4 stars only because when we went to Bali, we didn't travel enough of the country (and we didn't get to Lombok) to give the book 5 stars.
Definately worth taking to Bali.......2000-10-13
We have just returned from Bali (October 2000) and strongly recommend taking this LP with you. I have been a bit skeptical about the info of some LP's (Mexico-we hardly used it!) but in Bali whoever put this one together knew their stuff. FORGET THE PRICES MENTIONED, they've at least doubled for meals accomodation etc , but then so has the amount of rupee you'll get!! One interesting note. We took a taxi to the Temple of Gudang Kawi, an 11th century temple. LP justifibly raves about it. The only other tourists there we saw were holding a LP. Local tour operaters didn't seem to think tourists would be interested in it and must take them to more boring temples!(and believe you me, they get boring!)

As a resident of Bali year-round, the number one complaint by almost every lonely planet carrying visitor is how inaccurate and outdated the lonely planet guides are. Whether it is Thailand or Indonesia, information that is needed on a daily basis is history by the time the lonely books reach the traveling consumer. Bookstores throughout Asia are piled high with lonely planets discarded by weary travelers eager to lessen their load. Lonely planet books do offer historical perspectives that can also be found on the internet, but the insider's information the first time traveler needs to save money and sanity their first days in Asia is sorely lacking. Updated info on how to avoid being ripped off from lodging to transportation to moneychanging is of primary concern to almost all visitors to Bali that we meet. Books as heavy as bricks with pretty pics are nice but hardly handy when you are in need of fast, accurate information. Try "The Beginners Guide to Bali" on cd-rom- it has weekly updated info and prepares the first time traveler to Bali for the unexpected.

Good Guide.......2000-06-13
I was so excited about my recent trip to Bali that I used 4 guidebooks. Lonely planet was one of the most useful - it pointed out the tourist traps as well as the great spots. Many of the recommendations are more suitable for backpackers than mid range travelers, but the maps are excellent and the coverage of the entire island is good. Bali will not be the most beautiful place you've visited (it is still a third world country)but it will be the most interesting, especially if you work at understanding the culture. I found the Moon Travel Guide,Bali Handbook, published out of Emeryville California to be the best Bali book. It had the most descriptive narrative (over 300 pages) of Bali's culture, history and customs. However, it is not widely distributed, but is worth searching out.

Diver Dan.......2004-07-13
This book is a color, well-written, no-nonsense look at the many Bali sites by two Bali veterans. Rock is a veteran Indo-Pacific photojournalist who published Bali's first guidebook back in the late 1980s. Hinderks is a professional instructor and divemaster who has worked in Bali and Indonesia for years. A good combination that allows thoughtful insights to each site and the choice of many locales to dive. Bali is covered well from east (places like Sanur, Candi Dasa, Padang Bai, Tulamben) to west (Pemuteran, Menkangen, etc.). Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan, Nusa Penida and the wonderfully laid back Gilis in Lombok are also included.
The superb photography shows the great variety and color of the Bali marine life. This island may be one of the most overlooked dive destinations in the world as it has so many other things to offer. But muck divers love this place for its macro life and rare sea creatures ranging from the big like the odd mola-mola sinfish to the small in wierd fish like the Pegasus sea moth or a pygmy seahorse.
And there's even an ode to the tank carrying ladies of Tulamben.
This is a must have book for anyone venturing into Bali's waters on snorkel or on scuba.

Book Description
This rich history begins with the birchbark canoe, follows the turn-of-the-century canoe craze when builders such as Eve Gerrish, E. M. White, B. N. Morris, and others perfected the art of the wood-and-canvas canoe, then takes us step by step through the construction of an E. M. White-designed 18-footer. Fold-out plans are included. Detailed information is also provided on canoe repair, restoration, and maintenance. Jerry Stelmok builds new E. M. White designs and adaptations at Island Falls Canoe, and Rollin Thurlow builds, repairs, and restores canoes at his Northwoods Canoe Shop.

Helpful guide for the canoe enthusiast that wants to build or repair their own canoe. Wether it be wood or canvas.
Best Canoe Book.......2006-01-23
I purchased this book as a gift - but read it myself before giving it to them. The most informative book with very good illustrations.
It helped me make decisions on the purchase of a wood & canvas canoe. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in canoes.

