If you go to Russia to get lost and eat at TGI Friday's, this book is for you.......2005-08-30

Let me preface this by saying that I was born in Moscow and am a native speaker.

First the positives: This is a book on Moscow and St. Petersburg. So it mentions many of the major sights.

Now, the negatives. Basically this is a dismal book. Do not expect any of the maps to be helpful. They are not very detailed, and, amazingly, the metro stations are not marked on them. (If you've been to Moscow you know why this is outrageous.) The map of the Metro, one of the most important pieces of information in the book, is hidden away somewhere, unmarked and unindexed. Once you do find it, you realize it's printed over 2 pages, so much of the downtown stations/transfers are swallowed up by the binding, and are thus unreadable. Don't rely on the maps for accuracy either; a restaurant marked on a street (with the correct address) may actually be on the other side of town. In addition, there are 2 restaurants in St. Petersburg that are listed as near the same Metro station. They are about 2 miles apart. But really, this is understandable -- the names of the actual stations sound somewhat similar. All those crazy Russian names sound alike, don't they?

If you want to do something such as go to a street market, take a boat ride, etc., the book will provide you with the location, price, or working hours, but seldom all three. Maybe this is why the authors of the book are constantly suggesting that you just buy a guided tour. But if I wanted to go on a package tour why did I buy this 350-page self-guided tour book?

If you go to Moscow to check out the newly flourishing culinary scene, you may be surprised to find that one of Fodor's top choices for dining is, you guessed it, TGI Friday's.

And, generally, the organization was poor and the details sketchy. Fortunately, I speak Russian, and could have strangers on the street give me directions. For free.

Not as good as I expected.......2005-08-27

As a frequent traveller who has always depended on Frommers, I purchased for the first time a Fodors guide to Russia (alas, Frommers will not publish one for a few months). I am sorry to say that I find this book to be confusing in finding activities to see in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Keep in mind that I am both a Reading teacher and an English teacher, so that if I had difficulty sorting out where to go and how to find the sight, it must really be weak. Also, some sights were overlooked. In short, wait for the Frommers addition to be published.

One Book for Discovering Russia's Two Greatest Cities.......2005-06-08

As the founder of a company devoted to enriching cultural and business travel to Russia, we are always looking for a good, general guidebook for clients. "Fodor's Moscow and St. Petersburg" has good neighborhood guides to the two main cities of Russia. The entertainment, bar, restaurant and hotel suggestions are comprehensive (as far as quantity and general pricing range, although the pricing and quality levels cited are not always accurate).

One annoyance is that there are no Cyrillic displays of a sight's name (just transliterations into Latin script), which means that you are likely to miss a sign right in front of you for, for instance, the Toy Museum. It is particularly annoying to see the (inaccurate) reference to David Lean filming part of "Dr. Zhivago" in the Hotel Metropole-the closest the cast and crew came to Russia was Finland.

Note, however, that we always tell clients and other visitors to Russia that you should get the most current guidebook, as attractions, hotels, restaurants and transportation options do often change--AND THEN VERIFY THE INFORMATION! All in all, we recommend "Fodor's Moscow and St. Petersburg" as a good additional guidebook to bring if you are staying more than a few days, or if you want to bring just one book for your journey of Discovering Russia's two greatest cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg.

This Fodor's 6th edition is substantially better than the 5th-- chock full of up to date practical info, and the metro maps have both Russian and an English version for pronunciation, which is so helpful to those who are not fluent in Russian. Even the quality of the pages themselves has been upgraded--the pages are white instead of gray. If you want lots of photos, get another guide book, but if you want truly useful info, and the one book you will carry around with you with answers to just about everything--this is it. This book was invaluable to us on our week-long trip to these cities.

A great book for anyone!.......2004-11-29

The Survivor In Us All, by Erna F. Rubinstein, was a great book about the Holocaust. It told the dramatic story through a teenage girl's point of view. She, along with her four sisters, dad, mom, and brother, had to try to stay together and support each other in order to survive and remain hopeful. The book, through great detail, explains what happened in the concentration camps and the hardships the family went through. The family had to suffer through multiple camps and near death experiences, in which only the author survived.
The author explains not only the physical hardships that the victims had to endure but also the mental ones. The author tells about how hard trying to grow up and mature is, while being contained and restricted. Another thing the author realized was, when she found love in one of the camps there was no guarantee that she would ever see that man again. That made her very cautious because she didn't want to have even more sorrow while she was struggling to survive.
The book not only captured your heart through what the people had to endure, but the book takes you to the site of where everything is taking place and makes you feel as if you are there. The book contains great detail and is very descriptive. The great detail in the book encourages the reader to continue reading and makes them wonder what will happen next and who will survive. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted to learn about the Holocaust because it tells the story through a weak awkward teenage girl trying to discover who she is while growing up. This book would get four out of five stars because some parts were boring while most of the book was very vivid and expressive.

The book "The Survivor In Us All" was a heart-filled story written by Erna F. Rubinstein. She was a teenager during the Holocaust. Erna and her family were sent to many different concentration camps. This book helps you understand the reality of the camps. Her writing in the book was very descriptive. At times her writing was so detailed that it felt like you were right there with her. She opens up her heart in the book and her true feelings show through. I recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about true stories of Holocaust survivors. I really enjoyed this book.

I thought the book "The Survivor In Us All", by Erna F. Rubinstein was a very good book. On a scale of one to ten, I would give this book a eight. The reason I would give this book an eight, is because I thought at some points of the book it needed to be told in more detail, so you understood what was being talked about. I particularly liked the fact that this book was told from the viewpoint of a teenage female, because it showed me how I might have acted if the things in the book would have happened to me. I thought that this book was very emotional. Some parts of "The Survivor In Us All" I really felt like I was there, because of the rich writting. This book really changed the way I think about some things. It also helped me understand a little bit more about how horrible the Holocaust really was. I encourage both males and females to read this book. Once again this book is a very good book!

Great Resource on Jack Russell Terriers.......2001-08-23

I enjoyed this book plus the timing of the supplier shipping it out next day air allowed me to know just what our family was getting into the following day when we went out to the breeder's farm to pick out Jillian. What a companion dog! I sat up until 12:30 PM and was able to easily scan the relevant, well written issues any perspective JRT owner should know about. I have owned three other breeds and everything MS. Morningstar shares and teaches in this concise text was on the money. I will, of course, read the later chapeters more thoroughly as Jillie matures and grows from her current 5.3 pounds. I think that this is a great reference text which should be easy to resell back to the supplier or to a used book store if the decision not to purchase a JRT is made. It is an excellent "check out the dog breed" book.

This is a super resource. It has great info on both the host and nectar plants of butterflies, talks to the different needs of hummingbirds and the plants they like, how to set up the garden to be most inviting. There are full chapters on things like "the lure of water", "the shletering garden", garden designs, butterfly & hummingbird behavior, etc. There's a section on hummingbird feeders as well as butterfly feeders (rotting fruit - they love it!) It's a great into to the lives of butterflies and hummingbirds, explaining the cycles they go through and their needs and has really straightforward info/ideas on how to create the habitat that will be right for them. The photographs of the caterpillars, butterflies and hummingbirds (even one feeding young in a nest) are fantastic. It also tells (a little bit) about how caterpillars overwinter. Really one of the best books I've seen on the topic - glad I bought it - its a lot of fun! I highly recommend it for anyone looking to set up a garden to attract these folks or augment an existing garden. Build it and they will definitely come! We've had great succeses!

I received this for Christmas and have read it three times since then, referring to it constantly as I build our new hummingbird/butterfly friendly backyard. Sally Roth has changed the way I garden - her relaxed style, her obvious pleasure in her subject, the wonderful photographs, great descriptions of hummingbirds, butterflies and the plants to sustain them, have made organic gardening accessible and understandable. I have always had a no-spray garden, but always felt some distress when things started getting chewed, as will happen. Now I look eagerly for the first signs of 'munching' on the passiflora I just planted, hoping for some fritillary action. Host plants are now mixed in with the nectar flowers - and I can't wait to see a monarch caterpillar on the milkweed! Thanks, Sally! I have hung up the big giant strawberry feeder with pride!

I borrowed this book from our local library, and I read it from cover to cover! Most gardening books are good for browsing, but are too boring to read. I am an avid gardener and bird/butterfly watcher, and I found this book VERY informative, well illustrated and also well written. I've added this book to my wishlist hoping someone will buy it for me! If you're interested in butterflies or hummingbirds, this is the book for you!

I've read a number of gardening books lately, as I have decided to start gardening. This is one of the best. There are beautiful photographs and illustrations of flowers, butterflies and hummingbirds. The author has an obvious love of the subject. She doesn't make the whole gardening idea into a religion, however. She has a light touch, tells some stories on herself, gives a lot of good advice and makes the whole thing seem like a joy, not a chore.