Excellent. Well illustrated. Very Useful........1999-03-13
I had an old canvas canoe I used for duck hunting that was in desperate need of repair. My hunting buddy and I decided to tackle the job of replacing broken ribs, rotten planking and re-canvasing the old girl. We literally had no idea of what we were getting into, and without the help of this book we would still be lost. It provided us with some great ideas and great step by step instructions.

Book Description
At last, an indispensable guide to the unique needs of the 2.5 million dogs adopted every year in America.
Unbelievably, there has never been a comprehensive training-and-care guide written for the adopted or "pre-owned" dog. Manuals abound for the puppy, even for the needs of the adult or mature dog, but Adoptable Dog promises to be the standard work for this exploding population. John Ross and Barbara McKinney, authors of the best-selling Puppy Preschool, provide a biscuit-to-basket guide for every kind of adoptable dog-the older puppy, the overactive or unhousebroken adult dog, the shelter pooch, or even the mature canine in need of one last, loving home. The authors provide reliable advice on:
determining which dog is right for which home; finding and using reputable breed associations, rescue organizations, and pounds; helping the dog to get along with children and older adults, and other pets; retraining approaches for curing obsessive barking, separation anxiety, housebreaking problems, and fear biting. overcoming the scars of previous abuse.
Adoptable Dog is sure to be an essential book for anyone thinking of adopting an adult dog. 45 b/w illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
helpful, but not a bible.......2005-01-16
I have found this book to be helpful. I'm an experienced dog owner - of some great successes and some not so successful. I thought I knew a great deal; but I learned some new things. I have recently seriously considered adopting a dog, but this book made some of the trade-offs more clear (particularly the risks I would take with small children). It was worth the read just to understand better why a dog mounths.
Good reference on dealing w/behavior issues in rescue dogs.......2003-07-22
This book was recommended to me by some fellow rescue workers. I'm an experienced rescue worker and dog breeder.
I fully recommend this book to those who:
1. Are new to rescue dogs.
2. Need to know some of the typical behaviors a rescue dog may exhibit.
3. Need a refresher course on foundational basics of rehabilitating rescue dogs.
4. Need affirmation about good methods used in modifying negative dog behaviors.
5. Want to rehabilitate any dog that exhibits negative or undesired behavior(s).
To the experienced dog rescue workers like me, this book offers nothing new. It may be obvious to some readers that this author has spent many years in dog training but not indepth actual shelter work. However,I was happy to see that, although the author lacked a lot of personal shelter experience, he had invested and employed a good amount of homework and research worthy of a useful book. Through his writing, I could read the experienced views of shelter workers he'd interviewed prior to writing this book.
This book is written fairly simply. The author wrote very much as if he were standing next to you talking with you. His verbiage is simple and easy to understand. He uses case-in-point examples that are helpful in clarifying his point and method.
Occasionally, the author would title a paragraph where I expected to get much more out of the following text than what was present. On these instances, I felt like I was left hanging and looking for more.
On the whole, I was delighted to find the author's approach to be factual, experienced, compassionate, common sense and fairly comprehensive.
I really enjoyed reading the author's common sense views when he addressed some of the dog world's trendy idealisms. I'm certain that many idealists will disagree with his views because he is common sense yet not abusive. His 'middle-of-the-road views' don't pander to either of the extremes in dog training (harsh discipline versus no discipline). I felt the author's views to be well balanced and obviously experienced.
Overall, this book is a good type of manual for foundational dog training with an emphasis on how that relates to an adopted rescue dog.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. And I hope people who either have adopted or plan to adopt a dog will read this book and keep it on hand for reference. I plan to keep my copy, too.
To someone preparing to adopt, two other books you may enjoy are:
-The Other End Of The Leash
-The Adoption Option: choosing & raising the shelter dog for you
There are Better Choices.......2003-06-13
Adopting a dog is exciting; this book is not. Very very basic in its adoption advice and arrogent in support of its old-school training style, I found nothing compelling here. There are better books that don't have a "one method fits all" "only I know the right way" approach. Nor is it necessary (or mature) to insult others when advocating your own opinion.
Stick with Andrea Arden and Patricia McConnell, and give "So Your Dog's Not Lassie" a try -- it talks about independent or submissive or dominant dogs (several of the personalities you'll find when adopting) and how to cater your training style to your dog.
Excellent resource.......2003-04-18
As a 4 year volunteer dog walker/trainer at my local humane society and also the owner of two adopted dogs, I found this book useful and straightforward. At the shelter we see many people with unrealistic ideas of what to expect from our shelter dogs (this applies to any dog whether it's a shelter dog or from a responsible breeder or from any of the myriad of other sources.) This book explains some of the issues that can come up and gives practical advice on addressing the issues. I also like the fact that the owners give information on training a pet dog, rather than "obedience" training. This book gives solid advice to people who just want to have a good relationship with their new dog. The writers stress the importance of structure and clarity when communicating with your new dog.
As the owner of two adopted dogs, I will tell you that it takes effort and I will also tell you that I wouldn't have it any other way. What you get back from these dogs far outweighs the effort that goes in. If you are thinking of getting a dog, whether it be "adopted" or purchased, please do some homework first and understand the type of dog you are getting and examine your expectations and then decide if you want to go through with the decision which is a long commitment.
All that being said, if you decide you want to share your life with a dog, please VISIT YOUR LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER and check out what they have. You'll be surprised. You will find purebred dogs, adult dogs who have good manners, young adult dogs "who need a little training", puppies and some marvelous mixes of all shapes and sizes. Some of these dogs have "baggage" and "issues" which will need some work, but many of them just got dealt a bad hand and it just didn't work out at their first home. All of these dogs just need a second chance! If you have your heart set on a particular breed which isn't at your shelter, look into breed rescues (cruise the web--you'll find a rescue for just about any breed)who work on re-homeing specific breeds which didn't work out at their first home.
Do some studying and if you decide to get a dog or add an additional dog to your pack, enjoy the journey--it's a very special adventure!! Not always easy, but always worth it!!
Adoptable Dog: My new fav book about my new fav pet.......2003-01-29
I found this book to be exptremely informative, easy to understand, and fun to read. There are a lot of unknowns when it comes to adopting a dog -- especially for us first-time dog owners. This book really tackled the big questions I had as well as had easy-to-follow step-by-step training exercises.
The author is obviously very much in favor of his own training methods, but he at least explains why he thinks they are the best in order for the reader to research and make up their own mind.
I would recommend reading this book to anyone thinking about adopting a dog!

SAVE YOUR MONEY.......2002-07-09
This book is so out of date it isn't even funny. Save your money and buy a real book on German collecting from a reputiable writer. This book is a complete waste of time and money.
The out of date part is right........2002-02-22
Concise is being generous. Skip this book, Whitmans are the ones to buy.
A concise, but now outdated price guide.......2001-04-26
Published by the reknowned Manions' Auction Company, this small book is a concise price guide to german militeria. Included in the price guide is almost everything: books, helmets, medals, badges, uniforms, photos, identification books, posters etc.. Heavily illustrated with small photographs and concisely described, the items number in the thousands. Sadly, however, the prices listed are now almost seven years out of date. It is now rare for example, to find an original Second World War, Iron Cross First Class for only $85.00. A good supplemental reference work and a useful "floor" price reference, this book provides a good representation of items usually offered for sale on the open market. This book however,is by no means comprehensive. It should never be used to completely authenticate an item.
Book Description
Species tulips are becoming more widely available as gardeners wake up to their elegant shapes, vibrant-colored flowers, and suitability for growing in containers, raised beds, and rock gardens. Unlike garden hybrids, species tulips will flower each year without being replaced and will even colonize under the right conditions. Wilford's experience of growing tulips at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, informs his excellent cultivation advice. Comprehensive descriptions of gardenworthy species and lesser-known rarities will appeal to tulip and bulb collectors, rock garden enthusiasts, and keen gardeners, inspiring closer investigation of this increasingly popular plant group.

Collects diverse and individual short pieces.......2003-08-10
Attorney Joe C. Hopkins has served as the editor of the Pasadena Journal and in that capacity, fearlessly voiced his uncompromising (and at times quite controversial) thoughts concerning the infestation of negative image of Black youth in the media and the best means to provide economic empowerment of Black youth today. I Will Not Apologize is a manifesto of Hopkins' articulated opinions and proposed solutions to fight against economic and social dilemmas that plague contemporary African-Americans. From the importance of teaching young black men and women to succeed, to the value of entrepreneurship, government lies, as well as the importance of learning to speak Spanish, and denouncing gangster rap artists as "role models for failure", I Will Not Apologize collects diverse and individual short pieces that, brought together, offer a rigorous path to a better future. I Will Not Apologize is especially recommended reading and a welcome addition to Black Studies supplemental reading lists.
